In the early '80's I worked for a commuter airline and flew Metro-liners through Hays. Randy had a basic bare bones ultra-light sitting in the tie down area. I asked our ground agent whats up with the ultra light. He said thats Randy's, he's just playing around. He's really a bicycle guy. I think Randy has come a long way. Great looking line of airplanes.

That's my dream plane! Gonna start on the kit as soon as I get some space. I'd do the taildragger with a Rotax 915 though.
Yep, the 915 is the perfect engine for this airframe IMHO. 150 mph at 7.3 GPH with 26” Airstreaks is epic!

The new Rotax 916 would be a great engine for this plane.
Currently trying to decide between a Zenith CH750, this, and a Vans RV14.
I think an S21 with a 916 would be a great intermediate between the CH750 and a Vans RV14. 916 should have similar if not better performance than the Titan since it weighs about 80 lbs less. Guess we’ll see when they get the 916 install kit ready!
Those three airplanes have 3 completely different missions.

Nice video keep them coming. Really like that plane and can attest to the Titan 340, mine is fuel injected with P-Mags and I love it. Had 2 planes with Rotax 912 S engines and the only thing I miss is the 5gph vs 8gph (down low). Cannot beat the rate of climb with the 340!😎
The Rotax 915 climbs better once you hit 5,000ft and it’s 75 pounds lighter so a great option for those who live up high.

Where can I find that music?
Nice clean functional looking aircraft. What is the rolling requirement in and out with the big motor? I REALLY like the transparent door and large overhead window, both for pilot visibility and viewing the ground and the usually blind upward visibility in a high wing.
An upward looking camera with a proximity detector that screens (split maybe?) automatically when triggered would be cool, if possible (I see you have the massive window..GREAT) but even then, how often do pilots look up when clearing/scanning? That collision doesn't happen often, but if it saved even one or two pilots, and passengers, it might be worth it. As I'm not aware of interconnectability functionality of the display to non system peripherals, excuse if a stupid question.
Music could go, not really enhancing anything, more of an irritant...I actually like to HEAR the aircraft sounds, even if damped down to allow speaking clearly over them, like you would hear in a headset. On the ground spoken portions, with the aircraft taxiing, you could mic the audio speaking very softly, and lip sync over the suppressed aircraft audio. I know, more work, and everyone's a critic, right? OW, excellent vid. ;-)
Guess I should mosey on over to Deland, since it's only about a 1/2 hour, or so, for the showcase. The homebuilts seem to have virtually disappeared from the Sun N Fun, and I miss them, as I was a LongEZ builder, so that aspect appeals, as well. Got to Oshkosh once, should do that again, too.

The top wind has become very popular in many aircraft designers. Even the old Cessna 152's had an option for windows above. It's a small space... windows make it feel open and airy :-) MUSIC? It is hard to please everyone. Honestly... I should have GoPro cameras set up for these type of flight. I DID NOT. I am working to gain more equipment in my arsenal of cameras so I can capture in flight interviews/reviews. We are growing. Tight budget however. SEE YOU IN DELAND in January! :-)

He Bryan, we saw the tricycle gear S21 but you didn’t mention the gross weight of the aircraft with the Rotax engine. Also could you do an episode of the weight difference of the configuration from steam gauges and glass cockpit. I know there had to be some difference but just exactly how much savings in weight? And maybe throw in the costs along with that evaluation too. Just an idea.... take care. Now I’m going to watch your Ran’s tour.
Gross weight with the 912 ULS or 915 iS is 1,800 pounds as well. If it’s a factory built LSA then your gross weight is capped at 1,320 pounds.
Andrew Morris - I don’t think I hear him say LSA. And weight increases with chute & floats. I didn’t hear anything about the 912 description
John Paul Lafferty They offer the 912 ULS, 915 iS, and Titan engine options for their SLSA engine choices. Most are electing to do EAB to take advantage of the higher gross weight of 1,800 pounds legally.

Andrew Morris - I guess the question is the model with the Rotax a different wing loaded structure & fuselage weight. Or is Ran’s only offering the same aircraft with just lower horsepower and limiting the LSA weight. As an design engineer to me you would be caring a lot more metal unnecessarily to accommodating a 100 horsepower Rotax. Fuselage & wings especially if I’m looking for an empty gross weight of around 700lbs.
If only the S-21 wings folded! I contacted Randy when the S-20 Raven came out and asked him if the wings would be able to fold. He replied, "You're in luck! There won't be one, but TWO wing folding options offered on the S-20!" RANS followed through with neither.
Sorry. Maybe it complicated the fuel systems or the demand to cost wasn't worth the effort.

Do the wings fold on the S20 or S21? If not thats kind of a deal buster for me. I want to store the plane on my property in a trailer. Overall it seems like best
Kit plane. I have heard the kit doesn't require as much refinement like the KITFOX.
The KIT is very much finished and high quality. I am very impressed. Unfortunately the wings DO NOT fold on these models.

I thought of that cam when rear view cameras came into use on cars. It’s too good an idea not to use on any taildragger! Did the tri gear actually have a reverse pitch prop?
YES....the camera is an EXCELLENT idea! NO.... there is no "BETA" reverse prop option. I was just making light of I need tailwheel training and marginally fly trigear. My attempt to be funny failed. Thanks! (Just kidding) THANK YOU for taking the time to watch! I appreciate you!

I’ve made many long distance trips (700+ miles). It’s very comfortable and with the right setup is a great cross country machine!

It actually has a VERY wide envelope to fly as far as speed range. And the VNE is 215mph! Wow! I think it gets down into the low 40's. With some VG's probably into the 30's. How slow are you looking to go? Thanks for saying hello!

i like the tri gear better... how do they perform in rough terrain? i know the P-39 had three gears and ran in all kinds of messed up run ways.
You stated 1800 grooms but all the plane pictures say light sport. Could you expand on that please?
It can be built as an LSA (using the 100HP Rotax 912UL) or as an Experimental. You register the Gross Weight as the builder and depending on how you build it.
What size tires are on the trike? Are the mains 850x6 and the nose an 800x6?

What was your rate of climb on that day with the 912is ?
TRUTH.... I don't remember as I wasn't paying attention. Flying the S-21 Tailwheel Titan 180HP I was flying from the right seat and really in shock of the climb. When we switched to the S-21 Trigear I was flying PIC left seat, flying a "stick" (vs yoke) for the first time in a long while, flying a Rotax (first time ever...watching the higher RPM range)...so I was focusing on airspeed and simply flying the plane. My guess is 800-1,000fpm. Thank You for watching!
I think the spring gear looks better than the bungee systems.
love the range and speed, but I'm surprised its over 300ft takeoff and land. other stol in this range like highlander are half that. I'm assuming because of more fuel and all but just a bit suprised. I wonder if this could be modified to keep that range but drop to the under 200ft ground range.
Those others aren’t even coming close to a VC of 155 tho...
@@Captndarty very true and that is why this is still my top choice. I do wonder if we can get the stol characteristics a bit better without loosing too much on the top end.
@@TheArchitectJC perhaps VG’s? I know the larger wing they tested gave up more on top than you gained down low so Randy nixed it. Most planes aren’t at gross all the time so 325’ really is super short. Most planes that take off in half that distance are doing so with hundreds of feet to spare...
@@Captndarty again why its not a deal breaker. I don't care about competitions so that is plenty short for me. I wonder if they offered leading edge slats that would do a lot. I'm sure just some good tires and break, VGs, and not flying at full load would be fine. it would be nice to get the on paper number down to under 200, but I do want to use it to go places so a good cruise and efficiency is important to me. if I want to be super nit picky, a 3rd seat option would be nice too but I know thats more of a redesign thing.

@@ExperimentalAircraftChannel the easy way to avoid that problem is to cut down on music use - or at least set the volume lower than the voice part, not the other way around :) - Good video otherwise!
