It’s may be hard to believe but factual! Hats off to my husband who assisted me in caring for my mother for almost 7 years. She left us in 2022. Now my sister had to transfer her job and move in with my dad in another city.

Lisa Ling Thank you for shinning the light on the cost of caring and the reality of the Home Care work force situation .
I do believe that the Home Care workers are not value because the system believe that a high education / Degrees are not required but the truth is that caring for the aging population requires a lot of patience and compassion plus specific training based on each individual case.
Also it is important to have a base pay in order for people to make living. The Home Care workers population most of the time can't afford to for rent at the end of the months.
A change needs to happen to draw people back to the Home Care domain.
Once again thank you for the segment.

That last story really hit hard, but all were important and touching. We really need people to get more active in politics. There’s gotta be a better way to deal with this issues so at home care is more affordable and the workers also get a paid well. If we could subsidize corn syrup, surely we can do the same for healthcare!

I'm a black independent CAREGIVER. I do live in just to help my children and grandchildren. I have to pay back so much in taxes this year it is terrible caregiver should not be paying so much in taxes Because I've to work overtime to pay bills and help my children/grandchildren.
LISA LING THANKS. For shedding some lights on caregivers we do need a better system.

People lack so much empathy; I’ve learned by taking care of my mother. People don’t care. It took so much out of me.

I’m a sandwich caregiver but luckily my daughter is 15 and quite independent. I have a large family that has benefited from my mother’s generosity most of her life, yet no one’s here to help. They say they’ll help but don’t.
With dementia brought on by brain cancer, her personality has changed drastically. Aggressive, forgetful and unwilling to accept help. Every day is a new struggle I couldn’t begin to describe.
I’ve been living and caring for her full time for a mere 3 months and it’s already too much. Plus over a year prior to that driving back and forth to help her. Eventually I had to leave my family, home and career behind to move in with her because she refused to leave her home.
I wouldn’t wish my experience on even my worst enemy.

Also when healthcare workers are under paid then they fail to do what is required of them. I saw it many days when my mom was in rehab and the nursing home. I had to fight for care.

There is no free resources its damn hard in this country and there are so many of us so this makes sense. Then old folks homes hardly take care of the people honestly. I love Lisa Ling she always does important journalism.

Everyone's continuing to be an ostrich w/it's head stuck in the sand, so thank you for shining a small flashlight on this subject. Watching it, though, I feel left out- the 'Sandwich Generation' you say? I had to move from Dallas to Las Vegas to care of both of my parents, one with Dementia (what type they're still testing) and one with Stage 4 Metastatic Prostate Cancer. We, of course, cannot afford $10,000+/mth for memory care stay plus another $10,000+/mth focused cancer care...most people can't. On top of that I work full-time, because I can't lose my benefits and need the money. I don't have any kids, am an only child, have never married, have no extended family living within 1000mi to help me out, and have only just found out my current back pain is from advanced Scoliosis. Just giving you the facts, not looking for any sympathy. By this misnomer's definition, I can't play in that pool, so to speak, because no kids are in my picture. I feel diminished and invalidated like I never have before (and yes, of course, I know I *choose* to feel this way). I, too, am exhausted, in pain, frustrated, stressed and money-challenged among other things to say the very least every moment of every day. I soldier on because what else am I to do- our government surely isn't helping out. What- they complied a list of resources for caregivers, really? AARP's list is more comprehensive... so Thanks, Biden? Some more thoughts- someone yesterday in the office meeting asked what are my hobbies- no time for hobbies. Respite Care just to have someone come in and bathe and wash my mother's hair twice a week costs me $280- quick math that's $14,560/year. I'm not looking for a pat on the back, here- I just wanted to shine my small little flashlight on us childless, seemingly 'lesser' caregivers. Sorry, I can't say more- I've got to go make my mother and father's dinner and make sure they actually eat it....

Employers are not receptive to allowing an employee to take off so many days to take a parent to appointments.

I really believe that a family member can care for their elderly by paying part time for a nurse to perodically check in rehab! I'm hawaiian and we were taught to take care of our elders! It's hard but so rewarding!!

You did just hear them say what money is really right and the end of each month, there is no more money. How are the supposed to be able to afford someone part time? Make it make sense

If the elder is still able-bodied and in their right mind then that’s an option (if you can afford it). Many older people need way more care than that though

Don’t do it. Don’t let your parent’s poor life decisions in never saving for retirement drag you down too. Say no.
