From Mark Montieth's column today: The fates of three football players collided with the shock and force of a thunderbolt the afternoon of Sept. 24, 1977, when Purdue and Notre Dame met at Ross-Ade Stadium. . . Notre Dame was a heavy favorite. It had lost just three games each of the past two seasons under coach Dan Devine, but the alums-accustomed to the success and charisma of predecessor Ara Parseghian-were grumbling. When the Irish lost their second game of the season at Mississippi, “Dump Devine” stickers began popping up on car bumpers around South Bend. A loss at Purdue in the third week would have marked the beginning of the end of Devine’s tenure. And it nearly happened. The Boilermakers, led by first-year coach Jim Young and freshman quarterback Mark Herrmann, were coming off a 5-6 season and in the early stages of a major rebuild, but they jumped to a 24-14 first-half lead that stunned the largest crowd (68,966) in Ross-Ade history to that date. Devine pulled starting quarterback Rusty Lisch late in the first quarter in favor of Gary Forystek, a senior. Forystek, a high school all-American from Dearborn, Michigan, who had chosen Notre Dame over a long list of major programs, including Michigan, completed two of his first three passes to move the Irish to Purdue’s 26-yard line. But then, flushed from the pocket and forced to run, he collided head-on with Purdue’s senior linebacker, Fred Arrington. The explosive impact reverberated through the stadium, stunning the fans into silence. By today’s rules, Arrington would have been penalized, perhaps ejected, for headhunting. Forystek lay motionless for 25 heart-stopping minutes, and an ambulance was called onto the field. . . . Devine sent Lisch back into the game for the rest of the half and the start of the third quarter, but with Notre Dame still trailing by 10 points late in the period, he grew desperate. He finally called for his third-string quarterback-a junior named Joe Montana. Montana nearly threw an interception on his first pass but proceeded to lead the Irish to a 31-24 victory. Devine said afterward he wasn’t sure who would start the next game but stuck with Montana. Notre Dame won every game the rest of the season, including a victory in the Cotton Bowl for the national championship. Purdue, failing to capture what could have been a season-propelling victory, stumbled to a 5-6 record. Let's hope we have an answer in our 2nd or 3rd string QB. Unless we are willing to run a lot of power runs with QB Riley Leonard, there is no point in playing him. And, with due respect, that's not a formula for long term success, based on who we have on the roster.
Marcus Freeman was given a job with zero head coaching experience. This being year 3 means nothing, it is either be patient with Freeman or blow it up and start the whole process again. Great job John as usual! I’m 77 years old. I can’t root for a program that refuses to embrace what is necessary to field an elite football program. It’s easy, hire a young up and coming Coach with fire . They are out there . The athletic department knows this , but they keep giving us the illusion of heading in the right direction. Enough of this , pay for the right people or get out of college football.
Mr. Kennedy, you summed it up after the Ohio State loss- ND coaches do not know how to win. Recall the last two plays of the game and with one TO left, they only had 10 men on Defense.... Freeman said he knew but didn't want to call time out......blah, blah, blah...... With all the poor coaching decisions, with 5 minutes left in the game, they still find themselves up 14-13 with a 2nd and ONE on the 50. Instead of running for the first down, and moving the chains and the clock... OC calls a long bomb with a QB that can't throw the ball past 5 yards..... What could go wrong??
i hate what happened but i hated the reaction by our coach acting so nonchalant in the press conference even more. his response would’ve been an insult to us all had it been a loss to Georgia but a loss to Northern Illinois deserves more of a direct and honest acknowledgment of the scale of the situation.
Well, there is a new president, new chairman of trustees just in July (and the new athletic director earlier this year). Let’s see if ‘the administration’ has the ….. - or will it be the same old, same old? Guess we’ll see.
Fire Freeman , hire an experienced head coach from outside the program, give him free reign to clean house and bring in his own staff. Notre Dame football needs a fresh start and this is the only way to accomplish this objective.
Third year coach still making first year excuses! Leonard is not the qb for our team. Needs to start playing Angeli and go from there. Let's Go Fighting Irish!☘☘☘
From day one of Leonard’s transfer announcement I tried telling all of the so-called experts online that Leonard has nothing but his legs, and that Angeli is a much better QB who deserves to start. I provided much data to support my argument, and all I got from these fanboys is a claim that Leonard is a potential first round draft choice, but not once was anyone able to provide me with any stats to support that claim, or the claim that he is even remotely qualified to play at ND. Here we are after two shyt performances by Leonard, 0 TD’s, 2 INT’s, and a deep ball underthrown by at least 15 yards despite a clean look. I get that he was paid a lot to come here, but when the season is literally on the line and he has demonstrated nothing but incompetence, Freeman continues to go with him? The team as a whole is not playing well, but Leonard is largely responsible for the situation Notre Dame is currently in by not being able to get the ball downfield. In continuing to start Leonard Freeman is saying that he is afraid to do his job and make tough decisions. If he can’t sit Leonard and start Angeli when that move is clearly warranted, he is not qualified to be a coach beyond Pop Warner.

@@imsooffended6860 stop being offended. How is my comment not relevant to your comment? You’re thinking of Championships as a ND fan. NIU fans don’t think of Championships because that’s not realistic, same for ND fans.
I'm 36 years older than I was the last time Notre Dame won a National Championship. But ND was robbed of a National Championship in 1993 in reality.--we beat the National Champion FSU and somehyended up 2nd in the AP poll and 3rd in the UPI poll with only one loss like FSU. 🤔
Ian Book would NEVER have made that throw. We had a receiver wide open on a weak side post for a 20yd gain.beyond irresponsible! That’s what is shocking. Who does that? Maybe Ukelele at FSU but nobody else. Shameful
Right after the Alma mater, Marcus freeman and the team were booed off the field by a shocked fan base, and rightly so. The band immediately started playing the Victory March… that to me sums up exactly where ND is a program right now. The program is a giant/beautiful cruise ship with a smooth and sterilized operation. Stadium rebuilt, new football facilities coming, incessant PA music(that 3rd down music is enough to make your ears bleed), field turf because grass isn’t cool. The annual shirts with corny slogans referencing ancient glory. And my personal pet peeve, that pretentious, obnoxious, arrogant magic girl song we play prior to kickoff. Below the water level for this cruise ship though is an aging rudder, a missing propeller blade, and a rusted hull. The glitz and glam SS ND isn’t going anywhere fast, and is constantly on the cusp of sinking. Stop investing in the ancillary money making bells and whistles and focus on winning football games. Develop your talent, and instill a killer instinct. We should be playing to embarrass teams like NIU, and humble the big dogs on our schedule. I am tired of being on the receiving end of a soft and money hungry football culture.
Why was Freeman hired as the head coach? He was not elevated from the head coach position at a lower level program, but was well liked and recommended by the team. A good recruiter, yes. But should this be the criteria for promoting him to the head coach position. I think not and the truth lay in the pudding.Go outside the program and find a seasoned, experienced head coach to replace Freeman.
Don't think he was good at recruiting even. Our offense has no game changing wide receivers or running back outside of Love. The offensive line sucks as well.
I had hope for Freeman when he was hired. I am tired of seeing stupid loses like this. ND needs to let Freeman know he is not the right guy. Then start looking for someone new!!!
He has no answers because everything he’s experiencing is new to him. He does not have the experience to anticipate things are going wrong, and head them off. He has to take the L, to figure out the team wasn’t prepared. He should have been peeling the paint off the walls screaming at halftime, and he should have been a prick all week. You have to anticipate complacency, and stop it. Not bring a football team into a game completely and thoroughly mentally unprepared
MF is not the guy. I like him...he has a great story, and a great message...great recruiter, hard worker. But his teams have at least one cataclysmic loss each season. So, no it isn't the admin/donors not investing...no it isn't the lack of talent...no it isn't the facilities or academics. This coach was surrounded by the best support system....EVER! 3 years in he hasn't figured out how to press the right buttons.
The answers are easy. The admin will do what saves the most money. And it is obvious the HC has lost both the coaching staff and players. You need to hit the ejection button on Freeman to start heading in the right direction.
Would be better if we joined a conference. We’re perceived as being arrogant, and for goood reason. Time to quit with the ‘Wake up the echos’ and retire that ‘shirt.’ It’s not 1924, 😳! The four horsemen have long since ridden into the sunset, lol. Play by the rules and with the schedule everybody else does. ‘Independence’ is arrogance.
In answer to your questions, John, I believe that Freeman's seat is warm, not yet hot, but he only has 10 games or so for sure. If he continues on the NIU path, he will be gone at the end of the season. If he wins the rest of his games, he will be here next year. Anything in between is a guess, but I wouldn't be betting on his return.
Irish map to future success, starts with finding and announcing joining a big conference. Team Immediately benefits in recruiting. Join as soon as possible. To Texas & OU a couple years. Then based on that start a strategical look for coaches. Hire when you find the answer, not before. CFB has changed to big Conferences and talent feeder schools.
John, your question actually illustrates the difference between Brian Kelly and Marcus Freeman. When Kelly went 4-8 in 2016, he knew where the problem was and he knew how to fix it...and he did. Even if you didn't care for Kelly's vision, you could at least see its foundation and trust it. As far as Freeman, he doesn't have the credibility or experience to allow the fanbase to put faith in or trust his process. In short, we don't know what his process is and therefore, we can't begin to identify a pathway to success and stability. Freeman is in year 3 of a 5 year contract. If this team fails to go at least 10-2 or 11-1, he will absolutely be on the hot seat heading into next season.
1. Where are we at right now? Still at square 1 in year 3, seat is already warm two games in and will heat up with each additional loss 2. How did we get here? We hired a guy with zero HC experience, again 3. Where do you go from here? You already know the answer, you just don't like it, but the longer we delay the worse it will get. Go hire an experienced college HC who can win games and is a solid recruiter, the more we win the easier recruiting will get
There’s no way to give answers until they play more games. He could stand at the podium and give answers until he’s blue in the face but until the team shows it on the field it doesn’t matter. It’s easy to blame the coach for every loss but let’s be honest at the end of the day it’s the players who execute or don’t execute a game plan and have to make plays and this week they weren’t able to make plays and win battles.
ND always thinking they have some special privlege or smarts..... Like hiring a head coach that the team wanted who had ZERO prior HC experience.. Wallow now in the stupidity and it's so entertaining to watch Damey boys
Clearly Freeman is NOT the future of this program. Notre Dame, under this First Time Head Coach, will never be Elite & will never reach the Playoffs. I quit Charlie Weiss after 3 years, I’m done with Freeman now. See you when Notre Dame hires an actual Coach with experience
ASK GOOLSBY WHAT HE THINKS: Give the team their practice uniforms vs Purdue. I’m being literal. If at least the Gold helmet comes back for Miami OH - well, that’s for the fans at home.. It’s the only message to send to the players, and just as important, ND Nation supporters.
He said we've been here before! That's the f'n problem! This school is so pathetic and mediocre. When someone shows you who they are believe them. I see this team as no better than 8-4
Not much will happen until after the USC game. Thats when a total evaluation will be needed. What can be said now ? Its bad but, you go into battle with the troops you have not with the troops you WISH you had. There is a lot of football left to be played. The pissing and moaning will continue even if the team wins out. This team is facing adversity. Its on everyone to do a reboot and see what plays out. I would give Leonard a few series in the start against Purdue. If he doesn't move the team try a different QB. Its one game at a time. Make the changes that are needed in the moment. It has to be a gut reaction. Not some analytical crap based on some algorithm. Win at the line of scrimmage and positives things will follow. This is just for Purdue. You build on that and then do the evaluation. Then you prepare for the next game. This is football not analytics coming from the IT Dept.
john the A and M game was no test freeman has had time so he needs fired and our million dollar one year wonder needs put on the bench Angeli needs to start and we need to get the other QB's involved this is now a rebuild job looking to next season everybody talked recruiting how has that worked out N D is not the place for your first head coaching job and this needs to happen right now
To drop off the cliff in one week, I think Freeman gave the whole program one week off and that includes the coaching staff. Notre Dame FB: The Master of Deception!🤮☘️
NO reason for any BS press conference (goes for White House wastes of time too). ONLY thing Freeman has to do, his job, is to coach the team to wins. Better to say NOTHING all season, finish 12 - 0. There will be no complaints!
HERES a ? There are videos out saying the reason ND lost to NIU was lack of offensive weapons. I disagree. Giving Love and Price 15 more rushes, split between them, would’ve produced a victor,y of 10-14 points. IS THAT GOOD ENOUGH? ITLL get you through the day but no it’s not good enough, Because that means several losses ahead, with good defenses only playing the run, like last year. This is what happened after Ohio St the country saw ND COULDNT pass, and teed off, that’s exactly what’s ahead. They’ve seen a line that can’t pass protect and a QB who can’t throw. There are beat downs and embarrassment ahead. UNLESS, the RECIEVERS are much better, in the few opputunities they’ve had, it’s obvious, and the only hope I see is that RILEYS ARM OR SHOULDER WAS HURT. He’s an escape artist and he could work with a bad passing OL. No injury report it appears to be what it is.
Here's your answer: The ND program is about to take a Nebraska-esque nose dive Things will get even worse under the next coach, no matter who it is, and worse still the coach after that
Did I just read that literally statistically NDs offense is now worse than IOWA’s. ? VERY LEAST MF SHOULDVE APOLOGIZED. Just because it’s the right thing to do. Period. Acknowledge how bad it is, fully, how unacceptable, how sorry you are to the fans, to all that love and support ND. Thought he was a classy guy???
Here’s the flaw in your logic though, Kelly had already proven himself, at that point. The 2012 run had built up enough goodwill and confidence that he could turn it around. Freeman has no such collateral will to fall back on. He has to go 10-2 minimum to be here for the long term, anything less and he will be out.
I know this will fall on deaf ears. Stop spending money on anything that comes from this university. If you want things to change, they have to change at the top and that will only happen when they start seeing a decrease in revenue year after year.
IMO the size thing isn’t an excuse for the performance. I played 6a football in Mississippi I was a 220 DE and DL and all the Oline I went against were atleast 270+. I started for 3 years and I can probably count on 1 hand the amount of times I got pushed more than 2 yards off the ball. Excellent ball get-off and explosiveness along with skill /strength and speed with make up for the size difference. Along with good coaching. IMO the underperformance from the ND Dline is one of 2 things; a skill issue, and or coaching. There big enough Dlinemen for there level. I’ve had issues with Al Washington last year and my eyes are looking directly at him again
@@brendenstyre4784 you are a rare specimen. I played undersized at LB as well and got run over by run-heavy bigger teams. There is a definite size disadvantage when ND plays top 25 teams. The NIU O-line averages 310 lbs. and Antonio Brown was gashing ND. Any SEC team and most of the Big 10 would have stopped this.

Great job John as usual! I’m 77 years old. I can’t root for a program that refuses to embrace what is necessary to field an elite football program. It’s easy, hire a young up and coming Coach with fire . They are out there . The athletic department knows this , but they keep giving us the illusion
of heading in the right direction. Enough of this , pay for the right people or get out of college football.
Agree 💯
577 you will not live to see an Irish championship
What could go wrong??
i hate what happened but i hated the reaction by our coach acting so nonchalant in the press conference even more. his response would’ve been an insult to us all had it been a loss to Georgia but a loss to Northern Illinois deserves more of a direct and honest acknowledgment of the scale of the situation.
couldn't agree more, it was like losses like this are unacceptable
cuz modern people like to try to act nonchalant because then you assume they are smart...Marcus aint smart lol
Couldn’t agree more even swamp thing through a fake temper tantrum after USC
Yes, he's "been there before."
Lost respect for Freeman during the press conference. I feel bad John that you have to report this team every week. We suck. Bench Leonard
I'm with you there.
Bench him now light a fire under this team ! No passing touchdowns in 8 quarters of football. What a joke 🙄
I’m ok w benching Leonard, but it goes way deeper than that. Freeman’s “ system” sucks. Let Denbrock do his thing
aw, poooooor johnny
Not committed to winning at the administration level. Hired the wrong coach for the wrong reasons.
Well, there is a new president, new chairman of trustees just in July (and the new athletic director earlier this year). Let’s see if ‘the administration’ has the ….. - or will it be the same old, same old? Guess we’ll see.
Explain it to us
Fire Freeman , hire an experienced head coach from outside the program, give him free reign to clean house and bring in his own staff.

Notre Dame must and needs to sit Riley Leonard
Go after Urban Meyer. He probably won't take the job but you at least have to try.
Bench Leonard.
I’m 8 years older than my father was the last time we won a championship.
In what reality do you even think ND is close to winning a championship? Your goal needs to be more realistic for you to be happy.
@@milan.2412 talk about out of context. Reading comprehension isn’t your strong suit.
@@milan.2412nice troll
Ian Book would NEVER have made that throw. We had a receiver wide open on a weak side post for a 20yd gain.beyond irresponsible! That’s what is shocking. Who does that? Maybe Ukelele at FSU but nobody else. Shameful
At this point Always Irish needs to be sponsored by Better Help. Because we all need it
The program is shit that's where we are at and it's not changing unless administration changes
Freeman sounds like a 💩politician… It’s clear he’s completely out of his depth
John, you are the only one that I've listened to following the nightmare. Everyone else seems to love it. 😤
He needs to go coach at a lesser program gain years of experience there before coming back to the big leagues!
Freeman first mistake this season, he handed Riley that starting job the moment he walked on campus.
Listen to the "always college football Greg McElory" podcast. I think he's the best college analyst. He talks about what wrong with ND.
Lost all respect for Freeman as a HC after that presser. #FireFreeman
ND should join the MAC
MF is not the guy. I like him...he has a great story, and a great message...great recruiter, hard worker. But his teams have at least one cataclysmic loss each season. So, no it isn't the admin/donors not investing...no it isn't the lack of talent...no it isn't the facilities or academics. This coach was surrounded by the best support system....EVER! 3 years in he hasn't figured out how to press the right buttons.
“winning is hard” - Brian Kelly
Life is hard! .... AND?????
The answers are easy. The admin will do what saves the most money. And it is obvious the HC has lost both the coaching staff and players. You need to hit the ejection button on Freeman to start heading in the right direction.
Bevacqua is thinking: Join the Big Ten, and "backdoor your way" into The Playoffs
I still can't grasp how u can get beat by a Mac school
It really is as simple as Freeman is a horrible HC.
Where do you want ND to be with this? I think we all know we will never get to where we want to be with Freeman.
Exactly right man when he made that comment we been here before . That got me too !
I'm convinced if ND was in a conference they would lose 3-4 games every year
Johnny when is Gools dropping the film breakdown on Patreon? I need answers 😭
Still at square 1 in year 3, seat is already warm two games in and will heat up with each additional loss
2. How did we get here? We hired a guy with zero HC experience, again
3. Where do you go from here? You already know the answer, you just don't like it, but the longer we delay the worse it will get. Go hire an experienced college HC who can win games and is a solid recruiter, the more we win the easier recruiting will get
MF is soft doesnt take accountability full of excuses and cant develop physically or mentally tough teams not at notre dame...he gots to go
There’s no way to give answers until they play more games.
If we win out....is Freeman out our hot seat as fans still, after losing to NIU?
Clearly Freeman is NOT the future of this program. Notre Dame, under this First Time Head Coach, will never be Elite & will never reach the Playoffs. I quit Charlie Weiss after 3 years, I’m done with Freeman now. See you when Notre Dame hires an actual Coach with experience
Are Freeman’s hands tied on the QB due to the NIL payout ?
ASK GOOLSBY WHAT HE THINKS: Give the team their practice uniforms vs Purdue. I’m being literal. If at least the Gold helmet comes back for Miami OH - well, that’s for the fans at home.. It’s the only message to send to the players, and just as important, ND Nation supporters.
The PC was a bigger loss than the one on saturday!!
marcus freeman must be removed,he is a horrible coach and i am a ohio state fan
Why is everyone bashing NIU. They need to build up NIU so Notre Dame can still make the playoffs!
Thank you for saying it out loud John
Maybe we will see how aggressive Bevaqua is.
As a avid Freeman supporter pre NIU I think it’s win out or be fired
Im loving this😅😅😅DEI
john the A and M game was no test freeman has had time so he needs fired and our million dollar one year wonder needs put on the bench Angeli needs to start and we need to get the other QB's involved this is now a rebuild job looking to next season everybody talked recruiting how has that worked out N D is not the place for your first head coaching job and this needs to happen right now
"We've been here before". What a great reminder of mediocrity coach. lol
To drop off the cliff in one week, I think Freeman gave the whole program one week off and that includes the coaching staff. Notre Dame FB: The Master of Deception!🤮☘️
What if NIU is a really good football team? And to make it into the playoffs you're going to have to run the table.
What can you do, JOHN? You’re Notre Dame man. You light a candle at The Grotto and pray.
Amen. Hail Mary.
Take a page from Harbaugh: if everybody is doing it, it is not cheating.
The university is in the money-making business. Until the football team starts affecting the money line, there will not be a change
ND fans have lobotomies watching that crap
I’m ready to Row the Boat with P.J. Fleck…clean house!!!
It’s Tuesday? His press conference was today or Monday.
NO reason for any BS press conference (goes for White House wastes of time too). ONLY thing Freeman has to do, his job, is to coach the team to wins. Better to say NOTHING all season, finish 12 - 0. There will be no complaints!
Where are they now? All the critics and ND Haters?
Yall almost got the upset
Please stop calling A&M a signature win.
Within the SEC, the teams proud of beating the aggies would be the level of S.Carolina, Kentucky and Arkansas
Now Leonard is hurt fine let’s try somebody else
Don’t put a hurt quarterback on the field
Here's your answer:
The ND program is about to take a Nebraska-esque nose dive
Things will get even worse under the next coach, no matter who it is, and worse still the coach after that
Otherwise we need to recruit Nick Saban out of retirement
Bob Davie and Weiss lasted 4-5 years.
I think you’re stuck.
BTW, CAN WE BE DONE WITH HIRING ASSISTANTS...
It could be worse. At least Hatians did not eat your cat.
I also think that ND should be patient with Freeman. He has elevated your recruiting
Even his speech needs preparation because he didn’t say anything worth listening too!
Sob I’m pissed
BK got another year after 4 win 2016 so MF ain't going anywhere soon.
Y'all need a new coach. And most of your players are too small to beat any of the top 10 teams. Need bigger guys on both sides of the line.
Every one has forgotten our motto .. Notre Dame will win overall. 🏆
What happened to that?
We are 1-1. Not too shabby. Not perfect. But not too shabby at all.
Camping 🌎 World Bowl officials probably already habe ND on its short list. What's not to love.
Go Irish!!!
Irish overrated….never should have been ranked!!! Congratulations NI ❤❤❤
Your not winning with these players and coaches
ND made the same mistake they did after Lou Holtz retired! They didn't go and get a proven head coach!!!
