  • Join me on a trip to RANS headquarters in Hays, KS! We packed a lot into a couple days... shop tours, S-21 OUTBOUNDS everywhere! I was able to fly the Titan 340 and Rotax 915 powered S-21's! Also did some fun flying with my friends in KS!

    Why do I look at a well sorted S-21 and think, "You know what? I'm not so sure I'd rather build an RV-9 afer all!"
    What not to like?
    Tricicle gear if you must, tail dragger if you prefer.
    Aluminium airframe.
    Choice of a Lycoming clone in the Titan or a modern Rotax 915iS.
    You get a capable all rounder either way.

      Whilst I am here, I love the nostalgia of a J-3 Cub clone; but, what does it give you that you can't get from the S-7?

  • @АлексЛиратов
    @АлексЛиратов 4 роки тому +2

    The author of the video landed like crazy! 915 rotax even with constant speed prop is lighter than 340 titan by 40 kilograms. This is a great result, but you need to come up with a payload closer to the nose). At an altitude of 7,000 feet, the engine power is the same, but the Rotax is $ 5-7,000 more expensive. With rotax, you save a lot on gasoline prices and low fuel consumption - from a third to half of titani consumption. In general, the aircraft is not cheap, and comparable to the Glastar Sportsman 2 + 2 with Lk 360 , losing in payload and speed.

    exactly how I want one. I love this engine. the Titan is always over hyped to me. the rotax is exactly what I need

    They need to get the S-21 wrapped up so they can start on that 4 place plane I keep bugging Randy about. Make the S-21 a bit bigger and the Titan has enough power already. Or you could bump up to the +200hp Titans.
    Nice shots of Wilson Lake. BTW, be careful skimming the water when the lake is low. There are old stone fence posts that stick out sometimes. This year we have had plenty of rain, though.

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  5 років тому

      yea a 4 place would need more power... probably have to go to a 540 to really make it perform (if you want it to actually be usable with 4 adults).. would be a sick bird though.. and probably a decent market for it not a lot of 4 seat experimental out there...

    • @AlyxGnosis

      @@GravityKnightFlying With a 540 it'd definitely be a strong competitor to the Bearhawk 4-place with a 540 in it -- that plane performs extremely well.

      If Vans survive, a four place aluminium Rans will go head to head with the proposed RV-15.
      I know Randy took on the RV-12 head to head with the S-19, but would you take on Vans again?

      very smooth.. and does sound a lot like a turbine! ... my Edge Performance fuel injected turbo 912 in my current S7 is quite smooth... more so than a standard 912/914, but I have to say.. I believe the 915 was the smoothest aircraft engine I've ever flown... could be prop related or something else.. but it was very smooth.

    Tail dragger vs Nose wheel! Which is a better setup for a bush plane?

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  2 роки тому +1

      tailwheel almost always (in most cases). obviously some taildraggers aren't suited for bush flying, and there are a few tri gear planes that do it pretty well.. but overall, TW hands down. That's why I made the transition, and it opened up a LOT of new spots for me to land.. thx

    Thanks for the video! I’m thinking of building a plane and the outbound is definitely on my list. I think I would still prefer the titan though for simplicity and in truth sound. I think airplane engines should rumble! I can’t help but think Rans could take this platform and up size it to 4 place with the bigger titan and have something competitive in the C 180 range for way less cost. Call it an S41 for four place!

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  4 роки тому

      thanks for watching! the 915 sounds better than previous rotax's - sounds like a turbine! but I do understand the sound preference of the titan, I get that.. the titan sounds awesome! .... i hope to see a 4 person experimental offering someday too, I think they could offer a really great plane in that category.. there isn't many 4+ seat experimental out there.

    At 9:01, what are we looking at, dual fuel pumps? Lots of extra "stuff" needed for that engine, just saying. At 9:28, I really like the way they tucked the aileron control cables in tighter, as compared to my S-7S. I have only Randy to blame for my general lack of interest in the 20 and the 21, as after 22 years and 3800 hours, there is still nothing else out there I want to fly then my current S-7S! But is great to see the company continuing to come out with great products. Good job GK!

      Yea, that's the dual pump setup for the 915. No lack of complication on the 915. I mean it has a lot of power, was smooth and quiet and very impressive, but man there is a lot of sensors, and electronics on that engine.... always a bit worrisome. Hey I don't blame you there, the 7 is the best thing I've ever flown as well - Love it! Love to have one.. trying to figure out how to do that. Thanks Tom!

    • @portnuefflyer
      @portnuefflyer 5 років тому

      Lot's of compromises with a folding wing design, I don't blame Randy for not going down that path. Most pilots are not that interested in the concept. This comes from a former Kitfox pilot, so yeah I know how handy it can be in certain situations. In a perfect world, my S-7S's wings would fold as quick as my Kitfox 1 did, but all you have to do is look at the wing chord on a Kitfox, Highlander, etc., and you can see it ain't going to happen with the much broader chord wing that Randy (and I) orefer.

      I'm not sure BRS is needed for these types of aircraft just because low stall speeds, and landing speeds land it anywhere with the big tires. 915 is way overpriced hopefully Yamaha will produce a turbocharged aviation engine only time will tell.

    • @GravityKnightFlying
      @GravityKnightFlying  3 роки тому +1

      I don't disagree with you. If it came in around 30k, I think that would be much more reasonable. But I will also say this. The 915 has some impressive redundancies that no other electronically fuel injected / turbocharged engine has. Period. In a sense, it's pretty break through. It's also turbine smooth. So far, it has a very good track record. With that being said, there is a few things I dislike... small complaints really. And it is a bit heavier than would be nice. The issues I see with Yamaha, is that if they got into the aviation game, their prices would also skyrocket. Unfortunately it's the nature of things. Look at the cost of 1940's technology, inefficient, heavy Lycomings and Continentals. Nothing against them, I would fly behind a Lycoming. They work. But they are quite expensive considering. I think very highly of Yamaha! Love to see them bring out something.. but doubt we will unfortunately. Good topic though

      They have an extended version of the 141 wing (155 I believe it comes out to) ... 16" longer on each side. It's still technically in testing right now as to why it's not on the website etc. Several prototype things on that 915 bird. Once finalized it will be an option on the order forms I'm sure.
