I always thought that, as a design, the devs kinda treated the L5 Reisig more like an attack helicopter aesthetically than a tank. Everything about it screams "can be useful if you don't expect to actually get hit", and the way the cannons are loaded is a lot more similar to how crews load 20mms on modern fighter jets and helicopters. The same goes for its ability to squat. It's kinda like how Apaches are expected to dip just above and then below terrain. L5 Reisig is a fire support vehicle, intended to kill a whole lot of infantry and then use its shields to survive ambush and then squat and survive. Not very practical, but it does kinda make sense, at least aesthetically.
To the nekomata's credit, a casemate design makes WAY more sense on a hover tank than on a tracked vehicle. Casemate designs eliminate the substantial added weight (especially important on a hover tank) and mechanical failure points that a turret adds, substantially reduce the height of the vehicle, as well as allow for much more effective distribution of armor for its weight since you can invest almost all of it on the front face of the vehicle, and it makes combining crew positions a bit more sensible since the gun's always facing the same direction as the driver. Meanwhile, a hover tank's ability to move in any direction independent of its facing eliminates the most significant drawback of a casemate design- the Nekomata can still effectively engage while maneuvering. That doesn't necessarily mean the nekomata's a good design, but for a hover tank, it's actually pretty good. Its main issues are really just the offset cannon and poor handling.

honestly a fusion reactor would make sense as we are close to making right now meaning that in 2142 they're probably severely scaled down and they can't melt down like conventional reactors also they don't create any nuclear waste
There's a slight radioactive element to fusion as well, even if it's near-negligible compared to fission. And Titans are fusion-powered, no? What iffs me more is justifying fusion power for 50ish tonne combat vehicles and still have problems facing an ice age.
@@filipw8050 Kinda my point. Even getting the materials to make the aforementioned heaters and their spare parts ought to be fairly trivial. So...resource war for nuclear reactor bits?
“Mantlets are made small for maximum armour protection and weight” I guess Stalin missed the memo (Kv-1, Kv-2, T-34/85, Is-2, Is-1, *all t-34s before 85*)
In WWII mobility of fire wasnt considered as important yet (US beg to differ with their stabilizers here), thus speed of gun elevation was considered secondary to ensuring decent armor protection, especially against MG bullets jamming between the moving parts or entering the tank via odd angled ricochets. Thats why it wasnt such a big issue with tanks like Pz III, Panther and Tiger I that their entire turret front effectively was just the gun mantlet. Also, even today its not written in stone that the mantlet must only be a tiny piece of moving plate barely large enough to fit the main gun, coax and in some cases the gun sight (in some cases thats seperated into a doghouse), though the main reason for that is that as a moving part, its difficult to apply much protection to it without making it interfere with the ability to still move, unbalancing the gun, etc. which is why on an M1 Abrams the mantlet is actually a fairly thin piece of armor only, mainly relying on people just not hitting it due to size, and even if they do, they will likely only disable the gun. On the other hand, Leopard 2 has a fairly wide mantlet with the same array of composite armor as the rest of the turret front, meaning that there is no detriment in protection there, and mobility of fire is still excellent, with the gun being fully stabilized and elevating absolutely rapidly. The extra mass of the armor doesnt seem to cause much issue there, because being close to the elevation trunnion anyway it doesnt require much extra force due to lack of leverage anyway.
@@mcnuffin1208 Nope, they all had mantlets. A gun mantlet is a piece of armor that elevates along with the gun and covers the opening it protrudes from, ideally in all elevations, and prevents shots from entering. KV-2 is the only one on the list where the entire gun mount is very visibly bolted onto the outside (at least on the 1939 turret, the 1940 turret is more similar to the KV-1 turret, but upscaled in height to the same size as the 1939 turret), but thats not a mantlet, thats just the gun mount. All other tanks listed, KV-1, IS-1 and 2, T-34s of all variants, still had gun mantlets, but their guns were small enough that they could be swapped out without any external bolts just by going through the hole in the turret front (the mantlet would stay attached to the gun), as any points affixing it would be internal. This also means that the mantlet could be fitted more smoothly into the shape of the turret, which is probably why you made that assumption.
what i loved about the mechs, and everything in 2142 in gerneral, was that they feel grounded. you take a quick look at it and, yeah this looks like it would be possible especially the EUs stuff, with their sharp edges and corners and i still want a SCAR 11 or Baur HAR
So here's a fun story! I used this video for reference when 3D-printing and painting a huge L5 Riesig. I spent months studying this thing... and now it turns out, my new colleague is *the guy* who designed it! I asked about how you get into it - while I forgot to ask about the specifics, it seems the top is designed to fold open and reveal the interior. I think the L5 could crouch pretty low, so maybe you climb in that way? That, or a step-stool 😅
Absolutely love seeing 2142 get more recognition anywhere, so great pick and great video! Another interesting vehicle to look out might have been the T36 Hachimoto from the Northern Strike maps, it's a hovercraft FAV that fires TV Missiles. Also, any thoughts on the HT-95 Levkov in Battlefield 4, as It's supposed to be the predecessor of the Nekomata?
U even played latest bf4 DLC? It's screaming about bf2142, there's blueprints of mechs, goliath, etc, read wiki, bf4 kinda predecessor to bf2142 story, especially WITH DLC's technology, vehicles, etc....and PAC logo
When the walkers aren't manned they retract into an idle pose, the L5 may have a better time of reloading when it's stood up. Also find it curious you covered the tanks' MG turret but not the walkers' AA components... or looked at the precursors to these in BF4's "Final Stand".
I would assume that by 2100 you would have working Fusion, not fission reactors. and more to the point, these fusion reactors would be about the size of a V-8 engine. Fusion reactors immediately lose containment and thus temperature containment and control and just cool instantly. This it the opposite of "Aliens" where the fusion reactor explodes like Castle Bravo. Due to long standing rules concerning any form of nuclear power, the radiation emblem is used. Plus when the game"2142" was made common knowledge about Nuclear fusion was not available. Nor was information on weapons we don't fret much about being in the future like LAWs, LASERs, and advanced robotics.
I feel like some of the design faults are a result of the ongoing resource wars, simply put they couldn't afford to make it better because that would take time and materials they weren't willing to spare.
"manlets are made as small as possible for maximum armor protection while also keeping the weight down" "having a massive manlet would make it very weak and also slow to elevate"
EA said that conventional bullets have better physicality for the combat versus energy weapons. Judging by the sounds and muzzle flash, they're probably using a futuristic propellent of sorts (my guess is plasma?), except for the EU's classic smokeless cartridge revolver.
My fav part is where he gripes a tank cannot be controlled by one person only, as he sits there with a controller in hand, scoring kills in a _hover-tank._
I showed this video to our curator that takes care of our armored vehicles. He really enjoys your series. In case you ever need more material...Other tanks/walkers you can look at - The Geth Walker and Mako Tank from the Mess Effect Series - Warhammer 40k has tones of walkers (Tau, Eldar, Orks, Impreium all use walkers) - The walkers from Iron Harvest - The vehicles from Planetside 2 (they also have some powersuits) - The Walkers from HAWKEN (they are take a different approach to walkers. Instead of being slow lumbering mechs, they are actually quick and nimble). - The vehicles from the starcraft series. Another idea is to take a popular video game series where a real historical or modern tank is used in the game, and cover what is right and wrong in the game. You have already been kind of doing this in some of your videos. Lastly, maybe you can make a video of what would be the most practical and ideal walker. Or maybe top 10 most practical vehicles you have covered. I know top 10 videos are rather over done, but I am just spitting out ideas. Anyway, keep up the great work! I work at a museum storage facility, and I like to listen to your vidoes as I work.
From memory the way _to get into a Riesig_ is to sprint for it as soon as the match starts, unless you're PAC. Then you keep spamming EMP Nades and run up next to it, making the pilot think you're about to C4 it. And when they bail out you jump in and use its guns on them.
On the L5 I believe you could load and unload the belt boxes from the inside of the turret and perhaps the straps are made of a metal of some kind. Still wouldn't explain why there isn't armor covering the ammo boxes though. As for the MG on the A8, i believe that the belt could be fed through the turret if you compressed it down enough, however it would make reloading unwieldy.
I miss playing BF2 and BF2142 back when Project Revive was still in operation. But then EA threatened them with legal action so they had to shut it all down. The time that Project Revive was in operation were the happiest years of my life. There’s actually a video that BlueDrake42 did on the BF2142 that has me playing with him.
Hey Spooks I’m curious to what kind of future tank you’d like to see. If you want I can draw up something with specifications you give me. I’ll send you some examples of what I can do via direct message if you want
I wouldn't really count the crew section for the tanks. It would most likely be more than 1 person in the tank but for gameplay reasons reduced it down to one driver and a gunner like in BF3 & 4.
planetside 2 is a big one. Vanguard looks like a good tank just lacking a coaxial mg and its only crewed by one person. Also 150mm gun is overkill but thats what I like in my tanks oorah
Churchson I think the vanguard is supposed to have two 20mm coaxial guns (It had them in the original Planetside) and there are ports on the turret model where they would be. They just don’t appear in-game as they would be a nightmare to balance for.
Please tell me you understand that the whole single-crew, lack of coaxial mg, low speed, useless futuristic ERA on the tank's side, lack of stabilizer, and gun recoil are all done purely for game balancing reasons and have nothing to do with their designs right?
I actually think they could've put proper microreactors in the mechs, especially with 120 years to play, I think that downsizing nuclear power would not be too difficult, given that there are airlift-capable reactors (vSMR) being conceptualized already. Plus, those mechs need what? Some 1500kW of power? Not that difficult to cool off, really, the cold air all around them would be beneficial for that.
Having a turretless design isn't entirely bad. It reduces the weight and profile of the tank. Turrets and all the parts associated with them add a lot of weight and forces the tank's design to be taller and more conspicuous than it otherwise would be. You can do a lot with the saved weight that comes with forgoing a turret; say improve ammo capacity, extra armor, a bigger main gun, or just do nothing with the weight savings and enjoy the better mobility and fuel efficiency. Because it's a hover tank the reduced weight is desirable because it means you don't need as beefy of a propulsion system for the same mobility, plus, the weight of a turret shifting around as it rotates and the recoil sending it in different directions would cause problems for a hover tank, lest the thing just rolls over and disables itself because it fired while the gunner and the driver weren't on the same page. If this hover tank had a turret, the chassis would have to be considerably wider to deal with those issues, which comes with its own issues (inability to fit in places, more weight, harder to transport, bigger target, etc). In the case of a tracked tank, the reduced profile makes it easier to camouflage allowing for better ambushes. As well it eases manufacturing and reduces the costs of manufacturing and maintaining the tank due to the reduction of sensitive moving parts. Not to say that it doesn't have its downsides, they're terrible against a guerrilla opponent, but the improved protection of not having a turret and the logistics benefits of lower cost, easier maintenance, more simplistic construction, lighter weight and ease of transportation are all pretty significant things to take into account. You could field more of them for the same cost and have an easier time getting them onto the field in the first place, against a conventional army that's huge.
Your turret traverse is bad and you have strong armor, so play it a bit like a casemate tank destroyer. Keep your gun in your frontal arc and swing your tank to face hostiles.
yes, but as in the adjective. you would call the mech riesig (the mech is giant) in german it sounds weird, Riese (giant as in a really big guy) would be more logical

How powerful would the planned Japanese tanks in WW2 be if they ever went into production compared to the German tanks? Some were planned to have some serious fire power and big guns.
Planned as the prototypes and limited producion or planed as the paper monsters? The prototypes were actually pretty decent, even great. Monsters were... Wastefull.
@@TheKingofbrooklin I'm talking about planned ones they were trying to create. Some of them were big with a powerful gun that was like 120mm or something I can't remember exactly.
Visual sensors cannot actually be miniaturized much more with technology because it's based on light collection of a sensor. Currently webcams on laptops are about as small as they can practically get while maintaining performance. Especially for military vehicles you'd want a larger visual sensor to aquire more detail and color depth. This as well as lensing so you can zoom without having to deal with quality loss of digital zoom
The L5 mech's main guns, missiles and anti personnel gun are all practical in the game. The cockpit is enclosed, using cameras to create a digital display inside the cockpit protecting the driver, which is suitable for the setting. The L5 mech can also couch to reduce its profile, and would help the crew to bail out. In all probability a downed L5 crew would wait for rescue, they probably have equipment to climb in and out like you would for a fighter jet bsck at base. The A8 tank has reactive armour on its side panels, a non explosive kind. So it's practical. The ADS isn't a shield, it acts like one but for short durations. Both L5 and A8 lack thermal imaging, smoke launches/decoys, but you could pretend that smoke is no longer used for concealment due to everything in the future being able to see through it, hence no thermals. In gameplay you never feel like a feature is lacking and the fact this tank has only 2 crew, the whole loading process is now automated, and the driver can also control the turrent is very advanced. The size of the tank is deliberately large, its actually classified as a heavy tank, this implies a much more armoured MBT requirement, probably due to mechs and infantry weapons. The plasma instead of gas operated weapons, and hover tech is just the fantasy aspect of the setting. The Japanese tank is an odd design, I pretend that a rotating turrent would sway the chassis causing instability, but the mobility of the hovering was worth it for traversing terrain. It's easy to make up excuses for sci fi as long as there is a justification for it within the fictional lore, and because of that I think all the vehicles are fantastic.
Well, the size of the mech is fairly reasonable. They are about the same size as titanfal titans, just more beef on the bones. Feet could be larger to accommodate the weight like you said. But I remember playing this game. The mechs were not meant for open ground combat. You get in one of them and you get it to dense cover environments like Forrests or urban center as soon as possible. These things were great in urban combat. The added height gave them better angles on infantry hidden behind walls and better angles on those on 2nd floor buildings. This made mechs great for holding a majority of map objectives (as they were often amongst cover).to be fair this is based off the last time I played this game...around a decade ago i think. Just like titanfall, these mechs are not meant for open ground (leave that to the tanks).battlefield has always been about combined arms warfare, letting players check out the different vehicles and how to play with them based on their strengths and weaknesses that would depend on the battlefield. This is probably why I have my views of mechs being urban fighting vehicles, while keeping the tanks in open combat. that view was enhanced by 2142....I miss this game.
The actual tanks are just Strv 103s. And I thing the things he would have to say about the tanks (the robots) would be a repeat of what he's said about every mech so far.
Yea, maybe I should of mentioned that the bots on 2142 are......special.... My Brother: "Hey, I need a ride!" Bot: "No." _Proceeds to drive off full speed_ My Brother: "ENCLAVE!!!!"
I love your way of explaining things in a lightly fun way, makes the video so much more fun and not boring :D Also BF2142 has been my favourite game, used to play it a lot a decade ago thanks a lot for this vid!
You should have covered the Titans, those are just atrocious from a design stand point. Four naval twin-gun turrets could have been a lot more useful if they are not pointing directly downward at the ground. Just build a bombing bay, does the same thing with a lot less maintenance to worry about.
I feel that the C&C mark 1 Wolverine is the most practical in terms of mechs since it’s almost the same size of a human and is used as a squad support vehicle
hey if you want to do a video on smaller mechs, try the ones in the los planet series. The game with the most mech variety are in Lost Planet 2. In that game, mechs also have a variety of guns. In addition, most of them they are operated by 1 man crew.
All in all a very solid video (as always), but I'd like to point something out. You mentioned that you couldn't see any access ports on the L-5 Riesig, although it actually has one. Look from the underside between its legs, it is quite visible. Combined with the fact that the walkers can crouch down, I don't think entering the vehicle is much of an issue. You also positively mentioned the Bogatyr's two optic sensors. Tho only the bottom one serves the pilot, while the top one serves the gunner. (the L-5 has the gunners optics mounted directly to the guns)
Technically, by definition a tank without a coaxial machine gun can be classified as a Tank Destroyer rather than an MBT, because that would imply that the Pintle-mounted MG on the roof would be for personal defence rather than attacking. Though much like the concept of Light, Medium, and Heavy tanks (and Half-Tracks), Tank Destroyers were considered obsolete after the second world war :p
For the mech you said they have bad elevation, but you don't mention the upper turret of said mech. Both mech have a anti-air turret (from memory dual machine-gun + heat seeking missile), giving the two man different kind of target, those that are above the mech for the secondary turret, and everything under for the main pilot. It's probably to remove the need of the main pilot to have eye everywhere.
tall vehicle can hull down from a longer distance hopefully spotting threats before being spotted. addendum: depleted uranium for electrical power doesn't mean a nuclear explosion
I'm curios to see what the ground pressure numbers of the walkers actually are supposed to be, not just "it's too much to work" but an actual number to be compared to real world non tank vehicles
I feel like the "1 crew member in the tank" is purely just game mechanics Since in Battlefield 4, the driver spot takes the roles of Gunner, Driver, AND loader while the 2nd only takes the TC...and even then, only the HMG up top And the A7V "Heavy Tank" in BF1 takes only 5 people to fully crew, even though irl it needed easily quadruple that (they were also used as makeshift APCs, allowing infantry to dismount flamethrowers from off the tank to use in combat) But still, great vid
I like the Tiger's design. It just lacks a few more details on the turret bustle. Perhaps a longer turret. And more equipment sticking out, mainly optics and what not. Would have been cool. I wished you also talked about the APCS too.
Cool video! Did you make reference to battle on the ice at 8:39? and if yes am i the only one who spotted it lol, couldn't find anyone else talking about it
Any chance we could get an “Everything wrong with Mjolnir Powered Assault armor?” I know it’s not necessarily a vehicle, but I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on the practicality of its design.

I kinda see the walkers as replacements for BF2's AA vehicles. They have powerful anti-infantry along with an AA turret ontop.

@Harli Baron They had basically no mantlet.
Only the KV2 on this list actually had a mantlet.
@@builder396 in which case they had extremely weak mantlets, as in no soviet tank was the mantlet actually any thicker than the turret armor

"The L5 RIESIG is too big" - its literally called "huge"
A lot of these design decisions can be summed up with "looks cool to average observer"
2142. I miss those days. Good times.
Then come play it :) battlefield2142.co/
Apparently the mechs where made to be tanks that can walk through the snow and sand that cover earth in 2142
I mean, to be fair, the tiger in this game is definitely the most realistic tank of all the ones you have reviewed so far in this series
For the T39-Bogatyr I remember that you can see an escape trap between the legs
@@thefullmetalmaskedduo6083 where is that tank helium and hydrogen located
I feel like some of the design faults are a result of the ongoing resource wars, simply put they couldn't afford to make it better because that would take time and materials they weren't willing to spare.

"having a massive manlet would make it very weak and also slow to elevate"

I showed this video to our curator that takes care of our armored vehicles. He really enjoys your series.
In case you ever need more material...Other tanks/walkers you can look at
- The Geth Walker and Mako Tank from the Mess Effect Series
- Warhammer 40k has tones of walkers (Tau, Eldar, Orks, Impreium all use walkers)
- The walkers from Iron Harvest
- The vehicles from Planetside 2 (they also have some powersuits)
- The Walkers from HAWKEN (they are take a different approach to walkers.
Can you do a video on the ground vehicles of the Rebels, Galactic Empire, and the Zann Consortium from Star Wars Empire at war Forces of Corruption?
I imagine Spookston ROASTING the At-at, and it would be funny to watch, haha!
Spookston, can you make a Supreme Commander video?
It's on my list of things to cover.
It surely will be interesting, given the fact that every single unit in SupCom, with an exception for ACU (and probably sACU), are unmanned drones.
@@jacplac97 Precisely, and huge.
I ignore the "1 crew" thing, it's a gameplay concession.

Orkz tanks when
Maybe for an April Fools video, it's hard to criticize something that works via sheer willpower.
I wouldn't really count the crew section for the tanks. It would most likely be more than 1 person in the tank but for gameplay reasons reduced it down to one driver and a gunner like in BF3 & 4.
Other crew positions are modeled in 3 & 4, whereas only one position is modeled for both tanks in 2142.
The L5 Riesig (or Reissig, as you called it) translated to giant or huge, so maybe that’s why it’s so tall
Despite all the negatives you mentioned, 12 year old me enjoyed the hell out of this game, my favorite BF game even to this day.
planetside 2 is a big one. Vanguard looks like a good tank just lacking a coaxial mg and its only crewed by one person. Also 150mm gun is overkill but thats what I like in my tanks oorah
Played PS2 a bit way back when, I'll have to do a video on it at some point.
Also something that I think it's worth noting the A8 Tiger seems to have really high ground pressure
>the turret is much more likely to get hit than the hull. That is statistically false.
id like to see a video on the mako and hammerhead tanks from mass effect
I'd like to see a review on the HT-95 Levkov from BF4 :)
Also, it'd be cool to hear your take on some of the vehicles in Arma 3.

Your turret traverse is bad and you have strong armor, so play it a bit like a casemate tank destroyer. Keep your gun in your frontal arc and swing your tank to face hostiles.

Did you know that mechs actually duck down in 2142, you could still fire from that position.
Would you mind having a look at the tanks in Generation zero? the robot and/or the actual tanks around the map
The actual tanks are just Strv 103s. And I thing the things he would have to say about the tanks (the robots) would be a repeat of what he's said about every mech so far.
NGL I'd love to see you do a video or series of videos on games that actually have good fictional vehicle design.
Yea, maybe I should of mentioned that the bots on 2142 are......special....

Also BF2142 has been my favourite game, used to play it a lot a decade ago thanks a lot for this vid!
You should have covered the Titans, those are just atrocious from a design stand point. Four naval twin-gun turrets could have been a lot more useful if they are not pointing directly downward at the ground. Just build a bombing bay, does the same thing with a lot less maintenance to worry about.
Can’t believe you referenced the ADATS. God I loved that thing.
Battlefield 2142 best far future setting
Jumping out of an exploding titan and parachuting were the highlight moments of multiplayer in this game.
such a unique game..... I really hopes that DICE will make a new one :D
Good video, love it then you talk about multiple vehicles!
And now I am interested in the game!
I'm curios to see what the ground pressure numbers of the walkers actually are supposed to be, not just "it's too much to work" but an actual number to be compared to real world non tank vehicles
I would like to see spookston designing a futuristic tank himself, that would be interesting!
What would you think about doing Frontlines: fuel of war’s vehicle design?
I feel like the "1 crew member in the tank" is purely just game mechanics
Since in Battlefield 4, the driver spot takes the roles of Gunner, Driver, AND loader while the 2nd only takes the TC...and even then, only the HMG up top
And the A7V "Heavy Tank" in BF1 takes only 5 people to fully crew, even though irl it needed easily quadruple that (they were also used as makeshift APCs, allowing infantry to dismount flamethrowers from off the tank to use in combat)
But still, great vid
Really wish they'd make another one of these. I don't give a fuck what the "Idunliksifi" crowd says. GIMME!

I like the Tiger's design. It just lacks a few more details on the turret bustle. Perhaps a longer turret. And more equipment sticking out, mainly optics and what not. Would have been cool. I wished you also talked about the APCS too.
