Ask Dr. Yo: I'm not (or wasn't) anxious. Why do I have PPPD or other chronic dizziness symptoms?

  • A common misunderstanding from people new to my channel is that I'm dismissing chronic dizziness symptoms as "just anxiety." No, they ARE NOT just anxiety. The symptoms are real, and they are being perpetuated (made chronic) by nervous system dysfunction- and that is the "anxiety" connection. Watch to hear more about how anxiety plays in to symptoms, and why so many of you weren't or aren't anxious and are still dealing with chronic symptoms.

    My stress and anxiety are very physically manifested and dizziness is part of that. I wasn’t aware I was carrying so much stress until my body freaked out. The dizziness is getting better.

    So I've been dealing with this swaying sensation 24/7 (sitting, laying down, standing) at the start of the year. Had sooo many tests done and came out good except the MRI came out that I have Cervical kyphosis. Had gone to many specialists and have been told that im good.The thing is my anxiety came back. Went back with a Psychiatrist and the meds she gave me made me worse( swaying worse, anxiety worse and depression) even made me have walking problems. Feels weird when I walk. I stopped going with her and went with another Psychiatrist. I kinda regret going in the first place. My anxiety and stress have been making my swaying and balance worse than ever.

    I was tapering too fast off fludrocortisone and wound up in severe fight or flight . My blood volume and blood pressure as well as lack of aldosterone like activity in the body triggered all the alarm: tachycardia, dizziness , adrenaline dumps, diarrhea, insomnia, no appetite , fear , panic , ruminating thoughts , countless ER visits ... i immediately went back on fludrocortisone and yet all that sympathetic activity was still there . Now 1 month post all this and dizziness when standing and walking is the only symptom left.. i know the medication taper triggered the danger alarm ( i take it for POTS).. but the fact that i even have POTs in the first place comes from a place of many past traumas that i need to heal from and work through..

    Hi. I've just found your channel. My husband has been dealing with constant PPPD symptoms for over 4 years now. He's not the anxious type. But I would wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of repressed feelings possibly playing a factor. It was something I noticed about him a few years ago, and something I now wonder is a contributing factor is he has a fixed mindset. Which I learned about at work after a speech from our CEO who talked about the difference between a growth mindset vs a fixed mindset and it so accurately described my husband it was scary. He's so afraid of failing in areas that he doesn't naturally excel at he refuses to try. This is now bled over into things that trigger his vertigo to get worse. I'd really like to get him to watch more of your videos, but I'm afraid he won't. Any advice on stubborn husbands?

    It’s so funny that people with PPPD think they don’t have anxiety. It’s literally an anxiety symptom. It’s a condition of personality. Anxiety is built into our nervous systems. People pleasing. Perfectionism. Good’ism. High achieving personalities. These are all built on the foundation of anxiety/fear. And it’s not all bad! We need some level of anxiety and fear for motivation. But this is the genesis of these mind body symptoms. Any time someone says “oh I don’t have anxiety” to me that’s the surest sign they’re not in touch with why they’re having these symptoms.

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  7 місяців тому

      I think people’s responses to the idea that anxiety is involved are probably reflective of the stigma we have about mental health and how body symptoms are considered more “real” and “legitimate” than emotional distress.

    Hi Dr, I am wondering why when I am in fight or flight mode as an example before a job interview I just had I did not feel dizzy. Why is my brain not making prediction errors and causing dizziness because it is still getting danger mode signals in this situation before a job interview . But instead I will get dizzy when sitting in a lecture where I am less in fight or flight?

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  10 місяців тому

      Hi Michaela as I mentioned in a previous post, people get prediction errors all the time! Your body is VERY sensitive to danger, and that means that your "danger response system" gets activated by all sorts of sensations and activities. You may not be in fight or flight 24/7 but it gets turned on easily and does not easily turn off. This can be healed.

Thanks

    I've been out of work for nearly 2 weeks because of this. Just when I think I'm making progress, it happens again rather I'm thinking about stressful events, my past or just content in the moment. The lightheadedness and the neuropathy happens and then I automatically go into anxiety and then the last thing that goes is my heartbeat. It's scary how I wouldn't be able to stand and my body would start shaking afterwards. I don't enjoy anything anymore and it's to the point where I have Suicidal Thoughts because I think maybe they would be better off without having to take care of someone who is basically turning into a disabled person. I'm scared of being alone in my apartment by myself and then if I do have the attacks nobody is going to be there to save me. It makes me feel alone and fearful. Sometimes the breathing techniques work but sometimes they don't. I'm supposed to be taking care of my mom and dad, not the other way around. Idk how I am going to pay my bills!?! I have to avoid caffeine, sugar and wear a light sweatshirt because I get cold easily now and the coldness also triggers it. I feel so lost and doctors just say it's anxiety and chances are my neurologist probably doesn't even know what pppd is and I am seeing him because I had a seizure 2 years ago. 💔

    Hi Yonit. I have chronic allergy symptoms since April this year. In June, I experienced 2 spinning episodes of BPPV in 2 days. I now have daily dizziness since then diagnosed with PPPV as well as the allergy symptoms which don't go away. Antihistamine side effects made me more dizzy causing the room to spin. Could these allergy type symptoms be causing my daily PPPV? I've had motion sickness and short episodes of vertigo during my younger days. I am a youthful 70 year old. Can you give me advice please. Dizziness is so complex.

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  10 місяців тому

      It is complex! My first suggestion given that you've had these other possible health issues is to have a full workup from a vestibular specialist. The allergy symptoms may or may not be related. If you are in the US, dizzy.com has a directory of centers that specialize in vestibular disorders. If nothing is found, then chances are you're dealing with a neural circuit issue as described here on my channel.

    I just have a question that I don’t seem to understand and I think it would be really helpful in my recovery. I have discovered that my dizziness preceded an extreme period of panic attacks and health anxiety. So I am curious if being in fight or flight causes prediction errors, howcome when normally people are in fight or flight they don’t get prediction errors? As an example I am quite an anxious driver and I can feel my body going into fight or flight when I am driving as I get shaky and sweaty, however this is when my symptoms regarding dizziness are the best. So why is my brain not making prediction errors and causing symptoms when I am in fight or flight mode in the car for example? As well as this I would like to ask is your brain constantly in danger mode or is it just hyper sensitive to danger mode, as in it is often perceiving situations as dangerous and therefore creating symptoms? Thank you so much for all your help

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  10 місяців тому

      People get prediction errors all the time! The other day I thought I saw a cat but when I turned around it was just a shoe. The differnece is that my body is generally not in a state of alarm and cats and shoes are not dangerous as far as my brain is concerned so that was that. Your body is VERY sensitive to danger, and that means that your "danger response system" gets activated by all sorts of sensations and activities. You may not be in fight or flight 24/7 but it gets turned on easily and does not easily turn off.

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  9 місяців тому

      It is not the same as PPPD. People with PPPD do not have tissue damage (stroke) that causes symptoms. However, your brain’s ability to adapt to changes is highly influenced by stress, anxiety, etc. The techniques I talk about will set your brain up for the best possible outcome, though only your vestibular specialists can tell you what limitation there may be on your functioning.

    Dear Dr Yonit, i am wondering, when i would go to the doctor, he would say i have burnout symptoms. (diziness, anxiety, fatigue, stress, processing issues with eyes and entire system), but i hear almost all people with pppd talking about the cause is: stress or somethingblike that, but never about being burnout before or during pppd...also you never mention burnout...but it is so similar...what do you think about that?

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  10 місяців тому

      Great question! Same thing, different name in my opinion. Burnout also means dysregulation of the nervous system brought on by stress. The reason I don't use that name is because burnous is typically thought of as involving fatigue and mental fog/depression whereas many people with NCD don't have mental health symptoms.

I believe it’s related to adrenal/cortisol issues. Also, a fear of going to sleep and waking up with vertigo. Vertigo is traumatic.
    Does anyone know why my dizziness is worse when I lay down and especially when I roll into my left side? I also have to take super high levels of sodium throughout the day and night because it makes it helps tremendously, without it I wouldn’t make it through 24hrs.

      @@DarkoFitCoachI think people just don't believe there isn't something physically wrong with them even if that's what doctors are telling them, because how can I feel so miserable with there being nothing wrong? And then you read things over and over again where people said the doctors told me there was nothing wrong and then 2 weeks later I had a stroke or heart attack or whatever. So I think it's a lack of confidence that doctors haven't missed something that keeps people trapped in feeling that there must be something physically wrong. But once a person accepts that, then this stuff really begins to makes sense and healing can start happening. But I totally understand why it's hard to get to the point of accepting that.
