HISTORY
The Cross Daggers is a Grade II listed former public house in Woodhouse, Sheffield, England.
The building features a date stone above the door which states that it was built in 1658 as well as the initials TGN, which is said to have stood for Thomas Godfrey Newbould, a prominent Quaker and landlord. The building overlooks the village stocks as well as the cross.
The cross was erected in 1775 and the sundial and weather vane was added in 1826.
Following the Reformation, Woodhouse became in the early 1600s a stronghold of non-conformity with the growth of the Quaker movement.
Woodhouse grew quickly into a mining community with the opening of a number of mines within commuting distance. The village expanded considerably to accommodate the pit workers. Spa Lane, Back Lane and Sheffield Road quickly wound a new and expansive network of pit houses, ensuring that Woodhouse would become a 'pit village'.
Since the decimation of the coal mining industry in the 1980s by the Tory Government, Woodhouse has slowly declined and is now a struggling suburb and housing estate in the south-east of Sheffield.

I like walking in quiet streets! Thanks for interesting walk! Be well!👍🚶🚶🚶
Thanks for watching x
This video includes captions / subtitles in Russian. I used Google Translate. Could you please tell me if the Russian is good to read. Thanks x
God Woodhouse has changed so much. It is almost unrecognisable, Cross Daggers, Allen Lee’s, Craig’s Transport all the old favourite gone.
Zap these video are so nice to watch. I sat here watching your videos on my smart tv. I like those double buses and the houses are built with nice concrete blocks. I miss the uk when i watch your videos. Keep up the good work my friend.💟👍
Many thanks for your support. Yes, there are some nice buildings in Woodhouse, but recently it is a bit run down 🙁 I will be uploading a new video in a couple of days, showing the city centre 👍
@@Zaptabby Great no problem my friend. You got my support always.💟👍
Thank you, I was very interested! I liked the modesty of the memorial to those who fell during the war.
Special thanks for the subtitles !!!
Thanks for watching 😀
Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for watching. Glad you liked it. This was just a test with the sound and subtitles 👍
@@Zaptabby If to be honest, I am an old fan of an old TV-show - "Jeeves and Wooster" series. And some views of this video looks like in a couple episodes of it
@@2bdriving300 Really? Interesting. I have heard of this programme but never watched it. Do you know which episodes this looks like?
@@Zaptabby Sorry, I'm not exactly sure, but possible it is season 2 episodes 3-4
@@2bdriving300 Thanks. I am intrigued, I’ll check it out.
i used to live and work in woodhouse , lived up spa lane , worked in the supermarket when it was macmarket ( macfisheries ) in the 70s !
Thanks for watching. Right, I can’t really remember this as I was around five at this time. Where about in Woodhouse?
It was a bit strange to see cars and buses driving on the left side of the road, but then I remembered that this is England! )))) I liked the route, everything looks very neat and decent: houses, streets, shops. And thanks for the Russian subtitles!
Glad you liked this little video. I am planning to go into Sheffield city centre. Some interesting things you might like 👍
@@Zaptabby Have a great trip!
What time of day was this walk?
Hello, thanks for watching. It was 7am. If you put on subtitles (CC) there is some info on this 👍
When I was a child this was such a lovely place to live, we would visit my Aunty Betty and it was like going to the countryside for the day. So sad to see it looking so run down.
Thanks for the comment. Yes it is very sad. Somehow it looks far worse on video. I didn’t realise how decimated this area is until I looked back at this video.
Good place to live, probably
