I’m an adult violin student. I’ve also been told by a pain doctor that I have hyper-mobile hands and wrists. I have trouble keeping my 4th finger low enough (I like to say it’s the English in me, based on lifting the pinky when drinking tea, etc.). It likes to sorta lock more (not stayed curled like my other fingers).
this was really helpful thank you! recently I've been having pain in my fingers and wrist when playing piano and I did the Brighton test and most of my joints are hyper mobile. I'm going to do these exercises regularly now
I'm a pianist and I've been struggling with this as well! Especially my pinky is really weak and always locking when I'm practicing.... Have you guys found out anything specifically related to practicing and playing your instrument with hypermobile hands? I would really appreciate anything that could help!!
My fingers are double jointed and giving me a lot trouble when doing vibrato on the violin or even shifting the notes. My grip on my bow is not steady at all. So troublesome. Even when i try to hold properly chopsticks. I really hope that i can strengthen my joints! Thanks for sharing this video!
Yes please more videos on hypermobility! I'm a new grad OT who just started working at a PT clinic (as the first and only OT) specializing in connective tissue disorders. Would love more of your wisdom!
I have double jointed fingers in conjunction with hemiplegia. It's so difficult to get any coordinated movement to the fingers on my right hand. When I was younger I didn't care too much and never kept up with my OT treatments. I kick myself everyday because of it. Hopefully these little tips can help me gain some mobility and dexterity to my right hand. I essentially never use my right hand because of how little coordination I have in it, but at almost 30 years old I'm really trying to gain control over my insecurities. Thank you for these videos.
this was actually very helpful I was messing around with my hands and fingers knowing I am like this and why I sometimes hurt in my fingers I wanted to look it up I found this video and after watching it I realized thats why my hands would always tire out or hurt really bad after holding a pencil or pen for long periods of time thank you for this educational video and explaining possible help and solutions to help (ps I am quite young and ive known I can do this with my hands for a while)
i knew i had very bendy fingers and it is a bit annoying for writing but i noticed that it only really started to bother me when i started to learn the bass, when i need to put downward force and my fingers kept bending and it was unconfortable because i couldnt hold the note
I used to love writing on paper (i want to become a writer) but my fingers are quite hypermobile and my index finger hurts a lot when i write for a long time. It honestly sucks because I don't like writing on the computer
I have hypermobile EDS and I was just diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Yay me. 😂 Your channel has been such a godsend. I'm a pianist and I've been super-concerned about how all of this RA stuff is going to affect my ability to keep playing my instrument.
Very helpful. Please post more exercises for my EDS fingers. I love to embroider but my hands protest. Is it possible to strengthen my 58 year old hands so that they’ll hold for such a distressing hobby? I’m feeling hopeful!
Ever since middle school my hands would get fatigued writing or gripping objectss. I have the constant urge to pop my knuckes or else i feel like my hand gets weaker which gets annoying when doing normal task like driving. Sometimes my fingers extend too much when i pick up something heavy and it would hurt a lot or jam. Might affect me in the career im choosing and hobbies like using tools and pressing buttons
I never knew this was an actual issue. All my fingers bend more. My left hand, index finger is the only one that really has ever given me an issue. My finger gets stuck overextended and I have to pop it back. The right index does sometimes too but not as often. I tried asking a doctor about it this week and was told it’s trigger fingers. Except mine gets locked when it’s straight, and I didn’t know you could have trigger finger in all of them.
I've been wanting to learn how to play guitar, but I know from my past that I had issues with finger strength when playing violin. My pinky would always flatten out when I tried to reach for higher notes. Some videos recommended using a wooden clothespin to strengthen the muscles, but the resistance is too much for me to use them effectively. The foam definitely seems like a great way to build up to that.
Clothespin exercise for the small finger?! That is way too much resistance and not a very effective exercise in my opinion. You are right in choosing other exercises.
Thank you for mentioning this, especially from a musician’s perspective! I’m a violinist and trying to solve some bow arm wrist stiffness that may be caused by my double-jointed thumbs (basically my wrist stiffens to try to compensate for lack of stability in the base thumb joint). I’ve never heard anyone in music talk about these physical issues, and if I bring it up they don’t really have any insight. Glad I am learning some useful stuff here.
Thanks for posting this!! I'm a violinist and I need some help with this. Can that first exercise be applied to other fingers, as well? Specifically, I need help with my pinky.
Verry late to this video. I’m in show choir and my second joint on my fingers lock backwards when doing anything with my hands. In pictures, though, my hands look out of place because my fingers look bent-but I can’t keep them straight. I’m on a mission to train them to let me extend my fingers without the joint locking.
@@VirtualHandCare will wearing the braces help with strengthening the weak joint(s)? As a pianist (and violinist), I know it is very important to have strong fingers for these instruments.
@@michellegawith8067 Wearing braces do not 'strengthen' the joints. But they do provide external stability and support when the joints are hypermobile.
all my life i wanted to learn how to play a guitar and when i finally bought one i learned that i cant play it because of my all double jointed fingers i cant hit the strings like a normal person... I'm so sad about this but yeah life goes on
I’m double jointed and my fingers tend to lock frequently.. but I still managed to teach myself guitar and it’s in fact helped even, with strengthening my joints because it sort of forces you to become mindful
can someone help me?? i cant touch my thumb to my wrist but i can do things which double jointed people can do but its only on my left arm and on that same arm im able to somehow like crack my upperarms?? i dont know how to name it but like i can easily control my upperarms bones like i have 2 bones there and i feel like moving them out of place then back into place
Im double jointed in 2 of my fingers and both of my knees from previous injuries, i broke both of my fingers when i was 10 and dislocated my knees when i was 8 by running into a stone shed and smacking my knees against it 😅😅 (Also my wrist i fractured it and now im double jointed in one of my wrists)
Having these pregnant looking bended fingers really affects my life especially in work, i easily get stiffed using my laptop's touchpad :( it is a little painful but super frustrating. I would always has to use a mouse which is really inconvenient and not be as efficient as always compare to using touchpad gestures.
I'm have hypermobility in left hands only I'm know that ..really thanks very match I'm love you from Egypt 🇪🇬 you told me what I need and what I'm do thanks doctor
raw fruit juice detox, it's connective tissue disorder, which can be fixed by alkalizing and detoxing the body. watch dr. Robert Morse and John Rose, take care
The scale is no good for other joints it only does certain ones. I saw a specialist and she didn't like the scale. On the scale I am 4 of 9 however I have hypermobile in 8 out of 10 fingers and both knees with osteoarthritis also in both knees.
Exactly. I can’t touch the floor without bending my knees due to nerve tension (I think?), but I’ve been able to sublux my shoulders at will since elementary 😅 I think it’s good as a “ruling things in” condition, not out. Like if someone’s beighton score is 7, it’s probably not needed to count all the other joints at that point lol

what would you recommend for guitarists? Besides exercise my fingers lock out if I play too fast but I need something that keeps my fingers mobile.
my thumb is double jointed and i cant stop doing it
Were you demonstrating the splint on your thumb backwards on purpose @8:25, or was that just fidgeting?
The Oval 8 can be used in multiple ways. It really depends on what type of support your joint needs. I was just showing 1 direction in the video.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is, in truth, far from rare. It's just rarely diagnosed. And it's _not_ autoimmune. It's genetic. "Double jointed" is a myth.
I don’t think I’m double jointed but when I bend my the left finger next to my thumb and try to move it, it sort of jolts to the finger next to it.
