Killing The Squash Vine Borer Moth | Organic Gardening Methods

- Today I will show you how I plan to go to WAR with the Squash Vine Borer Moth using a BIO pesticide called BT or, Bacillus Thuringiensis. It is a natural bacteria found in the soil, when ingested by certain caterpillar larva, they starve, and stops the process of destroying squash plants. It is nontoxic to humans, pets, and beneficial insects such as bees and other pollinators.

Excellent video Stephanie you did a very good job explaining the vine bug and how are you going to treat your plants. I pray that the bugs don’t get most of your plants this year. You’re doing such an excellent job in your garden.❤
Wow Stephanie, you have a good eye for spotting the eggs!!! I would have never noticed them until it was too late. You are going to have one heck of a harvest!! ❤
I never see those eggs! Old..

You two are a wealth of knowledge. So much research!❤
Steph, you’re very educational. I wonder what it is about the squash plants that the squash bugs prefer over other plants. Watching you tend to your garden, makes me appreciate the farmers so much more. Have a great day ❤❤❤
Thank you for this. Squash vine borer‘s are the bane of my existence! They kill my squash every year!
Hi Stephanie great informative video hope it works this year for you and they don’t destroy your plants they are looking so healthy and growing so well. Thanks for sharing have a great day take care and God Bless 🙏💕🧑🌾

Stephanie that is amazing, I love how you do your videos they are all so interesting thank you
You are so knowledgeable Stephanie I’ve learned a lot from you and Buddy. Thank you ❤🎉
Thank you for this ! I lost all my zucchini last year . They hallowed out my entire plant and I didn’t notice until it was too late.
Wow I have been on ISS for years and have commented on every video and have never gotten a reaction or comment. Love pages that acknowledge followers.
Make sure to plant a second group of zucchini to plant when yours get to beat up.
I hope it works great & controls those pesky moths! 🤞🏻 The plants are so beautiful!
Very good idea Steph I hope it helps no one likes BUGS👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I seen those bugs boring in 10"-12" above soil level. I lost one side vine on a butternut because I didn't think to look that high up the vine. Needle method has been working fine for me, so far. Central Texas.
So glad you don’t us man made pesticides think that is what is a lot our health problems !
Oh inpray this works for you your squash plants are so beautiful and producing so well
That was very helpful ❤
I loved how educational this video is. I haven't had a lot of problems with squash pests, and that is fortunate considering all the pumpkins I grow for my family every year. But it is good to know what to look for. 💖💖💖
Great tutorial Steph.
In the Amazon cart! Thanks so much Stephanie

I absolutely love Lester and Jami and don’t miss any of their videos. I watch the other chanels on Morrow Hill from time to time, but nit on a daily basis. But I have to say that I stated following you after your Live with Jami and I’ve been hooked. You and Buddy are my next favorite couple on Morrow Hill next to Lester and Jami.
I’m a city girl so I don’t do gardening by any means…but I enjoy watching your videos so much , you are so knowledgeable in so many things I’ve learned a lot from you.
I’m going to try the injections. Great idea! I use DE in the soil. I like using natural. Love your channel!
Thank you for that great information, I did have an issue with those moths last year at the end of the season, I used the diatomaceous earth, it seemed to work !! Have a blessed day!!
Hey Steph, have a wonderful day
Thank you so much for this video, I just found a squash borer in one of my pumpkin plants. Definitely gonna try this tomorrow
I learn so much on your channel, you have become my favorite.
Yay! Thank you!
Stephanie, fantastic video on saving plants from the squash vine bore moth. I had never heard of that type of treatment before. I love your knowledge and the idea of using a syringe to inject the plants with the treatment. Thanks again, you're awesome.
That's cool I hope it works for you you've worked so hard on this I'll be thinking good thoughts!🕯🧡💜🧡
Beautiful job…..😍🫣🫣🫣😍
gonna be a good crop Steph good job ❤❤❤
I hope the BT works. I quit planting zucchini and yellow squash because I could never harvest any. Maybe I will try again this year.
Keep at it with me 😀
Nice info
Pesky worms 🐛 Great share, Thank you Stephanie 🌱🌸
Here in middle ga personally I use NEEM OIL SPRAY….. I’ve heard u can use whole milk in a spray and aluminum foil wrapped at the base of the plant a few inches up could help
Your county extension agents are excellent for this info. Not enough people know they are there for you. They can identify pests and diseases, test your soil, do a site visit, and they have pubs that explain all of this. In Florida, it is UF/Ifas and then your county. Georgia also supports their extension agents.
Thank you for this info! I have many mandevilla flowering plants that caterpillars are eating up so I just ordered some of this. Will not spray on my milkweed though as I raise monarch butterflies and don’t want to kill those eggs or caterpillars.
Stephanie I have been plagued by these horrible borers also here in Central FL, did the BT spray and also injected my stems. I may have tried to remediate too late, as I lost my entire crop of zucchinis. I tried a different variety of squash this year, had no borer issues, but I didn't love the squash : ( so I guess I'll just keep hitting the farmers' markets for zucchs.
Thanks for the video ~ it's key to itervene early. In my opinion, if you see frass, it's too late.
Great info! It would be great if you would do a series on organic solutions to different pests. I am trying to grow organically too. I don’t have a big area (all containers and green stalk) so any loss Is terrible because I don’t have backups! Thank you Steph!
Great idea! I'll do that
❤❤❤
I have that trouble every year, thank you so much for explaining the moth, I have seen that moth in the garden I’ve seen the eggs too and I use BT also but I didn’t know I could inject the stem. Cause that’s what looks chewed up and dying then it’s too late. Thanks I’m Rosie
Hi I use alot of white vinegar in my garden. It's good for killing weeds. I use it for cleaning windows etc. I use goat soap. Don't like things that has smell in it. Love yours and Jami garden.
Your squash are so beautiful and so big already! I hope you can eliminate those moths!!
Hope the treatment works well for you!
Hi 👋 Stephanie and Buddy 🎉❤
This is really great info! I noticed pre-made sprays say to apply about once a week- is there a shorter shelf life when you prepare the solution yourself?
I find this channel, so calm and relaxing and the humor between you and Buddy is fun to💕
That was a perfect job for your stool. Did you use it?
Yes I did on the outside, but the inside lanes are getting overrun by the melons already 😆🤦🏻♀️
Thank goodness we don’t get them. We do get the white moths that basically do the same but I don’t think they are as vicious. I just use Neem Oil on the leaves and I put marigolds all around my garden. Marigolds keeps all bugs away basically because the bugs don’t like the aroma they put off. I haven’t had a bug issue in a very long time. I will see a few here and there but they don’t do any damage…even with the horned tomato caterpillar.
You absolutely amaze me with your knowledge. Garden so beautiful and producing early. I watch all your videos and learn something new every time. My Sprouts doing great - do wild birds eat these too? I don’t have chickens but lots of song birds. Just asking.
I don’t miss PawPaw tapes and yours. Like LHL/IMA but not as calming as yours. Love Stella 💕
Hope your spine is and stays better. Sorry you have that.
Can I plant Brussel Sprouts in a barrel tub planter? I know zip about gardening (have the brown thumbs) love yellow squash, green beans and sprouts my favorites.
Florida sun wicked 9 months but I do have semi shaded areas.
Thank you & Buddy for great tutorials on “healthy things to make”.
Keeping it real❤️
You sure can plant brussel sprouts in tubs. And the sprouts may go bad by the time the wild birds figure them out but it's worth a try!
♥♥👉👩👈♥♥
BT for little Vbastagezz
Hope your rested and doing well today
Thanks Denmans🙏
Have you ever taken your squash blossoms and deep fried them. They are very good.
That’s what killed my zucchini plant! It was going so well and then the next day, booom! It was all wilted. I saw the exposed stem. It was heartbreaking and discouraging. I haven’t tried it again. I will look for that product you used. Thanks for sharing!
Good luck, hope it works.
❤
BT also works great to keeping down the mosquito larva in standing water areas. Does not hurt dragon flies or bees.
👍
I found that there can be two generation in the season…. Just saw new ones emerging late july.
Yes, there are 2 generations. I tried planting to miss them, but in short season it’s impossible.
So, Bt can be used as a prevention as well as a treatment afterwards. Inspect your vines daily!
Hope you can get rid of the squash bugs
I got INFESTED with squash bugs last year. I had never seen them before and thought it was a stink bug at first. Oh my! It was horrible. They were everywhere! I’m afraid to try squash again this year.
I hear you Beth. Is there a different area in your yard you can plant the squash?
@@thedenmanhomestead Hi Steph 👋🏻
Yes, I’ll have to figure something out. The funny thing is I bought a squash plant at a nursery and planted it in a big pot. I believe that introduced them into my yard. 🐞 😡
Love watching your videos!!
Praying this BT works and saves your squash crop.
💯💯👍👍❤❤
She is A Organically person 😊
These are the WORST bugs! I never knew they existed until I moved out to the east coast and now I have to battle them to have any squash.
💖🙏
How did this work out? They got me last year, wasn't going to do squash but had 3 Rouge pumpkin come in and they are attacking it !
What are thoughts about spinosad soap? Other youtubers say it lasts longer than BT. I don't know....
I have found that the little monsters lay eggs at ground level on my plants! The will tuck their little butts as low on the plant as possible to get their eggs to hatch and enter the plant stem as low as possible...They are a little bug that causes a BIG problem! Squash bugs come right after the borer and finish off any plants that are still alive...If I could come up with a true fix for these two pests...I would grow tons of squash!!
Thank you Steph....Im sorry if this was asked already....but are these moths particular to certain climates/areas? Im am just trying gardening this year but in the past I have never heard of these pests.
They are all over the USA, but they have a shorter life cycle up north. Longer in the south.
Are their any trap plants to repel them?
Also Beatles laid black eggs on back of squash leaf
QUESTION I was prepping my soil for zucchini plants and noticed a Vine Borer Moth come out of the soil. Do I get rid of all the dirt, or just keep digging in the dirt to see if there are more? Now I know why I didn't have a good crop last year. TYSM. I have wrote everything down re. to items you use. Does the moth also travel to other plants?
It is suggested to till in the fall to get them to the surface. It is of no advantage to grow elsewhere as the moth will travel long distances and will find your squash. I’ve tried all methods and we end up doing surgery and burying vines to root away from base. It’s a hideous insect.
Stephanie I was wondering do you know of anything to spray flower beds to kill weeds and not plants? I’ve tried everything I can think of and it’s taking days to just pick them out and days later they are back ugg! Thanks for sharing ❤
Try commercial grade vinegar
@@thedenmanhomestead
Yes ma’m I’ve tried that I got it at the feed store Thank you so much for your advice
Those little bugs are vicious little eaters.
Greetings,
Does the Vine Borer only lay 1 egg at a time?
Cheers,
Rachel
One egg per landing it seems from another video.
Where do you get those syringes?
Any feed store will have them
Can you pick off the eggs when you see them?
Yes!
Stephanie check back of your squash leafs I seen black eggs laid on them in piles
What are the Black Eggs?
Unfortunately they are squash bugs they eat the plant from inside out like its rotten but they eat the plant lay eggs on back of leaves and they hatch rock havoc
Does BT also kill tomatoe worms?
Yes!
