Great Showcase and reminder about using what equipment you've already got for other uses. I've used my line 6 hx stomp with other analogue pedals linked to it (as inserts). poor mans outboard!! love it!! i've done a series of tests doing this with a id44, then with an apollo twin. The ua interface has way less latency and captured back a way truer sound, not such a big deal on one element, but on a mix it loses a tone of energy.
I have been using a couple mono versions of the extc for about a year. Fantastic for so many things. One really amazing thing is I have NEVER had hum/buzz problems. Those gremlins that inhabit my live rig pedalboard do not cause any problems with the extc. They are built extremely well.
I have been doing that for a long time. Setup an FX loop using an in and an out from my soundcard (it's got 8 ins and 8 outs, RME). And then, in Reaper, I use Rea Insert - with device latency adjustment, so FX track is aligned properly with the dry track. It works perfectly, very low latency (at 64 smpls) - even when playing guitar in real time, it's not a problem. I made loads of tests, and I never had any problems with phase. (i don't know if what i'm saying is clear enough).

I can do this with Studio One with a plugin called Pipeline XT. I just take a signal out of my 18 channel interface into any analog effect including pedals and back in from the pedal. I have a Boss Gt 10-B hooked up this way. The plugin takes into account any latency from the pedal and automatically corrects it, and I can mix to my heart’s content. Yeah, I've been so much inspired when combining a simple (like almost initial) preset in Vital with TSE B.O.D bass pedal emulation, I got a super-classic Drum'n'Bass bass for free and using only one FX plugin. I highly recommend trying out guitar pedals/plugins on everything else other than guitars - this could sound amazing & unique! For example, adding heavily EQ/compressed/distorted/overdriven voice in parallel could work almost like a saturation/exciter for your vocals. Using hardware pedals with real audio IN/OUT configuration could get tricky, but that might help a lot too. For example, as a mobile dj I've got T.C.Electronic M350 unit, some DBX stereo compressors and even an old Drive Rack PA, but this time I'd rather use plugins for saving my time. But for a dirty unique sound I could go with them too, and this is absolutely unlimited!

Cool box. But why can't you just take the line out of your interface to the input of the pedals and then out of the pedals to a line in on your interface?
You can balance the outputs to the proper line input level for a pedal! This unit of course just makes it so you just send a signal from any track without having to do a set up especially for it! It's all about time, flexibility and convenience

Interesting about 'Virtual Instruments'... I basically tend to construct my material in its basic end-to-end form in 'GarageBand'... only because I'm used to it and can put stuff together relatively quickly. Because of this I kind of always use its virtual pick bass and ramp it up a bit, I always use the virtual drums for running hi-hat and fills BUT then manually programme the kick and snare... plus I quite often just mess about with the guitars too. Stick a few plugins in there and you're rough and ready but away!! 🤓👍
Great video! With this reamp device, can you send a mono signal to the reamp and then come back in stereo? For example, if I wanted to print back in a stereo delay from a pedal?
Indeed, if you can balance the outputs to the proper line input level for a pedal! This unit of course just makes it so you just send a signal from any track without having to do a set up especially for it! It's all about time, flexibility and convenience
@@Producelikeapro I was thinking more in the lines of using software guitar pedals. Also saw a review about the unit that said it has a built-in low pass filter that rolls off at 5K which is strange but maybe works well if you are just using it in a parallel configuration like the examples you were showing in your mix.
It’s about extracting different flavors from gear that you might already own. I have more DAW grit than I could shake a stick at, but none of it sounds like my 18V Colorsound Powerboost clone or Source Audio Multiwave. A lot of us don’t bother using our pedals as outboard recording gear because they don’t all respond well to a straight-up line out signal and end up sounding like butt. Having a nice neat solution for phase, impedance, etc. for stereo realllly makes it easier to get it right and then all of a sudden you have [however many pedals you own] more outboard processors for the price of one interface thingie. You can always automate MIDI-equipped pedals if you still need that much retroactive power over would-be knob twiddles. Watching Ableton play with a couple of Meris pedals is the least-scary look into the future that I’ve ever experienced.
Its the same reason why a lot of guitarists don't use digital pedals. Analogue devices sound different and so a bring different colour. This is especially true of Fuzz, distortion, chorus,Flange and delays. Whether you like that difference is a personal choice but is a good option to have all the same.
cool upload Warren, Liam Howlett used pedals in the mix, deffo with percussion parts...of course, the idea may well have come down from the production guru's ;)
The difference with and without a reamping box would be in the impedance. Can you achieve the same result without such device? For example, by switching the return input after the pedals to “instrument” instead of line?
Are you not able to just do this without the extc? As in just send the output straight to the pedals without the extc in between?? Serious question. Something to do with impedance?
I can imagine having fun with a wah pedal with this....or maybe my EHX B9 or Mel9....and also the HX Stomp seems perfect for that box. You could use its stereo EQs & compressors instead of plugins for a different sound, its new Tape Reel effect, I could go on and on but I think the Stomp is tailor made for the EXTC. So I thought I'd enter the raffle 😆 I can't get every entry because I don't do InstaSpam or Twatter 👍
Hi Warren- great vid! Quick question - if I wanted to use this as a traditional reamp box to run a signal to an amp, then mic the amp and come back into my DAW, is it possible?
I hope it would work with a headphone out. If so I would need to make sure I have monitors on which to listen back. Or I could just run it through my main outputs as I haven't any monitors at the minute. If it doesn't work with the headphone option I would need to upgrade my interface to integrate it.
Looking at picking one of these up and I can't seem to find the answer - can you run the output of the pedals into an amp to reamp? I'm assuming you could because.... why wouldn't that work, but I'd love to know for sure!
Rob, its not a matter of I/O. You can run straight from interface to pedal, no rules!! But the radial box converts the impedance, and from balanced to unbalanced and back. This lets you makes sure that the audio you are running through the pedals is in the sweet spot for the nicest tone!
Have you ever used guitar pedals in your mixes? Let me know below!

@@brianlalor1509 Yes, you will not notice a difference in sound quality between reamp boxes. The prices differ because of practicality and features
@@NikosPage ah yes, that makes sense. The blend control and input/output are pretty useful on this Radial. However, not essential. Thank you Nikos, best wishes
@@NikosPage it's built so well though, I have never had a Radial product break...ever
@@darlenesheffield9835 If you live in the US, yes! Get a Radial. But in Europe and especially Greece with almost no way to acquire that much money from studio time, it's probably best to spend 60€ on a Palmer product. Oh and it's built like a tank too 😇
Interesting about 'Virtual Instruments'... 🤓👍
Warren try a Gamechanger plasma coil pedal! They’re crazy and sound great on a drum buss
I LOVE that company!! Thanks ever so much
Amazing channel mate, love what you do 👍🏻
@@noelblackman7570 Thanks ever so much Noel!
Is the reamp box even necessary? Newer pedals can handle mic levels.
What kind of pedals? And yes it’ll still be necessary to create your own custom chain/unique sound
@@iAmL3J3ND Boss, Strymon, JHS, Earthquaker mostly. Why for custom chains?
Great video! With this reamp device, can you send a mono signal to the reamp and then come back in stereo? For example, if I wanted to print back in a stereo delay from a pedal?
This is cool! Love the creativity!
Hi Martin! Thank you so much!
I do this all the time with my H9 Max
Thanks ever so much for sharing!! Yes, H9 is amazing!
Kinda feel like I can do any of this in the DAW without running outboard. Thoughts?
Good evening Boss! 😎👍
Thanks ever so much Nigel!
The difference with and without a reamping box would be in the impedance. Can you achieve the same result without such device? For example, by switching the return input after the pedals to “instrument” instead of line?
Damn I’m gonna buy this and use it with my Eventide TimeFactor and Space
Awesome! you can do it with TwoNotes products as well, like the Torpedo Reload.
Are you not able to just do this without the extc? As in just send the output straight to the pedals without the extc in between??
Serious question. Something to do with impedance?
I use a Ventris dual reverb on all my tracks, very nice pedal I recommend it.
Do you use this unit to mix the Ventris in? How do you incorporate it in your mix?
I can imagine having fun with a wah pedal with this....or maybe my EHX B9 or Mel9....and also the HX Stomp seems perfect for that box. You could use its stereo EQs & compressors instead of plugins for a different sound, its new Tape Reel effect, I could go on and on but I think the Stomp is tailor made for the EXTC. So I thought I'd enter the raffle 😆
I can't get every entry because I don't do InstaSpam or Twatter 👍
You might want to try some jhs pedals for drums! And don't forget Tchad Blake's Sansamp method for drums as well!
I always liked this idea but never recorded it because I can always hear too much extra noise/hum/crackling introduced?
Hi Warren- great vid! Quick question - if I wanted to use this as a traditional reamp box to run a signal to an amp, then mic the amp and come back into my DAW, is it possible?
What's the minimum standard of little cables between pedals you guys would use? I just want a recommendation if you needed to buy 9 or 10. thanks!
Is there much difference from this and using their re-amp box into a di-box?
Maybe a stupid question but: if it's a totally wet signal, couldn't you just have connected the pedals directly to the outs without the XTC?
I hope it would work with a headphone out. If so I would need to make sure I have monitors on which to listen back. Or I could just run it through my main outputs as I haven't any monitors at the minute. If it doesn't work with the headphone option I would need to upgrade my interface to integrate it.
Looking at picking one of these up and I can't seem to find the answer - can you run the output of the pedals into an amp to reamp? I'm assuming you could because.... why wouldn't that work, but I'd love to know for sure!
hi Warren, try the Nux mg300 pedal or the Boss 001 for guitars, you can reamp thru the pedal via usb, its futuristic, that will be great content.
We all know what you really need to do now.
BOSS METAL ZONE!
Haha Agreed! Thanks ever so much!
Those electro- harmonics pedals are awesome. B9, C9 Mel 9.Their bass Machine emulates P Basses, upright ect... Gonna check out the clone theory.
Does one “need” this box to IO some pedals in to a mix if ones interface has enough IO?
Rob, its not a matter of I/O. You can run straight from interface to pedal, no rules!! But the radial box converts the impedance, and from balanced to unbalanced and back. This lets you makes sure that the audio you are running through the pedals is in the sweet spot for the nicest tone!
Is there any difference between doing this with a reamp box back into a D.I?
Besides the cool added features like stereo and blend obviously...
I really wish I could get mine to work like this. I'm so defeated.
What happens if you just run the audio into the guitar pedal without the EXTC? Can it damage the pedal?
