I picked one of these up along with the snes classic shortly after the snes version came out. I had to sell both along with 95+% of my collection a little over a year ago to cover medical bills. I was devastated. I finally was able to pick the nes classic back up tonight and I’m so beyond excited. Hoping to be able to get the snes classic again soon!
Nice work John! Your enthusiasm is what makes your videos so fun to watch. The NES was certainly before my time, however I think this is a great way to experience some of these games without having to invest the time and effort into picking them up individually. Particularly for someone who doesn't collect NES.
going to start falling asleep to your playlists, so the commercials won't be skipped and hopefully you'll get paid a few bucks!!! Thnx for the great channel broski !😁
You sold me man. I’m getting one of these asap! The original Mario Bro’s alone makes this thing worth it. Everything else makes it an outstanding value. I’m about to be like a kid in a candy store. Thanks for posting! 🎉🎊🏆
Cool video, John! I always enjoy your enthusiastic and detailed perspective. I kind of want one of these now, because I don't own a television but I think I can plug it into my computer monitor.
Solid review! Thanks John. I love your videos and appreciate your enthusiasm for retro gaming. Great tip on using the Wii pro controllers. Will be getting a Nes Mini soon hopefully!
Great review John 🙂 I enjoy your videos. I wanted to get a NES classic when they came out originally, but I wasn't fast enough and saw the scalpers raise the prices to double the retail prices. I got a raspberry pi 3b+ instead in 2019 and didn't have a problem buying that. I threw every game I wanted on there and it's great. I was kinda hoping Nintendo would have made a Gameboy classic or N64 classic.
Sweet. I also did an unboxing for the UK version, as mentioned in comments below, there is no poster or power unit included for the UK model. Although 60hz is quite the upgrade over the 50hz versions we had.
Wow I am glad I pre-ordered this when it was first announced...got mine ages ago but wow-wee looking at the jacked prices on eBay though.....man scalpers are having a field day D:
Wow awesome, I never played on the Nes, I was a sega man but I'd love to get my hands on one of these. There now selling on eBay for 250$ Australian. I'm not paying that rediculous price so I'm drooling over this video haha.
Yo Noid is something I always really enjoy going back to. It's pretty nostalgic for me but I would add that it's also one best platformers on the NES. It's a really fun Game.
We love our Nintendo Classic mini console. No complaints at all. We did wish there was an SD slot to play more games. I'm also game for another console for sure with some more new games. Either way. Hope to see another new console in the future by Nintendo. We waited until the price came down. Still a pretty tough find in the NE. Had to search several stores and we found ours at a Target. There was one Classic and one Super on the shelf. I definitely want to get the super NES , I never owned one.
I wish Nintendo went the Sega route and allowed it to include a SD card slot for ROM support. How cool would have it been if you could lift the cartridge door and insert a SD card :)
awesome....I'm still hunting for one. yes I love opening stuff too.. John do you ever let anyone come look at your game collection? I would love to take a peek!! And maybe play a couple of games.
Nope, not really. Many close friends have not even seen my collection(just have not had time) Not something I am comfortable letting people I dont know to see.
got 2 of the classic mini and both in brand new condition which i haven't opened yet. i'm thinking of opening 1 and keeping 1 in storage for collecting purposes.
I haven't bought a NES Classic yet, but I did get a SNES classic and it actually came with 2 controllers. I'm surprised that the NES only comes with 1 controller.
Next games that should come on the Nes mini: Dr Jekkyl and Mr Hyde, Bill and Ted's excellent adventure, Back to the future, Karate Kid, Cheetahmen 2, Ghostbusters, Topgun (a real classic), Any Simpson game, Buggs bunnys birthday blowout, Jaws. Some absolute wanna play topgames that should be on there, especially the Nintendonerd would be very happy!
Same here. In addition I bought a Hori Wireless Fighting Commando to complement the system. I also used hakchi and put all the NES games on it. Like John Hancock I now too own the whole NES library albeit in digital form. I am now in the process of trimming them down as some of the games are not worth playing. The games that it comes with are pretty good. The only additions at the moment that I like are Kung Fu, Popeye, Dig Dug 2, Bubble Bobble part 2, Blaster Master Zero, Defender 2, Lode Runner, Rainbow Islands, Mighty Bomb Jack, Millipede, Terra Cresta, and Q Bert.
My favorite thing about the NES classic is the work done after its release on GBAtemp.net A program was written to change the default software called Hakchi, now it is version 2.0 already and the list of features it now supports are reading emulator files from inside a zip. Because it only has 300MB of memory for games, with this feature it is now possible to put the entire US library of games 700+ games on the tiny little console. I love how portable it is and how small they made it.
In case anyone has a problem with emulation, Nintendo will never be able to acquire all of the licenses again to release every Nintendo title as a digital release many companies that made Nintendo games are just simply not in existence anymore. So hoping for an expanded library is useless. When users from the GBAtemp community took apart the NES classic as a matter of fact they noticed that both the emulator and many of the Roms Nintendo put on the machines had a Jnes header at the top of the ROM. Basically Nintendo didn't research and develop their own emulator console, they didn't even bother to dump their own Roms off of original cartridges. They just went on the internet like anyone else and downloaded the pirated versions. They just coded the GUI and did a recode of JNES and a couple of features like the manual lookup. Basically we would not have the NES classic, if not for the amazing and free of charge work that people of the community put in. And we would not have all of these old games preserved forever in digital format if not for pirating.
I saw someone posted a video opening up the classic and a controller. It looks like you can probably hack the system. Chips are not covered by the globe that you can see on the at games stuff. Additionally, you probably could change out the short cord. It's not soldered but uses a ribbon cable. I will wait to get after they hack it to add roms.
I can't wait untill i can buy one myself, i already have some of these games on the nes but i would really like to play Metroid and Zelda, cause i don't got those (yet?) But they are hella expensive if i went and buy those games.
Is it worth picking up if you own a Wii U and are thinking of just picking up a few of the NES games contained on this? Is the emulation really that superior to the U's virtual console? I'm guessing this has next to zero lag since the controller is a plug-in
Well, I have all Virtual Consoles game on the Wii with HDMI adapter. I will buy the controller tho, but 30 games is not enough, just softmod your Wii or buy the VC games. They play exactly like the originals too, but with wireless controllers, more games: Neo Geo, Turbographx, C64, Arcade, SMS, Genesis, Nes, N64, Snes.. Everything on a SD card.
John, Considering you have a complete collection of genesis and near complete collection of snes library, it is safe to assume you don't think too highly of the use of rom's. Could you elaborate further on this? It is a legal grey area for sure, but with the price of the nes mini, we can really value each of the 30 games to be around $1-$2 a piece. It really costs nintendo nothing to provide 30 games, i know konami games require licenses and that might cost them, but with the convenience of roms , don't you think its extortionate for nintendo to charge $5 for these nes games on the wii u virtual console? I emulate exculsively for the convenience using original controllers with usb adapters. If i had the cash for the old games and systems, a frameister and actual storage space i would go for it. Also, i live in a PAL region and 50hz sucks, i use NTSC roms for a reason!
Stephen Gallagher I don't have an issue with people doing it, but when a official product comes out, I always support it if I can. I know it's not an option for many people.
I just beat Double Dragon 2 for the first time ever! I used the code that lets you restart the level your on. I don't consider it cheating because the only time I needed it is when the game cheated me with the platforming sections. That's where I would lose my lives. I was fine while fighting.
Are you from the UK? If so... where is my best option to be able to purchase one of these from as everywhere is sold out apart from ebay which is selling them for ridiculous money? Any info would be good people!!
Have you seen where someone is remaking Castlevania in the Unreal 4 engine? They've released a demo and if they don't get shut down first they're planning to do the whole game. It's really cool.
I'll grab one in a while when the hype dies down and they become easy to find. Since you love the NES, do you think you'd ever buy the NES TV for your collection?
i finally got my hands on a SNES classic for reg price, not sure if ill get a NES classic since the scalpers still have them all on lockdown and i will not buy one for more than nintendo msrp
Too bad you couldn't spend a little time on Final Fantasy as that was and is one of the BEST games on the NES Mini. Loved it so much that I went to a retro game store in the Village and got the GBA remake as well as the PS 1 version..
If Nintendo made a sequel to the NES classic, I think it would be the SNES classic, but now there's a program that makes it easy to modify and add more games to the NESC.. it sounds to me like Nintendo knew someone would figure this out. Another Nintendo Easter egg? Would you be willing to modify your NESC, John Hancock?
I added a bunch of ROMS to my (official) NES Classic Edition a couple years ago. However, I noticed lately that it shuts down in the middle of me trying to play it. Sometimes it shuts down after around 30 minutes and sometimes it shuts down after around only 3 minutes. This absolutely sucks. Has anyone else run into this annoying problem. Does anyone know why this keeps happening? Does anyone know how to fix this issue?? Thanks.
If they put out a snes mini with castlevania 4, dk country, both super mario worlds, super punch out, chrono trigger, mario rpg, weaponlord, super metroid and others i would pay whatever they asked. plus a cordless snes controller, oh my god thats Dreaming i know but that would rule, also the 3rd zelda game and so many others, do it nintendo, then i want to see a mini turbo graphx 16 since i never owned or got to play one
I can see why flk are excited about this but two things strike me. First it's just emulation and secondly it's not an original idea. Sega have been licensing these things for years and with those you can use carts.
This is not just emulation, it's an official Nintendo console if that's what you're talking about. And, to my knowledge, SEGA have not done their own Classic console yet? It's coming in 2019 or were you just talking about emulation? This is, I think, the first official console of its type [Classic/mini] though.
I picked one of these up along with the snes classic shortly after the snes version came out. I had to sell both along with 95+% of my collection a little over a year ago to cover medical bills. I was devastated. I finally was able to pick the nes classic back up tonight and I’m so beyond excited. Hoping to be able to get the snes classic again soon!
no disrespect, but i LOL'd when he said, "EXCITABIKE".
he's probably said that since 85, but it's not like it wouldn't come up in 30 years.
Florence O'Doyle Sounds like a pronunciation in an old Japanese commericial. Excite-uh-bike!
Jeremy Seal yes!!!
Hilarious 😄
It's a me! Excitabike!
Nice work John! Your enthusiasm is what makes your videos so fun to watch. Better than watching classic games is watching a gamer of class playing them. Thanks John!
p s. The IJH is a nice acronym for you
You sold me man. I’m getting one of these asap! The original Mario Bro’s alone makes this thing worth it. Everything else makes it an outstanding value. I’m about to be like a kid in a candy store. Thanks for posting! 🎉🎊🏆
Glad I could help!
“EXCITABIKE”!!!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I love this guy, he’s just the best.
Classy, sweet, fun-loving gentleman.
Great review! really Takes me back in time to watch this. Im most defienetly gonna buy that console, awesome!
John has the best thumbs up to down ratio on UA-cam--keep up the good work, man!
we also rented a NES from our local Alligator Video..
it came in a big black briefcase.
Oh the memories the NES brings back.
Cool video, John! I always enjoy your enthusiastic and detailed perspective. I kind of want one of these now, because I don't own a television but I think I can plug it into my computer monitor.
Love seeing your videos, nice work John
Solid review! Thanks John. I love your videos and appreciate your enthusiasm for retro gaming. Great tip on using the Wii pro controllers. Will be getting a Nes Mini soon hopefully!
Awesome video! I hope you already used your nintendo code!!! Haha, you showed it for anyone to redeem
great unboxing video John. always enjoy your content
Love the content! Very interesting topics! Cheers! Keep em comin!
Great video, John! Thank you for making it :-)
Good video mate keep them coming jay from the UK England 🏴 👏🏾
The Immortal always has the best hats!!!
Sweet. I also did an unboxing for the UK version, as mentioned in comments below, there is no poster or power unit included for the UK model. Although 60hz is quite the upgrade over the 50hz versions we had.

it was awesome, I need one now thanks for the video
oh my god, a mini top loader is such a great idea. That means they could do the dogbone controller, I want it!
Ugh
The CRT option is really keepin it retro real.
I love that you used both pronunciations for Ninja Gaiden
I love The Immortal John Hancock!!!!
We love our Nintendo Classic mini console. No complaints at all. We did wish there was an SD slot to play more games. I'm also game for another console for sure with some more new games. Either way. I wish they made little cartridges. That would have been so cool.
you da man John Hancock
awesome....I'm still hunting for one.
yes I love opening stuff too..
John do you ever let anyone come look at your game collection?
I would love to take a peek!!
And maybe play a couple of games.
Nope, not really. Many close friends have not even seen my collection(just have not had time) Not something I am comfortable letting people I dont know to see.
John Hancock Lol, Fair enough
got 2 of the classic mini and both in brand new condition which i haven't opened yet. i'm thinking of opening 1 and keeping 1 in storage for collecting purposes.
I haven't bought a NES Classic yet, but I did get a SNES classic and it actually came with 2 controllers. I'm surprised that the NES only comes with 1 controller.
I still had NES classic edition for Christmas time yeah 2017 or 2018 overall I enjoy it 😃.
What is the tune you keep using at the start of vids? Think I know it, perhaps not, totally love it. Can anyone link it? Thanks.
Great vid J, did your capture card have trouble picking up the scanlines? I've had similar problems trying to record scanlines.
Finally got mine this weekend off of the Amazon Treasure Truck for the correct retail price.
I hope I can get one soon. are you going to get the retro-bit generations? if so hope you do a review on it
Next games that should come on the Nes mini: Dr Jekkyl and Mr Hyde, Bill

Buggs bunnys birthday blowout, Jaws. Some absolute wanna play topgames
that should be on there, especially the Nintendonerd would be very happy!
:v
Don't forget Friday the 13th, who framed roger rabbit, silver surfer, battle roads.... any LJN game for that matter
Fuck just call it the NES AVGN VERSION
Fast forward a year and a half later and I got one too. But my box has an ESRB rating on it. Interesting!
Same here. In addition I bought a Hori Wireless Fighting Commando to complement the system. I also used hakchi and put all the NES games on it. Nice mate, this is a pretty hard to find console in Australia.
''exci-teh-bike''
nintendokings yep, mess up on my part.
John Hancock It's okay. I thought it was funny.
John Hancock hey how do you have that label under your name
Should chose ''Nederlands'' as your language ;) (Im from the Netherlands)
marlb0r015 ? I don't get it
fantastic review thanks
I saw someone posted a video opening up the classic and a controller. It looks like you can probably hack the system. Chips are not covered by the globe that you can see on the at games stuff. johnsobery Do you have a hacked wii? Thats the way to go until they hack this thing. You can put all the roms on there.
Nkechiyerem Onwughara No, but the wii was made for CRT televisions. It has standard av out and you can set it to 4:3 aspect ratio.
yeap it has been done. You can now put your own roms in the mini nes
I can't wait untill i can buy one myself, i already have some of these games on the nes but i would really like to play Metroid and Zelda, cause i don't got those (yet?) But they are hella expensive if i went and buy those games.

Is it the same store that got you Magical Chase? Seems to be holding many goodies for you John. Just curious
Nope, I got the unit from a friend who bought it at Walmart
John, Considering you have a complete collection of genesis and near complete collection of snes library, it is safe to assume you don't think too highly of the use of rom's. herohunter81 I use save states in games. I know its cheating but I dont care. I can legit beat many games due to my practice on emulators.
How To Excite A Bike, tonight on John Hancock!
I wonder if you can use the controllers case to refresh an old nes controller?
I'll grab one in a while when the hype dies down and they become easy to find. Since you love the NES, do you think you'd ever buy the NES TV for your collection?
I owned one, and sold it. Not my thing or a big deal to me. More of a hassle.
Yeah they take up a bit of space and it's always a worry if I'm gonna break any of the 4 feet on it.
I hope they make an second one with only fun uncommon/ rare games.
If my PAL version doesn't have the poster, I'm going to cry.
fast forward to 2020 the nes mini is selling for 199.99 now on amazon
I had one order at Toy"R"Us and they concealed my order.
Strange how my uk Nes mini doesn't come with a plug but the us does.
i finally got my hands on a SNES classic for reg price, not sure if ill get a NES classic since the scalpers still have them all on lockdown and i will not buy one for more than nintendo msrp
Is your intro song from a video game or is it custom made?
Awesome!!!
so if you pick demo in settings is it demo only and can't save the gameplay
We need an Ex Site Ah Bike T-Shirt,Ask Metal Jesus to sell them for you.
This looks neat. I will pop into Toys r Us today and buy one! WHAT?!!
Too bad you couldn't spend a little time on Final Fantasy as that was and is one of the BEST games on the NES Mini. Loved it so much that I went to a retro game store in the Village and got the GBA remake as well as the PS 1 version..
Would love to get one of these, if Nintendo would actually make them and sell them.
John you should call your man cave The Vault.
I see tons of these now just about everywhere. I feel bad for the people that paid a fortune for these. I hate scalpers.
Great video. Please invest in a wide angle or fisheye lens. Trust me
Got one for 90 bucks..hopefully it gets sent
where can you find these systems?
I always called it excite a bike too
Love the way you pronounce excite bike
I added a bunch of ROMS to my (official) NES Classic Edition a couple years ago. However, I noticed lately that it shuts down in the middle of me trying to play it. I said "thats what she said" too many times during this video lol.
I went and had my jailbroke was definitely worth it I have a lot of fun with it highly recommended if it's jailbroken
Ninja Gaiden, great game but good luck beating it ;)

*****
ye-haw - what do you reackon

there's Bluetooth controllers on amazon for this system.. costs around 40bucks
Has anyone ever told you, that you sound like John C Reilly? Because you sound just like him 😀
Don't worry everyone nintendo announced they will ship out more during the holiday season.
I would buy every game digitially if I could. I want all the games I want, which is why I download roms.
My favorite NES Classic Edition Games is Super Mario Bros 3
what is "Excite-a-bike"? i thought it was "Excite-bike"
Excite-a-bike is when you get really excited over a bike.
marlb0r015 ohhh yeah...
Ooohbilly was here
OMG the NES Classic you have is a fake? I heard if nintendo with the golden spike logo is on the right it is a fake.
“ExcitAbike”...... what the heck?!?
It’s not Exitabike it’s Excit-Bike
You sound and look like john c reilly...!! Do you ge that a lot!??
I can see why flk are excited about this but two things strike me. First it's just emulation and secondly it's not an original idea. Sega have been licensing these things for years and with those you can use carts.
This is not just emulation, it's an official Nintendo console if that's what you're talking about. And, to my knowledge, SEGA have not done their own Classic console yet? It's coming in 2019 or were you just talking about emulation? This is, I think, the first official console of its type [Classic/mini] though.
The European Version does not have such a nice box, no Poster an no Powerunit. Only this USB Cable.
Fuelfoxx Nintendo hates America but hates you guys even more. They only like our money.
Mid February and you still can't get it at normal price............
