  • If you guys decide to do this to your own system, first please remember that the subwoofer ohm value should always be higher or equal to the amplifier/receivers ohm value.
    Connecting a lower ohm value subwoofer to a higher ohm value amplifier will not be a good idea, it might damage your amplifier.
    PS: This is a passive subwoofer.. it means this sub has no built-in amplifier.

    Since you went with a 4 ohm speaker, you should add a second one to get more power delivery. You're only using 37.5% of the power. If you add a second 4 ohm speaker, you'd go down to 2 ohms and get 75% of the original speaker's power, and you could separate them a bit for better distributed sound.

    • @TechGuyCharlie
      @TechGuyCharlie  5 років тому +7

      Well, I don't have enough space for a second subwoofer but I'm thinking of getting a dual voice coil sub in the near future, I could not find a 3ohm DVC subwoofer for my budget, but there is a Pioneer 4ohm DVC sub that can be wired down to 2ohm, should be good. But its quite surprising even with 37.5% power, this new sub is louder and has more punch than the original sub of this system.

    Nothing wrong with using car subs in home theater setup only watch your impedance ohms. I've used 2 Kicker compVR 15" subs 4 ohm each 500wrms in 5.7cu.ft. ported enclosures tuned to 18hz powered by a Kenwood Basic M2 450wrms minimum at 4ohms paired with a modified Sansui C-1000 preamp. My theater room was 750sq.ft. and subs got down to a clean 20-27hz with ease not clipping. If your going to use a car subs in home it's best to have some sort of low pass filter x-over when used with full range amplifiers or buy a subwoofer plate amp with at least 5-10% more power out than the subs rated RMS power for headroom and less clipping distortion. Most of the time power doesn't kill speakers but distortion does. Reason I used car subs is power handling and frequency response at a lower cost than most designed for home audio raw drivers.

    I've the sony dav-tz140. 300w amp, 500w spl 8" car sub it has a box shape enclosure with a decent size bass port and the woofer is behind some thick pvc glass and then I've two floor standing speaker each have 2 speakers that both sound different and a tweeter , those are rated at about 480rms. So in conclusion I've a car sub, 9 speakers and 2 tweeters and also some green led strips that are connected to the subwoofer that light up once the amp is pushing 12v or more

    This is a common problem with sony hts from this era, just google it you will find many sony hts subs have just stopped working out of the blue. but dayum that car sub is AWESOME! A bass tube will sound even better than sealed box sub. Great video as always.

  • @doolkore
    @doolkore 5 років тому +7

    The higher impediance gives the tighter punchier bass but you need an amp to push through it. If your original sub was 1.5 ohm and your new one is 4 then its 37.5% of the rated output which means 105 watts max is going to the sony sub. The higher quality sub combined with a sealed box gives good bass at all frequencies which your previous ported box did not because it was tuned to a certain frequency. In other words, even though it was lower watts, it's better overall because of its superior configuration. Im going to do this with a powerbass 10 inch sub wired to 2, 4, or 8 ohm with a set of polk 6x9 coaxial speakers at 4 ohms each, but I need to find an amp to power the setup....

    • @TechGuyCharlie
      @TechGuyCharlie  5 років тому +2

      You are right! and even though the old sub was 1.5ohm because of the box design the bass used to overwhelm the mids and the highs, and there was no 'punch' to the sound I never enjoyed it, on the other than this car sub makes the home theatre sound a LOT better, especially in movies. I am thinking of getting another one of these exact sub and wire that up in parallel so that impedance becomes 2ohm, can get a little more out of this amp, always wanted to hear a dual sub-HTS setup.

    • @doolkore
      @doolkore 5 років тому +3

      @@TechGuyCharlie You definitely could but it would change it a little. You would gain some power. Sound follows an interesting law where 4x the power is 2x precieved volume increase so it wouldn't be double the precieved bass with 2 subs and it would be a bit less tight almost like sloppy bass but it might not be noticeable. Personally I would get a 4 ohm dual voice coil sub and wire it in parallel. Id also put some polyfill in the enclosure and use the same box to save a little space. Or find a dual 3 ohm sub wired in parallel to exactly match the impedance, that will definitely rattle those windows.

    • @florichi
      @florichi 5 років тому +2

      Who cares how much power it can handle and what impedance it has, if you only need 10W to drive it at 90dB anyway? I bet this sub has at least a 85db efficiency, so no need to worry about power.

    • @doolkore
      @doolkore 5 років тому +2

      @@florichi That is very inciteful. It might be better to keep the setup as it is to keep the high quality of sound. As my father used to say: if it isn't broken don't fix it.

    • @TechGuyCharlie
      @TechGuyCharlie  5 років тому +1

      Hey, Oscar, the Sony DAV-DZ650 subwoofer power is much lower than DZ390K
      the DZ650 is rated at 165WattsRMS and DZ390K is 280Watts RMS the car sub is rated at 300Watts RMS. Impedance should not be an issue since the impedance of the amplifier is lower than that of the subwoofer, but I think the difference is quite a bit when it comes to power! You might feel that the car sub isn't loud enough because it's a little underpowered.

      I don't know bro, just don't end up damaging your amplifier! some LG and Samsung home theatre amps I have seen are rated at 6-8ohms, car subs are generally 4ohm, if you connect a subwoofer rated at a lower impedance than your amp, then you risk damaging your amplifier. Also, the wattage difference should not be much, else your home theatre amp will not be able to drive the sub.

    Great video. If I was you, I would place the sub on the floor instead of a table. I’ve listened your video with high end headphones and I surely can hear that the Sony Xplod subwoofer sounds good and hit very low notes. I am using a Mordaunt Short active subwoofer in my set up at the moment but I do have a spare sub, a Sony passive home theater subwoofer which is bigger than the one in your video and is also rated at 4 ohms. It weighs approximately 50 to 60 lbs (20-25 kg) I want to use it as a second sub with an external amplifier. My receiver has the functionality to hook up an extra amplifier. Do yo have some advice/tips how to hook it up? It’s rated at 140 watt RMS at 8 ohms and 280 watt RMS at 4 ohms. If you need more specs to help me out, let me know. Thanks in advance and a great 2019 my friend! Best, Emiel.

    Dude just add another subwoofer in parallel to the first one..... you will then have 2 Ohms total
    Also you may find better/stronger main speakers on the Internet..... search for the highest dB rating for the main speakers
    Each time a speaker is in parallel with another matching the same specifications, the dB rating/sensitivity rises vastly
    Sony electronics have always used underpowered speakers from the very beginning in these exact home theater units

    Open windows slightly.. I kept xplode 300rms sub in my home with car amp and hooked in my yamaha av receiver.. 😊
    My doubt is when u connect high impedence speaker to a low impedance amplifier then output power will reduce to half.. As it is inversely proportional. Low impedance speaker in high impedance amp definitely blow the amp

    • @CaffeinatedSentryGnome
      @CaffeinatedSentryGnome 5 років тому

      IIRC solid state amps can go equal or higher impedance, where as tube amps can go equal or lower impedance.

    how can you run a 4 ohm speaker on a supply of 1.5 ohm? :3 you can damage your speaker or amplifier when playing too loud.

    • @TechGuyCharlie
      @TechGuyCharlie  5 років тому +2

      Not really, I played this setup at maximum volume for over an hour nothing happened, Class D amplifiers are awesome! they stay stone cold even when driven at such high volumes. But if you run a speaker with lower ohm than amplifier then you will damage the amp. But if the speaker is of higher ohm value and the amp is lower than it will be fine.

    • @benjonesss
      @benjonesss 5 років тому

      Moiz Mushtaq people use 1 ohm stable amps and run 1, 2, and 4 ohms sometimes even .5 ohms if you’re risky

    • @cassidystrickland2557
      @cassidystrickland2557 5 років тому

      You only risk damaging the amp when the speaker ohms are too low , wont hurt the speaker... but the more ohms the speaker the less power the amp will push to it down to a certain wattage then it levels out...people run from 0.5 ohms to 8 and 16 ohms all the time , normally the wattage drop levels out at 4 or 8 ohms

      If m not wrong lesser the ohm more power it uses. So using 4ohm speaker where 1.5ohm was being is gonna be piece of cake for the amp! Correct me if m wrong

      I would have done that bro! But the song is copyrighted and will cause a claim on my video 😌
      By the way, I've played it, let me try and explain. It sounds great for a sealed box subwoofer however A large volume ported box would be the best for songs like 'bass I love you'. This sub box is really tuned for genres like Rock, Pop, EDM, house, and Classics, the bass does not reverberate much but it hits really hard and the bass is clear and won't drown the vocals. Deep house at high volume sounds AMAZING on this.

      I agree! the box is too small and yeah it is not ported either. But my problem is SPACE!! I could easily get a bigger ported box but then the thing would take up so much space. Maybe sometime in the future. :D

    • @ducttaperulestheworl
      @ducttaperulestheworl 5 років тому

      ported or not that really depends on the design of the box. Generally a ported box will need to be larger box size but volume is way higher versus a sealed box.
      Btw have you tested how it performs on movies?

    • @TechGuyCharlie
      @TechGuyCharlie  5 років тому

      @ducttaperulestheworl Yeah! I did, sound better than the stock sub that came with the amp, the bass hits harder and is more accurate and overall there is less reverberation.

      @prabhakar_ 5 років тому

      @@TechGuyCharlie I've never tested sealed box, I've read on the internet that sealed box sounds accurate, & bass tube sounds more punchy ☹️

    • @TechGuyCharlie
      @TechGuyCharlie  5 років тому +2

      Exactly, this sealed box produces bass that has that 'punch' effect, even though the overall loudness is less, also what I have noticed is the quality of the bass is better than the previous sub which was a ported box, earlier there was too much bass with that 'boomy' effect and I did not like it because while watching movies it used to overpower mid frequencies and it definitely lacked the 'punch'
      my personal experience, with a sealed box sub, the bass is cleaner and well balanced.
      It really depends on individual choice. I hope soon, I can borrow my friends bass tube and do a test myself.
