    Good thing you’re replacing the tie rod ends, because the ones you’ve got on this episode are on the wrong sides!😮 (The bend in tie rod is supposed to point towards the pivot point of the wheel to avoid rubbing on the rim when the wheels are at full lock)

    Just helped a mate unpack an Alfa GTV that has recently imported into NZ - we’ve both been watching this religiously. It’s the best kind of mashup done with the right sense of style and parts mix. Looking forward to the video of it being given the jandal!

    Freudian slip with the hazards? Love your work, cheers. If you are having the steering arms CNC'd, won't you be able to pick the tapper, for the tie rod ends? Might make finding the perfect tie rod ends easier?

    Hi Mate, love your videos, I have followed a lot of your projects! Whilst you are changing the rack and steering arm lengths.... That could induce bump steer as the geometry will change .. Worth taking the springs off and setting up a rig bolted to the hub and watching the toe change, as you move the hub /suspension up and down...Maybe test moving the rack mount fore/aft and up/down and finding the best position with minimal bump steer. Hi from the uk!

  • @stevetrepanier4351
    @stevetrepanier4351 2 місяці тому +1

    Awesome work Jeff! I do recommend doing a final bump steer check on the 3d printed parts before committing to the CNC arms, though. Although you think the rack is in the same spot (and inner tie rod joints are also in the same spot?), it is very sensitive, including how deep the taper is cut in the new steering arm.

    I must admit that I was one of the people advocating the Escort rack, I did spend a while trying to find engineering drawings with the travel. As I know now I had overlooked the different rack positioning. I don't know what power steering you are using, over here in the UK the Vauxhall Corsa column is used by a lot of hotrod builders.

    Jeff, probably even today in some states of the US you could just prep and weld those steering arms, maybe do a Dye Penetrant or Mag particle NDT on the welds and drive away. Back in the sixties we did a 'cut and shut' of steering arm components on a mates 1963 Ford Falcon rally car, right there in NSW Australia. The old Falcons had way too slow steering for Forest Rally stages. Those modified parts never failed in service over many miles of Rallying and some heavy thrashing, there was no NDT done on any of it. Not saying that's a good thing and certainly not the done thing today.

    You talked about the types of welding. Halfass Kustoms has a welder type you didn't mention. By itself, it's a laser than can remove surface rust and old paint. In this setup, it looks like particles are being shot at the surface, but those are particles escaping the surface and are being hit by the beam. In order to turn it into a welder, you add a wire feed. He says it keeps the material cooler allowing him to do continuous welds on thin steel sheet metal. He did say it isn't perfect. It can't handle thicker rust. He also has to go back with his TIG to fill holes left when the wire broke contact.

    The bump steer will only be the same if the distance between the inbd rack pivots are the same. If they’re closer together you’ll add toe in bump steer on the outside wheel.

    You have now more torsion force on the steering column. You need tighter guide bushings of the column, the steering wheel is moving. Also watch out you don't shear by torsion the steering wheel axle.

    You have carefully positioned the rack the same as before (although the casing is a bit shorter) but you have not mentioned the length of the rack itself. Unless it is the same length as the old one you will have introduced some bump steer. The length of the (moving part) of the rack is the single most important measurement after rack height.

    Loved the dash camera footage as not only was the Komode driver being an idiot but so was the ute he was passing who sped up a bit to make it even more dangerous for the Komode to get passed.
