@@tylerrowe6131 yeah, but the kiln is still there and the lord vessel can still open it, so you refusing to link the flame doesn't stop other undead from linking the first flame
Actually, it‘s not just Havel‘s armor that says it‘s worn by Havel‘s men. Most importantly, his RING also says that. And the ring is the only item we actually get from „Havel“ locked in the tower. All of the other stuff (e.g. the tooth) are actually locked away in Anor Londo, indicating that the tooth tower-Havel is using isn‘t the real one. Tower-Havel being one of Havel‘s men instead of Havel himself makes more sense to me.
Havel is the dead body in ash Lake, the one that carry the great magic barrier. What killed this great Warrior?!! The basilisks that cornered him and he had no chance to get out. Because his gear was in AL and he was on a secret mission against the gods. (complicated lore, but is well known)
My personal head cannon about Oscar is not that he couldn't defeat the asylum demon, but rather he chose to live in constant danger to try and help as many undead out of the asylum as possible. He knows an undead must link the flame and is sacrificing his journey, to enable all other's journeys.
While a cool theory, he words it like he's upset that he couldn't fulfill the family saying or however he worded it lol, since its so early on, maybe go see him
- I don't understand why Ricard is ranked lower than Oscar. Doesn't the fact that he's in Sen's Fortress mean he rung the bells of awakening? Ricard is familiar with special sword techniques, as indicated by the unique heavy attack on his weapon. he's no pushover. Just look at the weapon art associated with his weapon in Dark Souls 3, it is SPECIFICALLY named after him, not just the weapon, but the technique itself. This isn't just a spoon fed prince, this is a SWORDSMAN. - From Weapon Description in DS3: "Although many of the tales surrounding the prince are questionable, this thrusting weapon suggests that the stories of his graceful technique were in fact true." - There's zero evidence of anyone accompanying him and helping him progress to this point. - Just because his journey is ill-conceived doesn't mean he isn't a legitimate warrior. What other choice does he have? He's marked by the undead curse.
I kinda like to think his appearance in ds3 is his redemption into swordsmanship, just like with haval, and orinstein going to make amends with the dragons and gwyns first born it’s richards redemption at becoming a true swordsman and he even dropped the armor to not fake being an elite status warrior like he was faking in the past.
@wyattonthespectrum5853 I disagree. Ricards' rapier in DS1 has a unique heavy attack. He was already a trained swordsman using special sword techniques. I appreciate your insight, though. Good point with the DS3 flavor text. Personally I think including DS3 info is weird (Andre should be lower imo) though - there isn‘t just a lot of time between the games, but also multiple cycles of regrowth and ruin. Assuming any information about individuals is correct is a bit of a reach - there might be other people of the same name for all we know. At the same time I think it’s worth noting that even if we take it as gospel, the ranking is still off just a couple of spots. DS lore is famously sparse, so a video like this is heavy in interpretation by necessity. Arguing about any specific sequence is moot, the focus should be on the arguments for characters, not their final placement (which you do tbc, I think arguing about Ricards feats makes sense, I just don’t think it makes sense to then go an compare him directly to Oscar)
@Gabriel64468 I'm comparing him to Oscar because they're both Astoran knights whose origins are a bit vague. That's pretty much the only reason. I included the DS3 flavor text because it very specifically expounds on the character. Flavor text is one of the only "true" sources of information we have. I don't think it's unreasonable to use a sequels information as canonical, especially considering that we're talking about Fromsfotware here. Nothing is included on accident. Not sure what you mean about me not making an argument for the character itself. That's exactly what I'm doing. You make some fair points, though. I guess when I made the original comment I felt some type of way because I always considered Ricard to be one of the more "fearsome" NPC's (from a lore perspective).
I assumed the 'shitpost' remark was in regards to the video itself. Because, the original video doesn't parse out the term 'power'. Even though he claims 'depth' to his so-called analysis. Then...even in the opening moments of his commentary he completely dismissed several characters. This should be an immediate red flag. His presentation should CERTAINLY be able to accommodate a placement, if his evaluative process were actually something substantive. Spoiler alert: it isn't. He spent so much time on it, too....😢 This lacks any sort of evaluative authority, as it completely eschews at worst, or simply omits at best, explaining its own evaluative methodology.🫠

For that alone, you are an amazing person and I hope you continue on with this great career path you have chosen. Thank you for all you do to provide us hours of factual entertainment.
1:23:16 kind off untrue, it is theorized that iron tarkus was grabbed and thrown by the iron golem all the way from top of Sen's fortress to anor londo, that's why we see that broken glass there and tarkua's body/leftovers in the corner of the room. If he had to fall, he would've been in somewhere middle of the room. However instead if makes more sense if he was grabbed and thrown all the way to anor londo through that window, that's why it's broken.
Fantastic video! Great writing, pacing, and editing! One bit of feedback, your voice in some of the segments is calm, relaxed, and easy to listen to. In other segments (in my opinion) it’s forced, ‘youtubery’, and harder to listen to. The transition from #7 to #6 shows that well. I think for longer videos like this it’s tiring to have too energetic of a voice (especially if somewhat forced) for too long. Great stuff all around, you’re gonna do great things!
I forget which item it is that you trade with the crow, I think it's the xanthous crown but it gives you the ring of favor and protection, linking xanthous king Jeremiah to fia. He might be related to two god like figures but not sure if that changes things for him
I feel like lore wise the Fair Maiden can probably still cast pyromancies/flame sorceries and just chooses not to, but I could be wrong. Also, for Beatrice, there were other early sorceries. The chaos witches used flame sorceries rather than pyromancy (only became pyromancy with Salaman/Quelana), and its hinted Seath had his own long before the Dragon School was established as well.
during the siegmeyer bit i don't think he was captured by silver knights, i always thought the implication was that he climbed in through the window, tried to progress forward, got sent packing by the 3 knights (ah, were you repelled by the silver knights?) and then just decided to wait instead of finding another way around
I feel like Iron Tarkus accomplished a lot more than falling off the rafters in Anor Londo. I feel it’s more likely he entered the painted world and might have fought Pricilla. Find it more likely cause you can see the presence of another Berenike knight in the painting, which would fit his character significantly better especially when you consider Pricilla’s strength lore wise. Iron Tarkus was definitely no slouch and lore wise we can assume the iron golem was significantly more of a challenge than knives throwing acrobats. His body is also more to the side of the rafters and unless he survived the fall and crawled to the corner and died, I see it as unlikely that’s how he died. If that was somehow the case dude definitely should be getting more points for that, and if he fought Pricilla and escaped he should be way up the list.
Nice video, but I cant let this slander about my dear Ricard stand. "Incapable prince", are you listening to yourself? First of all, his weopon in Ds3 says that "his exploits" were known in a monomyth. In adition, Ds3 specifies that there were many tales around him. Ds3 also calls his rapiers technique a "stunning chain attack", and his fighting style in general as gracefull. This implies that he was well known fro his fighting prowess even before becoming undead. So much so that there were countless tales and even legends arund him. A living figure. The biggest point against what you claimed him to be is actually conected to that. I quote from the rapier in Ds1: "He was born into royalty BUT wanderd the lands in an ill-conceived journey. WHEN HE BECAME UNDEAD he dissapeared up north." From this we learn that he was already wandering the lands before he turned undead, and that he was doing this despite his royal blood, which likely made that unecessary. If this was bechause he loved adventure, bechause he sought the frill of battle, or a different reason remains unknown, yet it seems a fact that he was not only capable enough to live a likely nomadic lifestyle, but also skilled and heroic enough to make a name for himself. These acts of him later being retold in legends and tales. He then turned undead later and just vanished up north. Likely bechause he wanted to make good on the prophecy. The fact that he fell in Sens fortress is not even running counter to this, as that place is described to have never been penetrated by anyone. The crestfallen warrior says that "for a centuary they´ve tried and failed." By that meaning the heros of old who could never in even over a houndred years penetrate the forttress. With us, Logan and Iron tarkus being the only ones to ever make it to Anor Londo. The Iron Golem is even described as a "slayer of countless heros". And might I add, even with this massive of a threat infront of him, Richard is still found almost at the end of the level. Suggesting that he made it throw almost the entirety of the fortress before likely failing at the Iron Golem like so many others. Eventually giving up and turning hollow. One last thing, tho it is likely minor, Richards rapier is the thrusting sword with the highest dex reqiurement in the game. Not exactly something that you woud entrust to a bumbeling idiot of a prince I belive. In conclusion, Richard was likely a great hero who like many others was just barely to weak to make it throw sens forttress. So putting him this low on the list, beliteling his achiefment like this, is incredibly unfair and frankly just wrong. Had to be said.
I think the point of this video is to look at the lore from the game in question(ds1) to tell who is the strongest npc. You wouldn’t know ds3’s lore playing ds1 for the first time and it’s just as easily the case that fromsoft retconned/added more lore to him due to him being a fan favorite npc, or just to have another reference to ds1 because ds3 really builds its entire world around ds1. Either way Ricard was a subpar warrior who was bested the second he was tested by the fortress. Even the onion knight was able to beat sens fortress by himself, the only thing he couldn’t do was figure out how to open the door. And that is an npc who needs to be saved at every point of his journey to survive and despite that he was still able to succeed where ricard failed
Im saving this video for later. I do like Elden Ring but after the DLC drops im going to need content that isn't just ER DLC as it will be for months probably.
Wow Siegmeyer is low. I didn‘t expect him to be especially high, he does need help, but we only help him at a couple of points and that‘s enough to get him through most of the game. Yes he gets stuck in Anor Londo, but he actually got into Anor Londo and then got out after we helped him with Silver Knights once.
“Sort of(?)” and “no you didn’t”, respectively. The Gwynevere you meet in DS1 is just an illusion that instantly ‘dies’ if hit with a wooden arrow (Disclaimer: any potential innuendo regarding the previous is probably entirely coincidental and merely a figment of your imagination). And even trying to ‘powerscale’ the real Gwynevere would pretty much boil down to “Well she a ‘goddess’ and all, which do sound pretty dope, but she doesn’t really do anything through the entire series, so... /shrug...?” Which is kind of a lame answer, so I can see not including her.
In number 28! I don’t think the ds2 greatwood giants are the same sort of giants as the ones in Lordran/Lothric. The storm ruler in DS3 speaks of another race of giants in the Far East refereed to as Oni. Also Yhorm the giant I don’t think is a giant (race), more so just a really big human, after all, to link the fire one must feed it souls, undead act as a walking bag of holding for souls, it would mean for Yhorm to be a lord of cinder he had to be an undead, and only humans can be undead because of the darksign & the dark soul
The undead curse spreads to other creatures, the undead dragons in Valley of Drakes and Painted World - you could argue Gwyn is afflicted with it since in his bossfight he is clearly hollow and to go hollow you have to be undead. Giant souls are also more powerful than human souls (In DS2 random Giant Souls are way stronger than random human souls) so even if Yhorm wasn’t undead he may still have a powerful enough soul to link the flame.
I don't know about mr rank 0 there. I accidentally one shot patches with carian sovereignty in NG+4 the other day. Thought it would just instantly make him surrender.
Something I always loved about Havel's lore is how it emphasizes how strong the player is. We casually encounter him on a stairwell and kill the shit out of him (after a few tries and holes in the wall). It's only later that we find out he's one of the most powerful entities in the whole Dark Souls canon. And we just kill him like it's nothing. No wonder almost everything aggros on the player. We're walking death.
Just for your information, Ciaran is pronounced "keer-in". It's Irish Gaelic for "little dark one". I don't recall if it's pronounced properly in the game or not because it's been a minute since I've played, but in case you encounter the name in the real world, I'm sure they'll appreciate the correct pronunciation

A lot of time, research, writing and recording went into this video. I'm no expert on lore to give any criticism, but I can recognize how much pride and hard work goes into a video. For that alone, you are an amazing person and I hope you continue on with this great career path you have chosen. Thank you for all you do to provide us hours of factual entertainment.
Let’s go new series to spend my time on
1:23:16 kind off untrue, it is theorized that iron tarkus was grabbed and thrown by the iron golem all the way from top of Sen's fortress to anor londo, that's why we see that broken glass there and tarkua's body/leftovers in the corner of the room.
This is a fantastic Lore Video. 20 mins in and I am hooked.
I love that you're talking DS1, but playing Majula during a bunch of it
Here we go :D another great series of awesome lore, cant wait for ds2 ;)
you contact is my new souls drug and easily you are already on the level of vividia just with these kinda content.
Aye lets go! Always good to get some lore!!
Lets Goooooooo! Finally a new video🎉
Easily the most underrated channel in the community. Waiting for people to realize what they’re missing
I was wondering what you are going to do about patches, maybe in the Elden ring npc video?
I was wondering where our final character was and saw the ending. Absolute peak 🤌🍳
your channel iws the shit man. Seriously love everytime i see an upload.
Love your videos so much!
so helpful knowing the mechanics behind this. thanks for the info :)
Great video keep up the great work!
Love the ending !!! :D
Legend.
First video and already love it keep up the good work you are amazing
Great Video!
Totally killed Elizabeth on both my play throughs. On total mistake.
No one gives you enough credit for starting the video with the Catacombs blacksmith breaking through the wall. That was peak
S tier channel
This is awesome bro
I love your videos so much ❤❤❤❤❤
I forget which item it is that you trade with the crow, I think it's the xanthous crown but it gives you the ring of favor and protection, linking xanthous king Jeremiah to fia. He might be related to two god like figures but not sure if that changes things for him
I haven’t even played these games yet but I love medieval games lore
Perfect timing
I really enjoyed this videk
I feel like lore wise the Fair Maiden can probably still cast pyromancies/flame sorceries and just chooses not to, but I could be wrong.
Also, for Beatrice, there were other early sorceries. The chaos witches used flame sorceries rather than pyromancy (only became pyromancy with Salaman/Quelana), and its hinted Seath had his own long before the Dragon School was established as well.
11:16 bro snuck in the hardest materialist analysis of Dark Souls I have ever heard and really thought we wouldn't notice 😮
Great work, comrade ✊
during the siegmeyer bit i don't think he was captured by silver knights, i always thought the implication was that he climbed in through the window, tried to progress forward, got sent packing by the 3 knights (ah, were you repelled by the silver knights?) and then just decided to wait instead of finding another way around
To put my Fair Lady on the bottom of any list, regardless of the context, is blasphemy. Eggy boys en route to your location, danger close.
*spams “Well, what is it!”* Fair Lady? Is that what they call my free Fire Keeper Soul?
Haven't watched yet, but I'm pretty comfortable betting that Havel is gonna be in the top ten. Guy's a beast
“Had to be said” after this entire dissertation is crazy 😂
Can you provide the cliff notes for your essay
@@Mo_MudabberPrince “GOAT” Ricard
Dude…it’s a game.
I bet the reason Eingyi was banished from the swamp was because his poison pyromancy creation turned it into Lordran's first poison swamp! XD
Im saving this video for later. I do like Elden Ring but after the DLC drops im going to need content that isn't just ER DLC as it will be for months probably.
Dialogue can be unlocked with the fair lady if wearing the old witch ring.
Black iron turkus is a hero 🥶🥶
Wow Siegmeyer is low. I didn‘t expect him to be especially high, he does need help, but we only help him at a couple of points and that‘s enough to get him through most of the game.
Yes he gets stuck in Anor Londo, but he actually got into Anor Londo and then got out after we helped him with Silver Knights once.
As a philosopher I find many underlying philosophical conceptual traces in your work and analysis. Keep it up, they are truly enriching.
Precillia and the ancient serpents: am i a joke to you
Is Gwynevere not an NPC? Or did I miss her placement?
Gwynevere is an illusion cast by Gwyndolin, Gwynevere the character does not appear in dark souls
DS2 will be interesting, not that many legendary warriors but definetly each one interesting with their own goals
Nice vid :))
Kirk is my favorite NPC character from Dark Souls besides Solaire ofc.
I don't know about mr rank 0 there. I accidentally one shot patches with carian sovereignty in NG+4 the other day. Thought it would just instantly make him surrender.
Can you do the Demon Souls Bosses soon?
nr.0 is Mat the mushroom, one of the small mushroom people
Something I always loved about Havel's lore is how it emphasizes how strong the player is.
Well, it's widely speculated that the Havel we encounter is not the actual one (you know, because of DS3) but yeah, we're walking death
This video is amazing
Just for your information, Ciaran is pronounced "keer-in". It's Irish Gaelic for "little dark one". I don't recall if it's pronounced properly in the game or not because it's been a minute since I've played, but in case you encounter the name in the real world, I'm sure they'll appreciate the correct pronunciation
Few things in DS provides me more satisfaction than killing Petrus. Coward and deceptive
Did he forget Beatrice?!?!
How did youtube not update me on new UPLOADS?!?!? DEMON SOULS WHEN?
Excited for Elden ring
I'd put logan above any knight of gwyn. He's constantly referenced as being adjacent to the lords.
