    I normally cry with Disney movies, but this movie has been making me cry since I first knew of its existence, in an interview that Lin Manuel made about the Hamilton movie, he mentioned working on this movie, and I stopped my breath and cried, I never thought Disney would make a movie about my country. And the plot, for a long time I was the youngest in my family (on my mom's side) and while some times that meant a lot of attention, it also meant feeling left out, you think Mirabel's family is big, my mom has 5 siblings, so this movie touches me both culture and experience wise.

      Speaking of crying, there was a scene during the last 15 minutes where I was crying so hard that I would consider it as the saddest scene from a Disney movie since Mufasa’s death.

    I disagree about the ending.
    SPOILERS:
    So many movies seem to say that if one has a special talent the best thing that can happen to them is losing it. That the talent itself is bad. By letting the Madrigals get their gifts back when they fixed the true problem of their broken family bonds and OVERLY obsessing over their gifts and about being exactly what was expected of them, it felt less like "Don't stand out" and more like "take pride of your specialties, but don't let it define you." Does that make sense?

    • @tarragoncake1556
      @tarragoncake1556 2 роки тому +7

      It’s not that using their talents was bad and that wasn’t the message. Luisa for example likes being helpful and protecting others, but her super strength and helpful nature was taken advantage of continuously to where she was feeling stressed and burn out. Isabella had a fake perfect persona and her powers came out superficially perfect until she had the cactus incident. Then she explored her powers in a more honest, healthy way. The message was about unconditional love. Abuela made everyone feel like they needed to earn her love and their own gifts. From Mirabel’s sisters’ perspectives, Abuela loved Mirabel…until she had no gift. They internalized that message and put their own pursuits and joys aside so as not to become undeserving too.

    • @jasmidnurmi9857
      @jasmidnurmi9857 2 роки тому +8

      @@tarragoncake1556 Exactly my point. Maybe I fumbled at my explanation. I was praising the movie because the message WASN'T "Having a talent is bad." which it could have been interpreted as if the family didn't get their gifts back. Animat criticized the ending for restoring the magic. I was trying to respectfully express my differing opinion.

    • @vilmublues752
      @vilmublues752 2 роки тому +6

      Yeah, the magic is a metaphor for the family's bond and one of the messages of the movie is that even if you have amazing talent it shouldn't define you, a message that would've suffered if they just lose their talents and that choice was forced on them.

    • @giovannalisi3529
      @giovannalisi3529 2 роки тому +6

      THANK YOU. I feel exactly the same, how are the members gonna learn the balance of being themselves and handle their gift if the latter is gone? Also I think that saying everyone should lose their power because is "more balanced" or "realistic" is bad, because it's like saying that the only way Mirabel can be treated as equal by the family is only if everyone else comes down to her level, in a way.
      Also, for a more personal pov, I felt Luisa feeling useless because she was losing her gift. I'm a point in life where I'm stuck with my studies, I'm having problems with the things _I_ choose to study and don't feel strong anymore, so I'd love to have the support necessary to back myself up and recover from my fall. Seeing Luisa strong again reassures me that, sooner or later, I'll be strong again as well.

    • @ryantheanimator1156
      @ryantheanimator1156 2 роки тому

      @@jasmidnurmi9857 I really don't see the magic power as their "talent", but rather an extension/symbolism of their "natural talent" that got manifested into superpower. However, some of the power in the movie aren't exactly a "blessing" or even considered a "talent", like Bruno's ability to see the future or Pepa's controlling weather with her emotion, which can be disastrous when she has a mood swing. Additionally, Bruno's actual "gift" is not his ability to see future, it's his love for theatre and acting, as showed in his room where he has different cardboard cutout that he put on the mice pretending like it's a TV and he knows about soap opera stuff.
      The way I see it is that the magic they got was given to them during their time of need to rebuild their home and community during that 50 years since Pedro's sacrifice. The movie's main plot of "miracle is dying" can also be interpreted that the magic is slowly losing its power as time passing, and the resolution of them coming together again and rebuild the Casita showed that they can overcome any hardship without having to rely on magic ability, and thus the miracle's duty is complete. Additionally, you can see the character's growth in the end during the "All of you" song, like Luisa singing "I may not be as strong, but I'm getting wiser" or Isabella sings "I need sunlight and fertilizer", it shows that without magic they still continue to nurture the gift/talent they were born with. If anything, not having back the magic would reinforce Abuela's line "The miracle is you, not some gift, just you" even stronger, and I'd say make a better, more universal moral than just "take pride of your specialties, but don't let it define you." The magic being taken away from them wouldn't undercut the development of the characters, rather something that it's a possibility bound to happen and they need to accept it and move on to live without having to rely on magic anymore.

    Lin is stacking the cards for that PEGOT, isn't he?
    You can tell Lin helped write this. It's written as if for the stage. Not only is it song heavy, but it has basically just one set. What's most stage-like and also the most daring about it is it's a character piece. Character pieces are hard for kids to follow unless they're already familiar with the characters in question. And since kids are part of the target audience, the movie has to keep their attention.
    Lin and other writers have stated from the beginning that they intend this to be a Disney princess film. And Mirabel meets the qualifications, including having a familial tie to her community's leadership (she's the granddaughter of the de facto mayor of Encanto, making her a "princess" in the same way Pocahontas is). Thus I can confidently say that Mirabel is not only the first Disney princess to wear glasses, but she is also the most adorable Disney princess. With Mirabel's addition to the lineup, the letter M will be overrepresented at the start of a princess name, at four such names: Mulan, Merida, Moana and Mirabel. The next most frequently occurring first letter is A, with three princesses whose names start with it (including Anna, who won't join the lineup until the Frozen hype dies down, but is considered an auxiliary member).

    Not all of us are from Colombia. Nobody really has magical powers. You'd think on that basis, this movie would be hard to relate to...but the reverse is true. It could have been set anywhere (but the music would have to be different); the magic is incidental. I found myself thinking back to LILO AND STITCH, which had that same idea of the family (ohana?) being what's important. This one gets my seal of approval also.

    And so, Disney’s animated lineup of 2021, (or should I nickname it, “Disney’s animated World Showcase”) comes to a close with a bang! Raya and the Last Dragon, Luca (from Pixar), and Encanto are all great and what’s seems to be a massive beauty on this lineup is that they’re all set in foreign lands, they are released in one year, and they succeeded harmoniously. Disney truly pulled out all the stops for this movie. They even made sure to include the themes of generational trauma outside of the theater. For example, when I got home from seeing this movie, my mom told me that my dad had a secret child none of us knew about, she has the same name as my younger sister, and that my dad’s side of the family knew about her and have been talking to her for a year. Oh, and they had her, her husband, and her kid over for thanksgiving.

    I just saw this film tonight on the big screen, and it was pretty good. The interactions between the various family members and insights into their respective character really aided the story and themes of the movie. Not to mention the animation was delightful, especially regarding the house and various animals. And while I wouldn't say the songs are as memorable as those from "Moana" (at least regarding LMM's involvement), they were still very captivating. IMO it's definitely the better of Disney's in-house animated films from this year.
    That "Far from the Tree" short was also a solid effort. It was intriguing seeing raccoons explore a beach environment and I like the 2D aesthetic in the animation. The only issue I had with it was the frame rate, which felt off-putting.

    Spoiler Alert: This movie was a masterpiece, but I have to say the only thing I didn't like about the movie is that no one besides Mirabel was the one tell the grandmother off. I honestly wish it was Mirabel's mom who yelled at the grandmother because family member or not, no one should be allowed to talk down to your child in front of you like that. I even got mad at the fact that neither of the sisters even questioned Bruno's exile. I honestly hope we get a Disney Plus series or sequel that kind of mends these problems because for example, I highly doubt that Bruno's relationship with his mother is going to be easy to mend. Bruno's mother caused him a lot of trauma and trauma doesn't go away in an instant. Also, I would love to see more adventures with Mirabel and the Madrigal family, along with giving development to more of the characters and their powers.

      They probably didn’t want the most of the family ganging up on the grandmother since it would be hard to bounce back to the message of family if said family aired out their grievances/pushed back at her all at the same time. I also wish the mother would have pushed back against the grandmother a little more, but being from a Latino family myself it’s not too uncommon for parents to step side and not say anything when the elders of the family are the head of the household. Seen it happen in my immediate family, my extended family, and close Latino friend’s families.

We saw that Julietta and Agustin arguing about how Abuela treat Mirabel in one scene and honestly i want to see more of that. And regarding Bruno. He left on his own and not exiled so Julietta and Pepa cannot do much as complaining cannot bring Bruno back. I’ve been having some self esteem issues lately, and Encanto has really helped me.
    I relate to Mirabel and her two sisters in one way or another.
    For some context, I’m the genius in my family. Just turned 13 and I’m in Calculus.
    I relate to people like Mirabel, and I never feel good enough to meet my own standards.
    It’s often hard to keep up with the elevated expectations from everyone like Luisa
    And I feel like I could do so much more if I knew that I didn’t have to be perfect like Isabela.
    I set really high standards for myself, and when I don’t meet them, (usually by making a minor mistake), I break.
    So to anyone reading this, just know that you’re more than good enough.
    You are a Miracle.
    No one can be perfect, but that’s just the beauty of life. We all strive for perfection in one way or another.
    We should strive to be the best version of ourselves.
    To anyone who feels overshadowed by siblings or by other people, just know that everyone struggles with something.
    It’s hard for even me to believe this about myself, but it’s something I’m working on.

    I saw this on the day it premiered and loved EVERYTHING about it! The comedy, the animation the voices, the family and the MUSIC...Dios Mio, the music is so catchy. On my way home, I was humming "Welcome to the Family Madrigal" and "Pressure" in my head for hours.
    My three favorite members of the family are Luisa, Antonio and Mirabelle; the first and last example being two of my most relatable examples. Much like Luisa, people have often said I was pretty strong...but even strong people can be pretty vulnerable on the inside.
    As for Mirabelle, I know how it feels to grow up in a family where your kin is either highly skillful or incredibly gifted. My dad can work the farm better than most of us, my mom does nearly everything around the house and my sister is able to drive and find work anywhere.
    Meanwhile, due to my special needs; I can't drive anywhere on my own or use certain tools or pieces of machinery. Sure, I'm a gifted storyteller and have a talent for writing (with three of my stories fully published.) But according to today's society, people like writers and artists are "the least important people in the world" (or as some big business people call us, jobless low-lifes.)
    Due to such circumstances, I can't help but feel a little down with what/who I am. But my mother always tells me that aside from helping the family out whenever possible, my biggest job is keeping our family emotionally stable by keeping their spirits up.
    In closing, not only was this movie great but it connected with me on several levels.
    Final Verdict - A

    ❤💖 Interesting fact - This is the amazing collaboration between the directors of Zootopia Byron Howard and Jared Bush and Lin Manuel Miranda the music songwriter from Moana making a beloved animated film Encanto. Such an amazing collaboration with amazing talented filmmakers. I did heard news that these filmmakers were making an original animated film announcement back in 2016 and back when Zootopia and Moana were released during that time.
    Happy 5th Anniversary to both Zootopia and Moana! I am watching both movies this year! Congratulations, Disney filmmakers! 😃😀😄😁😊😉 👍🏻 💖❤

    I saw this yesterday in the theater thanks to my older brother and I am thankful that I got to see this new Disney animated feature after haven’t not been to the theaters much this year except to see Jungle Cruise, Black Widow and Addams Family 2, and this one was my best theater experience in a long time. I definitely had a lot of fun with the Madrigal Family and with the Lin Manuel Miranda songs. Three of them like “The Family Madrigal”, “Surface Pressure” and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” ended up stuck in my head after each one ended. So I definitely know Lin knocked it out of the park with these songs. And I’m just excited for what Lin will have for the upcoming live-action Little Mermaid remake when he’ll be collaborating with the original film’s composer and Disney Legend Alan Menken. My turn!
      The Story (5/10) Too unoriginal for it's "save the magic" story (but I will give it credit that the team at Disney did put effort)
      The Animation (9/10) At least it's not bad, but the designs look too realistic
      The Characters (6/10) It was a mixed bag, they can be ranged from generically good (6/10) to stupidly annoying (1/10)
      The Songs (7/10) Sure, this is still Disney, but the songs doesn't make me irritated
      I give Encanto a 5/10 for being mediocre, but at least it's enjoyable.
      I highly recommend you to just skip Raya and The Last Dragon and stick to Encanto instead.

      Story: 7/10 (It's quite unoriginal, since it's like one of those chosen ones story, but it's still fine.)
      Animation and camera movements: 9/10 (Absolutely amazing, and the camera movements in the songs fits well!)
      Characters: 9/10 (I like how some characters are struggling to be perfect or is struggling to carry the entire family on her shoulders to protect them talking about Luisa and Isabela)
      The songs: 9.5/10 (I absolutely love the "We don't talk about Bruno", "Waiting on a miracle", and "What else can I do?". We don't talk about Bruno gives you mixed emotions about Bruno thinking that he's a villain when in reality he's just a guy who left his family, because he fears that he doesn't fit in. Waiting on a miracle represents Mirabel struggling as an outcast, and questions where she's supposed to be part of the family. Finally, "What Else Can I do?" is a song that represents Isabela struggle to be perfect, as she's an older sister who is supposed to be perfect to make her little sisters look up to her.)
      Overall, a 9/10 a good movie, with a *decent* plot. Disney is finally making a decent movie that doesn't hurt my head!

      For me it’s
      Story 7/10 (yes, unoriginal, and not really that exciting, but it’s simple and has a veery important message that doesn’t really lacks development, still not the focus of the movie either. It also has low energy in some scenes)
      Animation 10/10 (great character and set designs, creative scenery, good musical numbers, very colorful and vibrant)
      Characters 10/10 (They are the main focus of the movie and excels on that. Fun and original personalities, some can be surprisingly profound, and all have charisma and the movie is all about getting to know them all, and they are the reason why the movie works)
      Songs 7/10 (I’m not a huge fan of Miranda but not a hater either. Some of the songs I enjoyed a lot, but there were a couple that really dragged, still not worthy of a 7. My main problem is that none of them help to progress the story, most just tell us things we already knew about the characters or maybe they do tell us something new, but nothing we couldn’t have learned through other elements in the movie.)
      Overall an 8/10

      I was thinking about that when driving home after watching the movie and thought maybe it had less to do with her receiving a "gift" in the end, and more to do with her feeling like she belongs in the family and is not being treated as a black sheep outsider anymore because of her lacking special powers, which reminds me of Hunchback of Notre Dame where even though Quasimodo doesn't get to be in a romantic relationship with Esmerelda (since she chooses Phoebus) he is able to be accepted into normal society after getting his freedom from Frollo despite his own deformities.

    • @xPrincessJellyfishx
      @xPrincessJellyfishx 2 роки тому +2

      My theory: Mirabel did receive her gift as a child. When the door disappeared for her, it was just the house. Through out the movie, she’s the one that interacts the most with the house (since she doesn’t have powers), the responsibility of fixing the house falls upon her, per Bruno’s vision, and at the end, when she puts the doorknob the house gets the magic back. In conclusion, Mirabel’s gift is the same as her abuela’s. She’s responsible for everyone and the house. I believe that once abuela can’t fulfill her role, Maribel will be the one to step up as the matriarch.

      I know on Disney + they have the Latin Spanish dub w/Coco so here’s to hoping they do the same thing with Encanto

    Encanto is one of the only CGI-animated films to not have a specific villain. Before it came out, I always thought an evil sorcerer was going to be the villain. Eventually, I realized the evil sorcerer was Bruno. Nobody in the Madrigal family was allowed to talk about him due to either Abuela, Pepa, Julieta, or all of them having a fallout with him about his ability to see the future. Mirabel only wanted to learn about her family’s past to save them and their house from falling to bits, but she also wanted to know why she didn’t get a gift.

    SPOILERS AHEAD! You have been warned!
    I think that Abuela's husband's song was my second favorite, with my first being We Don't talk About Bruno. The visuals that went along with it makes it so sad when it shows him protecting everyone from the raiders.

    I wanna see this, it looks cute and Lin Manuel Miranda also did the music for my favorite summer movie this year: In the Heights.

      I agree. That was one of the songs that got stuck in my head after it finished along with the opening song and the oldest sister’s song.

      @@hunterolaughlin Yeah those songs get stuck in my head too. AniMat's favorite song in Encanto came close to being my favorite since I love that type of Disney songs. Also same goes for Isabela's song
