there is a difference between a loss and being on the losing end of one the greatest upsets in NCAA football history. i can promise other top 10 teams with losses will have none to a MAC school or lose a home game which they are favored by 28 points. there are no words which describe how horrible this was.
To Brady Quinn's point, big schools do have a target on their backs that being said, they also underestimate the small schools and they let their guard down. Now as someone who goes to NIU all I have to say is... SWEET SWEET VICTORY!!! ✌️
Ahh I will never forget sitting front row watching a better Cincinnati team beat ND at home to snap their home winning streak.. and now Satterfield has me thinking we will never get back to that level…
ND was beat by NIU. NIU offense out played ND defense. NIU defense stopped ND offense. There were no trickery just players making plays. Past 4 years NIU has beaten Ga Tech(home), Boston College(home), and ND(home). Had Vandy down by 2 TD but ultimately lost in 4th quarter. Lost to Nebraska out right. Just as bad as Brian Kelly losing to Tulsa 🤣 Lou Holtz had the tough's schedule from 86-1996. The only quote easy games was Navy. Air Force was always good team becouse of there head coach. I blame the University you can't have strait A student and expect to win championship's. When Lou had Notre Dame looking good in 1990 they got hard on academics and felt like the football program became bigger than academic it's like they were jealous of the football program. Now it's all about money they got rid of grass and now its crap turf, so they can have concerts and any other money making event. It's a new world if they want to win in football it's ok have B students playing football. Maybe it's time for ND join a conference if they do it needs to be in the Big 10 and start playing Michigan USC Michigan State and Purdue every year again. Let players back in to ND like the teams in the late 80s back in the day's.
Exactly. It's never been admitted to, but they relaxed their academic standards to recover from the Gerry Faust era. Once they got back on top, they tightened them again. Holtz couldn't recruit the players he really wanted.
there have been other high-profile losses, but this was the worst. here are a few reasons why: 1. up until kickoff, ND was ranked #5 and was a legit contender for the national championship. i do not think they were ranked so high in the other losses (i could be wrong). 2. this was a nationally televised game and the irish were favored by 4 TDs. yes, i know other teams had huge point spreads as well, but this was the coach's third season. the marshall loss was his first, so the loss could be attributed to growing pains. 3. most other teams might not have been good, but they had some type of name recognition and played in the power conferences. NIU is from the MAC, so they had neither. 4. it was their home opener and paid NIU $1.4 million to be embarrassed. from a score perspective, they held NIU to 16 points, which is not a lot, but they could not make any crucial stops when it mattered. the offense could not muster 17 points. in fact, they were pushed around the entire game. flat out embarrassment. i cannot believe there are people who are still painting some sort of roadmap for playoff bid. congratulations to NIU, you deserved to win. it was def earned.
I love Brady Quinn, really do and agree with a lot of what he is saying, but Freeman didn't have this team ready and I don't get it and I don't get why Riley is playing this coming Saturday, don't get it, all 4 phases need to look in the mirror, offense, defense, special teams and coaches, that is so concerning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The passing game is beyond ridiculous, you can't adjust on the fly, that is why we need Steve A.
All of the top teams get the smaller schools best shot. Ohio State, Texas, UGA play a smaller school and it is those guys chance to put on tape that NFL scouts will see. The difference is they don't loose.
even if NIU does win out, it will have a very negligible impact. in fact, the only circumstance it will matter is if both ND and NIU win out for the remainder of the season. the MAC is also a very weak conference compared to the power 5, so if NIU does run the table i highly doubt anyone will care from a CFP POV. NIUs only other high-profile game is NC State, and they got clobbered last week, so there goes NIUs SOS.
