The axle just had extra heat treating!
I'm quickly realizing that you have to be a walking Encyclopedia Brittanica of 4-Wheel Drive Component knowledge to hot-rod together ANY off-road vehicle - - and it's the main reason why my '93 ZJ is still bone-stock after owning it for 2 years now.
Yesum he surly is. Good day ya'll 🇺🇸
I'm the same, I'd love to see the lads do a bolt on build for those of us that are all thumbs ha ha
its only nuts & bolts..learn to weld & grind.. we have utub now. easy.. how hard is it for me,,im in aus...with 4 u.s. 4x4rs.. nothing but toyotas & nissans here..
Internet forums. I highly recomend irate or pirate. Look through threads of guys doing buildups. You will learn a lot. It slows the builds down, with pictures, and the ability to really get into the details. In today's day an age, a lack of information should not hold you back from doing anything.
And bone stock ZJ stock will hang with alot of built off-road vehicles! ZJs are the unicorn of Jeeps!
Bleepin awesome 😎! Voting is our ticket to seeing what your talents do for this beautiful S10. Eyechrometer!
Colt u are KING of dad jokes😂😂😂
Great video and this reminds me of me and my step dad salvaged a set of axle from a burned down Peter built it took all day and God bless from GA and stay safe
Those axles and gears are better than factory parts, they have been heat treated...🤠
More like annealed (i.e. weaker)
Dude just heaving 200+ pounds of dana 60 housing around. 💪💪💪
Thanks for the great video 👍, always good details and information
Can't wait to see the hole s10 build and see what you guys are going to do with it. Hope bleeping Colt and bleeping Matt win the onX off road challenge
Thanks we do too, you can vote every 12 hrs!
@@bleepinjeep you nuse set up bearings.?. i kow its a waste , but less wear on shaft.if shims under bearing.
@@bleepinjeep iiiifff,,you use old bearings,,isnt there a 1,2,3, th wear, which you need to take off the new number.. say 10th shim = 7th shim.final.ish.
@@bleepinjeep 14 bolt, yeeehh,,,arb locker,,bin.. buy detroit..
@@bleepinjeep Milwaukee m12 palm nailer works great as a hammer. I use mine with regular air hammer bits.
Damn, makes me wish I could come up there & hang out for a day or 2 just to learn how to do this stuff lol. Great job buddy.
Right! I even have a s10 I’d “let” them put axles in! 😙🙏❤️😎🤙🛻💨
@@sheepwolf1st , ya never know for sure til ya ask? 🙏❤️
I use oven cleaner to clean everything! Works way better that anything else. Dawn liquid dish soap works wonders too!
Instead of a die grinder, better to hone the bearings out. Just makes it a lot more true all the way around. If you don't own one, a machine shop can use the one they use on rod ends and make short work of it.
Colt you make this very interesting. I spent 3 yrs. in Germany, never heard the word used for constipation, (FarFromPoopin) showed my wife and she laughed. We need to get people to vote daily for Bleeping Jeep on you build, (keep telling the to Vote) and get you all back in the lead. I had a 1987 Chevy S10 4x4 when I was at Fort Carson Co. So I am Voting daily for you to win. Good luck hope you both win the build challenge.
Thanks David and thank you for your service👍
Nice heat treated axle housing
I didbthe free week to vote for you guys and didn't realize you could vote once a day until it was too late 😅. Glad to see you guys got the sponsorship.
As a calibration technician, thank you for making the statement about backing off the torque!!! 🎉 leaving them at a torque setting especially in a higher setting for an extended period of time will definitely impact the performance of the tool. Thank you for the awareness!
Pro tip. Order two install kits and make a set of setup bearings. It made my gear swap SO much easier. It’s also an investment if you foresee yourself doing another of the same axle or helping a buddy out.
plus,,the bearing measurement, is the same, worn bearings can be 3th different.
Did this last week when regearing and it was a huge time saver get all the shim measurements right!! However I used my old bearings.
@@rocklanderoffroad that can be close. If the brand changes, the old bearings are smoked, or you can’t get them off without breaking them it’s an issue.
@@mcgratheh5592 who are you talking to about pressure washers?
@@MissionRestomod sorry man, that was for bleepinjeep. Lol
Hiya Colt, GREAT how to video on a fire axle refurb.
Go to your nearest dollar store and buy oven cleaner and use that to eat the grease away and just pressure wash it off, it works really good to clean diffs and engines.
Nice tutorial Colt 👍👍
If that ring gear is covered with Mescaline instead of cosmoline I would be surprised.😜
I thought I heard him right when he said mescaline instead of cosmoline. Takes me back to the 60s hallucinations.
Colt, FYI, Harbor Freight sells a replacement jack for that engine hoist.
That's a bleepin awesome tutorial! Thanks Colt!
Excellent Vid. Wish I would have seen this before I did my first axle but I struggled thru it and got it done. Thanks from Utah!
I am on Team BleepinJeep. Much more hurdles to overcome with that S-10.
Wish I had a Dana 60 to rebuild... nice video.
Colt, thanks for doing this video. I have a BJ D60 that I been starring at because I really didn't know what goes where. It's just new bearings and seals, but watching this has really helped me understand all the slingers and shims. Thanks
That was the exact purpose of this video. Glad you enjoyed it Matthew!
I see that you have a dog bone creeper! I bought one almost 20 years ago and I love it!
My favorite creeper for sure
Great video Colt. I hope I spelled it right. I haven’t done an axle yet. I appreciate all the videos I can get. Thanks!
great job Colt.
Tip for removing kingpin cones. Cut a hole in a piece of scrap sheet metal so it fits around the base of the cone. Weld sheet metal to cone. Let cool naturally or cool with water. Hit sheet metal with hammer and cone should spin off fairly easy.
Haven't seen that before😎
@@bleepinjeep another fail safe method is take a cut off wheel and make a moderately deep cut all the way around the base of the king pin; this relieves the surface tension to the top of the inner C 👌
I've been waiting for more videos of the S10 I have a 91 S10 regular cad long bed I'm building into a crawler
I always pack the seal garter spring with grease to keep it from popping out when the seal is driven in.
your looking much healthier nowadays buddy good job! And gr8 job on the instructional video :)
Thats gonna be a beast. Its light and narrow. It will get through anything and be bulletproof !!
Nice! You got the 14 bolt I had been looking at. Haha I actually worked with you for a hitch, when I first started at LEAM as MWD and you made your first off road video.
Awesome explanations about setting up gears! I've done quite a few regears and love to watch others process cause I always learn something new!
That tire torque wrench you don't have to back off when your done with it.
Awesome video, Colt
When you put that torch on that differential housing I bet it was like “are we on fire again?.
Another trick to pushing the carrier out of the housing is simply turn the pinion, the hypoid gears force the ring gear away/ out(in one direction, pulls in the other). That trough on the bottom of the case in the pinion bearing area is the oil return passage and yup like you said, it's a crap catcher, the ring gear throws the oil (AND CRAP!)into the top passage to supply the pinion lubrication. I also measure my set up bearing thicknesses to compare against the new bearings. You never know how close a new bearing is to the old or a different brand and as you know, that is fixed with shims, so knowing ahead of time can save time and grey hair. I like your thinning of the gear paint trick, going to use that! Great video.........
Y’all are going to be kick the competition’s asses no doubt about it.
I like how Colt just casually picks up the axle housing and chucks it in the bed. That thing weighs as much as I do!!
This is a super nice video! Nice to see the build of the aksel and how you do it :)
I was making that exact same face when Ernest showed up! Great video!!
😎👍
Great video!
Fluid Film is fantastic
I really enjoyed this video in my opinion you definitely made some good deals. I am looking forward to the next video to see what all you have planned for the S10
Love it!! Thanks for all the detail! Gives me confidence to rebuild my super 60.
The best spray lube I've ever used is transmission fluid and acetone, 50/50. Put it in a metal spray bottle and shake it vigorously, then spray the stuck bolts.
Man I can't wait to see that s-10 finished! Nice video Colt!
Thank you
This was fantastic! Almost gives me the confidence to try unless of course you want to swing by and give me a hand?
Very informative. I just have to get some grease time doing this kind of work to really make the knowledge stick in my head. Keep doing this type of videos. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome stuff Colt. Thanks man.
Spectacular episode
Great show. You get a lot done in that little garage.
I like your instructions on axles, 👍very informative for me😊
Your German "Dad" jokes had me crying I was laughing so hard, why is that so funny?! Loving the build, you guys and your mechanical smarts is just nuts!
Excellent video with a ton of great explanations! So many videos skip over reasons and what to watch for stuff, each of your videos has great detail(s). I’m looking forward to more!
Wow. I’ve seen you do this with hillbillies truck and with this project. I have three jeeps a blazer and an explorer. I’m a gear head guy but if I ever have to rebuild my differential and axels I’m going to bring it to Colt at Bleeping Jeep. 😂. Thank you 😊
Great tips and tricks 👍
Good shop practice..on the torque wrenches ...Don't leave the spring twist one loaded...good reminder also do a pretest on it like 5 to 6 times on a know test fixture to see if it in range never know who dropped it during shipping or chines manufacturing..Peace....thks for sharing...
Great suggestion about the diff covers! Thanks! :-)
This video is gold
I see a lot of people use different things for cleaner. We always use a little diesel fuel and an old rag. It's cheap and easy.
Did this swap a few years ago with kingpin d60 with 37s on a first gen 2 door blazer. It was beast
I've been saying the same thing about the air hammer! The only battery equivalent is the SDS rotary hammer but I think it lacks the punch of the air hammer.
I made a home built hammer using a part of a sawsall blade and welded it to a small solid pipe that I use as my "air hammer"
I don't know enough about the alloys used to make axle tubes and knuckles, but when the heat gets hot enough to kill a spring it makes me mighty nervous for the strength of the rest of the steel. I'll be very interested to watch how that turns out.
The heat would ruin any heat treat by annealing everything. Thats bad for spring steel, gears, and bearings because they are treated, but the rest should be untreated. So as far as i know hes replacing everything that would care.
I could be wrong, but thats my understanding of how it works
@brokewrench4073 you are correct. The oly thing I might he worried about if if the axle tubes are warped but a quick check with a straight edge will tell you that. And unless the axle was quickly cooled are all that heat I doubt it would be.
Hell yes I been waiting!!!!
I have a half-inch air tool also for removing crankshaft bolts but have also replaced my 3/8 hose with a 1/2-inch inside diameter hose and larger fittings. I only use a 60-gallon air compressor but those 800Ftlbs torque bolts are on the floor before you can take your finger off the trigger. That big heavy air hose isn't convenient for dragging around the shop but it makes quick work of the heavy stuff. Air pressure and air volume gets it done,
I bought 1985 Dana 60's for my 78 bronco with 4.10 gears, and lockers. Swapping my Dana 44's, and 9" for them. They are chromoly axles, 31 spline 44's, 35 spline 9", power locker in the 44, detroit locker 9", 5.13 gears, and 39.5×15×15 tsl super swampers. Didn't break those. Hope the 4.10's, and axles are better.
A literal fire sale.
Awesome video Colt! I really do think your build will be the best and I’m not just saying that. I wish all 3 of you could bring your vehicles though, would be awesome to see them wheel together.
Hope you got oil based pay rate for that diff cleaning haha. Nice video bro great detail🤙
That engine hoist just needs new "O" rings......
A lot cheaper than replacing the whole hoist !
🤔
Love it. You guys are inspiration f9r me and a buddy to build a volvo powered xj. Use what you got/budget...
Thanks Travis, that Volvo XJ sounds cool!
@@bleepinjeep we found a worn trail map for wind rock park, in the glove box (this was someone's old trail rig without an engine). So, our goal is to get it there by next summer. We'll be recording the whole ordeal and posting on youtube. maybe get to meet you guys on the trail.
Sick video
Great video, Colt
We can tell you've done this once or twice before... 😉😄😄
Do a video on the 14 bolt anyways. Even if everything's good with it, we'll surely learn something new about it!!!🤙
Colt looks like he's losing weight. Good job bro. I know the struggle. Keep it up.
I have a cam bearing install tool that i use for the axle shaft seals. Works fantastic and very easy to get the seals in straight. Havent tried it on a d60 yet
I don’t know of any good battery air hammers, but as far air hammers go… get Astro Tools Big Nasty. It has much more punch with the bigger shank size. And it’s fun to say in the shop when it’s time to get serious. And get ear protection before you use it.
I'm jealous of the snowfighter. Fire destroyed. Fire will rebuild....
I love these videos, you do an excellent job of explaining the process without it being dull and boring yet informative and inspiring. You been hittin the weights bro?
Это великий труд! Ваш трут не оценим! Ювелирная работа! Планитарка похоже на летающую тарелку!)) Вы молодец!
Don't ditch the engine hoist. It's probably better metal then they are today. Just go back to harbor freight and get the air over hydraulic cylinder replacement. And keep rocking it.
Good show
Same here !! I have a Mac Tool air hammer I’ve ran buck rivets installing panels in semi trailers for years now but I’d love to try a electric one also I run Dewalt Because they have the same batteries!!! As MAC TOOLS
i love how everything you do is teaching us
To me it would be nicer to split this content into a few 10-20 min videos rather than such a long one. Thanks amyways for everything you upload
Wsting you guys work on this build reminds me of the guys i got to hang out with in VA who built jeeps. One guy used someoff the wall old school medium duty GMC truck axle for his and i wish i could remember what it was.
I've always wondered about using burned components
If you mix ATF and acetone it becomes absolutely beyond doubt the best “free-all” in the world. Manufacturing had a problem in the past with selling ATF, it leaks out of any packaging.
Quick, lite a candle. lol.
Hey Vern...uuuuuu that Stinks!!!
WOW!
Had to pause at 17:50 to make sure I heard that blooper right! Cosmoline - petroleum based metal protectant. Mescaline -- may impair axle building for up to several hours.
i wish there was a battery hammer lol the air hammer is the one air tool that cant be beat lol
Grate build
I want to watch a build series on the truck. You and Hollie both created videos on how to regear Dana 60s.
