  • YEEHAW it's time to futz around with another gadget of the past! I found this 1970's portable sewing machine in an antique store a few months ago and was too chicken to try it out until right now, lol.
My goal is to complete a whole garment solely using this contraption, and I uh.... mostly succeeded?
ANYWHO, please enjoy this voyage of discovery and only a little bit of cursing.

I remember it as well, but it was really good to take to a college dorm, so if your hem came loose or a seam in your pants, you could sew it back faster and better than by hand sewing. It wasn't designed to replace my mother's Brother Sewing Machine.

      @recoveringsoul755 5 місяців тому +38

Yes!!! I bought one in the 80s at a Woolworths store at the local mall. It was a bit smaller than this one. Came with instructions.
      I didn't have a big sewing machine
All it did was a chain stitch. I don't think it reversed. You had to manually move the needle up and down to try to lock the stich. It did come with a little bobbin.
But absolutely one of the things they advertised it being able to do was hemming curtains while leaving them hanging up. I never tried that
Doesn't look strong enough for curtain fabric...

I'm old enough to remember commercials for these portable sewing machines from like the 80s... and in the commercial it was always an "emergency" situation, like the hem of your dress ripping in public and being able to quickly fix it... or your kid's costume needing an emergency fix before going on stage. Quick, short, emergency was the name of the game. But imagine carrying that thing around in a purse. 😂 Hard no. 💜

The old singer machines from the 1890s were similar chain stitch machines. The victorians and edwardians made EVERYTHING on them. 😁 to finish the row because there's no backstitch, you have to physically tie the loose ends into a knot, otherwise its easy to unravel. You did amazing 😊

    • @veganvintagegeek2.089

I hand sew and I learned how to hand sew the chain stitch which is remarkably easy to hand sew and comes out exactly like the stitch on the 1970s sewing machine. I'll do my best to explain how to hand sew the chain stitch.
To begin you start off with a back stitch to secure the thread/seam. Next you form a loop and do a base stitch through the loop and repeat until the end of the seam and proceed ending with a back stitch. I absolutely adore the chain stitch once I learned how to, it makes hand sewing go faster and you end up with a strong seam. That being said there is another hand sewing stitch I adore which is sewn by creating and X and the back looks like it was back stitched twice, this stitch is a bit more complex to explain in written form.

I would personally LOVE to see more videos where you just make clothes you'll actually wear! They're my favorite videos from you and I find them the most inspiring, because that's what I'd like to be able to do myself!
They never get repetitive to me because watching you use thrifted fabrics, swap around pattern pieces and problem solve as you go teaches me so much more about sewing than watching a standard tutorial because my brain learns by trial and error and it simply rejects basic instructions 😂
Anyway I say go for it and experiment with your wardrobe by making every day pieces you think you might like to wear because selfishly I would just really enjoy watching you do that and I'd probably learn a lot from whatever unintentional chaos arises from that 😂
I do like big project videos and I mean maybe one day I'll finally make my own cosplay or Halloween costume the way my mom used to do for me but for now at least I find much more enjoyment watching and learning from people making things they can wear every day rather than something that doesn't really feel worth the effort for how little you get to wear it 😅

I’d seen video lately (from whom, I can’t recall, but it might have been Abby Cox) about sewing machine history. The chain-stitch machine, which you have, was invented before the upper thread & bobbin machine; and if you think about it, that’s why it really can’t backstitch, and pulls out so easily. I admire your perseverance though!

I remember the commercial for this thing. My great-aunt (who taught me to sew,) bought this for herself to use on quick repairs so she wouldn't have to haul out her 1956 Singer 403a.
As you've noticed, it's a chain-stitch machine. It was mostly useful for stitching fallen hems while wearing the skirt, or repairing hems on curtains without having to take them down. It was never designed to make clothing on.
Like the previous owner, my aunt used it a few times and banished it to the attic, never to be seen again. I like to think that you are using hers. She'd find you completely adorable.

I remember begging my mom to purchase one for my sister and I to “make stuff to sell,” you know when you’re a kid and think you’re going to get into something everyone wants or likes and then make the big bucks making and selling items just because they were bedazzled. It was back when all we wore was jean, oversized tshirts and bucket hats. It wasn’t truly, but it was a classic look for late 90’s early 2000’s.
