    very nice! I remember fixing my router's once, it was not working .After checking the voltage it was 4.4 v fluctuating I thought first it was a problem in the board but I remembered a video that Sorin made explaining that the voltage will be constant if the middle pin was shorted to ground and indeed that was the case. Then I realised the battery must have gone low, so after charging a bit It was working fine and still and that was MONTHS ago !

    Had an iphone that would not charge. Battery was drained too low. Was suggested to warm the back of the phone with hair dryer, then plug charger cable in. Sounded like an internet fallacy, but had nothing to lose, so tried it. It worked! The heat caused the cells voltage to raise just enough to meet the minimum, and that fixed it!

    I unlocked the battery using Project 2007 demo. By making simple projects during charging, discharging, after 10 projects the battery unlocked itself, and the charging started to show difference. Another unlock method is Diablo 2. Den is about the Dell notebook, when you unlock the chest, but that’s for Dell. For Acer, you have to go to Act 3. Asus unlocks at Act 1.

    Hi Sorin,
    This tool seems great, and I would like to get one myself. I do have a question. Let's say I have a HP laptop and it has its original factory battery inside and the laptop is not charging. It is picked up, but not charging. I then replace the battery with a brand new one, and it is still not charging. Have checked the motherboard over and there are no issues with the board. If you keep replacing the battery in this device, does that mean the batteries will keep locking? I have had this exact scenario, and we replaced the battery but the same thing, no charge? Or is it possible we were given another bad battery? Thanks

  • @crawfordpritchard9604

    The cover on the thermal fuse... What is is this part of the design for? Is it to protect the outer black plastic part from the heat build up and melting if the fuse needs to get burnt to protect the battery. I suppose that the thermal risk from the fuse melting other bits of plastic first is how long the fuse takes to pop and current to cease and so in turn bringing the temp back down. Also does the melting point of the replacement solder affect the thermal fuse blow time? Sorry I always have questions lol

    • @fraserc9768
      @fraserc9768 4 місяці тому +1

      The thermally activated fuse may be considered an active fuse in that high current passes through an integrated heater that liquifies a low melting point solder bridge. The molten Solder is contained within the sealed fuse module. When looking at a blown fuse of this type there is often ‘solder spatter’ on the inside of the fuse compartment. Removing the lid of the fuse module whilst the fuse is still operable potentially permits molten spatter release onto surrounding electronics if later activated, which is not desirable. These fuses are more sophisticated than they may appear. The solder bridge uses the correct amount of the correct low melting point solder to guarantee connection separation when the heater wire is activated with high current. Placing a blob of ‘other’ solder across the fuse does restore the connectivity but is inadvisable in a commercial setting as this is tampering with a safety device and Sorin’s repair of the fuse does not guarantee correct operation in the future. In Australia they call this “Bush Engineering” as it gets you out of trouble but is not necessarily a correct repair method. I have no issue with Sorin doing such repairs to get something working but he is either brave or foolish to do this as a commercial repair for customers as he takes on the liability for any future fire caused by his actions (in the UK at least). That liability could range from someone’s laptop being destroyed to a house fire with total loss. I hope he has good public liability insurance ! As a side note, replacing these thermal ‘active’ fuses can be challenging as too much heat on their pins causes them to activate as the solder bridge inside melts !

    • @electricelectronich9979
      @electricelectronich9979 4 місяці тому

      correct points, original solder bridge has a form of thin square. Its specific form serves for two tasks. First, small thickness allow secure isolation of power pass. Second, square form increase its throughput and reduce voltage drop. On the factory it looks special press-form is used to produce such a solder bridge. It is also covered with small layer of resin flux which reduce surface tension of melted solder. In principle such a technique could be reproduced in workshop too. Its not nano technology though )..

      A Google search will reveal a lot of manufacturers information on recommended minimum voltage for a Lithium Ion or Li Poly cell. The general view is that a cell that has dropped to 2V is suffering internal chemical changes that damage it. A cell that has dropped to 1.5V for any significant length of time (a few weeks) can suffer significant internal changes that may lead to an unsafe state. Manufacturers of battery packs will not risk their reputation by allowing a battery pack to operate in an unsafe state, this includes charging after a potentially harmful deep discharge that has changed the cell chemistry. When working with Li-Ion and Li-Poly cells, manufacturers are very aware that these cell technologies are very prone to catastrophic failure if abused and so battery management IC’s became “Smart” and are basically a SoC that monitors the safety of the battery pack at all times. If a safety breach occurs, the management IC renders the battery “safe” by disabling it from charge and further discharge. It should be noted that these Smart IC’s do not arbitrarily disable the battery as that can cause customer complaints ! They do manage the cell safety though and whilst they may disable the battery output at a certain voltage, they also permit charging at a far lower voltage from which the cells may safely recover. At some point though, if the minimum safe voltage threshold is passed (due to long term storage) the Management IC invokes the safety lockout protocol to protect the appliance, user and manufacturers (liability claims). It should be noted that a brand new spare battery may have a special ultra low current mode set at manufacture to minimise self discharge during storage. Once the battery receives a charge, this mode is permanently disabled and the battery will self discharge over time as it powers the management IC as well as natural discharge of the cells. It is not the manufacturers fault if a battery is not cared for whilst in storage. A Li-Ion battery should be stored at approximately 50% charge and refresh charges applied every 3 to 6 months to return the battery to 50% charge. New Old Stock batteries are not something a battery manufacturer cares about and buyers need to be aware of the risks of buying such batteries. I have bought and returned many new old stock batteries that were basically scrap due to crazy low voltage levels on the cells….. think 10 years of storage with no refresh charge and you get the idea ! The cells are basically chemically compromised by that time and pretty much scrap. Use such cells at your own risk as no one can tell you how they will behave if they are revived from say 0.1V to 4.2V. You can get lucky and have a working battery, albeit with much lower capacity than when made, but you can also end up with an overheated cell in the pack, case melting or even fire. I had a new old stock laptop battery arrive that had completely melted its casing whilst new and in a manufacturer sealed box ! One cell had clearly overheated and it was fortunate that others did not go into thermal runaway as a result. Please treat this battery technology with the respect that it deserves. Just talk to Radio Control modellers about what can happen when these cells go rogue…. It isn’t pretty !

      The fuse will still blow up like normal. The solder will pop like a fuse before the battery would. There’s plenty of power that if it was to fail it would blow / pop like original. Solder is tough but not tough enough just let a bunch of current push through to fry everything.

    With all due respect Sorin, 10 Year Subscription costs $1000 + $360 for the machine. $1360 / 10 years is $136 per year. $136 / 3 is $45 (your coupon only deducts $10 out of the $1360, so I'm not even considering that). Unless it is a brand new battery, it's not worth repairing. A 1 year old battery is already old. How many brand new locked batteries Joe the technician is going to get per year? You need to repair at least 10 of such batteries per year constantly for 10 years in order for it to make sense. This is why many think it doesn't make sense. Also the machine comes with 10 Free days of unlocking. In my opinion for $1000 it should come with maybe 5 Free unlocks and not 10 Free days. Then maybe it would make sense for the average Joe. It's worth telling to your viewers that there are actually cheaper alternatives to unseal a chip, erase errors etc. Texas Instruments built their own product which is 200USD.
    Also, this is i2C communication and can be achieved for free using a raspberry pi. There's lots of free python scripts for it that can do what you did in this video. You can go even cheaper than a PI and get a 1 dollar i2c to USB adapter and run the script on your computer.

      I thought the challenge was finding out the unseal code for modern batteries that can use custom firmware and non default passwords. I have used the Texas Instruments utilities but these do not always support the battery management IC’s used in branded laptop batteries. I do not think the designer of the NLBA1 has hidden the fact that it is basically a TI EV2300/2400 interface combined with a battery charger in a single box. It is the software with its extensive unsealing capabilities that is the clever bit of the package. As others have stated, it is now priced for professional users only. I seem to recall that it’s cost of ownership was lower when first released but suddenly increased :( I should have bought one when it was first released. That said, you are still having to pay the subscription. It is a nice convenient piece of kit but from a commercial standpoint it also brings with it the risk of being sued if it is shown that a revived battery caused a destructive fire. Unlocking a locked battery passes the responsibility for fire from the manufacturer to the person who effectively over-rode the battery safety systems and unlocked it. That is a risk that many commercial companies, in the UK at least, would take seriously. To me this is a hobbyists tool that truthfully has no place in a professional workshop except to check battery condition and report such to the customer. Reversing a locked battery status is the point at which the NLBA1 operator takes on the potential fire risk.

    I work for a Repurpose/Recycle business, we repair gifted laptops for charities and reuse them for childrens education etc. Over half the excitement is batteries we have to buy a they are mostly drained and locked out. We would love this device but it's too much money especially down here in Australia. Delivery and overall cost is prohibitive. Why is it so expensive?

      Actually it is cheapest on the market. Check competitors products like UBRT with $1100 yearly license fee

      They'd sell 1000 tomorrow at half that price. It's economics, noone can justify that outlay. I really do understand why they don't, R&D deserves to be paid for.

      Yes, it is too cheap, it is actually the price of a good multimeter :) You can recover the investment using the free 10 days CHip Repair option, you can even earn money in the free period. Quite interesting that people are saying it is expensive while it can recover its price in just one day.

    Well locking battery for no use is a rip off.

    I thought the main purpose for this device was to be able to override the battery lock and charge it without having to manually charge them.
    Over priced in my opinion then.
