Alchemist Brian is my Stepdad
Faccs
Since when did he become alchemist Brian? I thought he was the champion Viktor?
@@tyjohns8731 it’s a mystery😂
@@tyjohns8731 I've heard its a localisation thing
TBH, first time I heard the name Brian ever in the context of this game!
We can only hope the FromSoft devs have had time to check out Lies of P and taken notes. Because some of the Quality of Life decisions this game has are so natural and almost fundamental to the series now.
Fingers crossed!
Fr if I have to go back to watching a full animation for each use of a soul gaining item I will be so annoyed
@@StuffAndAlsoThingsYou haven't had to do that since Dark Souls 2 though?
like spawning the blood stain outside of the fog gate? :)
Mainly bloodstain outside of the fog gate and the refillable final estus flask are the things I will miss the most
My *only* problem with lies of P is the localisation, a lot of translations are inaccurate or are very literal and misleading, but that is not really a problem with the game but the localisation company they reached out to. This led to a fair amount of players being confused about the wish stones, triumvirate amulet, ghost walk amulet and likely a few other things.
Possibly the best example is Recovery Wishstone, it says "Temporarily restores HP" which clearly makes no sense and should say "gradually restores HP over a limited time" and makes it readily apparent that some item effects are not accurate. This kind of thing leads to people going to the wiki to check what they should spend upgrades on or what boss item to get, which carries a large risk for spoilers and even though the game is *extremely* polished makes it *look* unpolished.
Yeah I agree. The worst one for me was the amulet you get from killing Andreus. The wording is really confusing.
Yea agree with this. Actually a lot of item descriptions are confusing or lacking and left me going “so what does it do exactly?”
Some of the P-Organs are difficult to understand.
The Nameless Puppet is such a perfect fight. The atmosphere is 10/10. The difficulty is massive, and the vibe is just unsettling. I’m currently stuck on him on NG+ and I’m not even mad about it.
Yeah I loved the Nameless puppet on ng+ using the twin dragon sword was so much fun! So hard, but awesome!
Romeo the King of Puppets, Laxasia the Complete and Nameless Puppet are some of the best bosses in the entire souls genre. Pure perfection.
Facts!
Fun and difficult took me a bit to get used to romeos moves but overall epic boss fight
Romeo is a one to one reskin of sister friede exept romeo has infinite poise because the couldent think of a better way to make the fight more difficult, it saddens me to see this as top comment 😢 but if you enjoy the bosses then i guess the game has served its purpose and who am i to judge.
@@connorcassidy8069 That's objectively wrong. Friede and Romeo have completely different move sets and lore. Romeo has more poise because he has more openings than friede.
I guess Soldier of Godrick is a reskin of Gael because both wield a sword, right?
@gonzalomontanes8503 well since you clearly havent played ds3. Yes, his move set is almost exactly the same and the fact that the only time you can do damage is when he stops attacking makes it turn based wich is alot less interesting than friede. So its just a copy of friede but slighty worse. Still fun but i cant appreciate a reskined boss
A thing to add about the 4th boss fight is while it does introduce the player to a second phase with an entirely new health bar, it eases the player into it by allowing them to fight the back of what’s familiar (which is the first phase) and if they are up for the challenge, they can learn a new boss fight by fighting the front of the boss. I thought that was handled pretty well honestly and I overlooked it until you analyzed it.
Yeah I agree. I was genuinely shocked when I saw it and it was the moment that cemented the fact that this game was something really special.
That boss is pissing me off 😤 🤬
this video is made with as much care as the game you are reviewing was! clear voice over, sick intro, title screen, fonts, etc. so much attention to detail~ the entire hour zipped by! I'm very happy that despite all the controversies LoP got, the game still got the recognition the developers deserved through sales, selection as GOTY nominee, and recognition from players like you, etc. I wish the developers could see and understand your vid to know how much appreciation and support they have. Many thanks again from a new subscriber to your channel~
Dude this has made my day! Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it! Yeah it was never gonna be nominated. But idc. It’s easily my GOTY. But seriously thank you🙂
the laxasia fight might be my favorite in any game. shes just so god damn cool for one, her intro and phase changes are as good as anything ive seen. Shes deadly as hell and will kill you so quick when you arent familiar with the fight, but when you do learn it, it is as satisfying as anything ive played.
Completely agree. I love the fact that it feels like it’s too much. But you can learn to deal with everything. I’d like to say I think the same with Malenia. But I can’t. Waterfowl Dance is just too much😂
@@SmabbottMalenia is like:
"Ok I have this one move that CAN be dodged, but you have to be no-clip worthy frame perfect on your rolls."
@@kamiwriterleonardo6345 I can’t do a rl1 run with spiked caestus. Been on it for 27 hours😂
Agreed, I just finished the game and my favorite part of Laxasia's fight is how much it forces you to improve, I spent over 4 hours fighting her, and after finally defeating her, Simon took me 4 tries and Nameless Puppet 6 tries, I couldn't believe myself tbh, even more when this was my very first souls-like to actually invest some time into and beat (I tried many in the past but never stuck with them). I'm beyond amazed and happy I bought this game, probably one of the best surprises to come out in gaming in the last decade or so.
she's a great fight with cool mechanics and lore wise is all around great, but imo nameless puppet is the best one. I beat him on ng+ and man he was so much more difficult than on first run, i've learned all the parries in phase 1, i've done it no hit many times and it's just way too satisfying to pass up on. phase 2 on the otherhand i just dodge right lol, those parries are way too difficult. doing him again on ng+ 2 and man he's though but just a fight i can stay on for hours and not get mad at.
If Lords of the Fallen had tighter and more visceral combat like LoP, it could’ve been on the level of souls games, just like Lies of P. What could’ve been. Lies of P is my GOTY by a mile!
Me too!
Not Armored Core 6? 😦
(jk i love lies of p too currently playing through the first time, just beat the Swamp Monster)
@@Bolt2049 I can see AC6 getting it and I’m quite surprised it didn’t get nominated but for me, I honestly couldn’t get into it and it just didn’t grab me like other from games. Maybe it’s cuz I just don’t like futuristic aesthetics or mech games, for that matter. Blasphemy right? Take away my man card 😂
Edit: enjoy the rest of it and try NG+. It might be the best NG+ out of any souls like including fromsoft. U get some really nice p-organ upgrades in both NG+ and NG++
The snow bird fight ruined that game for me. I beat it but put it down right after that.
lotf hands down the better game simply because it has pvp and replayability but the kingdom hearts crown love these disney themed things
That intro cooked hard 🦋💙
Thanks Boss
When Alchemist Brian broke Batman's back and said 'I dedicate this victory to you, Shrek' I truly felt that
Was beautiful to witness
Came here because of your comment on Joseph Andersons video, and him saying he enjoyed the video also. This is really good, and puts to words things I don't have enough knowledge about to say more than "it felt good". Got a new subscriber here
Ah thanks bud I really appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed!
Since when has Joseph Anderson became the voice of judgement in the quality of games?
@@1992zorro ?? I didn't say he was. But generally when you enjoy something one person does and they say something else is good it's not a bad idea to check it out
Great review, as a long time Fromsoft fan, this is the first game that fully felt like another From game. The gameplay was phenomenal, everything felt fair, visually it was stunning and an amazing soundtrack. It even added new touches and things that felt like they were just missing from previous Souls games.
Only major downside for me is how much I love the online aspect of From games, but I still love the PvE and the chance to experiment with different playstyles.
Plus, there's poison swamps and doors that do not open from this side, so it's definitely a Souls game.
Yeah I completely agree. Yeah the multiplayer angle could have been really cool. Like a puppet Colosseum or something. But I’m not a huge fan of the online aspect of From games. But it would have been cool for players. Thank you for your comment!
i actually had the same theory on p not being pinocchio but it was more like he was never given a name because geppeto didnt see him as his son but a vessel/tool to have carlo his son be reborn also i thought it would just be to ironic for geppeto to name him pinocchio, pinocchio is the name we the community gave him
Yeah, literally! It works so well with the themes of the game. And it’s literally a name choice!
I loved Lies of P so much! After playing Lords of the Fallen and having fun with it, LoP really knocked it out of the park. The game felt so polished, the combat is utterly tight and feels amazing and the story was actually very interesting.
Yeah, couldn’t agree more. I played a bit of Lords of the Fallen. But I had to refund it because I really didn’t like it. But yeah, I can’t wait for the dlc.
Subscribed! I've added you to my list of hour-long UA-cam video creators who are definitely worth binge-watching. The video is hbomber, joseph Anderson, mandalor level to me
Thank you ever so much. That’s insanely high praise! Glad you enjoyed!
I was playing this in the background until I heard you say “Alchemist Brian” then I had to triple take my phone to make sure I wasn’t misreading 😭
It’s a localisation thing 😂
Bravo! S-tier review with depth analysis of bosses.
Thank you very much!
I've been digging at this video the past few days and I just finished it. Great video bro.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
I don't think enough people talk about how the durability mechanic of lies of P is almost wholesale lifted from the monster Hunter series which I find to be the only game that has ever implemented weapon durability and made it interesting by having you have to manage weapon sharpness in a fight
Ah fair play. Yeah I’ve never played Monster Hunter. But that is interesting!
Probably don't hear very many people say that because that's an absurd take.
"Almost wholesale lifted" - "almost" is doing an enormous amount of work in that sentence considering theyre barely similar at all. They both involve sharpening a weapon and that's pretty much where the similarity ends.
Your content is meticulously crafted, analytical and has depth. Thank you for this great review and you should be doing this for a living 👏😊
Thank you that’s so nice to say!
Earned a sub and from a gamer that absolutely loves Lies of P I say thank you for giving this game such a great and in-depth review.
Thank you! I really appreciate it.
Outstanding video & analysis!
Thanks Boss!
The thumbnail with Wolf, Pinocchio and the hunter standing side by side is so cool ! Though impossible, it would be sick to see those 3 allied to each other in any way.
If only.
Fantastic video, loved the intro, and I loved this game, that wizard of oz hint at then end got me really excited for the sequel, and I'm curious what dlc will bring :)
Yeah I can’t wait! I wonder what both dlcs mean. I wanna see if they ramp up the difficulty like From do with some fresh structure for boss fights!
The one thing i want to correct is, Twin Dragon Sword is NOT a Katana, it's Korean traditional sword called 'Hwando'. Other than that, pretty much spot-on review.
Thank you. I had no idea. So what’s the difference?
@@Smabbott There's a few differences i can explain here, first the size is the big difference, normally Joseon soldiers mainly used bows for the long range weapons unlike ancient japanese soliders so the blade had to be shorter and wider and lighter than normal katana so it can easily be swapped with bows. Secondly, Hwando were mainly made with carbon steel, while katana were made with tamahagane(sand steel) which is a low quality compared to hwando), also metal fabrication technics in Joseon were superior than ancient japan.
Third, Hwando had this safety-device? lock? to prevent the blade from accidentally getting out from it's scabbard.
That's all i can explain since i'm not a expert but you can check it through wik for further intel.
I was kinda sour for those so called 'critics' for giving Lies of P a low score when it's clearly one of the best game this year has offered me, never liked critics, haha.
Anyway again, great review.
@@KoreanSpy1997 that’s fascinating. Especially the part where they had to change it out for a bow as fast as possible. Yeah I had no idea. And oh god tell me about it. Nah never listen to critics. Thanks so much though.
This is probably my new favorite channel, Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed!
I also love your video about bloodborne! You really summed up how I feel about it too. I’d imagine there was probably a lot of backlash, but don’t let it get to you. Bloodborne fans are a bit too passionate sometimes lol
@@pengininja1891 thanks very much. There was a bit. But passion is always good. Shows you care about something. Idm if they have a point to why they say what they say. If it’s not constructive then I’m like. Cool you do you. Thanks though!
True, and thank you for taking the time to reply!
@@pengininja1891 no problem. My pleasure! Have a great day!
Thank you for this. Everything you said is soooo true and I could have never put it into words.
My pleasure! I’m glad I could help!
I've felt insane trying to talk to people about this game, since I feel like I'm almost playing an entirely different game from what they claim to experience, so this is very refreshing to see. Sometimes, people need to realize that the originals don't always do it best.
I've felt the same way you do about a lot of points here. While I do personally ever, ever so slightly prefer Bloodborne, mostly due to the setting and gothic + lovecraft elements and for getting me into these games in the first place, P is definitely beyond any other Fromsoft game for me, in all respects imo. I love how it uses mechanics I enjoy from games like Monster Hunter (excelling at large monster style fights, sharpness management, items being very useful and influential, and flowing unique movesets), Sekiro (parrying, but without not being able to dodge), Bloodborne (rallying, the darker setting, style, and unique weapons), and Elden Ring (more QoL and refinement in boss design), to make this special amazing game. While I do personally really not like the black rabbit brotherhood fights myself since gank fights just do not work for me at all no matter how good they are (not duo bosses, I think O&S and Demon Prince are some of the best bosses, but gank fights specifically), I also generally agree with most of your takes on the bosses, though swap Laxasia as the best for King of Puppets. KoP's story and lore made me cry after knowing that my victory where I *destroyed* him after 3 hours of attempts felt like I was ruthlessly murdering a friend I didn't remember or something along those lines. I got extremely attached to every character, and all their little stories. I've never felt so emotionally attached to characters since I played Undertale 8 years ago, which is saying a lot. I love that the elemental builds feel strong and viable, where in most From games, even Bloodborne where element is at its best, it falls off due to the scaling that the raw weapons can get with buffs, so having status effects tied to element helps immensely. My favorite build in Elden Ring uses blackflame, and this game basically feels like it emulates that with all its statuses but better.
I'm very excited for the DLC and the sequel. I would love to see these devs make a dragon fight, as those are my favorites since I'm a Monster Hunter fan first and foremost, and got into Bloodborne because it had cool monsters and Dark Souls 3 entirely for Midir who is basically just a MH final boss elder dragon. Maybe in Shoes of D or some other fantasy game in their universe we can get a fucked up dead space ergo dragon or something?
Even though I would have no idea how they would do a dragon fight, yeah I’d love to see it be done too! Thanks for the comment. Dw you’re not alone. I’m often thinking to myself when I see everyone’s reactions and thinking, am I overreacting? But no. I’ve beaten this game four times and it really is just that good. In terms of KOP I cannot argue with that. The lore and the presentation of that boss is incredible! Great pick mate!
Yep, I also feel insane. I enjoyed this game more than elden ring, but the majority of people are saying it’s not on par with fromsoft.
@@slycooper2bandofthieves116 yeah get ready to have a ton of stuff thrown your way with that belief. You’re right. But at this current time, that point will get you in heat 😂
I’d argue it’s still inferior to sekiro but yea I agree. I’d say sekiro>bloodborne>lies of p=ds3>ds1 (only because of the 2nd half)
You not alone, people even to this day, after more than a decade after DS 1's release, haven't accepted Souslike as a proper genre. It's the same as Pokemon or "monster taiming", like bro if you like souls games and the mechanics, why cry when other studios besides Fromsoft try using those in order to make their own original game?
Absolute spot on review. The game delivered so much and then some. As you stated already, the only reason this game got so much unjustified criticism is, because it is not a game from Fromsoft. If it was, all it would have gotten was praise. It still got a lot of praise, but with From in the startup screens, it would have been nominated for GotY and not "just" best Art Direction and best RPG.
One more thing, which noone seems to talk about, Neowiz truly understood the core of soulsgames. Not only that, but Neowiz KNEW they have nailed it down even when they hadn't released the full game. They made that perfecxtly clear when they released the demo. The demo was huge, not only in it's quality but also in it's size. In fact, it was so long, that I thought more than once "Wait, why isn't it ending? Did they screw up and release the full game on accident instead of the demo?" That was pure confidence by the Devs.
I really hope they don't lose that spirit and only improve on that. Can't wait for the DLC and future releases. One thing is absolutely clear in my opinion. While other soulslikes might only have gotten a "meh, whatever" reaction from Fromsoft, I am sure From will pay close attention to what this team will be brewing in the future.
Thank you very much! Yeah they really did! And we can only hope!
Absolutely love this game!! 100% and played it 8 gameplays and still wanna play it!! I can not wait for the dlc and see what LIES ahead
Alchemist Brian was pretty good but imo Susan the complete secretary was the best and hardest fight in the game. Bob the king of puppets was pretty awesome though. Great video. Subbed.👍
All three running a maccies.
Please come back Smabbot. We need you to review Shaq Fu, A Legend Reborn
This comment goes out to the ppl commenting more than to the video: There’s two types of souls players, Souls Vets and People who are good at souls games. If this comment got you heated, that’s a good indication of which category you fall into.
I don't comment on youtube not in my 10 years have I commented, I think but this video is fantastic, Well spoken and a joy to listen to 10/10
Thank you very much! I consider that an honour
Great in-depth analysis!
Black Rabbit Brotherhood are my favourite fights of the game thus far. I wish more gank fight like this existed!
Thank you! Yeah we can only hope they will and improve upon it in the future.
Babe wake up!! New Smabbott video dropped!!!!
I absolutely love this game. I did a new game plus three on one character new game plus two on a technical class character, and I just started one for an advanced build. Needless to say I did get all the trophies already. Few games deserve my dedication like that. Bring on the DLC!
Yeah I can’t wait! When do you think it will be out?
I am predicting possibly March of next year at the earliest. We will at least hear more about it by then. Assuming they take the same approach from software does where they actually make the DLC like a real big expansion.@@Smabbott
@@JJsiN84 March would be awesome. If the rumours of Elden Ring are to be believed that would give us two dlcs back to back!!!
Awesome video, Beautifully written :)
Thank you very much!
awesome vid. wish you got talk about the levels and lore a bit more, loved everything surrounding the fighting mechanics and bosses.
I’m not that well familiar with talking about level design in a more constructive sense. But my two sense on the matter is, they’re all good. And I think only one really comes close to From level design and that’s Larenzini arcade. And I think the lore is really good. They built an interesting mythology for everything with really interesting characters. But again, it feels more like a story than lore. Which again I like. It is a story. It’s like a book. That’s my belief of why the whole game is linear with chapters as you cannot divert from written text. But thank you very much!
Thank you! You perfectly pointed out how much of the good things about this game, it is such an inspiration. Honestly I could put it to word like you, I’m still mind blown with Lies of P, One of my favourite all times games now
Thank you for that! Yeah gotta love P! I hope as time goes on everyone realises how brilliant this game was. It seems to be shifting that way. But we’ll see.
Great video, well done
Thank you very much!
More more more we need more honesty in the souls community thank you for the amazing video sharing every aspect of the awesome Ive grown to love like mad❤ currently Ng+4
Wow! Ng+ 4! Well done bro! And thank you!
41:58 a good way to counter that and deal some pretty significant damage to her is using the "perfect parry" special grindstone, just as phase 2 starts
Yeah I used that in my first play through. Came in very handy.
Mate, yours is the best review I've ever seen. I could feel your passion for the game and how much research you did. Your work is just as awesome as LOP is.
Thanks man that means so much you don’t even know! Glad you enjoyed bud!
Weirdly enough. I was struggling alot with the oarry timings in the game. But when i fought laxasia, it just clicked with me. It was such a weird feeling, because from that point on, i could just perfect parry most attacks and it felt great
i love that u changed viktors name above the healthbar to alchemist brian lmao
It’s a localisation thing😂
From day 1 i knew this game was going to be special. To see it be consitently regarded as on the same level as From and in ways surpassing aspects of them brings me a joy I've felt only a few times in the 20+ years I've been game.
just bought Lies of P, can't wait to play it tomorrow!
Hope you enjoy it boss!
I'm more psyched for news on the LOP DLC than any actual full game in production right now.
You earned my sub. I will get this game.
What I love about the king of puppets is that the whole fight is structured around "this is the final boss vibe" as you are led to believe so by Gepetto. When you finally defeat him you expect the credits to roll only to find wait a minute we just deciphered the messages sent by him. You realize plot twist there is another final villain leading you into the introduction to the 2nd arc of the game the alchemists.
It’s incredible isn’t it! I cannot wait to see what this team does next!
@@Smabbott Do you think P should still be the protagonist or someone else, like the Tin man from Wizard of OZ?
@@fallasleep9472 I’m hoping for Dorothy in something of the realm of Alice Madness Returns if you know what I mean?
In black rabbit pt 2 it's not a gltich. It's just learning another move, it's the same every time. When you fully charge R2 on white bar, step back until her stops.
Yeah but if you riposte him straight after breaking R2 white bar, you will riposte him and then he’ll rip out half way through the animation and kill you. It happened to Zavvi.
Great video my friend! Spot-on! This game blew me away as well and is easily my GOTY! I hope it wins at least one of the two things it was nominated for. Small note though, Neowiz didn't make the game Round 8 did. Neowiz is the publisher.
Yeah. Thanks man. Yeah by the end I was just trying to say both because I was confused. Yeah me too! But unfortunately I don’t think it will win either of the ones it’s up for. But it is also my GOTY
Alchemist Brian? 😂 I’m guessing that’s a localized name for some reason? He was called champion Victor when I played. Still legendary critique of Lies of P
Yeah that’s what it is😂 Thank you very much!
THANK YOU for making this video man! This is exactly what I've been saying too! I adore from soft games but Lies of P really does feel like it took all the right inspiration from those games and did something amazing! A true evolution of the genre which I feel like Elden Ring misunderstood.
Yeah I completely agree! You’re welcome bro! Yeah Elden Ring is still great, but it’s too overtuned I think when it comes to move sets and delayed attacks it went too overboard.
27:52 this transition from phase 1 to 2 is so smooth
Thank you very much! Yeah I love a good match shot! another one of my favourites which is harder to see is puppet devouring swamp monster.
Will you be doing a DLC review like this when it comes out ? i really enjoyed this :)
Thank you! If there’s something to say then I definitely will!
I’m so glad that I played lies of p, every moment of it gave me chills and experience’s I’ll never forget.
Yeah it truly was incredible!
I like that these games use the border tint trick it seems to add to the atmosphere.
Sorry, what’s the border tint trick?
i loved your video. i agree that neowiz did do somethings better than fromsoft and more people need to be having this discussion. the fantastic boss design of lies of p has me in awe too. keep up the good work
Thanks very much! That means a lot! Yeah, I mean it’s just one of those communities. Have to appreciate the passion. But seriously thank you!
I also love the detail of the loading bar, his nose grows lol.
Yeah me too!
Another thing i really liked about the nameless puppet fight is the fact that every time you rest at the stargazer, you have the option to change your mind and give up your heart. And as much as that option was tempting sometimes because of how much i was dying the first time, you I know just how amazing the boss is because despite the temptation to skip it, i never actually wanted to do it. Not out of stubbornness either. I was just in complete awe with how cool and amazing the fight was and i genuinely wanted to see it through. i died a ton but it never felt unfair.
As a Soulsborne veteran, I think Lies of P is one of the greatest games of the genre - and that inludes Fromsoft games.
Completely agree
your words echoes with my thoughts, great video =)
Thanks very much!🙂
Wait you like the second black rabbit brotherhood encounter? Well thats a new one
I like the way in which the AI only aggro’s when that brother has said their line and applied the status effect to their weapon. Makes the encounter feel manageable. Which is ridiculous when you think it’s a three on one. And then the eldest brother rematch is frantic and enjoyable. It’s not one of my favourites. But yeah, I do like it🙂
Gonna be honest It is my least favourite Boss of all time thanks to the brothers being way to fast and small for me to properly learn their moves (except the bucket head and the eldest), the annoying status effects that add nothing to the encounter, the arena being pretty ass and the fact that one of them can just grapple you whenever he wants disrupting the fight, but if you enjoy It good for you :)
@@carlosgonzalezfernandez3806 yeah I’ll agree on the grapple. Annoys the hell out of me. And the back stepping. But apart from that. Yeah it’s okay. Definitely played worse. But NG+ is a different story. Too much health. Way too much health!
The first time I fought the Green Swamp Monster in phase 2 and it just rotated its body I was like „WTF is going on here“ and then it used the claw attack to kill me, and I was just sitting there really chuckling at this animation, I was like „alright, this is really really fucking cool I’m not even mad“.
I also think the records are genuinely the best collectables I‘ve ever seen in a video game. After I heard the first one I decided I must collect them all.
For real! It was a surreal moment. And yeah I was not prepared for how brilliant those records would be.
@@Smabbott I think just the idea of it is simply brilliant. Most of those records are there it commemorate a part of the story and those characters. I think they are especially impactful because how hard the player has to fight for those special moments and the devs made sure that these music feel like they can carry the weight of those moments. Now each time I hear them I remember the characters and the journey in this game. It’s kinda magical.
@@morgenrote4642 yeah I can definitely feel that. Especially when you consider when you get shadowflower or Why. Yeah they’re fantastic.
I think my criticisms of some of the two health boss fights would be they do indeed lose their mystique after a while and some of the first phases can be a bit tricky especially if you're less comfortable with games like this which can make it a bit hard to familiarise yourself the second phases which I could see turning some players off. The swamp monster definitely comes to mind as one such example. I've still enjoyed the boss fights but this would be one of my potential pit falls.
No I completely understand that. The aspect of the two phases can leave a lack of mystery. But that only applies to the first play through. Also depending on your skill level, you can demolish most of the harder phase ones very quickly. Especially with the added nerf of some bosses, such as Andreus, Romeo and Simon. But I do get what you mean.
My biggest issue about the inspiration they took from fromsoft games is that while the game has quite a heavy focus on parries the perfect guard sound doesn't spark joy like sekiro
Everything else they nailed pretty much
I don’t think it’s joy. But it’s definitely heavy and satisfying. Unlike something like the new Lords of the Fallen. Where it’s like pixie dust is being sprinkled everywhere.
This game is just so good
One of my favorites ever
Same!
Professional video Smabbott. Really enjoyed this and have a big soft spot for this game. Is this your own editing because it’s impressive. Enjoyed the craft of your Bloodborne vid as well but don’t envy any creator that dares criticize BB. Didn’t agree with your analysis btw but I respect it.
Thank you! Yes it is. Same with the intro and the font. Thank you for watching it even if you didn’t agree though. Means a lot.
I datamined the game a little and Black Rabbit Brotherhood used to have a boss ergo probably was rethought later in the developement. Also the broken puppet has the lowest boss ID meaning he was probably the first boss created for the game
That’s really interesting! Especially with the nameless puppet being created first. Fits the From philosophy. As when they made Dark Souls they kind of worked backwards. So undead berg was one of the last areas they made. But yeah that’s really cool. I wonder why they got rid of the BRB ergo.
I just beat Lies Of P and Jesus I loved every second. The bosses, weapons, characters, story, and gameplay is what I’ve been craving since beating the 3 Dark Souls games + Demon’s Souls.
I love Fromsoft with a burning passion but God am I happy Neowiz has joined in. I personally don’t care for Elden Ring’s overhaul of the Souls world design/layout so I’ve sitting waiting for a DS4 and God I got it with Lies Of P. For me, it gave me something I didn’t even know I wanted: a story so personal it’ll make you weep. I love traditional souls lore approached story telling but Lies Of P crafted an emotionally driven story so perfectly I couldn’t help but weep several times. And for that it’s become my personal fave souls story.
Basically, it was perfect for me too. 10/10
Yeah the story is great and the lore is good. It’s not as good as From when it comes to lore. But yeah I love the game. Also, I made this contradiction too throughout the vid. The developers were round8 and the publisher was neowiz.
For those who don't know, Lies of P is the sequel to Life of Pi after they got off the boat to continue his journey in becoming P Diddy.
😂😂
Great video. I agree with all the points. Haven’t seen anywhere else that the nameless puppet is Carlo’s corpse, but it’s a good headcanon at least cuz if you give Geppetto the heart it clearly needs to go somewhere and that was probably the Nameless puppet that was sitting right there.
One problem. Is it Alchemist Brian or Champion Victor? Cuz I didn’t multiple playthroughs and saw both at some point. Or maybe this video is making me misremember.
Thank you very much. Nah localisation thing😎
Laxasia is one of the most badass bosses i have ever had the pleasure of fighting(like top 3), such a fun and difficult boss, so well designed.
Isn’t she! She’s incredible!
@@Smabbott That cutscene hits SO HARD for her second phase. instantly fell in love.
@@tommyllama4558 I think everyone did. In more ways than one😂
@@Smabbott Damn rights!
@@Smabbottnot sure if this was pointed out by someone else, but it wasn’t mentioned in your video, and I think it’s important/really great: you can beat Laxasia without attacking her once. Enough P Guards will end phase 1, and you can kill her in phase 2 by P guarding enough projectiles back at her. You can kill her w P guard only. This is a killer Easter egg for what most people feel is the game’s hardest boss
Just finished this game and this is the best video I've seen so far. Glad you're giving this game the kudos it deserves. Love the content and analysis!
Thank you very much!!!
What is your opinion on the nerfs to rising dodge being on as a basic movement set instead of upgradable. Because I personally thought that they should keep rising dodge as upgradable to teach or give incentive to learn Perfect guarding.
Yeah I get what you mean. The main reason was because of the spade puppet being apparently unfair when rising and getting clobbered on the floor. But you can perfect parry it which sends you all the way up. Um idk. I like what they replaced it with. It definitely makes it easier for those who are just joining. But overall, I think it makes the combat more aggressive which can be a double edge sword. As it incentives the player to get in hits rather than parrying. I honestly don’t know. It’s a good question though and I agree. Thanks for the comment.
@@Smabbott (sorry for long comment) interesting take about being agressive. I could see that being the reason. But I noticed souls vets (they are the ones most complaining and I am a new player so kinda odd) are using dodge and not much interact with the parry system and losing the learning incentive seems to be a negative or at least how I learned the Perfect Gaurd. And if they lose inventive early on, how would they learn it after.
And it goes your point if this had the "FromSoft" slapped onto it, people be more willing to change.
Now back to the nerf. I'd be fine with the rising dodge "nerf" if they simple swapped the skill "Linked-dodge" locations, then add the new ability as a existing slot for ng+ (forgot name). Link-dodge kinda feels useless not sure how to use it as I accidently use link-dodge.
Anyway, I thought the parademaster (basic combat interaction) and Scrapped watchmen (parrying mechanic) as tutorial bosses on basic mechanics.
Both give quartz, so if you really need it in chapter 3 when the shovel bot appears you could upgrade for it. And if Linked Dodge is replaced with Rising dodge, it resolvd everything.
Though if they keep like it is, they should restore the health nerfs they did to the 3 bosses to keep the difficulty the same since it is pretty easy (I've sped run it back to chapter 9 due to a side-quest fail that would lead to Belle's death so I reset it to not let her die before nerfs)
Because I think people are forgetting this basically the first release of Dark Souls 1 all over again for Neowiz and Round8. In the sense it makes and breaks the old traditional souls formula, by doing some unexpected and new despite familiar. but reforming it that makes it not a souls-like. But repersents these two studios capability of the Souls genre.
@@Smabbott pardon if this to fast of a reponse: your opinion of rarety of the Quartz. Should they have kept them the same amount or not?
@@Evorexwolf this. Yeah I have to admit now I’ve returned to new game for the first time. The bosses are too easy. Especially andreus. Yeah I agree they should be swapped back. But I was kind of against the nerfs anyway. And yeah, unfortunately because it isn’t From people view it as a copy and paste job. So they will play it like Bloodborne and then complain the dodge is bad. I don’t get the dodge argument. It gives the I-frames needed. I never had a problem with the dodge. I don’t really care if the distance is short. Because I will just be parrying most of the time.
So in that sense you’re right. The incentive to be more aggressive could be a crux on the game. In terms of the added quartz, I think it’s good. They’re a good price especially if I want to do a quick run. If this was my first time going through the game, idk I might feel differently. Me and my mate beat the game before any of the patches. And it was hard but we loved it. Two of our mates are now starting and it does feel like a different experience. So honestly it’s a bit petty, but the change does retroactively change the difficulty for other players. So it will begin the inevitable argument of who had the true experience. But that’s just these kind of games.
@@Smabbott indeed these are games. Lies of P sadly hindered by "Bloodborne copy" and "Souls-like".
but as a first time player into this genre, Lies of P is a good introduction especially people forget how forgiving while fair of this game is. But thanks for the reply. (And for any readers: I am against the boss nerfs, not the boss animation adjustments, that is fine.)

This heavy attack parry with the katana was CLEAN. Be proud.
42:02 NEVERMIND, THIS WAS EVEN CLEANER!!!
Thank you! Gotta love the katana bro!
54:19 Personally I found more wolf the player vibes from Nameless puppet because the red swords and the weight he uses them with feels like mortal draw is always on. I found the cool
That’s a really cool way of looking at it.
(3D artist and Uxer here) - Many good points. I think the UX esp, how you can see if you have enough ergo to level up (by it colour change) to how you can see where the NPC is on the fast travel screen. To many more.
Things I didn't like (outside the parry window is a tiny bit too tight for my taste, but it's just per pref) Is the camera - I died more times I would like to the camera pushing making it invisible to see bosses or larger enemies and the fact that almost all late game bosses have 2 separate phases (like having 2 boss figts in one) can get a bit tedious. Again: not a massive issue, but would like less of that. I also would wish a poise stat as using some of the heavy weapons feels not always worth is as there's a lot of enemies with very tight timing and the parry mechanics almost conflicts with slow/hevy weapons. I usuly play heavy in souls, but here it was less fun.
Small issues considering the game is almost perfect otherwise. I also like that it's linear (i would wish a few optional bosses) as it makes going through the game more managable. (for people having limited time).
Yeah I agree on the poise point. I think the only boss where the camera is straight up ridiculous is Andreus one winged angel side of the boss. You get too close, he disappears. I don’t mind the rest as the game focuses on timing more than anything. So even if you can’t see everything for a few seconds, due to this point, you can defend yourself through sound cues and timing alone. Laxasia phase 1 had me pinned in the corner the whole fight one run. But I still managed it.
That thumbnail is great
Thank you very much!
Great video. We'll done.
Thank you🙂
my GOTY of 2023 !
It's a good argument. Lies of P had all the best fromsoft mechanics and some improvements. I'm not a fan of having no poise at all, specially thru fable art animations. But there are work arounds. I recently finished LotF, and the bosses were kind of a disappointment really. I need my boss fights to make me feel like I accomplished something. Sekiro is still my favorite, I spent 4 days on Demon of Hatred, and I will never forget the whole experience. I'm just now playing LoP, it's very good so far.
Wow! Four days is pretty good, I was two weeks. That boss was so annoying for that game’s mechanics. Yeah I played LOTF for half an hour, hated it and refunded it. The poise I think has ben improved from when the game first launched. Fable arts used to be able to be knocked out at any part of the animation. Now it’s just the start. But yeah, seriously well done!
Bruhhhh the “god let me get that sword” is such a mood😭😭 I fucking want the buster sword
quick minor correction that borders on me being 'that guy', there IS blood in the Nameless Puppet fight. obviously it cant use blood, but since it is Carlo's skin and muscles grafted onto a puppets endoskeleton, blood from Carlo is dripping out of the forehead onto its chest.
Good point! Thanks!
The best way to beat most enemies in this game is to hold L(block) and once you see an attack coming at you quickly release and keep holding block. You will either get a perfect parry or block most attacks. The other thing is you will be able to attack right after while still holding block. It makes it so much better, you technically cancel the block animation when you are standing neutral . Happy gaming friends
Facts
I love this game
Me too
26:22 at least for me it wasn’t the two health bar fights, which I think are fine and they didn’t really over do that aspect too much. But it was the constant two phase regardless even on one health bar. The 2nd phase forces you to learn new move and attack patterns. It just felt kinda overdone (and can feel kinda punishing in the early game before you gain your other kit like the special grinders, legion arms and more access to throwables/consumables) when every boss essentially has two phases like that. (Btw this is coming from someone who loves this game 😊!)
That’s a fair point. But regarding the grinder and access to the P organ. You gain access to these buffs before your first 2nd full bar for a boss battle. But yeah I get ya.
@@Smabbott yea that’s true too! I think for me was just that “2nd phase” all the time thing, got a little like “oh yeah here we go again” lol. I started enjoying the combat a lot more once the options opened up tho.
@@84rinne_moo yeah I get ya. It really is just Brian, the black rabbit brotherhood and corrupted parade master who had one health bar.
My favourite game of 2023, hands down. It exceeded my expectations in every way.
I didn't play the demo. Never heard of this game.
I just saw the cover and thought that it looked good and pre ordered it.
Now I'm about to platinum the game. It's that good.
Isn’t it! Mad!
I loved lies is a very strange mingle of pinochio with I robot and resident evil that really works.
Yeah spot on😂
Wait, he's called Alchemist Brian? He had a different name on my game: "Champion Victor." Idk what's going on there lol...
Fantastic video.
Localisation thing boss.
Clearly this game is very special and it is way above and beyond basically any other game I can think of that has a Souls like description
Good review on this amazing game! Just wanted to give you my thoughts on second health bars which you say you aren't sure why people are upset over.
Personally, I'm fine with the difficulty added by them, however I think they are used too frequently. In Fromsoft games, second health bars are generally saved for the most *important* bosses. In Lies of P, they're used in so many boss fights that you just always *expect* there to be a second health bar after a certain point. In my opinion a second health bar should be a surprise, and when many bosses have one it takes away that feeling of excitement. Even if a boss had one health bar, and the phase change happens in the middle (e.g. Victor) it feels different than a new completely separate bar.
Another issue is how some bosses have movesets that are completely different from the first phase (namely Romeo, and Laxasia). This can lead to frustration as the first phase basically turns into a 1-2 minute runback to the second phase only to die in a few seconds because you don't know any of the moves. I don't mind if it's *somewhat* different, like Manus's fight (which is great imo), but sometimes they took it too far. In the case of Laxasia her phases are basically opposites, and her second phase shares no moves with her first phase. Romeo is also not great, but still not as bad because his second phase still has a somewhat similar tempo to the first (for most attacks).
Anyways, that's that. Thanks for reading!
P.S. you forgot to talk about the best boss: Walker of Illusions. It's clearly the most memorable boss in the game ;)
(jokes aside, my favorite bosses are Scrapped Watchman, Andreus, and Nameless Puppet)
Thanks for this comment. Sorry I didn’t get to it earlier. I get what you’re saying and I agree to a certain extent. But that really only applies to the first play through. I feel there are enough abilities and tactics in order to get through the first phase rather quickly when it comes to phase 1 bosses. As for Laxasia. I think that has a similar rhythm for both phase 1 and 2 compared to that of Romeo. The second phase does have some attacks from phase one. She still does the spin move with her sword before an overhead slam as well as a slam on the floor. But you’re right, it is very different. I think the multitude could be seen as a problem. But overall it doesn’t bother me that much.
Yeah Walker of Illusions was a hard one. Acting more as a proper boss to that of Door Guardian due to the arena having an atmosphere and the sheer ferocity of the fight, she is hard. The use of parry timings in that fight are in the running for some of the hardest in the game. A great fight with a great challenge. Your other picks are amazing picks too btw. I think my top 5 is Lax, Nameless, Romeo, Watchman. Scrapped Watchman.
I do think there's a big issue with multiple health bars on a boss and that it really can just be one big healthbar instead. The advantage of the multiple bars is only really visual as you get the rug pulled under you into thinking you've won when you havent, but doing it multiple times it becomes expected to the point when a boss doesn't have one its kind of a pleasant surprise. There is a big issue though, like in DaS 3 in which, because of limited resources, multiple boss healthbars felt like an artificial way to prolong a fight and make it harder just by the lack of resources you have like healing items (and for people like me it takes away the serotonin you get from thinking you beat a boss). In any case, Sekiro has indicators to show you each phase, except for the final fight where Genichiro shows up but that is so piss easy I don't really count it as well as the die twice mechanic that sort of can stack. Lies of P has a similar method of forgiveness with essentially unlimited healing items if you have a decent enough understanding at parrying and damaging a boss. But honestly, most bosses are only two phased in P because they physically change form and I figure that maybe they want a cut scene to play to show that. idk
Genichro 1?
Guardian ape?
Ds3 and elden ring have lots too
I like the surprise of seeing a boss power up
@@devilvocano420 forgot about guardian ape, but thats mostly, again, done to pull a reveal at you about immortality in the universe. And no, Genichiro at the end of the game.
@@devilvocano420 and again I ask, is it truly a surprise when almost every boss, and I mean like 70-80% do it? Yes Elden ring does but I have the hot take that Elden ring is just okay.
My issue with the two health bars for some bosses, namely Simon, Laxasia, Nameless Puppet, Swamp Monster and Andreus, is that they could have just been one health bar. When two health bars are used in the souls games they are usually when a boss resurrects such as the Abyss Watchers, or when a boss is two different fighters such as Nameless King.
Imo they took the souls formula and straight up innovated it and elevated it
Couldn’t agree more
People call this something to play while waiting for Elden Ring DLC, but I just played through Dark Souls 3 for the first time to kill time until the Lies of P expansion.
Yeah I’m at that point now. Is it bad I’m more excited now for this dlc than Elden Ring😂
Ma man spitting the good facts. This game is final fantasy 1. Wait until they have a bigger budget and more time to tell their vision. The director is so passionate, the company listens to feedback and is constantly wanting to make the game better for players. I really believe this is the start of something epic.
P.S The boss fights were fucking cruel on launch 😂
@@MindOrgansMusic yes they were😂
