- Heat Your Pool Quickly? This is a video response to 5-minute Crafts video where they make the claim that you can heat your pool quickly. you can find their video here • 39 COOLEST SUMMER IDEA...
heres the link on how to heat your pool for dummies www.dummies.com/home-garden/g...

Cold water sinks and hot water rises. If your thermometer is hanging low it is in the colder water. In any case it would take more coverage, and several days to get 10 degrees of change, and that is without your pool being shaded by trees.
Best way for a cheap solar heater is to use a 3/4 hose bib on your plumbing after the pump and filter and run a black garden hose out onto your roof or a shed roof. Or around the deck. Where ever you have sun all the time... Obviously run the other end back into the pool. Ive seen people use an old vaccum line to return it back to the pool but you can do it basically anywhere. Make a little fountain back into the pool if you want
I almost tried to make these. Glad I saw your video first! I guess I'll have to stick to lugging around the large solar cover.
I'm in Arizona and I've used the full surface bubble-wrap style pool covers in the past. You can leave them full (rectangular) size and put something on the deck to hold the extra part down (wind). This works well it you have leaves or other stuff blowing into the pool. --OR-- If your yard is free of that kinda crap you can trim it so it fits the shape of your pool and it touches the water surface completely. The trimmed up version seemed to outlast the non-trimmed one since I guess the water keeps the sun from baking the bubble wrap and disintegrating it. The drawback is if stuff DOES blow onto the thing, the wind will get it to the edge and it will get into the pool sooner or later. TRADEOFFS! So the bottom line here in AZ is you can extend your pool season by a month or two on each end. With kids it's worth it, but now that my kids are grown and out I don't bother. On another point, even with the hot-ass AZ sun and a full pool cover it takes several days to make a notable change in water temp. So floating those little thingies won't do shit. Not even here in Phoenix! So yeah, those people are full of shit. Just my humble ass opinion of course. ;-)
Not endorsing here at all, but here's an example of a trimmed install. ua-cam.com/video/dTINFWo3h-o/v-deo.html
As you said, the way these work is to trap in heat and prevent it from escaping. To do such you’d need to make enough of the Lilly pads to cover the entire water surface of the pool. The larger the gap, the more heat that will be lost.
Even if they did actually HEAT the water, the equivalent of what you did was to put a candle under a 60 quart pot of water and expect the water at the top of the pot to be boiling after 45 min.
Try it again with a kiddie pool and Lilly pad that covers the entire water surface. Check it again in 24 hours and you’ll see the temp has gone up.
K T basically you said what a stupid video,,,,, I agree KT
Yes, your pool has to be almost 100% covered and can’t be shaded by trees. They didn’t prove a thing, also most people knows it takes longer than 2 hours.
Uh, pool owner here. I remember when this post made its rounds on Facebook. I thought it was ridiculous then. It's still ridiculous. QUICKLY heat up the pool with just 3 of those cheap things? Get outta here with that. If you wanna warm your pool like that it's gonna take some time, and use a REAL solar cover to get it done.
Shooting the temperature gun on a black surface exposed to the sun is obviously going to show warmer temperatures.
After a few days with the solar cover on, and the first about 6 in of the water is warmed up. That won't enhance anybody's swimming experience. Those little lily pads aren't going to do Jack squat 😂
I did this last year and it worked great. I just used black leaf bags and noodles. I did it again this year.
Awesome video!!! I love the metal interludes. Our pool is cold all summer. I will have to come up with something innovative to try. Thank you for the vid!!!
I have tested the same thing in my pool. Its a much smaller pool, and I only have it up in the summer. I agree with youre conclusion. It does not work
Mine worked. Took a week or so but I was able to enjoy the pool a little longer last summer.
Cheers for the test, saved me making them. I was going to make a butt load of them.
Most interesting way I've seen someone heat their pool is to put a pipe (inflow) at the halfway point (between the shallowest part of the pool and the deepest part). The water is pumped from there and the pipe passes through their outdoor fireplace and back down into the pool at the deepest point of the pool (outflow). Still takes ages to heat the pool but it does work. They also installed a split system on the section of pipe that returns to the pool after the fireplace, that they can turn on/off. They use the same method to heat the water in their outdoor spa.
Thanks for the vid, keeps me from having to try it myself. I’m a metal head also, like the Ms’s right shoulder tat!
The problem with your pool is that it has too much shade. We have the same problem. When the pool was installed 30+ years ago it would heat quickly in the spring. Now that the surrounding trees have grown and shade the pool with partial shade it always seems cold.
I am a pool technician in Florida. I am getting ready to start producing content to refute the misinformation out there about pool cleaning and equipment and to set the record straight about the "tips and tricks" you see out there regarding pools and spas. The pool blankets do not heat. They are intended for overnight use, ONLY WHEN YOU ARE HEATING THE POOL, and are intended to be taken off during the day because leaving them on too long can result in algae as well as decreasing the life span of the blanket due to the eventual dry rot caused by the sun. Your water has a very delicate chemistry balance and part of that balance is the water's exposure to sunlight. Heaters also vary in ability and cost effectiveness. The primary pool heaters are gas and electric. Electric can be cheaper than gas depending on the region you are in, and gas is the quickest type of heater from my experience in this field. Solar panels are also an option, however the time of year can change how effective they are, and generally they are better used in tandem with another heater type. It is best to run your primary heater to raise the entire temperature, and then turn on your solar panels to aid in maintaining the heat level in your pool. This is easiest done with a modernized automation system with temperature computers, sensors and motorized valves able to activate and deactivate heaters depending on the heating demand. Alternatively, you can monitor the heat via thermometers and change the valves accordingly as time goes on. This will decrease the cost of heating, though given the amount of work that goes into manually alternating heaters most of our customers with standard systems opt to run one heater at a time and accept the additional cost as a luxury expense.
Wrong about SOLAR COVERS .
My above ground pool heats from 60f to 80f by 3 pm ( outside = sunny 75 ) I have a sprinkler at bottom moving bottom water up forcing heated water down. My own UA-cam proof coming soon
Thanks for trying it out for me now I won't have to looking at your pool if it stays cold I would cut back some of those trees that has your pool shaded that's what worked in our pool but only in the warm months I hope you find one that works and shares it
Enjoyed the video! If I may make a suggestion, make 5 or 6 or more. If u want to see a temp increase for the size of ur pool u need more. Btw beautiful swimming pool! 🏊♀️
I think the build blew my speakers. Thanks for the vid
We have a large black plastic that covers the entire above ground pool, even the sides.
This serves to block anything that would get in the pool, it protects the chlorine from UV rays when not in use, provides a heat source aswell and retains heat at night.
Yesterday the temperature at 8pm was around 86°F/30°C.
The surface temperature reaches above 90° Farenheit, which then gets mixed every time the pump runs.
By floating it on surface, the heat dissipates to air even if it did absorb some from solar. Sinking it into bottom of pool might improve a little, but not expecting too much unless you paint the whole pool black... get a cooking pot of water under the sun to see how much warmer it gets.
You could cover your entire pool with those things and you won't see a very noticeable difference other than finding it hard to swim 😂
Thank you for going through all of the aggravation. I only have two comments. First, I noticed you have a lot of shade, that might be one reason your pool never heats up pass 80.
I am making these hula rings for this year. Maybe they will or wont make a big difference in temperature but I'm doing it because i hart the big solar blanket.
We'll see if it's a good idea for me.
Thank you again
Hey! How's your pool now? Have you tested these hula rings?
@@Jookeerr wow, this is so unexpected. But very nice. I have a bunch of hula hoops for sell 😂🤣.
They might have worked but I gave up. I had gorilla glued and hot glued a very nice thick black plastic, that started coming loose after a few weeks.
It could have been the teenagers handling them roughly though.
The problem was, for some reason they would get turned Parallel to the side of the pool and once blocked off the skimmer. That was it, I went back to the bulky solar cover.
You never know, unless you try. They might work for some ppl. But I should have listened to the author of this post.😊
Thanks for taking time and responding back
I'm glad you did this thank you ! You think it would work better in a smaller above ground pool?
I'm jealous, I love cool water in pools :) Great video as always.
Our girls love it too
5 little lilly pads in a pool that size for only 2-1/2 hours? I'm not surprised it didn't do anything. But I bet if you made 20 of them and waited 3 sunny days in a row you would notice an increase compared to not having them. It's an alright solution during the weekdays, but on weekends you should heat the pool with a bonfire heater.
Is the bonfire heater something u MADE. Can u share HOW please?😊
I think this may be a great idea for reducing water evaporation like we need to do in California. Have you seen the price of pool covers lately?! I’d be interested to see a 24 hr water evaporation test on these.
Love the soundtrack of Metallica plus the shirt!!
You should try it with full sun on your water surface. I see a lot of shade.
I think I might try solar blankets to cover the rings rather than just black garbage bags. The solar blankets are designed to absorb solar heat more efficiently.
In Arizona they throw blocks of ice in the pool to cool it down. 😂
My pool is freezing right now. But given the lovely az heat it doesn't seem logical for me to eve buy a pool blanket 😬
That’s a lie lmao
Great video it does work but you would have to build way more of them for it to work 70 of them will do it in your pool and you don't need the foam, I have used this method. Many thanks from the UK
Thank you
The black trash bag hack is wack. We tried covering out pool last year for a week and it only raised the temp maybe 5* which is what the sun would have done on its own.
Instant thumbs up from me because of your music preference!
🤘🤘
Metallica!! You guys rock. Thanks for doing this. Im still thinking I may put about 5 on my pool at night to help with evaporation at least.
Your wife is a trooper 👍
What if you put a kiddie cheapie foam kick board in the bag they sell em at the dollar tree. Do you think that'll work?
Subscribed as soon as I saw the girls and music! Haha
Hi i love your videos. Hey can you do a review on solar heater that uses panel hoses? Thank you
Tested this out i saw what was wrong right away 😂 5- minute crafts did it wrong too!! so basicly what you wanna do is cover tge whole pool with garbage bags and not make those circles it will work 😩
Solar covers work great but are a pain to take on and off and also create a safety hazard. We had a dog accidently fall into our pool and she got trapped under the cover and could not swim to the steps. I imagine the same could happen to a child. They work great though by covering the pool at night and taking off in morning it maintains your temp better.
I hope your dog was rescued on time and was ok
@@margavsd1 yes she was, thank you.
Great video. My pool has the same problem, always cold. Even in Puerto Rico.
You gotta cover the whole pool with them… duh
I wonder if this would work in a small above ground pool. Mine is 14ft x 42in
yes
Use a clear piece of plastic fill with water to make a parabolic reflector then use it to heat the water we did it one bright winter day raised a 18ft circular inflatable pool. Pool temperature definitely raised it was warm to the touch. I'd say it's to do with the side's of the pool yours is permanently cold due to sides not being insulated where as our cheap inflatable retains heat better.
best solution i fould was a Solat water mat and the pool cover on, leave it all morning take it off and by lunch it was 82f, NOW bare in mind i live in the North part of Switzerland (warmer than the UK thankfully) it gets 90's but pool still never went over 70f now it does with how i trap the heat and let it warm the water in the morning and just sun in the afternoon when its hot enough to solve heating issues, keeps the heat mostly from the day before over night as well
Darn, I thought she was going to melt into green smoke as afraid of the water as she was.
Have you tried the leaf pool nets?
Lol I just thought they put a black trash bag over a hula hoop in five minute crafts
yeah need to build a solar coil. these arent gunna cut it. will help minorly maybe if u have entire pool covered with em and ur pool isnt covered in shade
I cried when I realized the truth
I must say the build was the best part! #WellMaybeTheBikiniWas :)
Lol
The laws of thermodynamics say its fake. This floating tarp barely works because there is nothing to collect or concentrate the solar heat. Also the transfer of heat is only on the surface of the water and is very slow. You need a pump to make a good solar pool heater.
I think, that covering whole pool by some black plastic foil could give some positive and measurable results. How about that?
I think that’s what plastic pool covers are? To keep the water clean and some what warm?
Seems the light blue color is so popular but what if the pools were navy blue or even just black? I think a black pool would be warm.
I'm pretty sure that you need a large mass to convert 100,000 lbs (estimate) of water to a higher temperature, so 6 or 7 1/2 lb discs isn't going to cut it. Also, with my heat pump, I am probably lucky to see a degree increase per hour. I may lose 3 or 4 degrees overnight, and then my heat pump will kick in and run for 3 hrs to get me back to 80F. So I don't think you ran your test long enough, but I don't think it will work because by the time it takes it up a degree or two it will be dark and your temp will start dropping. The best DIY solution I think is the coiled black hose on a sheet of plywood.
Assuming 5000 gal and no heat loss it would take a 10 kW heater around 1 hour to raise the temperature 1 deg. F. A 180 sq.ft. solar collector should do it.
I'm curious as to what state you live in I am in Central Florida I cannot stand 79°. I did it one day last year just because I had just mowed the grasshad to go to work too long to take a shower so just jumped in the whole real quick. 86 is my tolerancewould it have made a difference if you made more of those to cover the entire pool and put them out at night that's when the heat escapes. 5 years in my home May 28th give or take 5 days each way we hit 86 in July it is 94° like bath water usually the end of the season is September 15th. All I want is to extend the season by two months each way so April 1st to November 1st..
Try making that Solar heater. I knew a guy that made one for his pool 40 years ago and he swore by it.
This will absolutely work if executed right. The top MUST NOT! get wet. The solar cover MUST have full sun exposure.
There MUST be enough coverage to offset the evaporative cooling. Wind plays a big factor.
Remember your pool is a big evaporative cooler!
Your pool is Partly shaded.
My pool has a factory black cover. (It also is also ground insulated. Some pools are, some are not. ) It does in fact work good, for a passive heater.
Also, it can take several days (my solar cover) to collectively heat that volume of water.
I put a like on the vid just watching the tshirt at the 1st second
Well you proved it actually works, you said it traps the heat, so your 79 degrees where "trapped" .
79 degrees is the perfect temp on hot days!
It takes days and you need to get more sun trim the trees . I have the same problem trees i have to trim them my problem is there 80 ft tall 😑 i think that would work over time cover the whole thing in black but keep it above the water it will get mega hot between the wrap and the water. You could keep it level with your ground itll be about 6 inches above.
I threw a bunch of black plastic crates in the pool awhile back and the dark color is what made it warmer.
Also, it made cleaning the pool easier with all the leaves in patches and less dead bugs as they were able to get back out after having a drink.
Crates are nice because they heat a foot deep where the dark plastic sits under water.
Like black pebble tec pool bottoms will raise the temperature only a few degrees not tons.
I got a 18 round pool and 18 round solar cover and my pool jumps up to 85 and 90 every once in a while.
😂 so i am not the only one who hates cold water!
I feel for her I've had a pool 2 weeks getting rid of it we watched black coiled hoses behind glass.. temps over 90 degrees with 2 of them as they trickled the the water thru them xxx
Thank God I never bought them! Thanks
79 would feel like a hot bath to us in the uk.
Need to keep in the solar collectors in the sun or allowing them in the shade
Cut those trees down. Looks like the pool is in the shade my friend
Y’all are cute. Thanks for the vid
yeah, that was a waste of everyone's time and money who tried those people's so-called 5 min craft. you will need to keep your pool covered any time you aren't using it and make sure your cover is on after the sun goes down to stop all your pool water heat. There is no way 5 small hopes with trash bags could heat up your pool even over 2 weeks, there is too much open area for heat to get out. I bought a dark blue solar cover for my above-ground pool and it helps my pool stay above 80 degs most of the time. when it's in the 90s during the day I have to keep the cover off or it can get up to 95+ in the water
The problem is you dont have enough of them to do anything BC I hear my pool the same way and it works. Turn the pump off while your doing it. It will work.
Black has a higher change of temperature with light but won’t go above ambient temperature
You don’t have enough of the things in! Five aren’t going to heat that much water! Use your noggin! You need to cover most of the surface of the pool with the rings.
I love this video.
THANK YOU
lay emergency blankets made of mylar on the bottom to reflect the sun rays back into the water again.
Point is not to keep inside temperature, point is to increase water temp. Emergency blankets will work as thermos.
You needed more pool coverage to get the warming effect. Most of the time those hold in the heat rather than increase the heat.
TY! Finally lol I cover the whole surface area of the water, and these types of products do work. His pool, being that big, with only 1/10th of the water covered. Of course there is going to be no change in temperature.
79?! thats not cold, thats practically bath water! lol
Solar cover are used at night to hold the heat in it got that day
Our pool is fully covered and on a hot day it gets over 90° but we use the blue thing and throughout the day I mix the water
The blue solar cover
For your size of a pool you need to use to use more then 5 of these rings
The video you seen was probably a much smaller pool
wouldnt more heat enter the pool if the black layer was just under the water? as it it its losing a lot of heat to the air
you need to have the complete surface of the water covered & it's never going to warm up your pool in 5 mins or in 5 hours, you also need to have your water covered at night so that it blocks the heat from escaping & I just noticed that you don't have a lot of direct sun light on your pool & it seems that you might have did the solor test when it was later In the afternoon.
This concept will work for a little quantity of water but not for a pool.
80 degrees? I tossed my poor kids in a month ago at 55 degrees!
I imagine you could throw a large black tarp over it huh? that would help heat the pool?
I wonder how long until the garbage bags start leaching harmful chemicals into the pool water
Woulnt they have better results when then are attached at the bottem of the pool??? This way the heat goes trough the water first.
I made these for a 10ft ground pool with 6 pads and it did nothing even after warming for hours.
Y not just cover the hoops in foil and direct the sunlight toward the pool 🤷🏾♂️JS
They make solar covers to heat a pool. So, why not make little solar rings???
It has to do with heatingthrough the bubbles transferring heat.
what?
Underground 1000 gallon tank with an electric 20KW heater element. Connect tank in series with your pump system. Add a solar cover on pool to retain the heat. Turn it on at 3 AM and by noon turn it off remove cover and swim in 85 degree water. No shortcuts. Thermodynamics is a b!tch. Costs about $25 per day
Your kids Rock🤘
has anyone tried doing this where the thing is on the bottom of the pool instead of floating? Seems to me that that would be better.
That pool is too big for it too put a dent in it.
Why is the child in the tie dyed t-shirt giving the devil's salute at 21 seconds? Maybe she doesn't know what this sign means?
Maybe you don't know what this sign means 🤣🤣 it has different meanings. Just Google it.
