i need everyone to know that this scene used almost NO CG! it was all practical effects! they were actually under water and rhys actually had to learn how to swim with that heavy mermaid tail. rhys, taika and the entire crew put their hearts and souls into this gorgeous scene and it shows.
stede the annoying blabbermouth was so silent this whole episode. he didn't blame his crew once, he didn't cry or scream, he didn't insult izzy when he directly asked for it. he saw (what he thought was) the corpse of the love of his life and he postponed his grief to save his crew. for months he thought of what he wanted to say to ed when he met him again, and the time has finally come, but he's gone. dead. yet he speaks anyway, the way he spoke to ed's wanted poster two episodes before. he speaks for his own sake, not knowing that he's saving ed by doing it.
the way he screams and begs ed to stay alive is unlike any other scene we've seen of stede so far. even though he's the main protagonist and this is the second season, this is a side of stede we hadn't seen before. he's fully genuine, naked, desperate. rhys's subtle portrayal of stede's pain and emotional portrayal of his hope is absolutely breathtaking. he'd better win many, many awards for this.

Am I the only one who finds this scene heart touching and hilarious at the same time? I was sobbing and crying my eyes out, and as Ed was drowning I was guessing that Stede will jump in the water to save him, but then merman Stede appears and I just lost it. This series is the most amazing thing ever created honestly.

Can we all take a moment to recognize that this scene is one of the best metaphors I've ever seen put onto screen. One of the struggles being faced by this character is his oh-so painful split between two identities; the one people have constructed for him, and the one he feels he can never deserve. Firstly there's Blackbeard; a fiction, a terror, and a figment of people's imaginations come to life to crush him under the weight. He was constructed by other people with little choice of what that would mean for him.
And then there's Ed; a person, a human, who he thought he'd get to be until the one person who made him feel real vanished away, leaving him ripped apart and unsure of who he was.
When he became Ed in season 1, there was still so much uncertainty, because the Ed that was there was still, somewhat, like Blackbeard. He was a person. He was a human. But he was also created off of the expectations and love from Stede. Is that a bad thing? No. Not necessarily. But it does mean that it would be more difficult for him to truly become his own person. Made it easier for him to be torn apart and become what he did during the start of Season 2. Made it easier to feel as if he'd disappointed and let down everyone, because he didn't know how to be either person, so it would just be easier if he was nothing at all.
And then we get this scene.
This brilliant, incredible, amazing scene that says so much in so little time.
Ed was never going to be able to shake Blackbeard. It's too heavy to push away, and too sharp to unhook from his skin. He said it in the first season. The only way Blackbeard was ever going away, was if he died.
    And that's what's happened.
    Blackbeard died.
Which means that for the first time ever, Ed (new, reborn, and stumbling into his own) has a chance to live.

I also love that this isn't Stede simply rescuing Ed, he doesn't pull him up or unties the rope. In reality Stede also doesn't touch Ed's body, just sits near and talks to him - and he manages to reach the last bit of life left in Ed. Stede in the purgatory gives Ed hope, a promise of a future, of a home - warmth, food, intercourse. Ed chooses to live because now, the one person that understood him to his core, is there - and the scene with Izzy, where despite them not being together for who knows how long, Stede knows Ed would either watch the world burn or die trying, and he still loves Ed and chooses him.
And then Edward. Poor, broken Edward that believes the worst about himself. He doesn't choose to live just for Stede, he want to live but doesn't see a reason for it but now he knows there is at least one person that cares for him and that means, maybe - just maybe, he can learn to care for and love himself. The fact Stede stays with him underwater for as long as Ed needs to think it through. The feeling of being known and the hope that he can become Ed, or Jeff, or whatever version he wants, because despite it being incredibly hard - now he isn't walking that road alone.

I haven't sobbed this hard at a TV show in years, but something about Stede begging him to wake up (while a montage of their best moments played) just had me hysterically sobbing :( My eyes even hurt from crying lol
I really could relate to Ed on some level (I think we all can) when he felt unlovable :( Also, it breaks my heart that Stede put aside his grief to rescue his crew first before going below decks to see Edward!
The song choice was absolutely perfect and Stede as a mermaid?? Yes, it was a little silly and weird, but that's what I love about this show!

I believe David said that this scene needed to feel mythical, because the relationship between these two is so profound that their returning to each other happens in this beautiful underwater place. Somehow, despite being a comedic show, Our Flag Means Death tells one of the most real love stories I've ever seen. It's comedic in the way most Taika projects are-- where they make you laugh just as much as they make you cry. This show has touched me so much that my sister and I are getting matching tattoos of Blackbeard's flag.

God, how could Jenkins dare to do so much and break my heart like this? I seriously haven't been able to stop crying since the episode came out on Thursday, it's literally one of my favorite scenes in the season. This exceeds my expectations and is going to leave me without emotional stability.

This is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, has me in floods every time I watch it. When Stede just stands at the door looking at Ed with that music, my heart breaks. 💔
