It is totally understandable Paul - As a professional who has worked his entire life, we often get defined by what we do and what we achieve and its hard to just stop. I am at a point where I could retire (financially) but I need to mentally prepare myself for the transition but I have so many hobbies and things to keep me busy that I doubt I will miss work. The only thing I dislike is our cold and snowy winters so I may escape for 3 months of the year to get away from the harshness so who knows, I may end up in the Philippines or another country to take a break from the winter - That is what hits me the hardest, the cold and short daylight hours we face. Hang in there and enjoy have your toes tickled by Mia (lol)

Retired people all over the world face the same issues. The transition can be rough. Some people just fail retirement. They aren’t able to move on and accept the fact that their job was only a means to an end. Men especially spend decades climbing the corporate ladder. It becomes more than a job…it actually starts to define who they are and why they are here.

That was a great walk, nice trees and landscape. ( I, too, worked in the oil patch for a consultant engineering firm (on the proposed 48" nat gas pipeline from Prudhoe Bay, down through Canada, to U.S. border) for 5 years 1971 to 76.) My question to you, Paul, is I think of engineering as mainly math and physics, with some application of chemistry and electrical: so would you be able to apply A.I. to your engineering challenges, or would it be 95% your own thinking to solve each project?

I have seen this article about Sweden where they created a way to turn garbage into electricity. Now they are running out of waste and have to import it. Thx Paul & Maya honest, even vulnerable content. God created you with an emptiness deep in your soul, which can only be filled with Jesus. This is indeed about not working, not being a productive contributor to society, but not engineering, rather obeying God, loving your Creator, through showing love to other people, by serving them, such as volunteer work through a local service organization or church. You're focused too much on Paul, while Living for Jesus is the only way to find fulfillment, living for yourself will keep you in a state of emptiness & eventually depression

Jumping and bouncing around wildly wondering what to do next! A word of advice. Fight doing ANYTHING that resembles what you did BEFORE you were retired! Separate from your past! What ever country you decide to retire in, whether it's in your own country, you have to figure out what to do on a daily basis before you can retire. Before retiring you must first visit that country many times to figure out a daily routine otherwise you will be bored and depressed. Some of the most depressed people in the world are retirees . Especially if you don't have a daily routine

@@tinotino9952 yeh.. it takes time to change from corporate drone to living the life you want..some are to institutionalized to realize that working for the man until one is to old to enjoy life isn't necessarily your best life..some can't really afford it and i have no idea his finances... I retired at 49 and moved to PH and i haven't looked back in the 2 years so far. But it definitely can take time to find what u want after decades of long hours and chasing the dollar... He's not been educating educating disadvantaged children, he has been working to make multi billion dollar oil companies richer...nothing wrong with that, just maybe if he gives it some time he will find a purpose or pursuit that fulfills him more, then again, maybe not? To each their own. For me retiring from my own busy law practice at 49, best decision i ever made so far. I do agree though the education for a young Filipina woman is something that will enrich her life and future in so many ways, that to not pursue education and the learning, growth and confidence building is almost always a mistake if getting the education isn't a huge burden on yourself or family.

Having something to focus on that either keeps your brain active or some social engagement is the healthy thing to do. Some may need it daily, others a few times a week. As someone who enjoys the company of dogs, I would volunteer at an animal shelter or help with rescue efforts so these companions can find a good, loving home. Writing is another activity I enjoy, but not all the time. Devote a couple days a week to just free form out my thoughts or ideas. I've always created a better idea or formulated more complete thoughts when writing on paper vs tapping away at a keyboard.

Paul you still have a good mind and you’re too young to retire in the Philippines due to lack of stimulation. I think your mental well-being would be better served if you continued working for several more years. Continuing on your current glide path will result in mental deterioration, crankiness, and a general sense of malaise. Strongly recommend you keep yourself stimulated through your engineering profession, and vacation in the Philippines twice a year. Over to you! 💪🙏

So I took on something new: forex trading. It's difficult and high risk. But there are people who succeed.
I'm profitable now after a few months trading cash. More importantly, I am excited to get up every morning and look at the charts. Best of all, I can spend just three or four hours trading or go for 8 hours if I'm seriously on a run.
I'm also adding to the future wealth of my son, so I feel incredibly gratified.

So then we moved to Cebu, Mactan Lapu Lapu Punta Engano area. Oh my what a disappoinment. Everyone described Cebu as a beautiful place! They forgot to mention the hurrible traffic, conjestion, and trash every where.
Finally moved to Masbate away from the rat race. No traffice, less people, less facilities, less stress.
Boardem, depression, difficult time adapting depends on the person. Not easy getting use to less Choices in life but can easily be adoptive in time. A person needs to be pro active to be happy.
Seems like no matter where we choose there Will always be CONs.
      Lets see!
Big places, big oppertunities, over populated , expensive, traffic, crime, more complainig.
Smaller City, simular situation. Inevidable before same problem accure.
Number #1 PRO OF the Philippines in my opinion are the people!
Pros and cons no Matter where you choose.
No matter where we choose to live in the world, your Pros must out weigh your Cons.
Think the number one most important in my opinion is for a person to have the funds, preferably a pension enough to live happy.
For US we are happier with Less people! Seems like more people means more problems. The farther away for US means less trash, and noise polution. We like our SPACE, in the Middle OF no where ON the coast, sounds OF the waves, Windy, with vegitation Cocunut, mango, and banana, and Palm tres, view OF the Ocean. Very Peaceful.
