I Had a kid next door to me when I was a kid, who had this problem.
He could walk at the time, with difficulty, and I took him on a county walk.
We ended up doing several miles, the longest, and as I found out later, the most memorable walk of his life.
He ended up in hospital, where he eventually died, while I was overseas with the RAF, but my other neighbours told me that when they visited him, all he ever talked about was the walk I took him on.
At least I gave him something worthwhile to remember.

This brings back some extremely old and very good memories indeed. I was the young boy who played Joey's brother Peter. I was only six years old at the time, but can still clearly remember it, and many other parts I played in various films and television programs. All my acting roles came about from Attending 'Anna Scher's Children's Theatre' in North London. Which was the drama school that launched many successful acting careers such as Pauline Quirk and Linda Robson, Martin Kemp and many others.
    Great times indeed!!!!

Marvellous to hear from you. What an experience! Anna Scher's was legendary.
(I knew Mark Wing-Davey, playing the father in the clip. A bit later he was the original Zaphod Beeblebrox in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' - with two heads and three arms! A lovely fella. I trust he was nice to you too? I also met his real-life mother, actress Anna Wing, who was memorable in the 1980s as Lou Beale in Eastenders.)

Hi Peter. You played the part very well and helped to bring to us kids a massive eye opener into disability and the way people were locked away in institutions and forgotten 🙌👏. Thanks.

Joey! How that word was used so badly in the 70’s at school after watching this! So sad really, I’d love to see this again.

Thank you so much for this upload - I too would love to see the whole programme again. Everything about it was brilliant, from Elaine Morgan's writing to the actors' performances to the direction, everything. I think it was the most moving film I ever saw; everyone should be able to see it, what a great great pity it's not easily available. Debra Rojas helpfully suggests PBS Nova - anyone have the tech-kno to upload it from them?

Sadly 6this is the only clip I've got. I recorded it in 1981 on the end of a VHS tape, as I'd previously worked with Mark Wing-Davey on Hitchhiker's Guide the previous year.

Tony Robinson plays Joey's best friend, Ernie. His teacher is played by Jan Davies (Pike's mum in Dads Army), and Dexter Fletcher is the annoying kid in class.

I want to watch the whole documentary - does anyone know where or how I can do that?

Unless the BBC one day chooses to repeat it, or maybe someone has a VHS off-air copy, no, sorry. I only had this clip on the end of an old VHS, because I was interested in Mark Wing-Davey, who also played Zaphod in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I remember watching this as a kid in California. My memory is that it was shown on PBS on Nova.

Would love to see that again, Tony Robinson was in as I recall.
Had no idea his dad was played by Mark Wing Davey.

It was his Grandmother and she was actually feeling his stomach and referring to him being well fed, although I have to agree, it does look a little different in the actual film.

Did the lead actor have CP or is this an example of what might be called the equivalent of Blackface these days?

The actors that played Joey, both in his childhood and as an adult, were both disabled. I can't say if it was Cerebal Palsy that they suffered from. But I can remember that they were disabled.
Even though I was just six years old at the time, it was a real honour and privilege for me to play the part of Joey's brother Peter and to meet Joey Deacon himself.
