Travelling around Palawan on a budget, how to save money on a day trip to the Underground River

Travelling can be expensive. I wanted to visit the Underground River, World UNESCO Heritage site but the hotels were charging P2,200 each (about $45US) for a day trip from Puerto Princesa. So I decided to travel as an independent traveller, making my own way there to see just how much I could save but cutting out the 'middle man'. I saved quite a bit as it turned out - quite a significant amount especially if you are travelling in a group.
