Secret Pants are a LOOK Also my grandma once told me that when she was a girl she got kicked out of her super strict school because she hated the ‘skirt only’ dress code and wore Secret Pants on the regular and one of the teachers found out.
I am SO READY for autumn content! "I'm a big flan," made me laugh harder than it probably should have, but there's nothing wrong with that. The secret pants are amazing?! And they look so comfortable! Great job! I think the sleeves on the top went weird because they were meant to be attached to a blouse pattern, which would have smaller armholes. The vest pattern has large armholes (which you noted) because it's meant to go over another garment without restricting movement. A different, basic blouse pattern might work a bit better for this type of project. Simplicity and McCall's both have some great patterns (I can't recommend specifics because the ones I use are out of print,) and if you want to try designing and printing your own patterns, TailorNova is bloody brilliant. You put in your measurements, design your garment, choose things like seam allowance and how fitted you want the garment to be, then download and print the pattern. There's a free version that lets you download two patterns, and after that you have to pay for them, but there are a lot of options for that and they're still very affordable (about $5.) I recently used it to make a dress and it came out beautifully! I definitely recommend checking it out. Aw yeah, buttonhole foot! Aren't they AMAZING? It's not really a podcast, but I enjoy listening to Eleanor Neale while I sew. She's a UK-based UA-camr who researches and covers various crimes around the world, and I like that she covers lesser-known true crime, does charity shout-outs, and doesn't dramatize cases. She's the reason I bought Bluetooth headphones: so I can listen to her videos without having to struggle to hear over my sewing machine! A friend of mine recommended Criminal, a true crime podcast, but I haven't checked it out, yet. I also enjoy the podcast Death In the Afternoon, and watching general art and drawing videos and streams. Thank you so much for this fun, warm, autumnal video. Life's been, well, bad lately and I'm sewing as a coping method. Your videos are always an inspiration in design and "just go for it" energy, and I just love Frodo and how much he loves you. It's 4:30AM and I can't sleep and this video made me so happy. Thank you.
"And that's why we drink" is one of my favorite podcasts, it's also about murder and mystery but it adds a nice bit of spookyness with ghost stories. Perfect for spooky season!
i'm new to Rachel's channel and has anyone talked about how cute she gets when fall is coming around??? Rachel Maksy can your next video be about making vintage jodhpur pants???
Butterick 6433 is a jodhpur (and jacket) pattern from one of the big four makers. Still searching for others so stay tuned. Edit: Burda 6837 is a more modern pattern that fit true to sizing with a subtle side poof. Reconstructing History also has a pattern for breeches, but I haven't tried it yet.
10:31 is why I always sew the pant legs separately and then sew the crotch seam. Just sew both legs, flip one right side out, put the flipped one inside the other, line up the crotch seams and sew. As long as you make sure to keep right sides together, it's a good tip that keeps the many holes a pair of pants has under control. 14:31 If you want an R rated comedic true crime podcast, I really recommend Last Podcast On The Left! They're definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but they're always really well researched and very funny. They also know when it's appropriate to crack jokes and when not to generally and never punch down with their humor. 18:18 Use a magnet to quickly pick up pins! You can even glue a magnet to the bottom of the box to make sure that they don't even fall out in the first place. 20:56 You can make or purchase some mock camisoles to wear underneath and increase it's wearability maybe? You can also put a button on some elastic to close the arm bands, or simply elasticize them, if the open cuff gets annoying.
I’ve been feeling suicidal these past few days. This video and the fall videos give me hope to at least stick around until my birthday (sep. 30th). I love this, and you. You help me everyday.
Seeing this as my first video by her was just fantastic. I loved the beginning, her style is wonderful, those pics she took are glorious, the mood was super cozy so hell yes to the lighting, and I wish I’m just so glad UA-cam actually recommended something good to me for once
I just made a few purchases for a couple minor spooky things(spider lights, those jelly bloody splatters you can put on windows, and a metal pan with the imprint of 6 skulls(yes I’m making pizza skulls this year), etc.), the world may have gone to shit but that doesn’t mean we still can’t celebrate a nice at home Halloween with our family!
@@beefairy8620 I used to do all of my sewing on the floor. Then I had kids. Now I have two gloriously large desks, and my younger kids are still on top of my work half the time 😅
Y’all don’t use the floor? It’s the biggest surface in my craft space. I got no room for a big table, the bloody table would be the size of the room. 😂
Your "pocketes" caption reminded me that my 3yo daughter calls pockets "hobbits." She gets pissed if her dresses don't have "hobbits" and will insist that I rectify the error. I just wanted to share.

“50 shades of hobbit”, lol! Rachel: shows us the fabric she selected Me: Aren’t those all brown? They’re different shades, but all brown. Rachel, imitating Nick: Aren’t those all the same color? Joking aside, the pieces look great Rachel! My favorite is the secret pants with suspenders, too.
Man, with every video of yours that I go through, I get more and more certain that you are living MY DREAM AESTHETIC. Literally, I aspire to one day be able to even halfway accomplish the room makeovers you do and to have some clothes like this 50 shades of hobbit sounds about right
That style is usually called culottes. My sisters and I used to wear them horseback riding, cowgirls and women ranchers used to wear them so that they could ride astride but still be dressed like proper ladies when they got to their destinations.
I'm having a super anxiety-heavy day (week, month..) and stumbled upon this video and I'm actually feeling almost uplifted! Thank you! ❤️ I will now binge your content like the crazy person I am. Much love 💋 from a decidedly NOT hot Finland. 🥶
Today I was looking up for a retro radio like the one from Rachel's intro. Among other things I found a casette player like the one I had when I was 12yo and seller called it RETRO.... Cries in 35...
Rachel: *draws what she wants to make* Me: "I know exactly which pattern she's gonna use for that bodice" Rachel *uses the exact pattern* Me, a Californian who has never met this woman in her life: "Oh my god it's like we're best friends!"
“Getting really good with the seam ripper” you and me both lady. Lol. Also every time she said “secret pants” I just got the secret tunnel song from avatar in my head but instead of tunnel, pants. “Secret paaaaaants, secret paaaaaaaaants” lol
I stopped wearing store bought stuff other than the occasional leggings since I’ve started making my own clothes. It’s very satisfying and you learn something everytime you sew something ☺️
My favorite podcasts: The art history babes Dressed: The History of Fashion Sounds Like an MLM but Okay The Dream All are really fantastic. The first two are more art and history and the second two are more crime and scheme related.
When you eventually get your own studio, I will miss Frodo laying on and trotting across the patterns LOL. He's a special boy. The secret pants are a triumph. Huzzah!
"The blouse is going pretty smoothly" Me: Noooooooooo "Please don't smite me sewing gods" Me: She KNOWS The sewing gods are all too fond of a joke...and seam rippers
I feel like this is Ariel after she found out how wonderful the human world is and time travelled to now...... a joy to watch and funny and informative.
3/4 sleeve are underrated. You get the coziness of covered elbows, without risking dunking a sleeve in your food or getting it caught in a paper shredder and ripped off your body. 🙃
As a fellow lover of vintage and podcasts I would recommend the following: The Orbiting Human Circus of the Air- 1940s like drama on an old recording set about the shenanigans of the young janitor of the Eiffel Tower who wants to become part of the circus that performs there every evening, to comedic effect. The Magnus Archives- The stories given by the disgruntled archivist in London who records all of the strange and spooky experiences of those who come to them with their stories. As the series progresses, he realizes he's not so detached from these tales as he previously believed. Great for the Spooky Season! Lore- podcast all about real live ghost stories from all over the world, many I've certainly never heard of. The History Chicks- Episodes focusing on the life and lesser known interests and facts about prominent women in history. I really loved their Agatha Christie one. Hope this list help! 😊🌻🍁
Me: I taught myself to crochet a whole ass purse with pockets and hidden storage I can sew too Me, after attempting any type of sewing: nevermind im a child
Podcast Recs: And That’s Why We Drink has a similar vibe to My Favorite Murder! They do paranormal stuff as well as true crime but it’s the same format of two friends telling each other stories and making each other laugh. Radio Rental is a little different; but it has Rainn Wilson as the (fictional) host and it features real people telling their real life unbelievable/weird stories. Sawbones by Justin and Sydnee McElroy is a weird medical history podcast, and their dynamic is 👌🏻 (I’m also personally a fan of pretty much all the McElroy projects) And a kind of obscure one I really like is Bone and Sickle. It’s all about weird and creepy folklore; it’s a lot like Lore, but a little more tongue-in-cheek and with some mild humor.
"Why am I like this?" It's simple! The good Lord decided that normal was overrated and that the world needed another creative person who does not necessarily fit in a box but is completely amazing all the same. Love ya! 😘
I have the hardest time finding things that I like and that fit me. Watching your videos makes me want to sew. I really like a lot of what you’ve made. I like that you talk about what went well and what didn’t. I feel like a lot of people try to hide the imperfections but showing those imperfections almost gives permission for others to make mistakes when sewing.
It's amazing how our brains trick us. I thought, "Those are ugly fabrics" when I saw them. Then I saw what you made with them and I thought, "That would catch my eye, either on someone or for sale in a store." Keep on going with the rest! I can't wait to see the great stuff you make with it!
I'm so terrible at translating fabric to garments in my head!! I always pick stuff that looks so pretty on a bolt, then... not so much... as a garment. 😂 I'm trying to learn from watching Rachel and others like Morgan Donner and Bernadette Banner!

What a mood
your style is like hobbitcore, whiskey grandpa, cottage core, and a little bit of dark academia. RACHELCORE
Secret Pants are a LOOK
Also my grandma once told me that when she was a girl she got kicked out of her super strict school because she hated the ‘skirt only’ dress code and wore Secret Pants on the regular and one of the teachers found out.
@Kaitlyn Bower Your grandma knows whats up. She's a true madlad
That teacher was ridiculous. As long as her appearance was within the dress code it shouldn’t matter what she wore underneath.
@@ragnkjaread the post again! She didn’t wear pants under a skirt.
watching your sewing videos is so addictive, plus it's contagous...I just ordered a bunch of sewing patterns and fabric XDD
My personal fashion is “I watched The Babadook and The Umbrella Academy and decided to base my personality on those two things.”
ME!
That blouse looks amazing on you, it's definatley not too low cut or obscene or anything. Looks great. And I love the idea of stealth trousers.
i'm new to Rachel's channel and has anyone talked about how cute she gets when fall is coming around???
Rachel Maksy can your next video be about making vintage jodhpur pants???
Oh, my STARS! That is an excellent idea! I wonder where you would get the pattern for that?
Welcome!
I always thought that jodhpur pants had something to do with the city of jodhpur.
Hey friend, proud of you for making it through another day.
I hope you have a wonderful birthday, and that it helps you go on😊 I'm not sure how to word this without sounding insensitive, so I hope I did okay.
Heyo my birthday is pretty close to yours :D I believe in you my friend
Hey Alexandra. Well done for hanging in there, I know it's hard. Keep going x x x x
Some of your favorite memories have not happened yet. One day at a time. 💜
Seeing this as my first video by her was just fantastic. I loved the beginning, her style is wonderful, those pics she took are glorious, the mood was super cozy so hell yes to the lighting, and I wish I’m just so glad UA-cam actually recommended something good to me for once
Ngl, the secret pants totally reminds me of the “Sike it’s a jumpsuit” vine xD
SAME
Rachel: "It feels like Fall but I'm holding off!"
Me: sitting in my completely decked out room I did a week and a half ago...
Same yo. Got leaves and pumpkins everywhere. Trying to will autumn weather into being.
I must watch this video immediately at 3:20am. Rachel first, sleep later.
Always❤ same😆
Time zones are so crazy, it's only 9:57 pm here (it's probably 3:55 there)
😂😂🙈🙈🙈❤️❤️
Ella Hopkinson hope you are sleeping well right now. Im off to do just that myself.
Oh, girl, you SO need a cutting table! The floor is doing it the hard way!
Or even a cutting board on the bed. Of course I’m old and would need someone to help me up from the floor....
I do most my crafts on the floor, it’s a much larger space
@@beefairy8620 I used to do all of my sewing on the floor. Then I had kids. Now I have two gloriously large desks, and my younger kids are still on top of my work half the time 😅
Y’all don’t use the floor? It’s the biggest surface in my craft space. I got no room for a big table, the bloody table would be the size of the room. 😂
Rachel:"50 shades of Hobbit"
My brain: " Mr. Baggins is ready too see you now."

I must immediately make my own pair of ✨SECRET PANTS✨
YESSSSS
Secret capris are pretty great too. Especially in the warmer times. Lots of breeze and ventilation.
Can't find the pattern online 😢😢😢
I think they’re palazzo pants. Very Chanel.
Your "pocketes" caption reminded me that my 3yo daughter calls pockets "hobbits." She gets pissed if her dresses don't have "hobbits" and will insist that I rectify the error. I just wanted to share.
That's adorable and your daughter is an inspiration!
I love all of this and agree, all dresses need "hobbits"
I wish it were possible to like a comment more than once. That is adorable.
how true
Thank you for sharing. She's adorable and very much correct, everyone needs hobbits.
Add lace to the bust and voila ! No longer low cut. Both outfits sooo cute. Love the suspenders with secret pants...
"Why am I like this?"
Because it is adorable and exactly what the world needs more of!
I was asked once "what would you call your 'style'?"
I'm somewhere between late pirate and early hippie
also known as "vintage"
The secret pants has a very Jo March vibes to me, don't you think?
"Yes, this is me agreeing with the gender norms of my time... but with a twist!" Mwuahahahah *evil laughter*
Yes! I could totally see Jo in those 😊
Exactly my feeling 💚💚
I love watching you while I sew, because it feels like we are struggling together lol
Rachel yeeting dog toys is every dog owner's forever mood
Idk why but “I’m a big flan 🍮 “ really got me 😂😂😂😂😂😂 my cat is concerned
Omg I FORGOT THERE'S A FLAN EMOJI 😂😂😂😂😂
I mean but her outfit's color palette is basically flan so it works 🤷
I woke my cat up by laughing so loud 😂
You're flan, I'm lemon meringue pie (a little flaky, sweet AND tart, and air-headed...). What is everyone else?
I just paused from that and scrolled through the comments to find one like this bc it rly got me too 😂😂😂
“50 shades of hobbit”, lol!
Rachel: shows us the fabric she selected
Me: Aren’t those all brown? They’re different shades, but all brown.
Rachel, imitating Nick: Aren’t those all the same color?
Joking aside, the pieces look great Rachel! My favorite is the secret pants with suspenders, too.
Man, with every video of yours that I go through, I get more and more certain that you are living MY DREAM AESTHETIC.
Literally, I aspire to one day be able to even halfway accomplish the room makeovers you do and to have some clothes like this
50 shades of hobbit sounds about right
When I hear Rachel say 'secret pants' all I can think of is Caitlin Doughty's 'secret porpoise'
Bentham's head!
YES 👏
Rachel: Ooh, secret pants.
Me: Syke, it's a jumpsuit! *but make it vintage*
"hey look at this cute dress my mom got me
SIKE ITS A JUMPSUIT YOU WERE FOOLED"
That style is usually called culottes. My sisters and I used to wear them horseback riding, cowgirls and women ranchers used to wear them so that they could ride astride but still be dressed like proper ladies when they got to their destinations.
I don’t know if you wanted actual podcast recommendations, but my personal favorite is The Adventure Zone!
I'm having a super anxiety-heavy day (week, month..) and stumbled upon this video and I'm actually feeling almost uplifted! Thank you! ❤️ I will now binge your content like the crazy person I am.
Much love 💋 from a decidedly NOT hot Finland. 🥶
"This is vintage from uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh 1991."
*cries in 29yo*
Same tho. //dead
There was an "antique 1993 van" for sale on marketplace in my area the other day. I feel like a granny 😢😂
Today I was looking up for a retro radio like the one from Rachel's intro. Among other things I found a casette player like the one I had when I was 12yo and seller called it RETRO.... Cries in 35...
I saw vintage 1998 jeans on ebay a few months back. *cries in 22 because apparently I'm vintage now*
The 90's are vintage now???, 😭😂
This video motivated me to finish not one, but TWO of my unfinished sewing projects
I have a sign in my studio that I cross stitched, it says "If you see a seam ripper, now is not a good time" LOL
Lol!
Your little reveal photos always remind me of moving wizard photos 💕
Rachel: *draws what she wants to make*
Me: "I know exactly which pattern she's gonna use for that bodice"
Rachel *uses the exact pattern*
Me, a Californian who has never met this woman in her life: "Oh my god it's like we're best friends!"
“Getting really good with the seam ripper” you and me both lady. Lol.
Also every time she said “secret pants” I just got the secret tunnel song from avatar in my head but instead of tunnel, pants. “Secret paaaaaants, secret paaaaaaaaants” lol
Fun fact, I heard that same song in my head when she said 'secret pants'. Lol! I love watching ATLA, too! 😃
i think back to the vine "my mom got me this dress. SIKE. IT'S A JUMPSUIT. YOU'VE BEEN FOOLED."
😂 I sang it in my head too.
But-make-it-vintage idea: 1930's singing in the rain style Endor Leia with ewok costume for Frodo.
I stopped wearing store bought stuff other than the occasional leggings since I’ve started making my own clothes. It’s very satisfying and you learn something everytime you sew something ☺️
true!! same here!! plus buying secondhand :)
My favorite podcasts:
The art history babes
Dressed: The History of Fashion
Sounds Like an MLM but Okay
The Dream
All are really fantastic. The first two are more art and history and the second two are more crime and scheme related.
Anti mlm high fiiiive
Rachel: whiskey grandpa tends to his crops
Me: *whiskey grandpa wheeze laugh*
When you eventually get your own studio, I will miss Frodo laying on and trotting across the patterns LOL. He's a special boy.
The secret pants are a triumph. Huzzah!
Diane O let's hope she takes her kid to work regularly lol
I imagine that if Rachel gets her own studio, she’ll still use the floor 😂
Rachel at the beginning of September: “It’s not 85! Yay!”
Me at the beginning of October: “Next week it will be 89! It’s finally cooling down!”
No fair, where I live it’s more like, 50 and below starting in September
@@violetskies3397 Alaska? Russia? Who's beating Minnesota?!

"Happy September.
That means,
happy Halloween."
-Rachel Maksy
I'm literally the same. As soon as September hits it's autumn time :D
Well, she's not wrong. September is when all the Halloween decorations come out.
"The blouse is going pretty smoothly"
Me: Noooooooooo
"Please don't smite me sewing gods"
Me: She KNOWS
The sewing gods are all too fond of a joke...and seam rippers
I knocked over my pin box while I was watching the video. The gods are reaching out!
I feel like this is Ariel after she found out how wonderful the human world is and time travelled to now...... a joy to watch and funny and informative.
“Screams in autumn goblin”
Hahahaa YESSS
3/4 sleeve are underrated. You get the coziness of covered elbows, without risking dunking a sleeve in your food or getting it caught in a paper shredder and ripped off your body. 🙃
As a fellow lover of vintage and podcasts I would recommend the following:
The Orbiting Human Circus of the Air- 1940s like drama on an old recording set about the shenanigans of the young janitor of the Eiffel Tower who wants to become part of the circus that performs there every evening, to comedic effect.
Oml the secret pants are sooo CUTE 🥰 🥰🥰
Me: I taught myself to crochet a whole ass purse with pockets and hidden storage I can sew too
Me, after attempting any type of sewing: nevermind im a child
I can see anything if I try. Do not ask me to crochet or knit.
Sawbones by Justin and Sydnee McElroy is a weird medical history podcast, and their dynamic is 👌🏻 (I’m also personally a fan of pretty much all the McElroy projects)
And a kind of obscure one I really like is Bone and Sickle. It’s all about weird and creepy folklore; it’s a lot like Lore, but a little more tongue-in-cheek and with some mild humor.
Yess Sawbones!!!
Yesss I love ATWWD!
I love how you’ve really taken whiskey-grandpa-core and made it your own. And you know what? I kinda want to dress like a whiskey grandpa now too 😂
I love how Frodo turns toward the camera for maximum comedic effect. He's a natural born film star.
My husband repeated "The Elixir of Life!" in a very theatrical voice after hearing you 🤣🤣
Hahahahhaha ❤️❤️❤️❤️
It is!!!
The secret pants had "psych! It's a jumpsuit! You were fooled! Houh-huah-hoh-hoh!" vibes. Also, podcast: Welcome to Nightvale
"Why am I like this?"
It's simple!
Your outfit is giving me Dwight Schrute vibes and I love it. "Identity theft is not a joke" haha
HAHAHA omg yes I need glasses
The second outfit gave me a young Molly Weasly vibe ❤️
It's amazing how our brains trick us. I thought, "Those are ugly fabrics" when I saw them. Then I saw what you made with them and I thought, "That would catch my eye, either on someone or for sale in a store." Keep on going with the rest! I can't wait to see the great stuff you make with it!
Same, honestly
I'm so terrible at translating fabric to garments in my head!! I always pick stuff that looks so pretty on a bolt, then... not so much... as a garment. 😂 I'm trying to learn from watching Rachel and others like Morgan Donner and Bernadette Banner!
"I'm sweaty" *proceeds to light a candle* 😂
Edit: why are her videos so like calming? I litterally fell asleep to this last night and I woke up and I'm finishing it😂♥️
