RAGBRAI 2022: Part 1, The Start Of Our Week Long Journey Across Iowa

- This year Kari and I decided to embark on a week long journey across Iowa for an event called RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI stands for the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa and was in its 49th year in 2022.
This ride is roughly 450 miles long and somewhere between 10,000-20,000 people join every year. In preparation, we trained about 500 miles.
For those of you interested, I'm riding a Surly Pack Rat and Kari is on her Specialized E-bike. Yes, an E-bike! Pedal assist allowed her to complete this ride with me at a similar speed, though don't let it fool you, even on the 100 mile day she had 50% of her battery left, using mostly leg strength to manage that 60# bike.

It was such a great time meeting you and definitely made my RAGBRAI. Thanks for inspiring myself and so many others to get out there and experience RAGBRAI and other adventures.
How does someone get back to where your vehicle was left at the beginning of the ride. I would be doing it by myself.
We rode the same RAGBRAI and the weather was the very best of all 49 held so far. RAGBRAI restores your faith in mankind!!! Wonderful people everywhere, both the locals and the riders. Did not do 50 but planning on 51.
That weather ruined all Ragbrai going forward for us lol. Being our first, it spoiled us. Lovely event and great people. Hope 51 training is going well! We hope to get back again but not sure 51 will work for us. Maybe next year.
This was created in the year I was born. What a great way to spend my 50th birthday.

I watched your videos about Ragbrai 2022 and wanted to let you know how much my wife and I were impacted by them. I loved your presentation - your videos are very entertaining and fun to watch. I felt like I met you both by watching and I can’t wait to see your Ragbrai 2023 videos. I especially appreciate how you showed the highs and lows of the week. My wife and I are recruiting family to do Ragbrai 2025 (we have to wait until then for personal reasons) and I send your videos to people as a representation of what to expect (good and bad).
Also, I found out about Ryan Van Duzer from watching your videos - so thanks for opening that door for me.

We truly appreciate this comment. We enjoy sharing our experience and happy to hear it has been something worth watching. We are very excited to get out there for 2023 and see what this year has in store for us at Ragbrai, both the highs and lows. Who would have thought getting ready to 'toss' everything and go on an around-the-world bicycle tour would be so difficult? Securing stable guardianship of a property is a pain!
Not able to make 2022 RAGBRAI but returning from CA in 2023 should work out on my way to NYC to jump a plane to Ireland for the European leg of my "Ride Till I Die!" tour!
I did not know there were charter services available! Thanks for that info! The meals every night would be great, as well as showers-but packing very light so don't think I'll need that hilarious "Stupidity" trailer!

I hope you were able to find celiac-friendly food all week! We were talking about how hard it would be to have any food allergies/restrictions on RAGBRAI, but I'm glad you were able to eat a Porkchop and Ice Cream!
I was expecting a struggle but ended up finding enough food throughout, also planned to stock up when able in our small ice chest. It was definitely a challenge at times. But the pork chop and ice cream were delicious!
I think you have it a lot easier than a healthy vegan trying to find healthy food on the route.
Anyways, the number one thing that I think about is being able to fall asleep early enough, if the temperatures haven't dropped enough. For the Texas summer, I have needed to wait until 3am, with a wet towel on me and a fan to get to sleep.
We were very fortunate this year with cooler weather at night. Otherwise sleeping would have been ever more challenging.
You got footage of our good friend Caleb on skates! He got engaged on this RAGBRAI! On our Day 6 video you'll see the footage. Great video, thanks for sharing.

It is too bad that they don't arrange something like this in Europe, we have amazing bike roads. I would love to sign up, but from here to go to Iowa, possibly not the easiest right now.

I have Celiac Disease and I was planning on doing RAGBRAi too, so nice to know that there's options.
It definitely is possible. Harder at times, but possible. Plus pork belly had really good evening meals gluten free that I had no issue with.
Great first day guys. Looking forward to each day of your ride, especially the 105 mile day to see how Kari's Ebike does. Only 20% usage for 55 miles? She must be hitting those cranks pretty hard.
Thank you. Excited to go through the footage. That definitely was a big day to challenge the e bike (but it did make it in one charge). I was shocked she only used that much battery on 55 miles myself. She worked hard to pedal that bike as much as possible without the e assist.

So, not to wreck future videos of RAGBRAI 2022, but Saturday the non-riding day before, was the hottest day. The weather was awesome all week with highs in the mid 80's down to the upper 70's, it was gorgeous. Also, the first day ride was probably the most bunched-up due to the hills really jamming people together. Final day for whatever reason, actually more elevation change, it seemed like riders were much more spread out...and day 7, the scenery a small slice of heaven. 7:55 I see you got the ass-clown who could do 30MPH without pedaling.
It definitely felt the warmest that Saturday before. Could not be happier about the weather overall. Loved the scenery of day 7. Beautiful.
I want to do this next year, but the first thing I am concerned about is that Im gluten intolerant also. Living in the midwest, its a struggle
I was very nervous going into it. That’s why the small ice chest with snacks. However with the charter service meals for dinner (gluten free) and finding some foods, it was doable. I didn’t always eat the healthiest though 🤷♂️. I bet it can be challenging there for gluten free.
I have bike toured for the past 50 years in every Province in Canada and 27 States, both alone and in small groups of 4-10. This is Not my idea of a bike tour. but if you enjoy large crowds go for it.
That’s quite extensive touring. Would enjoy getting more into that in the future. This would be a much different experience given the amount of people.
I'm enjoying your videos. Does Pork Belly set up a long way out of each town? Did you find it was too far to bother going back for dinner, beers etc after the end of the day? First timers we are looking for a charter for next year. Looking at PB but any others you heard good things about? Cheers from Australia 🙂
Thank you. Because of pork belly size of the charter, yes, most nights it was further from the town that others or if you were just camping on your own. There was always a shuttle we could take, but most days we were back late and didn’t want to shuttle to town. Pork belly did have its own dinner and drinks, which gave us another reason not to go into town. There were plenty of people though who shuttled into town each day after the ride. Overall, enjoyed my experience with them and will be going with them next year. We heard people enjoyed brancels charter, I heard a few talk about pedaling pandas, but being only our first time last year those are the only other two. Cheers! Maybe see you out there next year.

If you are alone how does someone get back to where your vehicle was left at the beginning of the ride ?
So some of the charter services offer shuttle service without requiring you pay for their entire week. We opt to use pork belly ventures shuttle us, and also use them for the weeklong support. However you can pay for a shuttle ride with them or other companies as an option at the end of the ride. We choose to park at the end. Shuttle to the start and bike back to our car

I have a few questions:
1. What bag duffel (liters?) do you recommend
2. I notice you brought your own tent, do you suggest that or rather rent from PBV? I’m going to be doing my first Ragbrai solo next year and was wondering what size tent I should bring or rent from PBV
3. Do you have any recommendations of what to bring in the duffels vs what you regret bringing?

So we just used our stand up paddle board bags, which did well, but did get a little roughed up. We may used them again next year, but many people had duffel bags which seemed to work great.
I think our bag dimensions were
40x20x11.5
But again, if we didn’t have those to just save money from purchasing, we would have went with a duffle bag
We aren’t sure about the tent. We actually didn’t find it hard to set it up each night and a lot of the campsites we enjoyed putting our tent up away from the crowd for some quiet. However debating going with their tent service next year for one main reason. It takes about 30 minutes each night to find our bags and then set up our tent and 30 in the morning. That adds up when you are exhausted and want as much time to relax like you would with the tent service.
PBV has double occupancy tents so one person would be comfy. Otherwise, our tent was a 6 person lol, but that’s just what we own and made it work. One of the larger on the ride, but we had space to chill. If we didn’t have a tent and had to purchase, a 3 person would of fit us great.
We recommend a light sweatshirt or pants. It was oddly cool last Ragbrai at night and I slept in my sweatshirt a couple nights. I liked our headlamps, some well sealed non leakable snacks (no ants), and I brought a hat, and maybe some muscle rub like icyhot.
Regret bringing: portable peanut butters that opened up in transport and got all over, too many clothes, I just wore the socks I went to bed in for the next day, and bought a couple shirts and wore them. Just not over packing. Otherwise, we didn’t really over pack to much.
But we wish we had a warmer blanket on those cold nights. Not sure how common those are but this last Ragbrai it was nightly

which ebike do you ride? my husband wants us to ride in 2026!
Hi, so Kari has the Specialized Turbo Vado 4.0. It is a heavier bike, but with her training and not using the battery all the time she was able to get by with just one battery and charge nightly with the charter service. And awesome! Hope you make it out to ride.
I thought Pork Belly set up the tents for you before you got to the town? Did you see any other e bikes? Got thru the day with only one battery?
Pork belly does offer tent service however we opted to bring our own this year. They sold out quickly for tent service. We saw multiple other e bikes during Ragbrai and several that were with pork belly. I heard from others that they had multiple batteries, however my wife made every single day with only a single battery charge. She did often turn the power off though to conserve it and self pedal only.
Did she charge her bike with Pork belly or was it through another service/vendor? Wife wants to go and ride hers for 2023. Thanks!
