- I ran the Leadville 100 last year and crawled to the finish line. It hurt, bad. This year I trained quite a bit more in an effort to finish strong. This video is an account of my experience, and all the ups and downs along the way.

Oh boy this was a DOOZY! Leadville DID NOT go as planned, but I’m super thankful for the journey. Years of tough adventures prepared me well for this sufferfest. Let’s do it again 😂😂
u r already a winner coz u enjoy the simple things in life: a dirt road with pines and a view ... oh plus not to forget after all ur running / biking ur body still allows u to go on these adventures... it took me 20 years to ruin my body so that I cannot even run a mile ... thank goodness for bikes 🤣🤣🤣 oh and yeah positive thinking...
Wow!’
Great video Ryan, Amelia is so happy and you can tell she loves you so much, two great energy together, both of you are in a great happy place.
Going to do 22K Night run soon looking forward to it
🇺🇸🙏😁🏴
Okay seeing this before watching I was so anxious and sad while you were hurting because I thought you might not finish. Great job kicking butt out there!!
Great race Ryan. That was a roller coaster of emotions for me just watching from my couch! I know the pain cave well and felt for you. One of your best videos ever 🙂And Amelia is a ray of sunshine. You're a great couple. looking forward to next years Leadville video!
I started riding mountain bike and you've kept me interested in keeping it up I appreciate your videos and your attitude man thank you
Let’s do it again next year! ❤
Ok deal!
@@duzer and than you can take her for a Baja continental divide 🤷🏻♂️. 😂🤣😆 just kidding @Amelia 🤪🤪
Dude I’m seriously so impressed by the combo of your attitude + athleticism + filming ability all into one. Awesome to run into you again and congrats on an amazing finish 🎉
Great seeing you this summer in Leadville! Let’s do it again sometime :)
@@duzer Hopefully faster (for me) next time🤣
Yay Ryan! Your positivity is positively the best medicine and its free for anyone that needs a boost in their life. Take two VanDuzer video's and call me in the morning, you'll feel much better :)
Right on!!
So glad you found Amelia and you can pace each other through life. Laid up with a bad knee so you go for it!The scenery would boost anyones mood.
I got so stoked when Scott was your final pacer! So epic! Thank you for sharing this experience with us Ryan! You did amazing! Woooooo!
Oh wow, getting paced by Scott Jurek. How cool is that! And always great to see Amelia. Well done everybody. Love the vibes.
I was lucky to have the dream team
You’re the man Ryan! It’s funny that watching you cross that finish line actually choked me up a bit. You’re an inspiration bud. My favorite part of your video was when you said, “remember that we get to do this.” Oh man sometimes that’s hard to live by. My mom used to love to run. She got MS when she was in her 30s and I never actually got to see her run but my brothers always tell me about it. They used to ride by her side on their little bikes. She lost something that she loved. As long as God has us here and we have the health to keep going we have to remember we get to enjoy this beautiful life. God bless you brother! Keep it up and maybe someday we’ll cross paths on the trail.
So we’ll said! Thank you for sharing your story…we never know what tomorrow will bring, so we gotta live it up today. Cheers
Inspiring mate! Watching your bike touring videos has helped me get off my butt and get on my bike, I’m now 82 pounds down and heading for a 100! Keep it buddy😀🤘👍💪
Alright Rusty!!!! Consistency is the key!
That's amazing!! You're gonna rock those 100 miles!! WAY TO GO
Good job man. Very impressive.
I will adamantly declare that I am full bike and always will be. All you runners are crazy. That being said, the emotions and messages in this are some of your best work. I went through the rollercoaster with ya. Goosebumps, tears, gratitude. Long time watcher, and thanks for continuing to inspire
The word you kept on using: "Grateful." Yep, that's the way to achieving resilience and overcoming negative thoughts. A lesson for us all. Way to go Ryan.
I wish for everyone to have an Amelia in his/her life. Someone rock solid in who they are that they selflessly support those in their life who are also going after great things!
Word
Respect Dude 👊🏻 What a turn around! Struggling so much at the beginning but keeping the strong vibes to push to such an awesome finish 👍🏻
It took every bit of me to make this happen, felt so good to put it all out there
It is a privilege to be able to choose your suffering. We are blessed. GO DUZER
My daughter just ran her first 50 mile race yesterday in Steamboats Run Rabbit Run. Coming in 52nd overall and 5th in her category which made me extremely proud. I know the determination and training it takes and you are the perfect example of what it takes to do great things. I only talked to my daughter briefly after the race but am excited to hear her story but she is already talking about the next challenge. Thanks for sharing and providing such inspiration. She did say her favorite part was all the conversations she had on the trail..
That's awesome! Run Rabbit seems like a very tough course, she rocked it!
Our beautiful day just got a little more glorious! Big love to you and yours, thank you all so much for the genuine goodness!!
Hey Ryan it was a pleasure running some miles with you and Amelia!
Huge congrats on shaving off a lot of time from last year, love the video too!
Leo!!! Meeting you was a highlight of the day! Hope to see you down the road again
A man among men! Well done on that race!!
I’m not crying, you’re crying. So inspiring again. Congrats Ryan. Huge!
I don’t know how you kept going. Even more so, I don’t know how people that aren’t as positive as you are kept going. Amazing, Ryan.
I have never laughed so much while watching an ultra. Your attitude and support from your community is so inspiring! Pushing through the hard times and coming out with a better time than last year. Congratulations and thank you!!
Thank you!! This one pushed me to the edge
Great day out Ryan. Thanks for the opportunity of joining you.
It sure was!
Beautiful video. I can’t believe you were able to finish so strong after a really hard slug. I love seeing you be motivated by people - either volunteers or your team. Congrats on an epic finish.
Mr. Duzer, I am so very happy for you beating your time last year! As you were running down the home stretch, I could help but to smile and shed tears of joy for YOU. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much for your contribution!!!! and thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it.
The Bullduzer! Ain’t nothing stopping you. Amazing man. Congrats!
You did it. That was surreal having such a legend get you to the finish. Watching your videos makes me want another ultra. My struggles are different, but I want it as badly as you wouldn't let yourself quit. I want to give my autoimmune disease a big middle finger and do it, maybe 50 miles.
My man!! I hope that you can someday make it happen again. You’re a strong dude, always have been
God I don't know how you did it you put on a brave happy face on the outside whilst you would dying on the inside.
You're so lucky to have some beautiful people supporting you
I recently did my first road marathon here in Colombia, the Medellin Marathon. It’s so impressive you can run that far.
Congrats!!! 26 miles is a great accomplishment
just got back from riding a 100 miler on my bike and I am shattered. Watching this video shows me what true suffering is and it was not my ride today. I teared up when you cross the line and she welcomes you home. Great video as usual Mr. Van Duzer :)
Thanks, Jon...100 miles on a bike is a big accomplishment as well. WAY TO GO!
When you have Amelia Boone and Scott Jurek as pacers, you know you are an elite badass. Well done Duzer!
Well, they certainly are..😂 I’m just lucky
This is literally insane! Props to you man because this is something I didn’t even know was humanly possible! Especially crazy because i can’t even run a mile hahah. Good work 👍🏼👍🏼
haha, I bet you can run a mile, especially if a bear is chasing you ;)
@@duzer 😂😂I would hope i could pull it out of the bag in that circumstance 🐻
Wow, thank you for that. My younger brother is an ultra-runner. I'm always amazed at these kinds of events. It's a wonderful sport.
Thank you Ryan for again bringing your positive energy! I keep thinking I need to channel my inner RD energy! Great job! 🙌 Keep it up.
Positive energy is how I get through most hard things :)
Ryan, you must be the most influential, positive, tough and beautiful person I have the pleasure of sharing your life with, it’s a credit to you for sharing all with us
I'm going through a lot of issues right now and your videos keep my head up. Crap, I think I've seen just about your entire catalog. Started with the Honduras trip and that remains one of my favorites. So glad you and Amelia found each other. 2 massively awesome people creating a union that ascends to whatever level is beyond awesome. Supernatural? Just keep going, bud. Best channel out there!
pain is temporary but glory is forever
True!
Thanks for sharing your journey. Way to power through the pain cave and low spots.
Great memories Ryan! What a day that was! Leadville is so special and it was great to run with you one the trail! See you next year!
Thanks for the light you bring to our world. ❤
Go Ryan! I'm glad I found your channel.
I’m glad, too!! Welcome
Congratulations on accomplishing another Leadville. It's amazing to have such an awesome support network. Congratulations on your one anniversary with Amelia. I hope things continue to look up for you, Ryan.
Thank you so much! This was a big day in so many ways
@@duzer It was a big day. I think you have to have more confidence in yourself. You dropped from the 90s to the 50s. And came in 34th, I think that's remarkable. And having such a supportive girl friend like Amelia makes it worth it.
Congratulations Ryan, thank you for letting me tag along, hope to see you again.
This was a tear jerker for me because I absolutely hate to see someone I love in Pain. I stuck with you until the end Ryan VD! Always will.
Thanks for sticking with me, I really appreciate it. You're so sweet!
Awesome Ryan!! Beating last year's time and sprinting at the finish brought happy tears! You did them all so well - running, filming and maintaining a positive attitude throughout - Very inspiring to all of us!
Thank you, Arun! It was a special day
Thank you so much brother. I feel like crying. Your heart and wisdom, real hard-earned wisdom is so much deeper than positivity these days, it's about being vulnerable and brave and just one foot in front of the other and making sure you feed off of good community human beings and hearts and give so much back at the same time. So much. I'm having a hard time right now, and this video is something I watched while in my sad cave, and now I'm following your exhortation at the end there and getting off the couch and getting outside. I love you brother. ~ Waylon
Also: Amelia, that moment-I'm so happy for you two and so happy to get to witness some of your journey together.
Thank you my dear friend, your words and wisdom always mean so much to me. Lemme know if I can help you get out of the sad cave
Congratulations Ryan. You’re so blessed to have great people around you. You’re an inspiration. I’m going to go to the gym tomorrow and get on the treadmill 😂.
I LOOOOOVE you energy!!! You Go Ryan!!!
"Scott's out poopin' in the woods..." 🤣 Nice job! Just expending the extra energy it takes to record this is impressive.
Wow!! We really loved that video. So well produced…and to see you two together makes Marsha and I so happy. Cheers
Thank Alan!! I hope that you both had a wonderful summer. I’m sending hugs to the both of you
Good job not letting the negative thoughts over take you and kudos to Scott Jurek for pacing you. I’m sure you got plenty of energy from him to finish strong. Really enjoyed your video.
Youre amazing! And I knew when I saw Amelia with you in last year's Leadville that magic was gonna happen!! So glad for you two. ❤
I like the Term You Use! The Pain Cave! I've been there Brother 😎✌️🙏❤️
It’s a dark place…but there’s always a way out
I came here from Burning Man video and thought you amazing then. this was a different thing! Watched it all which is really unusual for a longer UA-cam video for me. Thank you for doing this. Inspired. Best wishes.
Thank you for inspiring me. I've been in a dark place for quite a while now but am finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I've had medical problems for quite a while , not to mention having a doctor give me the runaround, but finally found a doctor that could help me. I'm now on day 30 of recovering from inguinal hernia surgery and after watching your video I realized I need a goal. So I've decided to (in a couple of weeks) begin training for the Hotter than Hell 100 mile bike race(ride) here in Texas. As an avid cyclist I've always wanted to ride it. If your interested in hot bike rides with a bunch of lunatics you should come out for the fun. It will be sometime next August. Once again thanks for all you do to inspire us all.
Airborne all the way
Kevin
Ryan, congrats and thanks for keeping it real. It IS a privilege to do hard stuff. Best to you and the entire crew!
that first half felt so hard for you but the 37:00 min mark running through the Aspen pass with Amelia .. that felt like the seminal moment when it changed for you . The end of the run with Scott with the ending music was magic... I am amazed how you are so brave to let all the world see and feel the beating of your heart.. Congrats on awesome race
Wow! So much fun to watch. You had quite the superstar pacers in Amelia and Scott, ultra royalty. Great job Ryan, I am so proud of you!
Thank you Joanne! I was very fortunate to have a dream team with me
Congratulations, Duzer!!! I got goosebumps when you posted your final time and position, knowing how you were feeling earlier on and how you persevered through the pain and punishment you must have endured. What an incredible journey that must have been. Thank you for sharing it with us!
I've never heard of this before, but you kept on trucking along no matter how down you were feeling. You are such an inspiration to watch Ryan and I enjoy watching your running adventures! ☺️👟 I love too that that's how you met Amelia. She was running by your side and that turned into something beautiful in the end. 🥰
You are such an inspiration to so many people, thank you for sharing your journey with us
Oh my god, that was fantastic . Ryan, you are so awesome. You smile even when you are struggling. I love your videos. You are so inspiring. The moment I saw Scot pacing you, I was clapping my hands. Way to go!!!
Thanks, Chaya! I was so glad to have Scott come in at the end. His wisdom was very helpful in those final miles
Super inspiring Ryan. So impressive how you worked through the tough parts and so awesome to watch Amelia help and coach you to a positive mental space.
I can't imagine running 100 miles. Nice job!
Massive effort, great result!!thanks for the juice Ryan!!sure you will rock it next yr.!😉👌❤
Thanks! This was one of the hardest things that I've ever done!
I always find myself coming back to your channel for motivation and good vibes. I appreciate you and positivity. Cheers and thanks!
As a multiple Leadville finisher it was wonderful watching your experience!
I'm glad that this video could take you back!
Well done Ryan. That was so inspiring. Your video was really helpful to me. I have been feeling really depressed lately. It was just what I needed. Thank you.
And great to see Amelia again. She's a champ!
Ryan. you are a goddamn behemoth of an inspiration!
The mental aspect of an endurance event is absolutely vital as you felt it now. The fact that you were not feeling great at the start and well into the race but still kept on is a testament to your mental strength. Also the fact that you were ahead of your previous time every single step of the race is a sign that sometimes you just need to shut the brain off for a second and let the body do its thing!
I know I can transfer all this mental aspect of running ultras into endurance riding. I cant fathom running for almost 23 hours. You have to be in some serious shape to be able to pull that off and come out smiling. I hope you realize the fact that you just shut down your paincave...at least until you try for an even longer distance... ;)
I always find it amazing that we have plans and God says" about that yea not what you think." and we are forced to grow. Great job Ryan, on the positive you did better then last year.
Amazing is an understatement. Ryan your so inspirational. You make me want to push myself beyond my perceived limits- thank you, thank you, thank you
WOW!! Duze, you DID AWESOME!! Proud of you brother!! When I saw that you and Ameila are together, I just said out loud: "WHOA, She's a Rock Star herself"!! I read about her in a TrailRunner magazine article. She's amazing!! Glad you are in her life!! Scott is another 'Rock-Star"!! A great guy!! I 'think' I ran into him on the Maxon Trail in the Sierra's in 2003 while back packing. He asked me for "how it was to Florence Lake" and that he hurt his knee. I think it was him? I'm sitting at my desktop tapping this out while using my 'tens unit' for a hip injury and wishing I could run and see the all the people on the canal path I know here in Chandler, Az!! Thanks Duze! You are awesome!!
I love that Dana says ‘I am so glad you are here.’ What a great thing to say to people! I am going to start saying that more often
Dana always knows what to say
Thanks for taking me along on your adventure. Good job buddy. Much respect.
Starting weak and finishing strong. You definitely got the adventure that you wanted. Good stuff
I sure did! This was one of the most exciting days of my life
I haven’t watched the whole video yet but I love Amelia! She is such a happy girl! ❤ ETA: I’m so proud if you too. Scott really came through at the end. Good man Scott!
Yep... no doubt about it... you are totally crazy! Wish I was half as crazy as you are!
I love your videos… they inspire me and make me cry at the end… this one really touched my heart I’m so happy for you and Amelia…thank you for sharing the adventures
I respect you and admire what you are doing to show what people are capable of. At the same time sharing the painful reality of a hundred miler. I cranked out two bike packing trips this summer and both were hard in their own way. I to know that I need to now get on the trainer and get my butt in even better shape for 2023 trips. I will be watching your videos to keep me going.
Thanks, Bruce. These big races are quite a test...Great to hear that you got out for a couple trips last year!
Ryan. I’ve got tears in my eyes watching you finish the Leadville 100. This is such an awesome endurance event accomplishment. The fact that you kept putting one foot in-front of the other when you felt pretty crappy is a testament to your mindfulness and persistence. Your support crew is amazing and it’s so fun to see Dana and Amelia and others by your side. I think they were the key to your amazing finish. Congrats and all the best!!!
Hey man, that took a lot of courage, well done you sir..👏👏👏
You SCARED me when I jumped to the comments before the end. How did it "not go as planned"? That made me think you would have an injury, keeping you from finishing. Duzer, you shaved an hour off your time. Way to go man, great finish, way to go support team.
Congrats on a great finish and thanks for the video, well done! Imagine running portions of a race with Harvey Lewis, Maggie Guterl and Hulk Hogan! Awesome...
Been eagerly waiting for this video. I already cheated and looked up the results to see how you did. Another great finish and accomplishment.
Wow Ryan, I feel like I got to know you as you brought us along with you on the journey, much of which was a sufferfest. I’m not an athlete who does this sort of thing but I’ve had my Leadvilles in life, and I cried happy tears to see you lean into your love of self and also your love with Amelia your awesome group of pals. You did great and did not repeat the past! There’s so much to learn about yourself from this great victory. Our pasts do not define our futures! Isn’t that great! And I’m grateful for your rich lesson about staying in the moment, in the beauty and being thankful for all of it. This was my favorite of all your videos. Many thanks and congrats.
Wow. Great vid Ryan! Holding that camera must have been tough.
Getting that second wind was awesome. The human mind/body is so mysterious isnt it?!
19hrs 59 seconds next year! Woo Hoo!
I believe u when u say I can run faster 💪
Without a camera in hand I think u can make top 10 bud 🙏 keep up the great work and being true to yurself! Many blessings 🙌
Good for you Ryan... I just took up biking and you are correct.... the legs work differently as a runner vs a biker!! Keep up the good work making wonderful video adventures. Inspirational!
You Both Are Baddass Brother 🙏✌️❤️
great job ryan-----what great support --and love you have from amelia! you are a lucky man to have her.....great job fighting thru doubts at the leadville
I’ve basically watched all your race videos over the last few days! Great job! Thanks for sharing your journey. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for taking a look at my race vids!
I loved this video... it brought tears to my eyes. Your story with Amelia is beautiful, the scenery was fantastic, and we really got a sense of the pain and mental struggle of ultra racing.
Thanks, Ryan! It was a day with just about every emotion!!
Love you Duzer. Absolute LEGEND
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing the more challenging mental/physical side of ultra running!! I can’t tell you how many times I go for a ride on that struggle bus during my races, but I have faith I will eventually get off. You had 2 amazing pacers to get you through your journey and you finished like a champ!! Congratulations and way to go! I love your videos. Keep on running, my friend.
As the saying goes, "dare to struggle, dare to win"! You got this Ryan!!
Thanks!! Got me through another covid quarantine stuck in the office away from the family! Got the go ahead to enter the lottery for my first 50miler next fall on the SHT in MN!
THANK YOU!!! Best of luck in your 50k!! YOU ARE AWESOME!
Great story, fantastic finish and really an awesome way you two met in this race, that is really special.
Oh, Ryan. Congrats! You are an amazing person, an inspiration. I adore your videos. This time it made me cry tears of joy at the end. Your mindset is so great. You are awesome. Thank you for making this videos. Thank you and congrats. Ps: you have the coolest girl ever. Don't let her go.
This is an inspiration, Duze! Im having my first trail marathon tomorrow, and im gonna be thinking about this video while I run my way through.
Ryan, thank you for helping to inspire me. I appreciate your enthusiasm and energetic demeanor! I wish you all the best in 2023!
Same to you!
Thank You! Great inspiration. I had my left knee replaced six weeks ago, and still painful and working on my range of motion. Got in 20 minutes on the rowing machine and another 20 minutes o the bike (fitted to Wahoo Kickr). I kept thinking I would stop after a minute of cycling, but you kept me going! I just could stop until you made it across the finish line! Keep Moving!
Glad your doing well!
I got a full new Ti knee in 2015. I'm 65 years old and I'm sure that I'm now going better on bike than when I was 30. I wasnt fast then really, but I ride all the time now. The more I ride the better I feel, 150 to 170 miles a week mostly. I dont even feel the knee, its the last thing on my mind on long climbs. Good Luck!
You really lift the spirits even from the other side of the world. ❤
Glad to hear it!!
