Here's a link to the episode of The Back Page podcast I mentioned in the video. Give it a listen! - www.podbean.com/media/share/dir-in7p7-fbbec5a?

i can think of exactly 1 mobile game ive finished in all my years of smartphone ownership. It's called Just Kill Me. It had a great sense of humour and was super easy to pick up and play. I remember playing it as a distraction in a hospital waiting room, i was there alone for hours and i needed something to do to kill time. Circumstance lent extra value to that games place in my life. This game looks like a fun one.

I’ve never heard of Just Kill Me but it looks absolutely bonkers. I’ll have to give that a try!
Circumstances are so important to the emotional impact a game has on us as players, that’s such a good observation. I had a similar experience playing Steamworld Dig on my vita while waiting in a hospital, and the game has stuck with me for the same reason. Thanks for your comment!

There are plenty of great mobile games out there-- it's just becoming more difficult to find the worthy premium experiences. Alba, What the Golf, Behind the Frame, etc., are fantastic games that just also happen to be on mobile.

Agreed! Even though I’ve been keeping an eye on Behind The Frame I didn’t even realise it was on iOS!

@@SevenOutOfTen yep! It's a short experience, but worth it. Also recommend Grindstone.

man I'd *completely* forgotten about Angry Birds as an actual game I played vs the brand/imagery that has stuck around with the films etc. Never been a huge mobile games fan (too scared to play Switch on the tube lol, sometimes do sudoko on my phone) but really enjoyed the sentiment of this video

What a great little video! You brought a unique perspective on mobile games that I'll keep in mind in the future. Good stuff as always man :^D

i would have agreed at some point, but i realised phone games are a distraction for me and i'd rather just sit and think while having a poo.

Lovely analysis, I think there is so much potential for mobile gaming! It's a shame that the idea has gotten bogged down due to the pervasiveness of microtransaction hell. I'd love to see the genre gain a better reputation as there are some kinds of games that are absolutely suited to the medium!

Some of my favorite games are mobile games -- You could do a whole series on the games of Simogo up through their console debut with Sayonara Wild Hearts (which is still rooted in the mobile design ethos and available on mobile). One of their best efforts, SPL-T, is a super simple puzzle game where your only method of input is splitting boxes horizontally or vertically.

I was late to smartphones. I think because of that I've never stuck with a game. Free to play games were the norm, I download a game, play it until the adverts annoy me or i can't progress without paying and then i delete. Like I've been conditioned into seeing games with a price as abnormal. It's wild.
I would also like to point out that you said the word 'balls' 10 times in this video and i feel like you used the word 'projectiles' at one point because you were aware of how many times you were saying balls.

I’m definitely the same, and that conditioning was partly the motivation behind this video, to challenge my own perception of “value” in regards to these games.
Also - lmao. I was so self conscious of saying balls throughout the video.
      Balls.
