For the stars... I use a dremel on mine, I use the flex shaft attachment and it makes things a bit easier. 1. Find a stencil on Amazon for like $10 (you can make your own if you have a Cricut machine) 2. I spray a light coat of white paint, just enough to make it trace onto the board 3. Start my outline with the tool. My recommendation on this.. don’t do each star individually. Find yourself a good angle on the board and do all those edges first. Rotate the flag and do the other edges of the stars. That will keep you most consistent. 4. Start carving out the rest of the stars. Now just as with the edging on step 3. Do the same carving here. Depending on your angle carve out a few triangles and then rotate to cut the rest of the triangles in the star 5. Switch the tip to a grinding stone. It’s shaped like a bullet. Do all the stars which acts like a sander but it will also allow you to correct your lines/edges on all the stars. It looks great, trust me!! Then finish it off with whatever clear coat you want. To each their own. You can take the easy way and just spray the stars on but to me it just takes away from what it could really look like...Beautiful! WARNING ⚠️. I can say that it is about 1 min per star overall and with continuous use of the dremel tool. Your arm will feel numb for the next day or so. Take breaks if you have too. On another note, I do have a blower attachment that goest on the fleet shaft. That goes on first and then your bit. It will blow out all your dust away. it’s optional GOOD LUCK!!

Very beautiful work, and very well explained. The only issue I had was at 4:20, I was scared to death you were gonna cut your fingers off. This is the first video I have saw of yours, and other than that I thought it was awesome!
Hi Great videos. I like your projects Im starting to get in to wood working more now. I've seen your VA licenses plates in previous videos. I noticed that you had a Chesapeake shirt on? I live in the Driver area of Suffolk. Small world
Ive made mine similar, but with thinner strips (3/8). I can get one 19 x 37 flag from one 2x4. But I like the thicker strips like this much better. I'm going to try this method on my next flag. Thanks, you do great work.
Howard Prince I found some online that were close to the original badges. Copied them into my silhouette studio and drew the rest by hand with the mouse. It takes a while but once you get it done you can save it for future uses
I don't currently own a torch. Was looking at the BernzOmatic Trigger-Start Model #TS4000KC or its bigger brother the Model #TS8000KC. Any idea which one would be a better fit for this kind of use?
Robert Lucas Yes, I have a couple of videos on my channel talking about making the decals and applying them. Here’s a link to one I did for another flag. ua-cam.com/video/5W10p4bJbvs/v-deo.html
Small hand torch does take time, I have started using big torch that I bought at harbor freight, it hooks up to a big bottle. Makes big projects not so big.
Patriots1645 I have to do another union on a flag, I’ll be doing that in the next few days. I’ll do a quick video of the stencil start to finish and post it for you.
After you cut your strips to 5/8" do you plain them again to make sure the cut thickness is also even and if you do what thickness do you end up with? Thanks.
I usually plain them before I rip them. Once I rip them down I go ahead and put the flag together. It’s usually around 5/8 sometimes just a hair smaller.
You got it done to set pattern now Po Po. As my Paw Paw would say “now your thinking with your thinker”. There are many sayings one could say about the way you have jigs set up but in the end it saves time and effort plus your productivity is at the highest. Great job Po Po and what an honor to see the hard work you out on to the most wonderful flag in the world. Congrats for making a beautiful piece or art.
I am starting to make these myself, aside from what's in the video what other advise would you have for a beginner? A major problem I am having is getting all my boards to rip straight, I end up with gaps and end up throwing away half my wood. I'm also in VA! NOVA area.
Surviving703 I rip mine out of a 2x4. Before I rip them I run them through my planer and plane about 1/8 inch off both sides, (wide side). Then What I do is I set the table saw up to shave just a hair off of one end. Then I use that flat side against the fence so every cut after will be smooth and straight. (A keeper) lol.The wide side of the 2x4 is the side that butts up against each other on the flag. That insures that the thickness will be the same to help on your gap issues.....hope this helps!
Surviving703 also, if the 2x4 is warped it will mess the flag up unless you have a jointer which I don’t. So, it’s a pain in the a** but I pick through the stack until I find the straightest boards.
El Chapo Guzman Pudo! If the 2x4’s are in good shape, it will take (2) 8ft 2x4’s. It takes 20 strips total, 13 for the flag, 4 for the Frame, and 4 for the back supports. That’s getting 5 strips per 2x4 when ripped on the table saw.
I am lost about the stars. Is it a decal? Does it stay on? Do you paint the stars then remove the decal? Where can I buy the decal? Questions questions please help
frehleycomet what I do is I make a stencil with my silhouette cameo decal machine. So other words it’s like a decal but I stick it on the flag, then paint the stars on and remove the decal. Once the paint dries I put 3-4 coats of poly over the entire flag covering the paint also. Hobby Lobby in my area sells star stencils. Maybe you could check with them if you don’t have a decal machine
I didn't fully understand how to get the vinyl stickers to actually stick...did you apply the poly, let it dry and then simply apply the vinyl? Or is there an additional method? TIA, Chris
Chris Manor yes, I put a heavy coat of poly on it and let it dry. Then I sanded the area where you will place the vinyl with 220 grit sand paper. Then I placed the vinyl stencil on. The smooth poly will help the vinyl stick a lot better.
Do you sand the burned wood after it cools to remove the loose dust before you do another work? I have noticed that if you don't that a lot of the residue comes of on your hands, clothing, etc. Thanks.
Mike Ledee yes! As soon as I get done burning I go ahead and sand it down. It will still come off a little until you get the first coat of clear on it.
Mike Ledee I made a template out of MDF board and payed them on that. When I put the braces on the back of the flag I used a hammer and tapped all the strips flat before I nailed the support to the back. I did that with each support.
Ryan Milne if you have a local hobby lobby they have star stencils available if you just wanted to use stars. Or if you have a local decal shop you could tell them what you wanted and what size you need and use that to get your design.

If you have a cameo just trace a star out and size it to 1.1 inch then duplicate as many as you need. I placed them where I thought they looked right, then went from top to bottom and centered each row. Then went from side to side on each row and used the middle adjust to line them up that way. tyler Tsai I purchased a “BernzOmatic High-Intensity Trigger-Start Head Handheld Head” from Lowe’s. It runs off of the 1lb propane tanks and does really good! It lasts a while too.
Yep, I actually do have one now that hooks to the big propane tank. It’s a lot faster but you have to be more careful with it because it burns really fast lol.
Terry Bartley yes that’s right. The first coat of poly helps the stencil/decal stick better. Also keep the decal from pulling small pieces of wood up when you remove it. Once the stars are painted on, I apply 3 to 4 more coats of poly.
Levi Boyd I make the union graphic with a vinyl decal. I use the decal as a stencil and paint the graphic on them poly over them. Planing, I just plane them down enough to get all the bad spots out of the wood so that it’s even. Counting both sides prolly around 1/4 inch

(J) The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.
I feel that putting any logo especially a business logo on the field of an American flag.. is very disrespectful. Would you salute that flag? That is NOT the flag I served under.
This is desecration of the flag, and in violation of United States Flag Code. Ironic that an attempt to be patriotic is the opposite, especially with the signs, advertisements, shields, insignias, and stripes.
Pat Burt But it’s not really a “flag”. It is an image of a flag on wood. It would be different if somebody put a logo on an actual American Flag they were flying. I was curious about this and read the code too.

qball9799 I use a silhouette cameo to cut the design out of vinyl. Then use it as a stencil to paint the graphic on
Cut and took list ?
How many 2x4s did you buy for this flag
Ethan Lamberson I bought (3) 2x4x8ft
@@PoposWoodworks how did you get 13 pieces of wood out of the three 2x4s
@@ethanlamberson289 Each strip is .625" x 1.5" x 37", you can get 8 pieces out of each 2 x 4
Where did you get the badge template from?
Kevin Whitley I took a photo of our departments badge and uploaded to my design program to draw it out.
Good morning, what's the dimension per strip and what is the dimension for where the stars go? What color blue did you use and what kind is it?
4:18 Holy Cow. Try to keep the fingers.
Nice.....
How much you charge to make someone one
Courvoisier White I charge $150 for the custom flag, $120 for just stars in the union
you lost me at the very end. Did you say after you torch them you add a coat of poly before painting on the stars?
Terry Bartley yes that’s right. The first coat of poly helps the stencil/decal stick better. Also keep the decal from pulling small pieces of wood up when you remove it. Once the stars are painted on, I apply 3 to 4 more coats of poly.
@@PoposWoodworks Thank you
Are you using spray poly or wipe on?
Marcus DeBoard I’m using the brush on poly. It’s in the quart size can and I use the clear gloss kind.
Thanks. I figured as much but I just wanted to make sure. Amazing work, brother!
I find that 1 1/4 brads work better.
Also what thickness are you planing them to?
Levi Boyd I make the union graphic with a vinyl decal. I use the decal as a stencil and paint the graphic on them poly over them. Planing, I just plane them down enough to get all the bad spots out of the wood so that it’s even. Counting both sides prolly around 1/4 inch
Where do you get the vinyl decals?
Levi Boyd I have a silhouette cameo vinyl cutter and make my own decals/stencils.
Popo's Woodworks what are the dimensions of the flag?
jesus christ ,man! I about lost my mind at ua-cam.com/video/pSDMVyWRohI/v-deo.html
I thought the same thing!!! Every bone in my body was screaming when I seen how closely his hands were moving near the running blade
THE FLAG IS RED WHITE and BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Orvel & Carolyn Witt
These color flags are actually supposed to show support for our law enforcement
It's a subdued flag.
I couldn’t agree More respect it
The flag's also not wood, so what?
You'd have less waste if you bought 10' 2X4's
4 U.S. Code § 8 - Respect for flag
(a)
“Whoever knowingly casts contempt upon any flag of the United States by publicly mutilating, defacing, defiling, burning, or trampling upon it shall be fined not more than $1,000 or imprisoned for not more than one year, or both.”
(g)
The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.
(J)
The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.
Pretty sure respect for that law went right out the window in the Vietnam era.
I feel that putting any logo especially a business logo on the field of an American flag.. is very disrespectful.
Would you salute that flag? That is NOT the flag I served under.
Nice video except the stripe under the union is a white stripe. It give the union a real border.
Two fast very confusing. You skipped many parts
What terrible English. Did you spray or brush on a coat of Poly before you did the stars
Jim Hamilton I brushed a coat on before the adding the stars, then brushed on 3 more coats after. I use a synthetic brush to put on poly.
Why deface the American flag?
You are right--especially the blue stripe and insignias and shields added. Totally in violation of the United States Flag Code.
Look up the Flag Code again. This is technically NOT a flag and in no way a violation of the flag code.
I was loving that, until you showed it with the blue line, That’s not a flag.
... what is it then?
SHIT
Why do you have a problem with the people who would risk their life to save yours
Jeff Toulson my same exact sentiment
Riley Ober because the line represents “Division”. Is that simple.
@Pat Burt, you are a funny one! You also have no idea about what the hell you are talking about! Go away troll!
Pound sand douche
A subdued flag is not a desecration
@pat burt👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
How much do you sell them for
Andy Valdez Around $160-$190 depending on the customization
