  • My great uncle, Vernon "Booger" Ray was on the Johnny Carson show on March 27, 1987. As you can see, he was a card.

    I remember Vernon Booger Ray on the Carson show. I really liked him and often thought about how he lived, in a free country. It is such a low down dirty shame that our country is not that way anymore. The spirit of Booger is still strong but this country needs to catch back up. I can just see him right now, riding in that old wagon waving people to go on by while keeping two faithful mules under control with a pair of relief mules tied to the back and singing to himself. He brought a lot of smiles to a lot of good people. God bless ol' Booger, wherever he may be !

      YOU COULDNT MELT ALL OF THE SO CALLED LATE NUGHT HOSTS,AND POUR THEM ON CARSON!
      ILL GIVE FALLON HIS DUE,HE CAN DO SOME GREAT IMPERSONATORS, BUT BEYOND THAT. ITS A WASTELAND. NOT MUCH MORE THAN FLASHING LIGHTS AND REPETITIVE NOISE.. AS FAR AS ANYONE APPEARING ON ANY OF THE SHOWS,THE INTERVIEWS COULD BE SWAPPED FROM HOST TO HOST AND GUEST TO GUEST,NOTING SPECIFIC. JUST HASIC,GENERIC.
      NOBODY EVER KNEW WHERE CARSON FELT ABOUT POLITICAL ISSUES.HE WOULD STICK IT TO BOTH.
      THESE DAYS ITS ALL ONE SIDED,THEY ALL SLAM ONE WAY. OH WELL.
      I GUESS THATS WHAT MAKES LOOKIN BACK SO MUCH BETTER.

    Johnny would regularly have a guest from a small town or the country to tell their story. He treated them the same as he treated the biggest Hollywood stars. Its what made the show so great. Thanks for posting this. It brought back great memories!

    Booger was a fixture in the 60's and early 70's along US 70, generally between Idabel and Durant although I have seen him up toward Heavner. Toward the end of his life he hooked up with a former Sheriff and conducted trail rides for groups from Wright City to Cloudy, drew a lot of folks out of Dallas and Oklahoma City. He was a well known and well remembered character.

      vern wallen I got hooked on David Letterman way before he really caught on. I was working swing shift in an Oregon sawmill around 1979 or 80 and couldn’t get to sleep right away after work, so I would turn on the tv and have a shot of orange juice and Canadian Club to unwind at around 1:00 a.m. Sometimes his humor reversed the effects of the nightcap and then it was harder to get to sleep. All in all, Johnny was truly a very funny man and an American treasure that I never really grew to appreciate back then. Up until then I didn’t stay up late enough to watch late night tv as a logger and millworker kept early morning hours. Johnny and Dave had a similar sense of humor that I can relate to.

      Johnny was from Iowa and Nebraska, and could relate to average people. After Johnny left the scene in 1992, I couldn't bear watching Letterman trying to make a joke of these type people--everything was a joke. Johnny, like you said, talked to them like real people. I really miss Johnny because of exactly this fact. Whether it was a 105-yr.old lady, a woman who collected odd-shaped potato chips, or a farmer, gold prospector, etc....Johnny always didn't make them the butt of jokes like Letterman. Leno was a fair transition, but looking at it now, it's about only the Hollywood elites, pop icons,, very unfunny comedians, etc. I miss Johnny terribly.

    you know i was just wondering, who seems the happier, Booger,or Johnny, and i think its Booger, money aint everything.

    • @hunglikeahamster3248
      @hunglikeahamster3248 5 років тому +12

      I don't think it was a matter of money. Carson was fresh off another acrimonious (and expensive) divorce here if I remember correctly. Booger had the good sense to swear them off, marriage-wise. Lol
      It's been amply proven though. Money does indeed buy you happiness. Which is not to say you can't be happy without it, nor that you are necessarily free from misery with it. You will just statistically be happier if you have it. :)
      It's more accurate to say money prevents misery than buys happiness. You just need enough of it (whatever that means), not shitloads of it. Financial woes are a leading cause of suicide, stress, divorce, crime, etc.

    • @The_Story_Channel
      @The_Story_Channel 4 роки тому +4

      @@hunglikeahamster3248 I would like to see those studies that proves money makes you happy and even then I would take them with a grain of salt. If money buys you happiness then why can you go to so many third world countries where people have just enough money to meet their basic needs and they are some of the happiest people you will ever meet? I am not talking about impoverished places where people are starving, those people are indeed unhappy.
      I lived in the Philippines for a full year and those people did not have much but they were very happy and very hospitable, they would share food with you even if they were lacking and they would give with a big smile on their faces, thankfully I observed this from a distance and was able to buy my own food.
      On the reverse side, if money makes you happy then why have there been so many celebrities and famous people who have committed suicide? many who have had every material possession and financial security they would ever need and yet they were miserable inside.
      Money can do a lot of things but it cannot make you happy, for example, It can help alleviate stress by taking away the burden of bills but that in itself does not really make someone happy, it just gives them a reason not to worry as much about the cost of living.
      True happiness comes from a combination of many things such as how someone sees and understands life and what they do with the time they are given, it comes from having a purpose or a mission that you are actively trying to fulfill, it comes from making a positive difference in the lives of those around you or perhaps your community, town, city or even the world.
      There is a very good chance that if you are a selfish person, you won't be happy, no matter what your bank account says.

      @@The_Story_Channel I'm not sure what issue you are taking with what I said. My post was situationally in response to the original poster, and this ol' guy vs Johnny, and I made many of the same distinctions you do, and could have made many more.
      Throwing celebrity and fame into the discussion muddies the water however. I could argue either way at length but I think the point is already moot - did they start out seeking fame, fortune, power? None are great starting points. But as they started somehow, my only comment is that fame warps many people in all kinds of ways. I'd put money itself further down the list, except the aspect that their rapid coming into it plus the cult of celebrity tends to allow and make assholes out of those who don't see the danger. But again, celebrity doesn't equal money nor vice versa. It's a perverse and wildly skewed subset and should be held separately.
      You may have seen the documentary, Happy, by Roko Belic? Good movie if you haven't. You'll find TED Talks given by him here on YT and you can rent the movie as well. It's not entirely accurate however. Most of it is more a matter of societal (or even geographical) happiness or lack thereof, and comparing the US or Canada to India really isn't useful except as a reminder that our *rampant* materialism isn't likely to make us happy and in fact does the opposite. BUT, much higher levels of materialism are *required* here. Can't afford a car? In many locales, good luck with that. You'll be unable to get a job, or you'll ride public transit along with the scum, or you'll walk, or you'll stay put and otherwise do without. Geography in general factors very much into what one "needs" to be happy here, and those needs are very disparate. The reasons should be self-evident so I won't bother listing them here...

      @@The_Story_Channel I wholeheartedly concur with your sentiments, Mr Canuckken. Your comment is well presented and very true indeed. I personally am most disappointed in Conan was a great fan of the NBC New York Conan BUT ever since his show went out to Hollywood " he has soled out" to Hollywoods liberal agenda and his show has diminished because of it " have not watched any of them in years" Craig Ferguson was my last because I enjoyed his mindless humor with his sidekicks Geoff the Robot and Secretariat the Horse.
