Guessing if you’re not in your fifties nobody gets the importance of the c4 ZR1. I’m glad I’m old enough to remember and appreciate the car. Old school all the way.
This car is bad to the bone with the Shelby Cobra rims. It was the turning point for the Corvette. Even though the engine itself was outsourced to Lotus, it was still technically from the factory and considered a exotic engine for its time. It also pissed off GM engineers that it was outsourced to Lotus and it led to a long term, in house developed more powerful Corvette engines (subject touched discuss a little in the video) in which the young folks reap the benefit today. In the end, that was the demise of Callaway and other Corvette tuners because now you can get power from the factory. That said, I don't care what anyone says... In my eyes a Callaway Corvette is still exclusive. If you can't get your hands on a C8 Z06 or C8 ZR1. I would take a C8 and have it modified.
The C4 ZR1 will be the next vehicle to go supernova in appreciation. My father passed this March and I was handed down a head to toe built C6 ZO6, and my fathers 1992 ZR1. It has the old school Borla full exhaust and Lingenfelter headers with only 12,000 miles on it. I would love to find an old school period correct APR twin turbo kit, or have someone make me a good kit with some small precision twins. The C6 has a Texas Speed long block and a YSI. I don't really like the way LS based engines sound with turbos. It jacks with the natural sound of the motor too much. Back in 92 when my dad got the car straight of the showroom floor they had a Lingenfelter twin turbo spinning on a lazy Susan. My father was a Police Officer here in Texas and like most Cops he had at least 1 "extra job" at all times. One of those jobs was working security at Houston Raceway Park. He would let me tag along as I was only 10 years old at the time. I would sit in the stands all night with him working right outside the tagging lanes. One of those times a bright red twin turbo Lingenfelter ZR1 pulled into the burnout box on a test n tune Friday night. I said I don't really dig the way LS motors sound when turbo'd, but my LT5 C4 is a whole different story. Its obviously because its a DOHC motor and when turbo it just comes together in a straight up aural orgasm. Like a 2J, RB, there are some motors which a turbo genuinely compliments and some that just don't. A new Powerstroke Diesel sounds like complete crap without a turbo. Back to my story, which I'm sure absolutely nobody is talking the time to read. Back in 92 if you had a street car running 12s that was quick, 11s was fast and 10s were race car numbers. So it seemed that no one but me even gave the ZR1 a second look. People still hadn't seen very many ZR1's before in 92. The internet was literally next to nothing back then. So unless you saw it in person you pretty much just never saw it unless you had a big ass shoulder mounted video camera. So when a stock looking C4 with drag skinnies staged nobody freaked out. Well when it yanked the fronts off the ground and ran hi 9s everyone collectively crapped themselves. You just never saw anything that fast unless it was a legit race car. There wasn't any JDM stuff making 1,000who back then. A fox body Mustang with a built motor and a Vortech blower was still like an 11 second car. Running 9s and being pretty damn quiet and looking bone stock was just unheard of. So long story short I desperately want to recreate that. That look, that sound, all of it. I have some trepidation however. I just don't want to hurt the motor. If I did and my dad was still alive he would have killed me. I remember when I was 11 and he was washing it and I knocked a broom handle over that was leaning against the garage, and it put the most infintesimaly small scratch on the hood. I have tinnitus as an adult today from how loud he yelled at me that day. I have missed the boat on the last few big wins when it comes to making some serious money on cars. I remember not too damn long ago when you could get a 993 Turbo for around 40k. I knew that when the Porscvhes started getting larger and more bourgeois that people were going to want that old school whale tail feel back again. I knew those cars were about to skyrocket and I just didn't buy one. The same gos for Vipers, the 1st gen Ford GT, Supras, etc etc etc. Im telling you buy a C4ZR1, because they are about to go up big time. GMC Cyclone's, and Buick GN's are a good buy too. Anyway, there's no damn way anyone read this thing. If you did, well thanks

I came from a import back ground and I also have a coyote mustang and just sold a mercury marauder both being DOHC v8’s. Yes it’s crazy how times have changed. I remember 10 years ago 11’s and 12’s were fast. Now stock mustangs and Camaros do that haha This was my first Callaway c4 seeing in person and it was truly an amazing experience riding in it and the owner Scott and I have become friends. A little late in the comments, i have a 96 Z-51 LT-1 car that i tuned with JETS DST. Not allot on the tuning of these cars but for 95-96, you can get a little more HP and allot more Torque from just tuning along with a few basic mods like exhaust, a 52mm TPIS throttle body, 160 degree thermo with lowering fan temps and a tuneup with replacement of all the old original feedback sensors and switches so the tune works well. Compared to stock, the tune made the car way more fun and aggressive to drive.
These things are insanely rare!! I believe like 40 and just 15 of them got the full supernatural setup!! Insanely sick!! By far my favorite corvette EVER!!! I couldn't imagine owning one!!! Very lucky guy!!! Even if you can find one good luck getting the owner to let go!!! And that light cluster is the warning light letting you know when something is wrong! If anything is lit up then that isn't good!! Lol I can tell the pull in that is great!!! The vettes don't seem or feel like your going so fast because it's so well balanced!! And Callaway put those coilovers on!! They pulled the leafspring and slapped those coilovers on!!! These cars are the ABSOLUTE SHIT!!!! TOP NOTCH CORVETTE!!!! Awesome video!! Don't get to see these very often!!!
A ZR1 with the Hennessey treatment is such a Beast! Insane in the membrane. This is for all intents and purposes a C4R. Not to mention, the C4 has a 'Big DIC'. Driver Information Center...

I never knew all the details about the supernatural till I met Scott. It’s pretty interesting to me. I knew about the sledgehammer and it was only one car.
It's more that the small block Chevy has (then and now) a massive performance aftermarket compaired to the almost non-existant aftermarket, performance or otherwise, for the LT5. The small block Chevy is also easier to work on being simpler and more compact. The LT5 is an impressive engine though. It's always cool to see someone do something with them.
I get that. I know the dohc stuff turned alot of the Chevy guys off back then because of it being more of a pain to work on. But yeah I’ve always be fascinated by this motor.
@@CPAJayhawk it would for sure pull away from a base C8 no problem. I don’t know much about the C8 Z06 yet. Probably be a good run. He recently had the car put on the dyno and it made 553hp and 485 tq.
This is a beautiful car my hat goes off to Reeves Callaway that recently passed away R.I.P. a lot of rich people think that because they have lots of money they are also engineers, a regrind cam is a cheap way to modify the car that is not good for this type of car.. there is no exhaust cam 🫤🫤 and porting the engine is a natural process. Now here comes the trolls and haters you are going to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about you keyboard warriors🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕

What a great job! My C 4 sure can't come anywhere close to all the hard work done to yours. Even without all the mods, it's sometimes a challenge to chase down panel lights when a fault rears its ugly head. Though with all the mods and obd 1 I don't know how you get around some of the settings even with a high-performance ECM prom? I went for the stock, but like new look. A Mear 245 hp. But torque isn't too bad. Nothing like your beast! Your work is spot on. Glad you got a chance to share your ride. Keep up the good work! THANKS
3:38 That isn’t why at all. They were designed by Lotus but built by Mercury Marine. It’s because rookie murikans preferred off the line torque and didn’t want high RPM horsepower. They were just ignorant unfortunately.

He sold his black Callaway that was a real deal true callway and got another one that was in bad shape and swapped everything off that to another clean ZR1. Then reeves Callaway signed it off as being a real Callaway and gave him all the paper work to authenticate it.

@shaneomatic9188 c5 may be most reliable and bodystyle is best in my opinion and the corvette museum in Kentucky 750k miles on it..I own a c5 had pthers this is my favorite 😍
@@shaneomatic9188 I mean its a clean car and all, but the front end markers look way too big and the melted together tail lights are nowhere near as cool as the separate recessed style. Stock is better in some cases, but people automatically associate unique or rare with cool.

It's more that the small block Chevy has (then and now) a massive performance aftermarket compaired to the almost non-existant aftermarket, performance or otherwise, for the LT5. The small block Chevy is also easier to work on being simpler and more compact. The LT5 is an impressive engine though. It's always cool to see someone do something with them.
I get that. I know the dohc stuff turned alot of the Chevy guys off back then because of it being more of a pain to work on. But yeah I’ve always be fascinated by this motor.

@@CPAJayhawk it would for sure pull away from a base C8 no problem. I don’t know much about the C8 Z06 yet. Probably be a good run. He recently had the car put on the dyno and it made 553hp and 485 tq.

This is a beautiful car my hat goes off to Reeves Callaway that recently passed away R.I.P. a lot of rich people think that because they have lots of money they are also engineers, a regrind cam is a cheap way to modify the car that is not good for this type of car.. there is no exhaust cam 🫤🫤 and porting the engine is a natural process. Now here comes the trolls and haters you are going to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about you keyboard warriors🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕
RIP reeves. Dude was a legend. He passed away a few months after we recorded this video.

What a great job! My C 4 sure can't come anywhere close to all the hard work done to yours. Even without all the mods, it's sometimes a challenge to chase down panel lights when a fault rears its ugly head. Though with all the mods and obd 1 I don't know how you get around some of the settings even with a high-performance ECM prom?
I went for the stock, but like new look. A Mear 245 hp. But torque isn't too bad. Nothing like your beast! Your work is spot on. Glad you got a chance to share your ride. Keep up the good work! THANKS

3:38 That isn’t why at all. They were designed by Lotus but built by Mercury Marine. It’s because rookie murikans preferred off the line torque and didn’t want high RPM horsepower. They were just ignorant unfortunately.

That’s ok, the owner and I talked about it and we both guessed about 550hp, then a few months after this video he dynoed it and it made 550 exactly 😂 pretty good guess.
This car is awesome but I love how he was playing up the adjustable suspension. Hell, my 89 Ford Probe GT came with three-way adjustable electronic suspension from the factory lol. It wasn't that rare

Not a slight on the car but it is sleeper as most vettes from the Era are dogs.

He sold his black Callaway that was a real deal true callway and got another one that was in bad shape and swapped everything off that to another clean ZR1. Then reeves Callaway signed it off as being a real Callaway and gave him all the paper work to authenticate it.

The Callaway c4 and the c6 ZR1 are the 2 vettes that I love.
@shaneomatic9188 c5 may be most reliable and bodystyle is best in my opinion and the corvette museum in Kentucky 750k miles on it..I own a c5 had pthers this is my favorite 😍

Callaway bumpers are a downgrade IMO.
Everyone has their opinion, i personally think it’s beautiful.
@@shaneomatic9188 I mean its a clean car and all, but the front end markers look way too big and the melted together tail lights are nowhere near as cool as the separate recessed style. Stock is better in some cases, but people automatically associate unique or rare with cool.
