I jumped on TodayTix and this was what I found...

Hey-thank you. outstanding upload~I'll be back. 🎥
I didn't know that u made theatre content and I'm all for it.
Oh, wow. Interesting. I was in this show! I played Dionne!
You should come down to San Diego next time you come to California. We actually have good theatre here. We have two professional level theatres, The Olde Globe and The La Jolla Playhouse, which produce Broadway level shows. And there are several semi-professional theatres, such as Cygnet Theatre and San Diego Rep, that do great productions. Diversionary Theatre is smaller and more experimental theatre. There are a couple of theatre companies that just do musicals (San Diego Musical Theatre and Moonlight) and are very good. Plus there are a number of small amateur/community theatre companies (like the one I just saw performing Heathers) which can be fun and very cheap tickets.
I'd love to spend some more time in San Diego! I've been there once before - I actually wrote my Uni dissertation there in an airbnb over the course of about a week weirdly - but it's been years since then. I'll be back one day!
you have greater nerve then me to actually go out in SF at night alone......
now LA is different...you need to try some of the smaller theatres in West Hollywood......
and have the main group in Century City and the Pantages in Hollywood
Yeah SF at night is definitely pretty terrifying - thankfully was staying quite near this theatre so it wasn't too scary a walk compared to some other parts of town!
I will be in LA this week so I'll do my best to check out as much theatre as possible while there!
I am so sad to see how scary SF is these days. The homeless situation is unfortunately out of control. SF is one, if not the most expensive city in the states. The cost of living is outrageous (worse than NYC). SF actually can be a magical place. Places like the Castro and such. But Downtown can feel dangerous.
HAIR is a very loosely structured show - on purpose. If there is not a strong point of view from the creatives. It’s what would be called a ‘Happening’ when it was written. When done well, it can be an amazing trip. It was revolutionary when it arrived in the 1960s much like Hamilton in 2010s Dreamgirls in the 1980s & A Chorus Line in the 1970s all of which BTW started at the Public Theatre) a theatrical juggernaut.
Milos Forman’s movie of Hair takes the simple plot about Claude being drafted and how it affects The Tribe - some people hate the movie - and expands on it, but it has some interesting aspects.
I hope you get to see a strongly conceived/directed production of Hair at some point. You visit to SF made me depressed.
Also I saw an amazing production of a Tiny Kushner play called ‘The Intelligent Homosexuals Guide…” at Berkeley Rep.
Anyway - keep up the good work - I enjoy your take on things.
@@Xscottnyc thank you!! Really useful having some more context on HAIR's background. Haven't heard of the "Happening" term before, definitely going to have to look that up and do some reading. Cheers!
Sorry you didn't get to see more of San Francisco as it really is a very beautiful city in many ways
I've seen many great shows at Berkeley Rep - Sorry that wasn't one of them - haven't seen the stage version but the original film of the same name is definitely one of my favorite horror films of the past decade - not sure how it would transfer to stage
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and it is one of my least favorite big cities - London is my personal favorite, also love NYC, Paris and Toronto
Have to warn you L A can be a real nightmare for a first time visitor - it is vast and sprawling with no real center - as Gertrude stein would say, there is no there there.
It is a city based in driving and cars - am assuming you won't be driving so public transport can be a real challenge
Also, depending on the area, safety
There are nice areas but all of them are far from each other
Pasadena, West Hollywood and West L A, and, especially, Santa Monica are really lovely
There are some nice big theatres and way way too many tiny, weird ones lol
Friend recently saw a revival of A Liitle Night Music at the Pasadena Playhouse (nice theatre) and really loved it
Stay out of what is called downtown L A - though the music center there is home to three grand theaters - the work at both the Ahmanson and Mark Taper Forum can both be very good but they're pricey
If you are using Uber expect to pay a lot as the distance to things can be crazy and traffic there is a nightmare most of the time
Hope this is helpful - and if you tell me what area you are staying in I can be of more detailed help
L A can be a confusing and challenging city to deal with - stay calm and focused - plan your journeys carefully - and I hope you enjoy your time there
Thanks so much for all the advice!! Luckily, I've spent a fair bit of time in LA over the years as I've often had work events to attend out here, so my spidey senses for staying safe and avoiding certain areas are decently tuned I think. It really is a shame that areas like downtown aren't safer, as the Ahmanson and Mark Taper are great venues, and it'd be nice to feel a bit less threatened when stepping out of them after watching a show! 😅
I've been to A Noise Within once in Pasadena too and am hoping to find time to make it back there during my trip this time. Not sure I'll manage, but crossing my fingers!
@Milo Theatre sorry you've missed that Little Night Music - heard it was great
How long are you in L A?
Still really enjoy your reviews and opinions
Wish we could talk about streetcar and little life sometime
And make sure you don't miss The Motive and the Cue at RNT - amazing show
