In 1994 I did some renovation work on his piano in his house in Virginia Water. I returned his piano action and he took a little time to answer the door, there was a car backfiring and when he opened the door i said; "For God's sake let me in, there's some maniac shooting people out here" He laughed and some while later I asked him what he was working on next? He replied; "Well I've had this idea for a sketch where a piano tuner gets assassinated on someone's doorstep!" That's the sort of guy he is, as funny offstage as on it. I also remember him saying while I was there that he didn't really socialise that much with other celebrities in the profession, preferring to spend his free time with his family. So i'd say your video was spot on!
Age is a cruel misstress , I grew up laughing at his shows & now I'm in my mid 50s . His shows like the greats two Ronnies , Morcombe & Wise still have plenty of legs for new viewers of a different generation . What a Legend ! A

As a family we saw him live in the early 1980s with Bella Emberg. Just before he broke into TV. They were spontaneous, adlibbing with well known characters, and outright hysterical. No swearing or a bad word against anybody.

It has always struck me just how quickly he vanished from the television, while other celebs of his calibre seemed to carry on for decades.
The guy was absolutely hysterical. No politics, no "art", he was just about making you laugh by any means necessary, and as ridiculous as his schtick sometimes was, you would have to have been made out of solid granite not to laugh. You seriously would.
Once saw Russ Abbot live on stage with Bella Emberg and it was the funniest show ever, no smut, no four letter words just happiness, sincerity, and laughter from beginning to end.
I first saw him live with the Black Abbots in the late 1960's at a theatre club and shortly afterwards when he did a solo performance at a local restaurant that had a live band. He arrived after his show performance playing to a small audience for free. It was clear that he was a comic genius and he had a great career on TV. It is TV's loss because he has funny bones like several other great British Comedians like Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, Les Dawson and Freddie Star to name a few. Sadly the modern generation is not allowed to laugh at life for fear of offending some people. My wife and I saw him as we crossed the road in the West End one afternoon and he saw us turn towards him. He smiled and waved appreciating that we recognised him. So natural. IHopefully he is happy away from the limelight. He brought so much joy to his audiences and fans.
My sister worked in a bar in Blackpool that was frequented by many stars from showbiz. My sister said ,he was always a gentleman very polite , he never chased after woman as he was happliy married, just a really nice guy with no airs or graces who treat everyone really nicely , i loved his show
I’m friends with his son. I can tell you he’s done the right thing and unlike others he retired at the top of his game. He’s in good health and enjoying family life and holidays. His legacy is assured.
Nice one John...I'm Russ Abbots nephew and it amazes me what people assume because Russ isn't in the limelight anymore....that's because he doesn't need to be and as you say @johnnydiamondsmusic1673 he's retired at the top and living a lovely retirement in Portugal & Barbados. Nice one uncle Russ 😄

Saturday evening viewing was great, Russ Abbot was one of my favourite performers in my younger years. He will always have a high esteem and respect from me. I'm glad he is enjoying his retirement in Portugal he deserves it. Total Respect 😊

Saw him at a funeral reception at Wentworth Golf Club for a friend some years ago as I first met him at the bar in a Great Yarmouth hotel way back in 1979 and we joked about the place, he seemed in good humour then. Used to enjoy his shows but now BBC TV comedy aimed at nobody!!
One of my all time favourite TV characters. His humour was hilarious, clean, family-friendly, appealing to all ages and non-satirical. The BBC have done us all a disservice by aiming at the lowest common denominator in comedy, intellectual content and production standards. Much of their programming is no longer acceptable to large numbers of viewers. Back in the sixties, I remember being at the Top Rank club in Chester when I first saw the Black Abbotts perform and when Russ was in the middle of an elongated drum solo, I bought him a pint and held for him whilst he drank it still drumming!!! The crowd loved it a gave him an amazing cheer. I've often wondered if Russ would remember this, it was a night to remember!! The inventive genius in Russ was even present then I think....
Russ was great in the great BBC days. Unfortunately the BBC has now changed, and not for the better. If you think how much Lineaker gets , how much would Russ get. The nicest thing is Russ goes into my hall of fame as a great allrounder.
Brilliant all round performer, very good with Les Dennis. As for Summer Wine, it ran its course, I think it finished at the right time. Enjoy your retirement Russ. ⭐
I saw Russ in THE BLACK ABBOTS live on stage at The Garrick Theatre Club in the Lancashire town of Leigh and he was really very funny indeed. Glad to see he is still enjoying life as he worked damn hard and earned it. JOHN
Saw him with the Black Abbots at Wakefield Theatre Club around 1968. The Black Abbots were playing on stage and the audience were shouting for Russ, when all of a sudden he came flying from the back of the stage and over the audience on a long rope! It was a hilarious show.
My happiest moments of Russ Abbot was working as part of the madhouse for many years as an actor at the BBC and touring with Russ. Oh yes and playing many rounds of golf. Certainly the happiest days of my professional sixty year showbiz life. Take this item with a vary large pinch of salt, Russ is healthy and living happily with his lovely family. Absolute genius. Not just as a comedian, but as a straight actor: his drama series 'September Song', where in a beautiful role-reversal, he played a Shakespearian actor and Michael Williams played a cabaret nightclub entertainer, was astounding.
Russ had 4 good friends who he worked with on his Madhouse show. Dustin Gee, from York who worked as part of a comedy double act with good friend Les Dennis. Dustin Gee, sadly died of cancer many years ago. Bella Emberg, big rounded woman who was part of Abbot's shows was always full of fun and very enthusiastic. Bella sadly died in more recent years. His comments were that Russ was regularly rude & generally obnoxious with the crews, treated them like dirt, so he ended up with the worst crews which made matters worse! In the end, he was progressively sidelined, and no-one mourned his departure.
Whenever I see Russ Abbot, I think he looks so much like Tommy Cooper - I think his impression of Tommy Copper would be definitive. I believe he did do Tommy, sometimes.

I wondered why " Last of the Summer Wine " was discontinued , it seemed like the kind of show that could go on forever by introducing new characters . Just one more example of the BBC ignoring what viewers actually want to see , good wholesome funny comedy , replaced by what fits in with the BBC'S new ideological agenda . I would rather watch a thirty year old Russ Abbott show than the absolute garbage the BBC puts on nowadays , especially the new Dr Who drivel .
I wondered why Last of the Summer Wine was being dragged on so long. I thought it was out of respect for Bill Owen. When Owen died, I thought that it would be laid to rest with him. Sadly, they tried to keep it on even longer, until boredom and contempt ruined its memory.
@@tooleyheadbang4239 Cheers for that , but don't you think if the show continued with new actors brought in , they would have new personalities which could keep the show fresh .
I think it was long past freshness by the time Compo made his last bow. There comes a time when the party's over. It's sad, but I like to go just before that time. @@namesake-mx9nl
When I used to live in the Uk I used to whatch him regularly. When I moved back home my children used to get video tapes my in laws recorded for them. My son's favourites were Basildon Bond and the scottish character. I liked them all including the lady Wonder Woman, I cannot remember her name. Although I still have the tapes I"ve nowhere to watch them.😢
I worked with him on an episode of his tv show. Nice, very quiet man. Wicked sense of humour though. Loved his show, and later when he was on last of summer wine.
I knew someone that knew him , and Freddie Starr , one day when young they both went into to restaurant , got on tables , and dropped their trousers. Had the place in stitches , that's the story I heard from entertainer in those long lost old days , comedy is toilet humour two masters , in London restaurant , what a team , lol
I'd like to thank Russ and all his Madhouse crowd for giving me the best times during the 80's. As his sound guy during the 80's at North Pier Theatre Blackpool, I found him and all the rest nothing but courteous and always as professional off stage - Thanks Russ - enjoy your well deserved retirement.
I used to love his slapstick sketches - especially Pavarotti. Good to hear that he’s still knocking around even if he’s keeping a lower profile these days….
The pirate sketch where the water hit him in the face at the wrong angle for a wave was left in because it was hilarious, best laugh I had of his watching that one
While being married to my beautiful Swiss wife for only a few months she asked me to tune her piano and gave a me a tuning fork. When I had finished it was ready for les Dawson and far worse than when I had started. Unfortunately it led to a divorce and me leaving Switzerland for my hometown in the UK. I hope one day to return to Switzerland but this time I know how to tune a piano correctly. While working at JCB in Rocester England all of us were entertained by Russ. A very funny man. Im sure he could see the funny side of my story!!!!
I remember seeing the Black Abbots many times at the Top Hat club in Spennymoor. Russ was the drummer but would leave his drum set and do comedy skits in between songs, maybe thats where it all started.

I agree 100per cent.
The scout leader dib dib dib dob dob dob genius. A true gentleman of comedy 🎭
Shuffling the Pack 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Obviously, I’m dealing😂 with your reply, as I hold the Trump card🫣😂, and I am saying this with a poker 🤪face. Deal or No deal.I think I will PACK 🤭in now.
My favorite was with Bella singing , I Got You Babe .
Thank you for all the many years of laughs !!
Really nice guy great comedian I have met him personally on several occasions and he has time for everyone
Old school entertainment was the best.
The Black Abbots didn't disband in 1980 - I saw them play live in Rhyl in 1983, though Russ had left them a few years earlier.
Brings back great memories, simple comedy ,great laugh
The snooker sketch with all the fart jokes - another masterpiece which still cracks me up every time…
When I used to live in the Uk I used to whatch him regularly. When I moved back home my children used to get video tapes my in laws recorded for them. My son's favourites were Basildon Bond and the scottish character. I liked them all including the lady Wonder Woman, I cannot remember her name. Although I still have the tapes I"ve nowhere to watch them.😢
She was called Bella Emberg
Aaah... Blunder woman
I worked with him on an episode of his tv show. Nice, very quiet man.
Wicked sense of humour though.
Loved his show, and later when he was on last of summer wine.
He was a Great entertainer...One of the best 😁😁😁.
He appeared in several episodes of LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
An absolute Legend along with Freddie ❤
I knew someone that knew him , and Freddie Starr , one day when young they both went into to restaurant , got on tables , and dropped their trousers. Had the place in stitches , that's the story I heard from entertainer in those long lost old days , comedy is toilet humour two masters , in London restaurant , what a team , lol
Signature beret? Thought that was Frank Spencer aka Michael Crawford.
Atmosphere for bopping in the 80's but 2 songs he did on his early 80's show still crack me up to this day... Mother In Law and Smelly Feet LOL...
We went on a trip with the cuba to see Russ on North Pier.
I used to love his slapstick sketches - especially Pavarotti.
Good to hear that he’s still knocking around even if he’s keeping a lower profile these days….
Russ Abbott was a genius and will never be forgotten
The pirate sketch where the water hit him in the face at the wrong angle for a wave was left in because it was hilarious, best laugh I had of his watching that one
Didn't know he was still with us
You’re thinking of Rod Hull . . . or Roy Hudd.
@@adaptandsucceed6875 No. I used to watch him on TV when I was in school and thought he was the funniest guy.
@@mikeconnors3880Same here ,I'd forgotten all about him ,great days 🤠🇬🇧
While being married to my beautiful Swiss wife for only a few months she asked me to tune her piano and gave a me a tuning fork. When I had finished it was ready for les Dawson and far worse than when I had started. Unfortunately it led to a divorce and me leaving Switzerland for my hometown in the UK. I hope one day to return to Switzerland but this time I know how to tune a piano correctly. While working at JCB in Rocester England all of us were entertained by Russ. A very funny man. Im sure he could see the funny side of my story!!!!
Last time I saw Russ was on the set in port Talbot, he was filming at my friends mother horse ranch.
Cooperman and Blunderwoman sketches for me.
Saw him with his Band " The Black Abbots" on The Pier Blackpool 1976
I remember seeing the Black Abbots many times at the Top Hat club in Spennymoor. Russ was the drummer but would leave his drum set and do comedy skits in between songs, maybe thats where it all started.
Saw him down the Barras , friendly guy with a genuine smile
This guy was awesome 👌
I met him as a kid in cardiff new theatre. I never seen such hairy arms before. He was so nice and loved his show growing up. He would make a good judge on BGT.
