How do I get a black box....
@@forzatuner3916 lol. That’s something I put together to say better organized.
This is a awesome demonstration
What's up my brother Broke.... We were talking about Milky Spores a few weeks ago. I didn't want to make the video too long or too nerdy but this is the same bacteria used in Milky Spores. As the bacteria is ingested by the caterpillar it causes it to stop feeding and die. Once dead the spores are released. Absent the UV rays from the sun it too would continue to reproduce each time it comes in contact with the caterpillar. The Milky Spores continue its life cycle because it is in the ground. We shouldn't have to reapply. The things I missed in school....
@@growingoutthebox good info had to screen shot, bro you doing awesome. I'm going live Sunday 👀
@@BrokeFarmer I have you on notification so I will definitely be "in the building" .... Keep doing what you are doing Brotha'. Your personality will carry you a long way. Everyone can't do what you do.
You actually have a box. Ok. Great video.
Yeap! lol.😀 A box.... Last year I got 1 squash off before the vine borers Won that battle. "So Far So good"
Love the black box
LOL.... I thought it would add a bit more interest. 👍
I’m going to save this video for future reference ☺️
Thank you very much for adding it to your watch later videos. That helps others find it. I appreciate that.
Great demonstration and explanation for everything! 👍🏾👍🏾🙂
Thank you LaLa. Nothing like showing what you are talking about. It takes a lil longer to do the videos but I love learning and sharing. Keep Growing Out The Box.
Cool video! Love your vine borer briefcase 👍🏾
A lot of backyard gardeners have all but given up on trying to grow squash. Mine are still producing so I wanted to share.
@@growingoutthebox thanks for sharing
OMG this is so informational! ❤ You are going to be known as the Garden Doctor soon! 👨🏽🌾💉🌱🧤 Great info!
LOL.... "Garden Doctor" rotf 😂 Ok... maybe like Frankenstein.
Man!..so well done..this is one of the best videos I've seen in a long time!
Wow Mike.... It is absolutely my pleasure Brother. We all learn from each other.
Thanks for that very helpful information!! 👍 Yes, I was almost going to stop growing them too, but I will try your method and see if I have better results!! Thanks for sharing! 👍😊 Got to bring out the black box to fight 🤛👊🤜 off these pests in the garden!! 🌱👍
Yeah, when you bring out the black box we know it's about to get serious. 😂 We are not giving up on our squash and zucchini.
As well.as I. Gonna give it 50/50 paste & hopefully the round zucchini will heal and bounce back
I just love your channel. So informative and entertaining at the same time. You use your voice very effectively I must add.💪🍎
Most gardeners want to know this stuf so when I learn about it I try to explain it the way I want it explained to me.

Now that is a very interesting Pelican Brief; thank you for sharing such great information. Be well and be safe. Peace and blessings
Heeeey, had to break out the tool box for this one. I'm not playing with these vine borers. 😂
Nice video
Thanks Brother. Learning as I grow.
Another good one!
Still growing my Brother.

You are right on time! This is what I needed! You are serious!😂 This is going into my saved videos with the quickness!!!!! Blessings
So are you still growing squash this year? If so let me know how this works for you and thanks for stopping by,
@@growingoutthebox Yes, still have some butternut and spaghetti, still growing! The squash that got infected, I buried the stem, it rooted, then I cut the stem that had the borer's (7) in! Hope it survives! I will keep a close eye on them, now that I have another back up plan! Thank you!
I mixed my cinnamon, turmeric powder a few weeks ago. I need to add my syringe and get some BT so I’ll be ready. Thanks for sharing.😊👍🏽👍🏽
Absolutely! That moth is pretty smart. They will lay eggs on the leaf stems when they can't find a spot on the stalk. We have to stay 2 steps ahead. 😀
@@growingoutthebox I’m not a fan of the moth. All the caterpillars are gross. But I know we have to deal with nature if we want to grow. I plan to get some BT and use your method. Thank you for sharing.😊
I always enjoy seeing your videos. Thanks for the detailed information
As I learn I try to share and thank you for being so supportive. If you think someone else would benefit from this video please share. It will also help grow this channel. 💗
Ut oh, not the Black Box! 😅 Great information. Definitely going to do this. Thanks so much .
Right, the black box! Those vine bores took me out last year so i couldn't wait to try again. So far so good but it requires that you do a visual every day. 😳😳
Very Informative Man!! Thank you 💜👍🏾
Thank you Miss. Linda . 🍎 I'm working on something for you as a token of appreciation for all that you do for the gardening community.
Thank you for the information. I will give this a try.
Most people have given up trying to grow squash. I hope you are able to use this info. So far so good.
Very useful ! I mixed up that paste the last time I pruned leaves! So far so good !!!
With squash vine borers I felt the need for even more protection. We're in this together! 😀
That black box! What! LOL.... I love that black box. It looks official and then it makes so much since. Keep bringing this kind of content. I will be saving this for next year.
You just gotta have that black box
Surgical precision!
I don't know how I missed your comment but I make it a priority to answer all. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to watch.
Im a new subscriber and fairly new to gardening. I feel like i just watched an episode of forensic files! Ive been binge watching your videos for a couple days now. I'm captivated and motivated!!!
LOL.... and when all else fails. I have a backup plant.🤣
Good information! Love it.
Thank you. I know you are going to be ready for your garden next year.
Great video very informative ..
As I learn I like to share. I hope this was of use to you.
I did this method last season. I also took marigolds, steeped them in hot water like a tea, let it cool and sprayed my plants with it to help mask the smell of the squash plants. It works, but the spray must be applied every few days. I got annoyed with having to do that lol so this year, I kept my squash in my greenhouse.
You would be correct. Squash require more attention than most any other plant. Pruning and growing vertical make a great difference but for me the game changer is the injections. Masking with marigolds is a good idea also. Thats "Growing Out The Box". 💪
This is the most direct, easy to understand and informative descriptions for injecting BT I’ve seen… Thank you!! About to give it a try on 2 plants that are under attack… wish me luck!!
Good luck.... Timing is everything.
Thank you for the tip on using rainwater instead of tapwater with BT. I never knew that’s why I didn’t work.
Happy to help! Make sure you click the notification bell. Several new videos will be up next week.
"The Black Box" - how ominous, I love it! I've been doing Bt treatments for the last few years, and that is the #1 thing that has allowed me to grow any squash at all. But this is the first time I've heard about the benefits of turmeric and cinnamon - I'll be adding that to my own "black box" of squash plant treatment techniques. Thank you for sharing your gardening wisdom.
Definitely growing squash under some type of covering next year.

aluminum foil wrapped around the stem at the soil level keeps them from getting to the plant.that is what i used.i had no trouble...and mine grew along the ground/squashes.
Thanks for the tip. Vine borers lay eggs on leaves as well. It’s hit or miss sometimes.

I had to circle back to this to share with some online friends…and man…it was even better than I remembered!
Oh thank you
Thanks so much for making a point about cutting into the stem to try and get the vine borer. It never made sense to me that wouldn't cause harm to the plant. And no one else talks about it - or thinks about it? And this is the first I've heard of using those spices to mask the scent of the damage. Making it into a paste take it's over the top. Dusting with anything is difficult. Brilliant, and thank you!
Oh thank you so much
Happy Friday. Great useful information. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.
And a happy Friday to you. I know it’s late in the season for squash but I wanted to share what has been working for me this year. You know it’s serious when you have to bring out the black box. 😂
Good info
Glad you think so!
I have to get me one of those black boxes.! LOL
LOL.... It's been a game changer.
Good info to have in the toolbox if needed. Luckily, we've never
had an issue with vine borers. Now, if you have some organic magic
to deter/kill Japanese Beetles, 1, your fortunate. 2, we could put
that to good use.
TYFS
Hey Mark. I hope all is well with you and the wife. Actually, Milky Spores which is also bacillus thuringiensis BT is a one time soil treatment for grubs.Just as caterpillars are susceptible to treatment with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), Japanese beetle larvae are susceptible to treatment with milky spore. It's feeds off the larvae of the grubs and continues to spread sores. It's also organic. Control the grubs you control the Japanese Beetle. It's not a overnight process but it is from what I have gathered one, if not the best long term treatment.
@@growingoutthebox TY, we'll look into it.
The black box sure is hard core. I'm hooked on these videos. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm going to try this on my zucchini. It's not looking too good at the moment.
😩Those vine borers are serious!
Great advice. I was going to give up growing squash this year but I think I’ll try again. I’m in Austin Texas and the SVB seem to love it here!
It is work dealing with the vine borers. I’m going to try growing under netting this year and do some hand pollination. I already have my netting so please click the notification button.
Some great details compared to the other videos I have seen. I too have given up on growing Zucchini because just as it starts to bear fruit the plant dies. I tried the BT injection that did not work but I think you have added details that lead to a greater chance of success. I am trying to grow a variety that does not need the flowers to be fertilized so I can cover my plants with netting to keep the bugs off of them. But I still will try to do as you suggested. This is the first I have seen from you and I will agree with others that it is among the best. Very detailed, showing examples but not drawing it out to a long video. Just the facts. Continued success.
I’m growing Mexicans zucchini this year and will try hand pollinating
Great video Bra kick those pesky bugs in the middle of next year and take no prisoners Sir👍👍
Thanks for sharing🤝💯
It's challenging as a new gardener but that what motivates me.
@@growingoutthebox NEW GARDENER❓ I can't tell, your doing an awesome job. Keep up the good work Sir🤝💯
This was great information. A little too much work for me with my schedule and just think it's easier to buy squash at the farmers market. Thanks so much for this great information if I ever decide to go back to growing.
Once again you are correct. lol. It is a lot of work but more than that for me was the challenge. They are still growing and producing. The bed was built with netting in mind so next year it will be easier.
The best YT video on squash vine borer. Period. Thank you.
Wow, thanks! I just try to show what I do. It's not for everyone. I also cusseccion plant so even if I lose the plant or it stops producing there is another right behind it.
This is a very useful video. Thank you for making it. This year, I had vine borers in my cucumber plants. I planted 25 seeds and managed to save 5 plants by injecting them. I didn't realize turmeric was of such great use. I'm heading out now, to apply some. Thank you!

@@growingoutthebox Thanks for the tips.
The best video on the subject that I've seen! THx

Great information! I will most definitely try this with my squash next year. Those squash vine borers have gotten me the two years that I have tried growing squash, but not next year.
So far so good on this end but don’t feel too bad because they got me last year which is why I was so determined to whip this year.

Excellent. First video of yours that I've seen. Your voice, delivery, information and editing are all very good making for a very watchable and informative video. If you want to grow your channel, post more frequently. Nice work.
I would say 81k subs is fairly good for 2 years. If you are referring to views, check out my shorts and thanks for your input. The engagement I believe is my greatest asset. Sometimes growing too fast can hurt your channel. I think I have found the sweet spot. I post long form once every 3 weeks and get 3 shots from each video. Again, success here on UA-cam depends on your goals. 🫡
BT and syringe... okay. I like the tumeric cinnamon idea too. I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks.
It is work. This year I will try a cage on a few plants and hand pollinate
Since you are growing vehicle and have allot of vine exposed you could wrap the vine and stake together with foil and that will help keep the vine borer from being able to bore into the vine
That’s a lot of energy for something that won’t matter much. The vibe borer will land on leaves and stems as well. I just spread my squash around the garden. I also use kaolin clay as temperatures rise. They won’t lay eggs on the clay.
Thank you!! Going to try this, we’re already having problems with them it’s devastating
I have backup plants this year.
Amazing! TY!

Great ideas! I just replanted my squash after a major vine bore season. This may be the best remedy if having a long growing season. I tried cutting off the bad leaves and stems to no avail. I split every stem open and killed all of the worms as well. I might try the BT next year. I did harvest lots of yellow squash and zucchini before the vine bore devastation.
I'm going to try Kaolin clay since I use it on other plants.
I have some BT but I need that kit. TFS

In my opinion the squash bug does more damage cause I rarely run across the vine bore. The squash bug are like bed bugs. Once they get started they're hard to get rid of. Their life cycle happens so fast they're all over that plant in no time.

Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for the great video! Now I know what killed my zucchini last summer. It was my first year growing them. I also heard a gardener say he wraps the stalk with foil. Have you heard of this?
Yes I have heard of wrapping the stalk but the vine borer will lay eggs on leaves as well. If you are allowing them to crawl just bury the stalks as the plant grows and remove leaves from the area where it has already fruited and bury it. No sure way but that increases your chances.
@@growingoutthebox Ok, thank you. I am a new gardener. Do you have a video on how to set up a small backyard garden? Right now, I am planting vegetables in between my flower garden. I also purchase 5-gallon buckets.
Every tip you touch on was excellent. I will upgrade my needle and will use only rain water and add the cinnamon and tumeric to mask my pruning of leaf. I only injected the BT and I sprayed. Did not do the rest. Thank you brother. Can’t wait to do battle with that vein bug.
Thanks for stopping by. Also, where ever you suspect a hole from the vine borer inject the BT at least 4 inches above. Where there is evidence on a leaf cut it back to the stalk. Growing vertical allows for better inspection so you can stop damage sooner. Happy growing and if you come up with something with better effect please let me know.
Nice,I never know how to get rid of squash borer in the garden.. thank you.

Glad it was helpful! I think I may just hand pollinate and cover them.
@growingoutthebox sometime this winter if you can do a vid on sweet peppers that is a general tutorial and one that deals with disease and pest threats and protection,I would love that. I had only one pepper plant grow and it also looked fabulous! It bloomed but never produced pepper. Then I saw black fugus it appeared, on areas throughout the length of the stem. I researched and believe it is Black Leg virus or fungus. Can you elaborate on this disease and how to combat it? I thought that my solo pepper babe was all good...sadly, she succumbed to it.
Sweet peppers are pretty much straight forward. but I just may do that because In my #TNOG2022springgardeningwrapup a few people didn't know why their sweet peppers were dropping leaves and not producing during this heat spell we have been having. That's normal because sweet peppers don't care for temps over 85 degrees. Hot peppers are a little better in heat up to maybe 95 and then they will slow as well. I talk about it in the #TNOG2022springgardeningwrapup video on my channel. Let me know if that helps?.
Great technique!
It is work. lol.... I'm building covers over them this year so hopefully I won't have any issues next season.
@@growingoutthebox the foundation is always the largest job but it will be well worth it in the end 🙏🏽🦋
That’s some impressive, surgical technique!! I’m not sure I’m that committed, though. I will plan to grow vertically in at least half of my zucchini and squash, carefully prune, cover vines with foil and use BT injections. But, in the end, I plant more in my greenhouse after my first round have started growing in my beds. This way, if I lose the battle, I’ve got backup plants. 🤞🏻🙏
Those vine borders are something serious! I think in the future I may do a netting enclosure and hand pollinate. Something I have been wanting to do for a while.
Very nice. Love the attention to detail
It’s a task lol
@@growingoutthebox absolutely. When i find the borer eggs i use a torch lighter on them until they pop. Minimal damage to the plant and it guarantees to me that the egg is toast.
My squash did nothing this year. I just bowed to the borer.
The moth that lays the eggs for the squash vine borer is now gone back underground so if you still had a plat that made it this far you would be in great shape. Right now my plants are thriving with ease. "We have to get you a black box"! LOL🤣I also tried using grafting tape around the stalk of the plant. It also worked so do give up, we just have to be more creative. Beautiful day to you.

I think you are referring to the okra. It’s not for everyone but it’s one of my best crops. I’m learning different ways to prepare them. I actually like them when they are about 2-1/2 inches long raw with blue cheese dip and split in half when about 3-1/2 inches long in the air fryer. You should try it and let me know if you liked it?
Nice, I am going to try that on my squash👍
