    Hello Dustin. How would the Loxia 25mm f/2.5 compare to the lenses you mentioned in this review if AF/MF and price are not considered? Size is important so the GM is not an option.

      I liked the Loxia optically, but obviously they aren't for everyone.

    Can the 24mm lens hood be used with the 40mm and 50mm lenses from the same line (I don't like the tapered design of those two)?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  2 роки тому +1

      I didn't test that, but there is a good chance those hoods would cause some vignetting.

      Yes you can use the 24mm hood (which looks much better) on the 40 and 50mm, but not the other way around. 👍

    Thank you for your review. Finally found a great used version and at its used price I just had to give it a try. Also have the other small G primes but still questioning if I will use and keep these or go with the Sigma I-series f/2 versions for my compact C bodies that I plan to use them with. I have all but one of the GM primes but find anything bigger than the 50mm f/1,4 GM is a pain to carry around with the C bodies. My C cameras are for travel and I want to keep those kits small and light. Do love the build even 5hough the Sigma’s also have an aperture ring but their ribbed metal hoods are heavier than the need to be. Hoage makes some great hoods for both Sony and Sigma that I use. Will see how it goes but a lot to choose from. I think the biggest negative is that there is nothing at 20mm, 28mm, 35mm, 65mm or 85/90 like Sigma has to choose from. I like to stay in one lens family from 20mm to 85/90mm for any primes. Sony has only covered this range with their GMs. Take care.

      Interesting line of thought there. I'm not sure how I would advise, though if you want to stay brand specific, obviously, Sigma has a broader range of focal length options.

    This lens could be the best street lens for the A6400. It is small, weathersealed and fast focussing. You don't need any more than f2.8 when shooting on the streets. The more in focus, the better. It will be the classic 35 mm equivalent on the APS-C. The Zeiss 24 f1.8 apsc is long in the tooth and not weathersealed.
    There isn't a single video on youtube yet of the Sony 24 G on the a6400.

      Typically lenses get reviewed primarily on their native format (full frame for this one). If you want to use it on APS-C, though, go for it

      I am using it on an a6400 and it is very impressive. As for the missing OSS, be sure to set at least 1/80 when taking pictures in low light. I have a question for Dustin. I have noticed that when I open a RAW file in ACR the overall sharpness is much lower than the jpg file produced by the camera. The correction profile (Adobe) is also not as effective. Could this be related to the lack of distortion compensation on the a6400 for this lens? Thanks

  • @gitithadani

    I have been using the tamron 24/2.8 (r4 sensor) since over a year now and wondering whether I should shift to some of the newer options. However the tamron optics are excellent - detail - as well as the 1:2 macro. It does have barrel distortion but easily correctible. From what I am observing is that the build design AF of the sony is better particulary for video - also out of focus rendering but the tamron optics for design, museum and architecture is better. Price is far less. The sigma matches the sony design & the samyang gives a faster aperture. I think the sony lens should work very well for video on their compact bodies.

    I have Samyang 24mm F1.8 and it is amazing since f1.8. I do not see the reason to buy this lens with f2,8. I have no doubt that this lens is a premium lens. But at the end of the day if you have the better performance (because of the faster shutter) I will always pick Samyang. Samyang is no longer a Price/Quality compromise. No, It is the same performance (or sometimes even better optics like 35mm f1,8) with a better price. Sony is great but a lot of lenses are strongly overpriced and it is no longer the superior optics. Sigma makes better optics in some cases (85mm f1,4 DG DN) the same Samyang (75mm f1,8, 35mm f1,8, 24mm f1,8) but there are still lenses where Sony dominates (90mm f2,8 Macro, 14mm f1,8, 12-24mm f2,8) and I hope that Samyang, Tamron, Sigma will give us an alternative.

      Hi Martin, was that the 24mm F1.8 or the older 24mm F2.8? I'm skeptical that he's had a chance to go through 5 of the new lens, since it is just now becoming available.

    I always enjoy your reviews but was really expecting to see you compare this to the the Tamron 24mm. If it isn't too late, maybe you can compare the two? Oh and isn't it shocking how well the cheap samyang does when compared to much more expensive lenses! I usually stick to sony or tamron glass but am thinking I will buy that little samyung just to see for myself what everyone is talking about with it. Hard to argue with the price and it is so small that it could easily fit in the camera bag just in case the need arises when I am out hiking even though I usually have a zoom lens mounted.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  3 роки тому

      That's a fair criticism.

    • @gunn1ng
      @gunn1ng Рік тому

      The Samyang is a great lens, but most definitely bigger and heavier. Tiny aint' that tiny in this case, as it's 8.1 vs 5.7oz and a full inch longer. You don't get the extra 1 1/3 stops for free. The Samyang outperforms the Sony in sharpness, bokeh and focus breathing, but the Sony in almost everything else, including AF, build quality (metal vs plastic), features (declickable aperture with a marked ring), hood, weight and size and surprisingly even low light AF performance. Samyang on a tripod locked off in manual focus for something like a landscape would easily best the Sony, but I personally wouldn't use this class of compact lense for that application anyway...
