I moved to Colorado a few years ago and The Caption’s videos keep me from terminal home sickness.
Sherman Hemsley was from South Philly also there’s a three story across from that church that’s been in my family for 70yrs.
Whatchoo mean Weasy? George Jefferson lived in the same building as H.L. Whittendale on the East Side of New York citjy! Nowhere near Philly. You crazy! Probably a honkey too! 🤣
You probably can't tell but I love that show. All in the Family too. I'm old. 😫

Hey Philly Captain, great scoot video..Yes, Univ City is part of West Phila..Enjoyed seeing the Routes 10/ 15 trolley, Septa train, Phila Zoo and more..Tootles
If you're just sitting on the street corner killing time the trolley seems to come by one after another right away, but if you're waiting for one they seem to take forever.
You asked about university city and West Philadelphia. University city is considered part of West Philadelphia . It got its name due to the expansion of the university of Pennsylvania and Drexel University as well as the research facilities that developed around the schools. West Philadelphia in general is referred to any area west of Schuylkill river to the end of the city where it meets Delaware County. There are sections of West Philadelphia that do have neighborhood names such as Cobbs Creek, Overbrook, Powelton and others. As you showed in the video we are proud to still have trolley cars for public transportation serving us locally as well as getting us to Center City. I grew up there and now live in Delaware County but still remember good times growing up there.
I've been wanting to visit John Coltrane House for years but since it is not in a great neighborhood, I have been putting it off. I'm glad I was able to finally 'see' it. Thank you!
As a kid, I was that doctor's paperboy delivering the Philadelphia Bulletin newspaper. I never realized that he was such a cruel person.
That theme song for Amen was the best❤ I used dance around like a lunatic to that song when I was a kid😆
Great scoot Captain. That mural was absolutely beautiful. 🇬🇧
Awesome video
Just moved here a week ago, love watching these videos and seeing new spots to explore!
Here we areeeeeee
I am originally from West Philly, more specifically Overbrook Park. I lived right behind the City Line Ave shopping center till 1979.
You left real early huh?
@@greggsiano5920shoutout from Chester pa
Hey from central Iowa. Thanks for your work! I dig adventuring via video because I'll never go there in this lifetime. ;)
Great Video Philly Captain...please do more touring around videos. By the way do you remember Aquarama? It was something like a small SeaWorld only in Philly.....
330 N 41st street is $340k
That’s insane
@@greggsiano5920in a good way or bad way?
Rode the 15 trolley yesterday, and some people remembered, and some people did not, how to open the exit doors. You step down the steps. I can remember when Philly was filled with trolleys, and the trolleys had a driver and a guy who took your fare when you exited. My Dad could remember when families would charter trolleys for funerals. They'd load the coffin on.
The sky looks very pretty.
Well, at least you can get to the Philadelphia Zoo without driving, hypothetically. There's no way to get to Six Flags without driving.
Another great informative tour of Philly, Captain!
Yo Cuz, Thanks for another History lesson ! ECW !
My grandmother grew up on Ludlow Street in the 30s-40s.
When we visited my uncle on Sunday we would take him to Clark park and there was this lady who had a food truck cart that sold crabbian food and I remember I used to get it all the time and it was really good. The food cart unfortunately no longer was there on Sundays. The lady was really nice you could get a huge platter of chicken, rice and crabbian style vegetable for like 12 buck. Her name was Massey I believe.
I lived at 43 and Walnut. It gets pretty hood past 45 and toward Market. Market gets hood around 40th or it used to anyway
Facts
This is not true anymore I’m not sure when the last time you have been here but it’s heavily gentrified in S of market into cobbs creek and well past 45th you do know cedar park runs to 52nd street and also it’s changing beyond 52 street south of walnut.
I used to live in University city. 35th and Hamilton.
Loved that area. "Powelton Village" I think is what the neighborhood was called.
We moved to Ohio in 2016. If we ever move back, we definitely will go back to that area.
Great video!!!! I'm a resident of West Philly (OverBrook section) and didn't know these facts!!!!! Thank You!!!❤❤❤
You should do a zoo video.. a walk around and show the zoo.. they are so much fun
That's a weird 3 story bldg across the street from the church. It looks so funny around all those other bldgs. I can imagine what it looks like inside.
we call east philly new jersey! I lived in West Philly until about three years ago. Now I’m in the county I love Philly but I don’t really want to go back to living in the city. Thanks for doing my part of town.
I remember the Grand old Mansions, there in the early 70's
Enjoyed this video and would like to see more. I spent most of my youth in North Philly and didn't venture into West Philly unless I was on the El. Give us more West and South Philly because I've seen enough of K & A and the surroundings. Love your posts>
Coltrane house! I learn something new everyday! thank you Philly Captain Great work!!
My uncle used to live in a group home before he passed away on Springfield ave and every Sunday me and my family would visit him. The traffic on the schuylkill expressway is absolutely the worst especially coming home you got all those people in the left lane backed up going west to valley forge.
Coltranes cousin Mary owned the house. The very one he honored with his famous song "Cousin Mary"
I live in West Philly (near Clark Park). It's about friggin' time you came to my neighborhood!!!
We say going down north being from west
The block where the John Coltrane house is used to have a mostly intact row of houses.
Loved Amen! Thanks Cap!
Bitch's Brew by Miles Davis is my favorite Miles Davis album oh btw congrats on hitting 51k Cuz 🎉🎉🎉
#Philly👍
love all the murals
West Philadelphia we love our trolleys! 10,11,34,36❤
yes university city is a section of west philly
I usually watch and don’t comment, but when you went by Dwight barbecue, it’s been there forever and the food is good. Also the church, the United House of prayer for all people in these churches they always have a cafeteria that is open to the public with great soul food.I am south Philly, born and raised
ive been to that "squat house" all kinds of bands etc, they did rap shows there etc
I went to high school in West Philadelphia. Up until the mid/late 1960s to about 1971 Powellton Village was like the Garden District of New Orleans. Then Drexel university expanded an destroyed the village and West Powellton. My friends and all the local’s call University City,Disneyland on the Schuylkill. As for Frank Furness I lived in a Furness row row house,in Center City.
I need to see a Public Urination concert.
There are clips on my UA-cam channel

Family Guy (Cleveland) did a riff on the intro to "Amen".
Hey man, I grew up at West Philadelphia specifically 58th & Master. University City is a section of 3 universities & it technically it is as a generalization area
All them people staying in the streets in Kensington I have so many places in Philly to go when Kensington is no longer an option.
Cap can we expect any larger sizes for your merch? Need em big and loose!
What size are you looking for?
The Church is Mt. Pisgah AME Rev. Broadnax is the Pastor and yes U City is part of WP🙄
Hey CaP-N I made it to let's go over this bridge. you can't feel how are you are.
GOo TRAIN DORKS GOO0ooo0
Yes, technically UCity is part of West Phillly. Back in the day UCity used to be much smaller but thru gentrification it has spread deeper into West Philly. I think that is a good thing because thru gentrification comes nice stores and businesses. Crime also goes down as property values rise. I wish that gentrification would come to my area. I would love to have a Starbucks and a Wawa within walking distance.
When you go to the other side of that bridge you are no longer in West Philly. You are now in a part of North Philly called Strawberry Mansion. That is where the Coltrane house is at.
University City is in West Philly
I need some 💰, so I can get out of this Hillbilly hillbilly State I live in so I can come up & visit Philly. Great big city with a lot of interesting places to see.
If you ever want to come out to West Philly/University City along Baltimore Ave, hit me up!
I'd say 40th and up(south) is west Philly. University city has expanded up to 52nd but is still technically west Philly, which on a map is really south Philly. South Philly is just south of Center city but north of west Philly. I live in Roxborough which is actually west Philly. Norf Philly is really the north east.
11:13 One thing about Philadelphians is they love anything OLD SCHOOL PHILLY especially that trolley that's modernized. 👍
My old stomping grounds
My uncle lives in university city for 30 years and he says it is west philly
Thelma made the show , Amen . 🎉
Thanks for checking JC house but missed Lee Morgan's House.
I missed it because I don’t know who he is lol.
Lee Morgan the jazz trumpeter
I thought you were going to mention H.H. Holmes, but I think he was more in South Philly but I could be wrong.
Yo, U city is def west Philly!
you started in the black bottom or powelton village and ended up almost at parkside. You went through about 3 or 4 neighborhoods friend. UC starts at Market street technically...you travelled powelton village to Belmont and Girard, then parkside...to the zoo then over to strawberry mansion which is north philly...
not trolley subway surface vehicle...for a trolley see route 15
University City was West Philly until the Colleges got together and decided that they weren't West Philly for marketing reasons!
That's the bottoms of Parkside
Everything west of the Schuylkill River is west or Southwest Philadelphia
UC is west Philly and that house is off market and was listed for $350k
University City is a part of West Philadelphia.
Cool looking building roman numeral date: 1895
YO MA! He’s saying all people named Kermit are killers
Plz don’t die
Cap is good with yhe bridge? Oh...nope. thanks for showing us Coltranes house!!!! I love hearing you talk about Monk and Miles
West Philadelphia= Overbrook, Wynnfield, Wynnfield heights, Mantua, Cobbs Creek, Cedar Park, University City, Haddington, Powelton, Mill Creek. There is plenty of parking all over west Philadelphia it’s a beautiful part of Philadelphia it’s urban and suburban all at the same time the parks the food the programs it’s great! So many trees close to lower montco and Delco and the Philadelphia international airport and south NJ.
And can’t forget about access to top medical facilities such as chop u Penn and mainline health (lankenau medical center) Penn presby…etc
infamous or notorious would be the words for dr. gosnell. both words denote negative quality.
Yes part of university is west Philadelphia
West Philly means WEST of the Schuylkill River
nah WEST Philly means west of 46th St (Uni City)
Trolley
Malcolm X changed his name to El
Hajj Malik El Shabazz
Crazy
Man I'm telling you "you are the realest of Philly you just don't give a fukk I like that about you
Sorry but the first zoo is in bridgeston nj
And they say they don't ruin neighborhoods Cancer to society
University city is def West philly. Lived around 34th and powelton for a short bit and thats "the bottom" of west philly
I avoid west philly, southwest philly and north philly.
U better avoid south Philly too
@TheLastDragon1985 south Philly is hit or miss. A few blocks are dangerous and the next few are fine.
It's not a trackless trolley
15:49 me either Captin and I love that new buildings are being built but I don’t like the lack of character in the architectural designs; no corbels, window surround mantle, arches at least etc. It screams laziness and lack of creativity. Also they keep making the windows smaller and smaller it’s annoying it looks like a luxury prison 😂 all you need is the residents to tap on the window when you walk by.
It is West Philly
I think the new births (if I read correctly think it’s a gyn ov again but whatever the people)bring new memories to the area …and the new baby angels are there to protect the old baby souls….. you have to fix the future with creating new memories (even on old spaces)..🙏🌼.. evil cannot ruin everything!
Being a Jazz musician, do you think John Coltrane smoked Jazz cigarettes? 🤔
You sound like you’re from Pittsburgh
Is it because you saw some guys who were up to no good, start making trouble in the neighborhood? 😉
I disagree with you about Thelma. But we are entitled to our own opinions 😊
what a dump!
Drexel University
I went to the most prestigious medical school in Philadelphia and I clear of Philadelphia. Southwest is a bit better.
Camden NJ is East Philly. But it's Camden so nobody acknowledges that.
Even worse, it’s actually New Jersey
No one in their right mind who lives in Philly willingly goes west of University City (46th St). It just ain't worth it.
West Philadelphia does have some rundown areas but in general has been improving over the years. Some row homes now cost in excess of $150,000.00. People like the area because it is convent to get around the city as well as to the airport, 30th Street Station or the suburbs.
@@johnchambers8528 True. It is gentrifying. Helps there's both Drexel and Penn. Getting a $150K rowhouse that will be worth $300K in 10 years after the universities build up the community is a legit bet. It's also like buying an acre of the North Pole for $10 right now but all the penguins have guns!
@@johnchambers8528bingo. Im from DC but lived off Cobbs Creek - I loved being less than 10 from 30th St or the Airport. Philly people (except for the foodies) are just lazy af and scared to leave their own neighborhood - a lot of it being racial too. If you like to eat good you gonna explore all four corners of that great city and West Arguably has the best cheap eats in Philly. And it’s close to the BEST cheesteak Jawn. Which is NOT in Philly proper -‘Docs Deli in Landsdowne in Delco is the best in the whole area. But investor wise- WP is where it’s at
@@JimBrownski Thanks for your comment. I moved from West Philadelphia to eastern Delaware County. So I could check out Docs Deli and their cheese steak. As you noted there are many good relatively low cost places to eat in West Philadelphia and there are also many good places in eastern Delaware County where you can get a good cheese stake or hoggies as well as sit down dining spots. You need to explore and try new places to find the best food outlets.
@@johnchambers8528some rowhome costs almost 1 million and some well over 350k cobbs creek homes are selling well over 350k some going for 4-8 hundred K and some are still very cheap
