I bought my Dana 44 IRS from Mirrock earlier this year. Great buying experience from a very knowledgeable gentleman. I’ll be coming back for front suspension hopefully sooner rather than later.
Thanks for doing this video. I'm using 84-87 C4 suspension on a '56 Chevy 3100 pickup. I learned a lot about identifying exactly what I have with the suspension components I purchased, and can't wait to weld in the front crossmember and experience the greatly improved handling and braking.
Unbelievably clear and informative! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video for us! It helps me understand the suspension on my ZR1 project car in awesome detail :)
I am in the planning stages of a project and your video has been very helpful and informative. I would like to use a C4 front and rear in my project, but have been getting some conflicting information hopefully you can straighten out for me. In your video, you say the front of an 84-87 is 59.5” and 88-96 is 61.5”. You don’t say the dimensions for the rear. Another reputable website (Flat Out Engineering) says that an 84-87 is 59.5” but 88-96 is 60.5” They also say the rear of an 84-87 is 61 1/2” and 88-96 is 62 1/2” You both have the same dimension for the 84-87 front but you show wider on the 88-96 front 61 1/2" vs flat out saying 60 1/2" I have always been told the difference between the front and rears between 84-87 and 88-96 was 1” wider, but you are showing 2” on the front vs flat out engineering showing 1” on the front. Just trying to get the right info before possibly buying anything. Could you possibly list a chart with all the dimensions? Thank You for your help
If you're interested in buying a Corvette and upgrading from the spring to coilovers look to get the 89 -96. There are aftermarket products available. The 84-88 lack the space for the coil on the upper mount and as far as I know there hasn't been anything designed for them aftermarket. If you are using the suspension on other vehicles, the customization allows for coilovers on either.
In the video you said the suspension is 59 1/2 on early and 611/2 on later model but I always thought the front suspension is 59 1/2 on early 60 1/2 on later and for the rear 60 1/2 early and 61 /12 for later . you also mention that, the extension of the rear was done replacing the knuckle. The knuckle are dffrentt due to the abs and the diameter of the stub shaft, that's true.My understanding is that it was done using a longer stub shaft in the knuckle and a thicker brake caliper bracket.
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME INFORMATION. I have a 1996 Limited Edition front and rear suspension for my 1955 Chevy Truck. Do you know if the Dana 36 will handle a 2017 LT1 HP? 455HP ?
Hello, I love your channel, I wanted to ask you if you know why my C4 and many others have the right rear wheel protruding more than the left, everything checked and in order, I read that they were assembled poorly at the factory
I have a 1986 Corvette bought a 1985 for the Dana 44.putting 373 gears in it..they all are the same strength.sometimes whoever installs gears might have to shave a little inside the differential to install the 373 gears but the difference from a 1985 to 1996 are the same Dana 44.i plan on changing the half shafts to a newer Corvette slightly thicker.but if anything most likely with big horsepower the prob would be the half shafts.im running 600 HP on a 383 stroker motor
..when changing to a coil over setup from the leaf spring.....you're now asking the upper shock mount bracket to support the weight of the car..does that have to be reinforced somehow? just wondering. I currently have a saturn sky redline but if i ever find a 96 grand sport with mileage that's at a reasonable price i may have to get one.😍😍
Definitely switch to coilovers if you're just driving the car or doing any kind of performance work or driving it is a night and day difference I got my set from DRM Corvette Central or Vansteel Corvettes
Of course you can you just have to fabricate the suspension to that frame definitely a lot of work but worth it in the long run especially if you're going to drive the thing!
I need some help. I have an '84. I'm building a motor for it. Pretty much I want to run an 85 style motor in my 84. What are the wiring harness differences between 84 and 85? I'm going to try and run an 85 ecu is why I ask.
I believe those cars are a chip system with a very simple ECU if you're going to do that and you have your heart set on an 85 motor you mine has a logo with a LT1 motor or a LS motor you'll have a bigger bang for your buck especially when it comes to drivability and horsepower stainless wire and Holly might have something for you
dont bother, everything will be different. Just get any 350 with a standalone computer or even a carb. Corvette engine are very good and optimized for their specific hp rating but they are very limitative for even marginal improvements.
An absolute WEALTH of great information visually represented. Awesome!
This is immensely helpful to the right people. Thanks a bunch.
Thanks for taking the time. I run early 84 /85 with coil overs front and rear on my 63 Grand Sport.
Where did you buy the coil overs from?
Excellent overview. I currently have 96' LT4/6sp and had a 88'/auto before. Thanks😊

Thank you for a great video with a massive amount of data. Helped me identify my 1985 front suspension

WOW you always impress me with your detailed knowledge! I thought my 84's front sway bar was damaged!

Thanks Mark. The good thing is I can always rewind. Sounds like you were ready to get that off your chest.
Love this breakdown! Thanks
IN! DEPTH! Great job on the video! Very informative.
This is such a important video for UA-cam. Thank you!
GREAT VIDEO!! Thanks for all this info.
Would be awesome for a comparison on c5 and c6, but guess thats not yalls speciality.
Great video thanks
What a great video. Thank you!

there are aftermarket coilovers for the earlier ones but just not as common
Nice Job ,, you the Man ,, what's in your Shop are you doing Collision repairs ,? Thanks for Sharing , really interesting 👍
@@tillross4078 I just have a few C4 Corvettes and looking to do some upgrades, so I've spent time seeing what's on the market.
Well done! You always make extremely informative videos. Please keep 'em coming!
Thanks
Thanks for the help your video was passed to me from a truck guy parting out a c4 cause he wasnted just the suspension for his chevy pickup
Thanks for covering this information!
Awesome video, Mark!
Great video! Thanks for the explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Great Video, learned a lot. Greetings from Germany. Oliver!
Have 3 full sets one is a Dana 44 thks for the video
As always, amazing videos!
If you're adapting these to other vehicles, look up Flat Out Engineering in Orange, CA.
That is a lot of info to take in. Great info.
Great video. would love to see a video on c5 verse c6 rear suspensions.
Excellent information!!
88 is slightly different than both the 89 and 87. When ordering suspension parts for an 88, you can only use 88 parts for it.
My parents always have had vettes. My favorite was definitely my moms 93 zr1 that car was a ripper.
Must be nice man my mom had a 92’ Pontiac Trans Sport Minivan

Do you know if the Dana 36 will handle a 2017 LT1 HP? 455HP ?
Yes. It isn't the horsepower that breaks things, it's the torque, and it'll be made worse by sticky tyres.
Thank YOU!!!!
Aw man i caught you saying "youns". You must be from East Tennessee or somewhere close to it. That's the only places I've ever heard it.
Do the knuckles have different lengths from BJ centerline to hub mounting surface?
Anyone know if it is a direct swap out from 84-87 to 88-96 suspension ?
Wanted to know what years c4 corcettes had the thickest halfshafts? I know at one point the zr1 had steel half shafts
TY!
Hello, I love your channel, I wanted to ask you if you know why my C4 and many others have the right rear wheel protruding more than the left, everything checked and in order, I read that they were assembled poorly at the factory
Make C5 lowering set up please 😊
Is the rear suspension the same from the ZR-1 to base corvette of the same years ?
I bought a dana 44 from a 1985 corvette with 307 or 308 gears.can i put 373 gears in it and are the older dana 44 weaker than the 1988 to 1996?
Yes you can .I'm doing the same thing right now

Can you tell me if i can put later c4 front calipers/ rotors on a 86 is there an adapter bracket?
this guy is the 1st son of Mr, Corvette himself
I have a 94 vette if I swap the complete rear axle and everything out to an 86 will my stock wheels and tires work or will I need spacers?
Spacers

Also switch to polyurethane bushings make a big deal also vet disc brake products carry stuff like that too
Would this front and rear work for a 1985 C-10 2wd truck?
Of course you can you just have to fabricate the suspension to that frame definitely a lot of work but worth it in the long run especially if you're going to drive the thing!

Where can I get the ABS lines and speed sensors, my 87 lines on my vette has dry rotted.
Try Corvette Central
Try VBP they have all kinds of Corvette Break Stuff
