    Your hair looks AMAZING!!
    I've been making flaxgel and using it on my hair for a while now and I have no plans of using anything else ever again. I love it so much! (But oatgel works great, too!)
    - 1.5 tbsp flaxseeds
    - 1.5 cups water (I usually double this amount to thin it out a bit and because it stretches the gel out more, and I have a lot of hair)
    - 1 tbsp oil.
    - 1 tsp vanilla extract (or whatever extract I have that I like the smell of. Optional, and I don't know if it harms or helps my hair, it's just something I experimented adding to my recipe one day and I just found it makes my hair have this subtle pretty scent to it, so I kept it in.)
    I heat this to boiling or until it gets gooey and 'snotlike' (for lack of a better word), strain the seeds and usually then I put the seeds in a smoothie so there's no waste and I put the gel back in the pot with the oil and heat it to boiling again to incorporate the oil (which I find is necessary for reducing frizz and possible residue that can occur if I don't apply the gel evenly enough.) This makes a single batch that I use all of on my hair which is a few inches below shoulder length, so I don't have to worry about having leftover that I then have to store in the fridge and remember to use the rest of at a later date.)
    ** I have actually tried doing the same recipe but with ground flax (because it's all that I had at the time) and it worked just as well, the only problem is obviously you have to strain it REALLY WELL or you're likely to end up with bits in your hair that you then have to gentle pick/brush out with your fingers. It does work though, if that's all you have.
    One day I came across oat gel, which I didn't know was a thing at the time, and I decided to follow the same recipe as my flax gel one (except swapping out the flax for oats - which I've tried and had success with both quick oats and whole oats), and surprisingly it worked great, too! I feel like I like flax gel better thought because I feel like this gel leaves more white-coloured flakes if I apply to thickly in areas (they're small but annoying, and you can see them if you look closely), and when I touch my curls (as I have a habit of doing) sometimes there's this weird residue (which doesn't matter I guess s'long as no one is sitting their touching your hair). But yeah, works in a pinch, so I mostly use the flaxgel recipe I wrote above, but I go back and forth depending on what ingredients I have at the time that I find myself needing to refresh my hair/curls.
    ** Keep in mind that this recipe is just what works for me, so I would give it a test on a day when you know you won't be going out any time soon just in case it ends up not working for you. Even for me, I had to experiment with this a lot before I got it to a point where I'm happy with it. You might even find you need more flax, or more water, or less flax/water. I came across a tutorial on flaxgel ages ago and I remember her saying that a) it's very important that you have enough water in your hair, and b) when she was applying it her hair 'feels like slimy seaweed' and thats what you want it to feel like. I kept that in mind when applying gel in the beginning stages and I think that was very helpful for me to determine how to tailor this recipe to fit my hair type and length. :)
    I literally just wash my hair and then immediately after getting out of the shower (when my hair is still dripping wet) I get right into applying the gel to my hair in the way that works for me and once I've done that I let it dry and boom I have all these lovely curls. I do literally nothing else except popping a bonnet on my head at night and then I wait until the morning to shake my hair out because I find that if I wait until then to break the cast on my hair (that hard outer coating that lots of gels give) then I will end up with less frizz. Obviously it'll probably work best if I did all this on the day that I intend to go out but I am too lazy to be waking up all that extra time earlier in the morning just to do my hair. I prefer doing it the day before so that if I do sleep in then I don't have to worry about my hair not being done.
    All I have to do is shake it out, front and back, side to side, a bit, apply a little oil (I use peppermint) and I'm good to go. Easiest hair routine ever (for me) and I highly recommend. You really need to have some natural curl though to see great results though. My Mum is probably type 1-2 and it didn't really do much of anything to her (I want to try again and use tools like curlers to see how the gel performs that way) but I have type 4 hair and my hair which I thought was just wavy and frizzy produced these BOMB curls after applying this. I didn't even know my hair had that potential!
    (Sorry, that was a long comment that no one asked for and probably no one will read, but I felt the need to share what I learned because I am obsessed with oat and flax gel now and I wish I had known about this back when I was still in school. xD)

    Yay giiiiirl! 😮 That is amazing!
    Then again, diy gels usually are. To me at least
    So far, I've tried flaxseed gel(the less dense the better, to me, and I have almost your same hairtype-the denser the harder to apply and smooth) and "cornstarch gel"; it's basically a diy gel here in italy a lot of us have tried, it's THE SIMPLEST: 1 table spoon of cornstarch for every glass of water, and that's it
    Cool video, and hello from Italy again! 😘🇮🇹💜
    Ps: You're very pretty, as usual.

    • @MyCrystalSwan

      Generally it's a gel that is better a prepoo treatment, like, left as if a mask. It hydrates a buttload, it does
      But I've seen some pics of girls with wavy/curlish hair who have used it for styling too and OH BOI, their hair looked gorgeous

    • @sarracg1211
      @sarracg1211 5 років тому

      Hello,
      Please for the cornstarch gel, what's the amount of water you use for each spoon of cornstarch?

    • @MyCrystalSwan
      @MyCrystalSwan 5 років тому +6

      @@sarracg1211 one tablespoon of cornstarch for every 200ml of water
      And you have to keep stirring while you prepare it and you know it's ready after 2 or 3 minutes that it started to boil, because it is becoming denser like a gel but still liquidy enough to be good for styling
      Or just make it of the consistency that you like

I saved the mix for a while bc I liked it so much and I had a decent amount of it, but it smelled super bad after a couple days so I wouldn’t save it again. my hair is sightly less curly than this (almost 2c) but this idea is awesome. I usually buy curl cream ( I cant stand any amount of crunch in my hair and I dont want to weigh it down because the curl is so loose they fall to waves at the end of the day anyway) but I made it a goal for myself this year to live a little more sustainably, so if i find a DIY hair gel I can use and get a similar result to my old product then I'll never need to buy the old one again. I wanna make flaxseed gel, I went to 2 different stores today and found NO flax seeds in sight????? so If I go to more stores tomorrow and find some that would be great but if it proves impossible then I'll do this! Actually, now that I've done a little research I might actually try multiple recipes. Chia seed gel (i dont have any rn either), both chia and flax mixed, this oat gel, and maybe even all of them mixed! (oat, chia, and flax)

      She did reply to a different comment saying that it can be stored for up to 2 weeks. Oats have fatty acids in them and a whole bunch of other nutrients that are great for adding moisture and help with damage. I know some do have protein in them so you may need to do some research to find ones that don't if your hair doesn't like it.

      That's pretty common, especially if your hair texture is on the finer side AND it's short. Maybe you could try refreshing it with water in a spray bottle and let it dry while you get ready in the morning?

      @Vi-rf5ld 5 років тому +1

      Alex S I tried that :( adding water through spray bottle doesn’t work, it only makes my hair wet and when they dry the curls are frizzy and not very defined

    I just tried this and left it on until my hair dried (3b curls mostly) and it left white tiny residues all over my hair :( ...I just washed it...did this happen to anyone else's hair? I used sheer black tights to strain the oats. The color and the consistency was the exact same as in the video
