Whether this is good or bad, we all have to remember that Geoff Tate wrote these songs, which means that he has every right to play them the way he wont to. Queensrÿche is doing great with the old stuff, but Geoff wrote a lot of it, never forget that...
The Queensrÿche saga is a disappointing reminder of human nature. We often forget a marvelous past and sell it in hopes of a possible better future. No matter what happens in and out of court and the legal decisions, the original Queensrÿche gave us some of the best music ever. We are passionate about our opinions, but let's honor that music by carrying on a civil and meaningful discussion of current events. Peace!
Well said, thank you. I've been a fan since 1988, and what's currently playing out in public is heartbreaking. I understand people change, relationships break down and people move on. I agree, let's honor the music and the people that created it, by being respectful.
Not at all... just like there are Chinese Taoist monks over 100 years old living in the mountains who are more physically able than most 20-30 years olds in the West, age is just a number. Geoff Tate is way better today in 2020 than he was here in 2013.... yes he wusses out on certain lines but he can still hit the belters when he has the confidence; ua-cam.com/video/7XACdHtyjWM/v-deo.html
This is sad. I'm only young, but the classic Queensryche lineup is a band that has influenced me so much, when it comes to guitar playing and life. Kelly Gray is just embarrassing to watch, he has none of the passion and style of the legend that is Chris DeGarmo, and Geoff's amazing voice is just gone :( Well, at least Whip, Scott and Eddie are doing well with the two new guys.
Chris Degarmo is one of my biggest influences in my lead guitar playing. I was brought up on Queensryche by my Dad since I was 8 or 9 :) Todd La Torre is still pretty awesome though, but nothing will ever compare to Geoff's old voice, I absolutely loved his voice back on the original recordings (probably one of my favorite voices ever). Now, not so much. :(
I just saw Geoff Tate's Queensryche in Watseka and they rocked the house down!!! So for all of you who say Geoff Tate is done you must have wax build up in your ears. Sure he may not have the range he used to but it was one hell of a show!!! So thank you Geoff and the band you brought because you gave me something that I missed 25 years ago. Mindcrime :)
I just got to see them live in Michigan, I was so amazed with the sound and everthing.. and seeing Rudy and Robert Sarzo with Geoff Tate was very EPIC!!! I WAS FRONT STAGE!!! Only word to Describe it is EPIC!!!
haters gonna hate! Geoff is doing exactly what he wants to do and having a ball! I will always remain loyal and faithful for all the years of listening pleasure that man has given me!!!!!!!!!
do you really think hes enjoying himself? do you really think he doesn't see his own decline? he is in serious denial and his ego wont let him just go away...and so we have to witness this sad raping of an epic song. I honestly think I can go on stage and give a better vocal performance than him right now.
Tate has always done exactly what he wants. He's worth millions, do you really think he cares what people think? He's brilliant, and I'm certain he it's well aware of his age and the fact that his voice is not the organ it once was. His true fan base will always be there because of all he has contributed to the arts! If you are not one of those people, why do you even care to listen? Common sense huh?
he should care...that's his problem..he doesn't care about his product and if he did he wouldn't have talked shit to the audience at Rocklahoma, or he would have walked away from the QR name and built a name for himself and his own music...instead he lives by Operation Mindcrime and continues to hack up the vocals. if he would have parted ways like a real man and not spit in Scotts face or insulted the crowd, I may have a shred of compassion for him, but he is a piece of shit in my eyes, and that's not an insult in his past music..he WAS one of my favorite singers of all time. you can stand behind him all you want, that's what music is all about..everyone has their own interpretations and inspirations..Ive seen them in concert many times and through the years his voice has just gotten worse...I don't dislike him for that. I dislike him as a human being and that kills the music for me.
Geoff Tate is 56 years old, and has been singing for decades. His vocal style and music is a challenge for any vocalist. He´s growing old, that is all.. and I think he does an admirable job working around the high notes he used to reach 30 years ago. He did write these songs, remember! Todd LaTorre is brilliant as the new singer for QR, but he also has the awesome catalogue of Tate-era-material at his disposal.
dolphin66 Geoff isn't the only one who wrote the songs. But that isn't the point. Geoff may be in his 50's but I have heard plenty of singers today who are older than he is who still do better in their vocals than he does. The problem is that Geoff hasn't taken good enough care of his voice. It's a shame because he truly is brilliant, and, yes, I think he did the best he could to work around the fact that he can't hit the notes, but this was just sad to listen to. As for Todd having Tate era material...yes, he has that. But he has some brilliant material he brought to Queensryche as well.
LISTEN UP 2021 UPDATE REGARDING GEOFFS VOICE!! SEEN him on my bday on sept 12 for his performance of empire and rage for order. He voice is 1000000000x better dude he now sounds like his old self. This geoff tate your watching is gone. Geoff is back to his roots and his voice is BACK!
I take that back. After watching Tates Queensryche in Cali, all i can say is that Geoff was the Man in the 80's and even 90's. Guy will never sing Queen of the reich again. RIP Queensryche.
superbatfirenze but i also have to say, that it is time for him to quit ruin these magical songs, which he contributed in making famous, and do soemthing else...it is painful to hear him desperately try to crawl up to the notes he once invented..and miserably fail to sing the tunes in the right way.... better to stop when you re big, than inevitably fall down after.... just remain the Legend you are and let new people come in
50 bucks says these Monsters Of Rock performances are going to be referenced in the upcoming court case as evidence of why Geoff shouldn't get the name. That is, if the judge hadn't already decided to nail him to the wall for Susan's dubious financial decisions, including funneling money through QR accounts for The Voodoos. Or gets any of those witnesses who saw Tate pull the knife to testify. Or a dozen other things. Thanks for playing Geoff, but your goose is cooked brotha. :-/
Ferroorref He was at his peak in 1989. If you sound this bad, you need to quit. Rob Halford still pulls it off and is much older although he lacks the range he once had and sings at a lower pitch.
Id pay to go see geoff tate sing acapella before id pay to see anyone one these days... Only because i was there in the old days.... I see all the comments about jeff... He was...is and always will be the voice of queensryche... Period..
I hate the way Tate butchers these songs by singing them so differently than on the album. Sorry but I want to hear the songs the way I know them and not his improvisational bullshit.
Its always hard for people who age to keep on singing, it's a raw deal. But... while you're in a band you get to be the focus, everybody's first and last notice. It may not last forever but that's how it is. Not a bad trade off if you ask me.
uhm...although this album operation mind crime is one of the best ever recorded concept albums...this is not queensrych..Rudy sarzo on bass?..really?..only Geoff is origanal
Agreed since him on my bday on sept 12 for his performance of empire and rage for order. He voice is 1000000000x better dude he now sounds like his old self. This geoff tate your watching is gone. Geoff is back to his roots and his voice is BACK!
This is not a live recording , its the the feed going thru the board then put together.Thats why there is no ambient sound or crowd. It makes any band sound band...the vocals are way over the top and there is no bottom yo the song...basically this is what you would hear from Todd if uou heard a dry voice recording in a studio...I know any musicians know the difference.
Whats funny is the quote Geoff directed to Todds band in the related interview about the show when he said "we never lost the crowd" and the same cant be said about Todds band where I have seen a lot of disinterested crowds in thier videos. The crowd looked like they were into it.
Back in the day Tate was King , he is older now , we all get older..... even you that are downing him your older.. think before you say out Loud ," He was and always be a star for the 80s when stars were made. Not BORN ........
This is not Queensryche... But just a bunch of musicians who try in there best intensions to play these beautiful songs.... But this sounds terrible... Almost got a heart attack by hearing this... Time for operation livecrime to forget this horrible crap. I saw them in 1992 in Holland at the MOR. They where brilliant... The best concert I've ever seen... but this...? well.... You now what I'm saying... RIP Queensryche... :-((
If you add "w w w" and then a period like normal to the first part of the link, it should take you directly there. YT doesn't allow URL posts because of bots I think.
And studios do produce magic, Todds band knows how to use it, as we all have seen from his singing quality live than from the album, but don't get me wrong he uses everything live that he did on the record so he has som "magic" added to it even on stage....good for him
Correction: he USED to give life to those songs. The U.S. USED to be #1 in the world in education too. We also USED to have horse and buggys instead of cars. Again, singers come and go. Geoff's had 20 years to prove his superiority, and he never cut a single song on his own, much less an album, that demonstrated it. Chew on that one awhile kiddo.
It makes only good sense to put you best foot forward, thats why I give Todds band the props for having a good produced record, every vocal and note has been proccesed and thats how records should be, albums are forever and concerts are 2 hours....really you would want to hear todds direct feed off of thier new album...we all know what it would sound like..that goes for any rock singer.
Only real "studio" effects I've noticed on the Wilton-QR lives is some amplification/echo added to Todd's voice here and there. His natural tone is pretty good, but great equipment and the right stage setup certainly gives it an extra punch. Only guy I've ever seen live who could just completely dominate a stage without any effects whatsoever was Peter Steele, but he's gone now. :-(
From 1:50 onwards everyone is walking about looking for the lost chords so they can pick them up and play them.2:04 Geoff starts singing and then realises hes started too early and swiftly tries to cover it up.This is shocking compared to Todds version who could blow these bunch of amateurs out of the water without breaking a sweat!!!
Really this is how Geoff sounds now, you just don't get to hear it that way or that mix....like most concerts come from the forward speakers , not isolated dry tracks from the board..
The worst part is that he could PROBABLY still do it if he just gave a shit about the performance... I mean Sting is like 64 or something and he still sounds great. I mean fuck Geoff... Take care of your voice and come back. Don't go out like this!
This hurt to watch, I'm sure Rudy is there just for the payday. I have to agree with what a lot of these other people are saying about the guitars out of tune and Geoff Tate, oh Geoff Tate's voice, what in the hell happened? Did he have cancer of the throat or something, I know when singers age their throat ages with them but let's be honest how could anyone say this was great, I could barely tell what song it was in some parts.
Showmanship, charisma, whatever you want to call it....that's the smallest piece of the puzzle. It's like icing on the cake. I need more than that, but Geoff doesn't have it. Furthermore, he didn't write any of the songs that made QR great in the first place, so again, why follow his output? It would be a different story if he could demonstrate he can do material on his own that stands up to the classics he was involved with. Think Peter Gabriel or even David Lee Roth. But he hasn't done it.
I understood what you said. I was just curious at why Geoff can't seem to get a decent producer in studio at all. Not just F.U., but for Kings & Thieves, DtC, etc. He has plenty of money: just find it odd that he won't hire someone who really knows what they're doing.
That was more like Operation Songcrime. Please guys, stop butchering this classic. Even Tate sounds awfull, what about the wannbe musicians around him.
FYI Kelly Gray's involvement with QR goes back to the 80's when he was in Myth with GT, he also played with QR from 98-2002 after DeGarmo's departure. Then produced albums for QR in '09 & '11. I don't think Rudy Sarzo is a "wannabe"......
Hmmm. Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't QR first named as "The Mob"? And in that first days "the Mob" was actually Wilton, Rockenfield, Jackson and DeGarmo? Tate came last, after the core of the "future" QR was already formed As for Kelly Gray - the album with him (an the ones, produced by him, and written by Slater) are painful to listen to. For Rudy Starzo - He'd be better if give up playing with GT circus P.S. Excuse my "brilliant" English :D
You're right, GT was with Myth & the other 4 were in The Mob. GT sang & wrote one of the songs on The Mob demo(Lady wore Black), which was the beginning of QR. My point is that Kelly Gray has been around QR from the beginning. I don't think either version of QR is as good as the original line-up. I don't particularly care for Parker Lundgren, he got in because he was with Tate's daughter. Obviously TLT doesn't work for me. I've been a fan since the beginning, I don't like any of the changes the band has gone through. After DeGarmo left the balance & band dynamic changed.
Some things shouldn't have happen, but they did. If CDG hadn't leaved or if GT hadn't become impossible to work with, it would be great... Unfortunatly there's no chance to turn back time to their glory days But having listened the new efforts from both QRs I can tell that the other one is closer to the original sound. (Still far from it, but closer than this one).
Asha Greyjoy I agree, seems like when CDG left, GT took more control and his wife came into the picture, then things really took a turn for the worse. However, everything the band did was agreed upon by everyone, ie Susan becoming their Manager. So, it's unfair to say that GT did things on his own. I think wives and girlfriends should never have any input into the bands business. I don't believe that GT necessarily wants to get the QR name, I think he wants to be fairly compensated by the band. Also, to be able to use the name for his solo projects. The court dates are set for Jan 2014, unless it gets put over again, so we'll see....... The TLT version has the sound, it doesn't matter when you get older, you can still play the guitar, bass or drums. Age isn't a factor. I don't care for TLT's voice or his stage presence, especially the headbanging. GT's version has the voice, albeit older and that is a factor, his range isn't what it was 20 years ago. He still has the stage presence that he's always had. The band doesn't excite me. I liked Rudy Sarzo back in the day, the rest of them not so much.
I guess you dont understand what I said , I said he does sound like that now, but my implication was that its does sound better in the studio and you and I have talked endlessly about the bad production is on his last 3 or 4 record....no spin here just my opinion
LOL, this is a Brazilian metal crowd, if Kevin Dubrow walked on stage they would cheer, which is fitting since he and Geoff have the same vocal capabilities these days. These fans love music and are being nice. Watch some videos of Maiden in Rio or Rush playing there, you will see the response a real band gets. For a RIo crowd they don't seem to really give a shit and are just being polite. Not sure why Geoff's playing a metal show anyway when he hates the music. Poser if I ever saw one.
Geoff has become the Brett Favre of rock, Instead of riding off into the sunset with a solid legacy, he embarasses himself trying to hang on long after his talent dried up... kinda sad actually
Whipped and Jerkson are as important to the QR sound as Todd. The only musician of the other version of QR who has a distinctive style is the drummer. Degarmo was distinctive as a songwriter, and as a musician on the clean/accoustic guitar. Tate is as a singer. Parker is important to the QR sound? At least you skipped Todd.
Saw Tate playing live early 2020 before covid bullshit & it was way better than this. He took almost every high note in this song and others. Was amazed he still crushed Walk in the shadows too.
The entire reason anyone listened to the Ryche in the first place was that we knew we were getting a band with great vocals, arrangements, attention to detail and a tight live performance. You get all that with the Todd lineup, but what Geoff has demonstrated at MoR is that A. NONE of them can sing, B. Randy Gane fakes his keyboard parts and C. They don't know the songs that well so they randomly pause between certain verses and then get out of sync. Good luck Geoff, but you are done with QR.
This would be a great performance, if it was a garage band doing QR covers. Everyone would be "Oh wow, they sound pretty OK for a garage band". As it is though, this is just sad. The REAL ryche lives on, elsewhere!
But i rather hear Tate sing QR than that other guy anyday. It's the voice of QR, that's it. Yes, he dos not sound as good as he did, but WTF, people get older, and so does their voices. That's life.
And there does seems to have a "lack of acceptance of Todd" he is not very charismatic. ..but I think he is pretty good singer, obviously even though all you guys argue this..singers are the hardest component to find...there are millions of great musicians.
Dude , he should get a whole new recording team, I cant take another bad record...I swear Kings and Thieves sounded like they used a 4 track recorder....He seems like its almost an ego thing or something...I hope he learns
Admittedly it (Tate's voice) does not sound great, but I defy anyone to sound great when their voice is so out front in the mix above everything else. What's more he's not exactly helped by the two old boys on guitar playing out of tune. If you think about it, is his voice that bad when all is considered?
Whether this is good or bad, we all have to remember that Geoff Tate wrote these songs, which means that he has every right to play them the way he wont to. Queensrÿche is doing great with the old stuff, but Geoff wrote a lot of it, never forget that...
Mickey Holm Geoff never wrote a note of music - only lyrics. And even then he wasn't the main songwriter - DeGarmo and Wilton were - mainly DeGarmo.
The Queensrÿche saga is a disappointing reminder of human nature. We often forget a marvelous past and sell it in hopes of a possible better future. best halford impersonation ever
Great song.
"Afraid to know what lies behind my STARE"!

Good to see Geoff Tate with Sarzo and Wright. Saw those two in Dio. Legends!
This is like watching a cover band. very rough

No he isn't. Degarmo was Queensryche. As soon as he left, the band fell to shit
I take that back. After watching Tates Queensryche in Cali, all i can say is that Geoff was the Man in the 80's and even 90's. Guy will never sing Queen of the reich again. RIP Queensryche.

the only two real musicians on that stage are Rudy Sarzo and Simon Wright. The guitarists should have been fired a long time ago.
My god who is so out of tune .... Just quit playing....
Time Waits for no one.... there’s the assent, prime time and the decline.. I’ll always remember Queensryche from the 80’s and 90’s
They are still great in concert..both bands!
Horrible, how can such a good voice go so bad?
Dude, it's not 1978 anymore. His vocal was good in this LIVE performance. Geesh......
chain smoking will do that to ya
Ferroorref He was at his peak in 1989. If you sound this bad, you need to quit. Rob Halford still pulls it off and is much older although he lacks the range he once had and sings at a lower pitch.
Looks like he knows his limits; unlike David Lee Roth.
Exactly. Crappy cellphone recordings of the real Queensryche sound significantly better, because they play/sing on tempo and in tune
Id pay to go see geoff tate sing acapella before id pay to see anyone one these days...
Only because i was there in the old days....
I see all the comments about jeff...
He was...is and always will be the voice of queensryche... Period..
Geoff Tate Rocks.. This is QUEENSRYCHE...!!!!! I love the new sound
My God wow .
He sounds fine. How old is Geoff these days? Pretty good to my ears. This is rock not American Idol.
I hate the way Tate butchers these songs by singing them so differently than on the album. Sorry but I want to hear the songs the way I know them and not his improvisational bullshit.
I know I'm 6 years late on this comment but it's beacuse that's how he can sing it the best these days unfortunately.

brilliant rock singer
HOLY FUCK!!!!
What is this????
America is in a full blown Collapse...never thought Ryche would follow suite...
Its over....
They was recorded straight from the soundboard here thats why vocals sounds a bit flat.
Compare this one to 2018 and after live performances , you can tell he has improved a lot . He can barely sing that part here 3:37

Only guy I've ever seen live who could just completely dominate a stage without any effects whatsoever was Peter Steele, but he's gone now. :-(
I saw queensryche open for Metallica in 1988, and justice for all/operation mind crime tour, in SD!!!!
Just needs reverb like the 80's,That will make it better .
That's right No preamp , EQ, effects, etc. If Todd did this it would be 10 x worse .
Really this is how Geoff sounds now, you just don't get to hear it that way or that mix....like most concerts come from the forward speakers , not isolated dry tracks from the board..
wasnt the mirror good enough?
Geoff needs to sing the lyrics into the mirror...... " All alone now except for the memories... Of what He had and what he knew.... "
***** 1651997 1:08 this is what we like Greg!
I don't know what I love the most, his lacking high-register or his random low-notes
The worst part is that he could PROBABLY still do it if he just gave a shit about the performance... I mean Sting is like 64 or something and he still sounds great. I mean fuck Geoff... Take care of your voice and come back. Don't go out like this!
Chris DeGarmo was the band!!!!
This awful... I'm glad the real Ryche with Jackson, Rockenfield and Wilton kept on going :)
Man can you trolls just live and let live?..
an example that a band is not one MAN. Geoff...you re nothing withou the real QUEENSRYCHE
This hurt to watch, I'm sure Rudy is there just for the payday. I have to agree with what a lot of these other people are saying about the guitars out of tune and
Geoff Tate, oh Geoff Tate's voice, what in the hell happened? Did he have cancer of the throat or something, I know when singers age their throat ages with them but let's be honest how could anyone say this was great, I could barely tell what song it was in some parts.
Rudy was there out of respect for what Tate was.
Where is Crhis DeGarmo these days?
I think he's a pilot now.
2:02 LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
hes still got power but lacks that conviction and polish he once had or just maybe he had a hellova off night
the passion is gone
Jeffy mailing it in again. Susan needs a new pair of shoes.
I understood what you said. I was just curious at why Geoff can't seem to get a decent producer in studio at all. Not just F.U., but for Kings & Thieves, DtC, etc. He has plenty of money: just find it odd that he won't hire someone who really knows what they're doing.
What I mean is ,this isnt what the crowd hears.
Tate came last, after the core of the "future" QR was already formed
As for Kelly Gray - the album with him (an the ones, produced by him, and written by Slater) are painful to listen to.
For Rudy Starzo - He'd be better if give up playing with GT circus
Unfortunatly there's no chance to turn back time to their glory days
But having listened the new efforts from both QRs I can tell that the other one is closer to the original sound.
The sound is so dry. They must have lifted it directly from the desk.
Wow did he miss the lyrics wow
Geoff has become the Brett Favre of rock, Instead of riding off into the sunset with a solid legacy, he embarasses himself trying to hang on long after his talent dried up... kinda sad actually
Yeah, Todd is killing while Geoff is resurrecting. ;)
It's like someone dropped you on your head when you were a baby.
Give the guy a break. He's got to be 50+ now. You can't sing like that forever.
We all apreciate thay you are objective.....lol
sorry Geoff, but Tod is way better :)
But i rather hear Tate sing QR than that other guy anyday. It's the voice of QR, that's it. Yes, he dos not sound as good as he did, but WTF, people get older, and so does their voices. That's life.
Kjetil Espetvedt I agree, Geoff will be 56 next months. I rather hear him then Todd at any given moment.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!
Geoff go home!
And there does seems to have a "lack of acceptance of Todd" he is not very charismatic. ..but I think he is pretty good singer, obviously even though all you guys argue this..singers are the hardest component to find...there are millions of great musicians.
Not a piece of real Queensryche was once--RIP
Geoff doesnt do this track justice anymore AND the dude with the Flying V needs to keep his guitar in tune better this is disgraceful !
then quit stalking him...my god
EXG5000 is Geoff tate's mistress
You cant be serious , have you cought Todd's live performaces they are beyond Horrid.
Still so Awesome !!! so much better than Toddryche . Simply Geoff is QR , songs are just not QR without him
Dude , he should get a whole new recording team, I cant take another bad record...I swear Kings and Thieves sounded like they used a 4 track recorder....He seems like its almost an ego thing or something...I hope he learns
Admittedly it (Tate's voice) does not sound great, but I defy anyone to sound great when their voice is so out front in the mix above everything else. What's more he's not exactly helped by the two old boys on guitar playing out of tune. If you think about it, is his voice that bad when all is considered?
Yeah. The band sucked big time.
