      @@tiringsarcasm I mean, wasn't if obvious that Valve made the second game alone? if you put any other Valve game and compare it with l4d2, you can clearly see why only Valve made the 2nd one:
      L4D2 feels different than L4D, one tried to represent horror movies as close as possible, making almost all campaigns night-based to deep the horror experience and make most locations city based to convey the sense of an generic apocalypse, and made sure to portray the characters as realistic as possible and with very few comedic/chessy lines (aka Turtle Rock's concept)
      the other one tried to make the game as replayable as possible, by focusing more on gameplay features, more variety for the campaigns and less horror experience, with a big increase of personality for the survivors, giving them more comedic lines and less serious tones, and while maintaining the horror feel of its counterpart, it wasn't nearly as serious and felt more lighthearted and hopeful than the other game. (aka Valve's own design).
      If you compare both games you can see a drastic turn in terms of concept, so I don't really understand how people can't not see how "Valvey" the second game is in comparison to the first one. They always cared more about replayability than atmosphere for their game, nothing wrong with that since L4D2 is better than 1 in every possible way except atmosphere.

      The lady offers a different perspective because she doesn't see what's wrong at first sometimes. And thats the problem with the industry. Most games are trying to appeal to the "casual" gamer. The kind of person who plays the most normie games ever. You wouldn't catch that kinda person playing something like Nier and understanding the genius of it. They would be like "this game's stupid." And continue playing the latest call of duty or something. The game's industry isn't trying to sell there games to the people who actually play them. Mainly because there games are shit. There trying to sell them to people who are naïve to what makes a game worth there time and money.

    There's the fact that Back4Blood kinda marketed this as "From the creators of Left4Dead" and saying "It's Left4Dead but bigger" which ended up being bigger but less polished in comparison. Valve did polished the game and thought about the player experience while playing the game while Turtlerock studios just "made a game" and thought that adding more content is enough to meet L4D's player experience. You can see and listen from the commentary that Valve wanted you to be immersed with the environment, infected (zombies), and character.

    It's amazing how many little details they managed to put into L4D2 that you never truly realize are there until you play Back 4 Blood and notice their absence.
    It's also quite amazing how people with a background of working on L4D2 somehow managed to drop the soap so many times. They had a winning formula already in front of them, made (at least partially) by their own hands and then they just decided to cut most of it.
    To be fair, I'm sure the mo-cap, the many wound patterns, the realistic shadows and other details cost a lot of time and money to make, but if you're making a spiritual successor to a game you kind of have to bite the bullet and do it.
    You can't make a spiritual successor that's worse in many ways and expect the people you attract (based on the fact that they loved the original, which means they're bound to notice the lack) to just shrug.
    Not gonna lie, watching the video was a bit sad. Felt like a carbon copy of L4D2 after someone took a knife to it and carved off many of the choicer bits, selling the leftovers for a premium and expecting praise.
    The last 30 or so seconds really rammed his point home, too. That four or five people that worked on the game would split off from Valve and kind of claim L4D2 for their own when they made up what, 5 %?, of the developer team is really a little bit audacious and doesn't feel that good when you see all the interviews of those enthusiastic Valve devs that worked on much of the core concept and realization of the game.
    Loved that bit of editing magic, removing "creators of *the critically acclaimed Left 4 Dead 2*" and replacing it with *Evolve*.

  • @ArtekGeneral

    L4D2 is one of the best video games ever made, period. Especially within the coop genre.
    I still occasionally play it for my late night gaming sessions. Nothing insane, just casually beating an advanced campaign with some randoms (hopefully not the min-max speedrunners who ruin all the immersion).
    It holds up amazingly even to this day. And there's always workshop to fix it up to modern standards - a higher res model here, a new set of animations there, improved skybox this, enhanced lighting that and suddenly it's like this game didn't came out in 2009.
    Crowbat's video highlights one thing about game design: it's the little details that make the game truly special and alive.
    What does the ability to move or break some chairs around adds to the gameplay? Nothing, nada. And yet you feel the difference when you play a game that has physics VS a game that has none. Spoilers: the one with flying chairs is like 50% more fun.
    They didn't had to give us this hyper detailed gore system, didn't had to give us interactive environment or physics, didn't had to give us fluid hybrid animations. All of that is just flavour visuals.
    And yet it makes all the difference for a video game.
    Bare minimum: nobody will ever say that the game is worse because you made it so zombies tilt a little when sprinting sideways. But everybody will point out when a direct competitor does not.
    In fact i'd like to hang a little on the fluid animations. That's the one thing that truly sets L4D from other games of the genre, including KF2, GTFO and others.
    The fluid animations not only look cool but they're fun to shoot it. You know what's not fun to shoot at? A monster that instantly snaps in 90 degree angles trying to get around an obstacle.
    Not only it breaks immersion, but it makes him that much more frustrating of a target because his position changes too suddenly to keep up.
    L4D zombies are smooth in their movements - and that smoothness makes it easier to anticipate and aim at them, making the overall experience so much better.

    • @ceu160193
      @ceu160193 2 роки тому +4

      Interactive/dynamic environment adds a lot to gameplay, actually. It started in Half-Life 2, where player could protect themselves from bullets by holding sheet of metal in front of them, or throw heavy objects at enemies to kill them(or paint them, if you throw can of paint). With enemies also being able to use physics against you, such as zombies pushing objects/throwing headcrabs at you, elite soldier energy ball pushing you back and possibly into fatal fall, etc. It adds new meaning to "use environment to your advantage" tip, as instead of simply memorising good spots, you have to adapt on the move and be mindful not just of enemies, but also of any useful/dangerous objects nearby.

    • @ArtekGeneral
      @ArtekGeneral 2 роки тому +2

      @@ceu160193 Well, that comes into play in a first person shooter like half-life yes, especially since that game is all about utilizing its' physics engine to its best capability.
      But in L4D there is next to no meaningful interaction between environment and either survivors or zombies. Zombies just rush straight through or break things that stop them if their AI can't come up with a better plan, for players its usually just a small obstacle that can stop them from running and escaping although i hardly remember any case where that mattered enough to start shooting some table in your way. Boomer's explosion doesn't turn the chairs into projectiles or anything (thank god) - it's pure visual flavour, yet i'm so grateful they added that.

    I know I'm a bit late from the bandwagon but let me expand a little bit on 15:00.
    In L4D2 and possibly L4D, bullets penetrate materials. It penetrates zombies and walls alike. This is extremely massive for me at least, since I can shoot a rifle through a brick wall and expect whoever behind that brick wall is gonna - if not dropped immediately - then at least wounded. Doors are not just breakable, they're thin enough for survivors to spray an Uzi through it and hit whatever is behind that door. That clip of B4B's M16A2 failing to penetrate a _board of wood_ almost kills my hope for buying B4B.
    And then let's compound it with the audio. For example, Bill is walking into Mercy Hospital. Then suddenly the Boomer's piano jingle plays. Bill knows there's a Boomer had just spawned and is tracking him, but he does not have a visual. Another gaggle of Boomerism and Bill narrows down where it is. It's not in front of him, that much is clear, but it's definitely not behind him, but rather behind an ambulance near the hospital entrance. Taking a wild gander, Bill then aims his AK at the ambulance and lets out a quick burst. The bullets penetrate through the ambulance, hit the Boomer and it blows up, Bill doesn't get spewed on and he continues to walk into the saferoom.
    In B4B, there is no distinct audio. You can hear, at least, stumps of special ridden behind the wall, but apparently your bullets can't penetrate the saferoom door (which it does in L4D2), so the cleaners take a wild gander and get exposed to about three crushers who was just playing cards behind a sedan and now is returning to discount Charger'd them with little to no audio cues.

    The thing with TRS and B4B is that they did not learn ONE SINGLE THING off the fiasco that was EVOLVE.
    NOTHING was learned. Not only that but everyone back then blamed Take2 for Evolve's failure and now with B4B, we can see that the failure of the game came from TurtleRock Studios.

    It pains me how scummy B4B's advertising was. They were 100% conscious that the game was ass and it had no right being compared to Left 4 Dead. But we've been waiting for L4D3 for a decade, and they knew how big the hype would be if they flailed their arms to the sky and yelled they were going to make the spiritual successor to L4D. They KNEW that the game was so bad it wasn't going to last in the long term. That's why they littered it with DLCs before the playerbase died out.

    With popular games like Minecraft and PUBG, shortly after there are several clone games, essentially rushed rip-offs trying to piggyback on the wave of popularity the original created. Back 4 Blood feels like such a game, but is even more pathetic because the original is over a decade old, and the people behind it were part of the original, so they should have known about the amount of polish needed to achieve the immersion of the original.
    B4B's developers seem like the "wouldn't this be cool?" type of people, thinking that adding more stuff (weapon/enemy types, more levels, larger maps, etc) makes a game better, wheras Valve are more "Does this new thing work with the current system? How can we make it flow more naturally and be immersive?"

    Unpopular opinion, but I think crowbcat is pretty biased in this particular video.
    I understand things like MOCAP death animations, a more physics-based/versatile engine like Source, and generally less buggy game are some of the things that make the L4D games really special. But focusing on things like knocking down a zombie in riot gear is better than _not_ knocking down a zombie in riot gear? (They do get knocked down if they're hit by surprise)
    This is extremely nitpicky and sort of dishonest. Crowbcat portraying AI pathing issues in B4B sort of implies that's not an issue with L4D when there _are_ L4D pathing issues and many more within its first few months of release. Crowbcat ignored B4B having _functioning_ hitboxes, door destruction (that he also criticized The Division for _downgrading_ destructible environment, so why wouldn't he include that in this comparison video? Probably for the sake of saying "B4B bad L4D good").
    B4B zombies knock _into each other_ when shoved, making shoving a much more useful mechanic overall. B4B has diversified the game loop a bit more substantially rewarding curious players with collectable items such as copper, throwables, weapon attachments, tools, and meds. Corruption cards (things that make the level harder like more hazards/bosses) help the player buy the things they need to face up to those challenges. This was a huge issue for me when I was creating the L4D2 campaign "Black Mesa", it was difficult to make the experience very different per playthrough as you could only reward the player with the same type of meds and weapons before they've already attained their preferred setup.
    The card system that was entirely overlooked in this video really helps with the replay value of the game and helps the player see the game from very different perspectives from being the special/boss killer to being the horde tank or even the money horder, or the healer.
    Kira is the perfect reaction of a far less biased opinion. She's not looking to look down on one game or the other. She sees two horror shooters. Granted, one a lot more rushed than the other. If she actually played both games, it may be the case that she would prefer L4D but at face value the things presented in this video don't exactly prove one feature is better than other. They're simply different. Though, I can understand people being more bitter about their differences when one is $1 to $20 while the other is $60.
    Make no mistake B4B has its fair share of problems such as AI teammates not being able to sit still for 5 seconds, some networking synchronization issues making it look like some special infected attacks come at light speed, joining a game without the ability to take a break (or even keep your weapons in the map you joined in for the next level). Not having mods was a big mistake, TRS doesn't need to provide any tools, the community has the power to do that themselves (look at the state of Super Mario 64 modding).
    If neither Kira nor Kit knew of L4D or B4B, what would their opinions on the games be if they saw the "B4B is better than L4D" equivalent of this video?:

      Agree. New games have problems that need to be ironed out. Left for dead has had 10 years of updates. Also only showed negatives of b4b while only showed positives of l4d. Both are good games

    • @Nikotheleepic
      @Nikotheleepic 2 роки тому

      unironically, cope more shill, b4b is so soulless, collectables are useful as skinners box treats for the rats, just as the pseudo depth of the card system. Just as you claimed he had overstated problems with b4b and understated problems with lfd, the comparison you are creating that at launch, the issues were even comparable, is laughable. I doubt you've played left for dead when it was released, I did, unlike games made by "unity developers" today, game devs had to actually understand how to program and thus would generally put much more effort into their design, instead of having a game that is unfinished for years after release. Nice multiplayer mode though, instead of the entire campaign its limited to a tiny area, how amazing. all of the benefits you listed in fact are sort of souless standards of the modern mobile game dev, little pellets in order to lead the player along.
