How to find good reference images: Learn the medical name for things which will help you to find clearer, better reference images instead of other people's makeup. So using 'laceration' instead of cut, 'ballistic trauma' instead of bullet hole, etc. I will often google image search but that can come up with -horrible- results so be careful, start out small. I also follow accounts that show good reference images and the discussion behind what happened, so people like mrs_angemi or medicaltalks on instagram, or makeup fx reference image groups on Facebook. I also like going on the Figure 1. app (like instagram for medical professionals) and you can search by body part or key words to find stuff on there too.
Freakmo ...Or you could visit 4chan or Reddit 😨 Seriously though? Figure1 is an AMAZING app for /ethical/ Doctor submitted quality reference photos. It's basically Instagram for medical professionals.
Freakmo I know, and I used to think it was no big deal but now I do. I've noticed how much of a difference it is and I want to hit my past self. Personally I think I did good for a 9 year old but still, I wanna cry from what I used to do.
I've been looking for a video like this for so long! There are tons of tutorials showing how to do things the right way, but no one talks about common mistakes and how to go about fixing them.
Another couple of tips: 1. Get yourself a good mattifying creme, then if your wax/latex/silicone/gelatine/whatever looks too shiny you can mattify it to match your skin so it doesn't stand out as being fake or different from your surrounding skin. 2. Avoid spirit gum if you can, that stuff is evil. My favourite adhesive is prosaide, I don't think it's any more expensive than spirit gum. 3. Also another beginner mistake - thinking it will work the first time you try it. Most of my first attempts aren't great or what I want. With this kind of makeup you usually need to practice, don't expect to be an expert the first time you try, and don't be discouraged by failures - it's how you learn! 4. yes there are two number sevens in the video my bad.
Yeah I use prosaide for my bald caps, and then prosaide cream (so a bit thicker) for around the edges if they're not blending out nicely / there's a visible edge)
As an adhesive it doesn't have the best... adhesion, and it has a strong and unpleasant smell. But the main reason I dislike it is because of the ether in it. It's quite common to feel like it's burning when it goes onto the skin, and if the ether hasn't fully evaporated before adhering something on top, the ether can get trapped and cause chemical burns on people's skin. So kinda unpleasant ingredients that make a lot of people's skin react to it. Prosaide is great, it's acrylic/water based and really gentle.
glad you tell us before I uninformedly just buy it. Really want to learn fx makeup but the stuff are quite expensive and information is limited too :/ I guess I just have to know where to look
Ugh those instagram makeup artists drive me crazy! They use liquid latex and tissue paper to create wounds, and then the finished look is soo anatomically incorrect and mishapen that they end up dousing it in fake blood to make it look even remotely real! This video must be seen by everyone! Youre our only hope freakmo !
Witte Artistry when it comes to blood, a lot of times less is more. Like I never could understand why some people spend forever trying to make a realistic wound, and adding a ton of detail just to ruin all of that work by drowning it in blood. In the end you have spent hours on a wound just to achieve something you could have done in a few minutes. Major pet peeve of mine, lol.
Yeah. I always say, do what you like, learn from it all, just know what is realistic and what is not. We call it the "M.O.I." (Mechanism of injury(or illness)) how it happened.
Would you ever consider coming to NY and doing a class? I love your work and the fact that you come on UA-cam to not only show us tutorials but to teach us how to properly do FX makeup is amazing. You're such an inspiration!
As a professional fx makeup artist, THANK YOU for making this video!!! YOU have voiced what the rest of us have been saying for a while! I'm totally sharing this all over my social media! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!
Oh my gosh, THANK YOU for the tip about the fake blood beading up!! Every time I use blood on wax, I have to move it around every couple seconds to get a good picture of it!! SO annoying!
I've been a subscriber from the very beginning. It really is such a wonderful thing to see how much you've grown as an artist! Tbh I don't think I'll ever try to do sfx makeup myself, but seeing a new video of yours always excites me. Your work is always amazing!
as somebody who wants to do some minor fx makeup for upcoming Halloween, this was more informative than the "tutorial" videos that just basically shows speed progression of how the artist did their make up and just listed the materials they used in the descriptions. you, on the other hand, made sure to list do's and don'ts as well as list a margin of safety when it comes to beginner fx work. so thank you! :>
fangirled over this and the fifth element tattoo on your models arm. Im a beginner sfx artist and i love your realism and effort towards the tiniest of details. Keep up the good work !!
An awesome way to make cheap blood darker and thicker/stickier is adding a black cream face/body paint- a small amount. We did it in emergency times at our haunted house I volunteer at and it's seriously pretty great for shading!
Although my videos aren't bloody and gory I am proud of not being an offender of number 11. I'm still very happy my makeup videos are original. That's why I don't post so much. I don't want to do what everyone else is doing or done. Another reason I'm a fan of your channel. You're always creating something new. Thank you!!
I plan on going into sfx makeup for theater or movies in the future, in my luck i have a family friend who already does it for a living. So im thankful to have someone to help me get started. And having extra tips from you was a huge help!
OMG I was thinking of doing a video about the same things: edges, color matching, too much blood etc. This is wonderful, it's so clear and informative! Well done.
+Freakmo dish soap works good but...If you want to keep it mouth safe a good tip is use soap you use in your mouth daily. Toothpaste. I find it does the same thing & the cheapest one work the best.
Yeah I've never tried adding that actually but I heard Rob Smith's interview on Battle with Bits of Rubber and he said that's a common additive to bloods, which is why some of them taste minty (I'm looking at you, Mouldlife)
Love this advice! There's one thing I disagree with though, and that's the part of not just following tutorial videos, but trying to design something yourself. While it's definitely true that you need to let go of copying and start designing on your own if you want to get really good, just following tutorials is the best way to learn how anatomy, materials, and designs work, especially if you're an absolute beginner. Obviously don't go posting other people's designs all over social media without their approval and properly crediting them, but also don't be ashamed of being in the learning stage where you still have to be guided through the process step by step by someone who's more experienced. And that goes for pretty much everything you're trying to learn. I think people who are experienced at something tend to forget that while it's not acceptable to do if you're a (semi)professional, the imitation stage is as important to learning as knowing how to observe and eventually transitioning into designing it all by yourself.
Man, you are soooo on point. Like literally!! Thank you for pointing out the mistakes that even "experienced" make up artists do. Really helpful information
I have been a makeup artists for over 40 years and this is great advice and a great selection of books you are showing. I wish that I'd had them when I started. All I had was Dick Smith's Do It Yourself Monster Makeups book.
You explain things perfectly and your videos are a great source for information. I just googled, hand lacerations, instead of, hand cuts, and damn, what a difference. Hand cuts were just giving me sfx. These images for, lacerations though, wow, just wow. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for saying so much of this! I'm a sfx artist and I lead a large team of people for a haunted attraction and I find myself saying so much of this over and over again. Just because you saw someone else do it on youtube doesn't mean it's safe!
This helped so much! I've got a huge interest in fx but unfortunately there's no local shops that supply things like nose and scar wax and proper quality fake blood. So after a little googling I managed to find a recipe using Vaseline and corn flour! I also made blood out of maple syrup and red food dye. I was proud of the cut I managed to make on my little sister's forehead, but after watching this video I realized I did all the wrong things haha. Still a good first try!
Love this. My pet peeve is also shitty photos of what looks to be great looking work. Good lighting helps not only good photos but helps with colour matching. On a side note if you wanted to sculpt a butthole arm makeup your example of what not to do would be perfect 😜
I'm glad you saw my butthole symbolism, you really get me. I really hate it when it's a shit makeup but someone has photographed it well -either in over saturated light or dramatic lighting, then photoshopped it to hell, then posted it making their shitty makeup look half good but 75% of it isn't real.
This video is so great! I already know all this mistakes but is so cool you make something like this. I especially love the last advice about being original with your own creations :D
Very nice, high quality video. Thank you so much for number 10. Too many people are doing dumb shit and the irony is that doing a makeup with an aluminum can or scissors sticking out of your face is grounds for getting the real injury.
Look at anatomy references, surgery videos(ed heads, UA-cam, etc. not too nasty as it’s a clean scientific environment) or videos made by trauma doctors (explaining healing process/body’s response to traumatic injuries, anatomy, and likely be less disturbing than say a picture of a body or critically injured person in a car accident, or a murder scene.) You can also just research the skin, especially if it pertains to yourself or your model.
its encouraging to hear you have desensetised yourself because i am trying to become an sfx artist and although gore is not so bad i have trypophobia, i am slowly trying to force myself to watch videos to get over it.
This was such a helpful video - thanks! I'm a beginner at this and I'm just delving into the actual makeup part, and these are some really solid tips. Also, it's nice to hear it's supposed to be difficult and took you about a year to get good :)
Should Mehron Extra Flesh be used after applying liquid latex on top of the latex? ...or should Extra Flesh be applied before stippling on liquid latex?
I should be asleep because it's like 3am here! But I saw a Freakmo notification and couldn't resist 😂! This video is awesome and SO true! It drives me nuts when people build an inch of wax off of their skin! Haha XD What a cool trick mixing dish soap with the blood! Oh man it kills me when people put watered down acrylic paint on their skin!! 😣 Great video!! Keep up the great work :)
Witte Artistry and it's hard to sculpt an injury and think ahead to how and where it's going to be applied and then, how big you can go before it looks like a mini mask.
I loved this video! I just got my first skin illustrator palettes and I've been practicing color matching. I would love to see a video from you explaining how to color match with the light flesh tones palette.. maybe even cream makeups. And what will work on what builds like latex, silicone, gelatin and wax. Thank you for all of your educational videos. I watch every single one.
Hi Kiana. I am studying my diploma in creative make up for screen and media . I'm a perth girl too! Just wanted to thank you for this vid. Keep up the good work ☺
thank you so much for this video. i'm sad to say that yes i have made a few of these mistakes. i am teaching myself and just assumed that following the bigger makeup channels was the best way to learn. i have recently started to do my own research. with that and being busy with college my makeup practice has gone on the back burner but thanks to this video i am going to try and do better makeup from reference pictures of real wounds. heres hoping i don't get too squeamish lol. a look i need to do soon for my film college course is black tears so i am hoping i can find some good reference material. also can you recommend a good thing to use for black tears? as i don't want to use anything bad next to mine or anyone else's eyes.
I've done most of them too, don't worry :) Kryolan has black eye blood that is eye safe, but it does come out slightly blue when it rolls down the cheek
Great job on the opening of this with the image of an old wound being stitched up. Pretty gory in a good way. Also showing multiple types of burns and severity in that slide too. I'm not a fan of pink blood/liquid and a stickler for accuracy as one can with makeup. Also throwing a tip out that may or may not be covered, always make blood don't use actual animal blood on a set. Trying to think of the movie with the helicopter blades and I still remember briefly seeing the blood had turned brown, which it would throughout the time line and I never see that done. But, what happened was, the next shot of the same face the blood was red. Editing and things all need to be taken into consideration and also testing reaction for allergies on actors. Cool video and good to see people teaching some tips and tricks of things I notice easily when watching horror to science/med type shows.
Hi I'm not sure if you will see this but would you be interested in making and organisation video to show how you organise fx products and tools. I think it would be really helpful :)
Even as just a self-taught horror artist, all those mistakes make me cringe so hard... I recognize many of them from my own community, for some reason people put a ton of gore over realism when it comes to creating disturbing imagery.
I have used your ideas to create a mask of my own face. I didn't have your stuff to make it with, so I had to improvise but I wish I could show you what you inspired.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO THERE ARE SO MANY RIDICULOUS VIDEOS THAT HAVE MILLIONS OF VIEWS!!! People just click on the pictures of pretty girls with stupid fake blood everywhere. People who want to learn SPFX makeup are NOT getting good information from tutorials done by amateurs everywhere. I really appreciate you showing people how to actually do lacerations correctly because it pisses me off to no end.
I like to mix my wax with lots of white since I'm SUPER pale. When I was just starting to do wounds I was actually using non toxic glue (the stuff for kids) because it dried clear and it was easy to blend it into my skin almost perfectly (I only needed to use a very small amount of concealer to blend it completely)
This is actualy realy help full. I've made the mistake of putting black in the center but that's because I did not have any dark reds. I don't have enough money for any of the stuff she was using.
I personaly do put quite a bit of blck in my wounds to resemble a deep cut i also but quite alot of blood and colours nd i am very happy with the results 😊
If you are not great at matching skin I recommend making a wound that looks older perhaps infected then the skin around the wound will be darker, reddish and even bruised.
I have taught SO MANY fx classes and given my students exactly the tips you're sharing, and then they make wounds and effects of their own, and I wonder, were they even listening??? Then (as you said) they throw a lot of blood over top and think they're so cool. Nope. ... Thanks for this video. I even learned a couple tricks from you. Keep it up :)

Oh man it kills me when people put watered down acrylic paint on their skin!! 😣
Great video!! Keep up the great work :)
Witte Artistry and it's hard to sculpt an injury and think ahead to how and where it's going to be applied and then, how big you can go before it looks like a mini mask.
Agreed. Realism definitely takes a lot of time, skill, and forethought.
And screwing up! Lol. It's all part of the journey.
Yup! The best lessons are learned through trial and error! :)
Witte Artistry o9
I loved this video! I just got my first skin illustrator palettes and I've been practicing color matching. I would love to see a video from you explaining how to color match with the light flesh tones palette.. maybe even cream makeups. And what will work on what builds like latex, silicone, gelatin and wax. Thank you for all of your educational videos. I watch every single one.
you're always so respectful wowie :")
9:57 I’m confused..where did it go?
FINALY , someone who tells the mistakes that we
make , and i'm glad that's you THANXX
Hi Kiana. I am studying my diploma in creative make up for screen and media . I'm a perth girl too! Just wanted to thank you for this vid. Keep up the good work ☺
never done this in my life or plan on it what am i doimg here
This video and person has a Massive appeal to education and the people who would like to know about actual wounds. Love and like.
thank you so much for this video. i'm sad to say that yes i have made a few of these mistakes. i am teaching myself and just assumed that following the bigger makeup channels was the best way to learn. i have recently started to do my own research. with that and being busy with college my makeup practice has gone on the back burner but thanks to this video i am going to try and do better makeup from reference pictures of real wounds. heres hoping i don't get too squeamish lol. a look i need to do soon for my film college course is black tears so i am hoping i can find some good reference material. also can you recommend a good thing to use for black tears? as i don't want to use anything bad next to mine or anyone else's eyes.
I've done most of them too, don't worry :)
Kryolan has black eye blood that is eye safe, but it does come out slightly blue when it rolls down the cheek
Can I use homemade scar wax? (Flour and Vaseline) will that work for making wounds? I might make some
Me: *is a squeamish person*
Also me: yes i should watch this video
Fantastic video as usual! We need more people like you on UA-cam! Also loving the Fifth Element tattoo!
How do you stop your wax from drying out and crumbling away?
Hahaha it pretty much was the entire time I was filming this video and I had to keep smoothing out the surface. I really dislike wax.
Could you or do you have a video on shaping scar wax and what tools to use?
Even as just a self-taught horror artist, all those mistakes make me cringe so hard... I recognize many of them from my own community, for some reason people put a ton of gore over realism when it comes to creating disturbing imagery.
I have used your ideas to create a mask of my own face. I didn't have your stuff to make it with, so I had to improvise but I wish I could show you what you inspired.
Nice 5th Element tattoo on your model.
Cheers ;)
that q-tip trick you did in the dissected hand is absolutely genius
I loved that blood swatches
Jax Son other people swatch eyeshadows and lip sticks but no I want to see blood swatches XD
fifth element tattoo!! i love it!!
0:59 HOLD UP!! is that a 5th Element tattoo?!???!?!! RESPECT
Adrianna Jurek I totally did this too. Second guessed myself as too much of a fanboy. Lol.
If you have contacts normally, can you put in colored ones that don’t help your eyes see?
0:03 😂😂😂

Great video! Very insightful for every makeup artist. You did a really great job going into detail and using visuals
The middle finger at the start 😂😂
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO THERE ARE SO MANY RIDICULOUS VIDEOS THAT HAVE MILLIONS OF VIEWS!!! People just click on the pictures of pretty girls with stupid fake blood everywhere. People who want to learn SPFX makeup are NOT getting good information from tutorials done by amateurs everywhere. I really appreciate you showing people how to actually do lacerations correctly because it pisses me off to no end.
6:36 blood. blood. Gallons of the stuff.
Learn something new everyday! Though to me the best thing about this was the fifth element tattoo!!
Alistair!! I didn't know you knew eachother😮😆
Yesss! He lives just down the road from me, so we like doing FX stuff when we get time. Sometimes I guest lecture in his class too :)
Kiana and I are biffles
That's awesome!
Can I come re-do my certs Alistair? 😂
You did your diploma! :P
Wooooh this is so cool! I studied sfx/makeup etc about 20 years ago, but didn't do much sfx until just recently and your channel is a big help!
this scared me cuz it looks sooo real!!!!!! LMAOOOOOOOO
This video is the best so far, also who else did most of the mistakes she talked about 😆 but this will totally help me improve!
Yes! I hate when someone copies a makeup without give the credit to the original artist!
In the beginning on the wrist, is that those needle tattoos where they just smash a board of needles??
Why go through all this work when you can just get hurt yourself?
Dank Memes News Channel you want to get a real cut?
if i were you i just pick the fake one rather than the real one.
Jjijah Ocean
R/woooosh
I absolutely LOVE Leeloos tattoo from The Fifth Element!!!!! That is truly the coolest thing ever!!!
Who the heck just flipped me off at the start of the video?
I like to mix my wax with lots of white since I'm SUPER pale. When I was just starting to do wounds I was actually using non toxic glue (the stuff for kids) because it dried clear and it was easy to blend it into my skin almost perfectly (I only needed to use a very small amount of concealer to blend it completely)
2019 ? :v
If u want to get dark blood for cheeper u can scrap a bit of black or dark dark purple eyeshadow (Matt eyeshadow)
i use toilet paper to make wounds
Victoria Girl *wounds
This is actualy realy help full. I've made the mistake of putting black in the center but that's because I did not have any dark reds. I don't have enough money for any of the stuff she was using.
I personaly do put quite a bit of blck in my wounds to resemble a deep cut i also but quite alot of blood and colours nd i am very happy with the results 😊
If you are not great at matching skin I recommend making a wound that looks older perhaps infected then the skin around the wound will be darker, reddish and even bruised.
Hey! Best tut ever...one question if I may - what wax do you use and where can you get it from please?
I have taught SO MANY fx classes and given my students exactly the tips you're sharing, and then they make wounds and effects of their own, and I wonder, were they even listening??? Then (as you said) they throw a lot of blood over top and think they're so cool. Nope. ... Thanks for this video. I even learned a couple tricks from you. Keep it up :)
