Barry, the thump causes the lid to flex enough so that the air can get into the jar. This equalises the pressure between the inside of the jar and the open air and the jar is easier to open.
If the jam jar has no air inside it the atmosphere is pressing the lid on with around 50kg of force.

The jar lid whacking one is basically what we would do back in the day, except we'd rap the lid on the edge of a worktop to break the seal (though occasionally broke the jar too!!!), probably frowned upon though if said worktop was an expensive one versus the cheap stuff from MFI or B&Q that we had... :P

That corn spinner thingy is also useful to put butter on it while still hot. Just push it on top of your butter block and spin.
Also, would work a bit better if you straightened out the fork so the axis of the whole thing was aligned in the middle.

Hey Baz, love tthese hacks (yes, even the dangerous ones! lol)
Slight bit of useless knowlede; that ring of numbers on your drill is not speed control, it's a torque limiting clutch so you don't over-tighten screws :D useful if you're gonna speed-eat corn on a drill (like the video you mentioned lol)

To open a jar get a spoon and place it under the lid in the gap between the glass and give it a pry. It should release the pressure with a pop and be super easy to open. Not sure if you've tried it but it is the easiest way

Also mix some chilli powder (of whatever hotness you personally like) and salt together, cut a lime in half, dip the cut face into the salt mixture and then rub all over the charrer corn. Takes any over-charred/burnt bits off and leaves an amazingly flavoured grilled corn!

Just started watching this video and had to comment since I’ve seen you address this with several gadgets or hacks over the years…
I use the coke/beer bottle opener part of my standard/cheap hand held can opener to pop the seal on jars that are hard to open. It’s that little “hook” part that is on most cheap hand held can openers and has worked every time! I’ve found just popping the seal makes the jar easy to open! Most times it looks like I’ve bent the lid but they always seem to reseal just fine! Feel free to try this hack on your channel, I’m sure I’m not the first, nor will I bee the last to open jars this way!

On opening a jar, I just tap the edge of the lid with the handle of a butter knife, thus breaking the seal. Grilled corn. Either parboil corn first then it takes a shorter time on the BBQ or coat in a little EVOO and cook in air fryer. Steamer, well my hubby picked up a 3 tier electric one at a thrift shop for me a couple years ago and I still don't use it. Can do 24 hard boiled eggs in it also, but never had that big of a party to make 48 deviled egg halves.
