- Also known as pearl or animal glue, hide glue has stood the test of time to prove its effectiveness. Many regard it as outmoded, but here Steve Hay shows that it is easy to use and has many benefits over modern alternatives.
Thank you for a simple explanation
Thank you for an excellent presentation. I have never tried hide glue because I heard it was difficult to use. After this I won't pass on another glue pot at the flea market.
When I saw one I did wonder what it was though. So now I've learned two things.
+Old Sneelock's Workshop good to hear you liked Steve's video :)
First rate. Finally, someone that knows how to use hide glue. All those who I followed used it in a double boiler knew little about it. Excellent
Thank you. I'm repairing an old oak cabinet door frame. One of the stiles had a bit broken off. I steamed open the m&t all around and used modern glue to make the stile as one again. Now I'm fixing to use hide glue to reassemble it all. Scary for me! It's my first.
+BlackSwan912 Fear not, Hide glue is the most forgiving glue out. If you run into any dramas drop me an email www.woodowrkingmasterclass.com.au. Would love to see your results. Cheers Steve
Many thanks!
Lovely stuff
Can i just use a jam jar, put on the lid tight and heat it in cooking pot. The hide glue wont create any gasses so that the air tight jam jar will explode or anything?
Used it for 60 years --made it myself in a factory with limed de haired cowhides =mass produced ---only problem its NOT WATERPROOF --hence its not used much ----but its very strong --in dry climates!
Thank you for this great video! I'm starting to make my own painting canvases and this is what I needed to know. One question. Can you freeze the glue once it's made to prolong its life?
Sandra J Schultz
Yes. Since no one answered this 2 years ago. Lol
is it 100 Celsius for the heat?
thanks but wax melter is better than double boiler
Thanks Steve! Do you have 2 UA-cam accounts, or more? So, you wouldn't keep a batch for more than about 3 weeks? I currently use glue so rarely, that I'd measure out how much to use, and what I didn't use, would not likely be needed in 3 or 4 weeks' time, so... could I let it dry out on a silicone sheet, then roll it up for later, and use it when needed?
+Joshua Hrouda I just watched a video by Patrick, showing how to do just that! Pretty much! Nice!
Hey, where can you actually purchase hide glue these days? In Australia seems to be quite hard to find. Thanks!
Yes it is, an alternative is titebond.com.au/products/liquid-hide/
Hi! Would hide glue work on 2 pieces of wood that were accidentally
sprayed with WD40? Or they have to be cleaned first.. and with what?...
Thanks :)
Acetone, maybe
