We hope this helps you decide how to heat your pool! Remember, a solar cover helps stop evaporation and heat loss and a traditional heater (or the DIY option) will heat up your water even more. If you want more help with pool maintenance, grab the free pool care cheat sheet at www.swimuniversity.com/cheatsheet

Tried all 3 methods. The liquid solar is the most effective and least expensive for those who don’t want to invest into gas. Not every home has gas, so you’re left with 2 options, heat pump or cover. The heat pump uses the same amount of energy as your air conditioner running non stop. So you’ll have a high electric bill.
You can also put large river rocks in the shallow end of your pool. The sun heats them up and it heats the surrounding water. It sounds ghetto, but that’s how the beach water warms up

Great video. I just purchased a stainless steel barrel and have a barrel stove kit on order. I’ll be installing continuous loop stainless tubing from end to end along the inside top and sides of the barrel, with firebrick in the bottom. Not a city or urban option but for anyone in rural areas, cheap fuel and very effective. I will be installing a small blower as well. This puts a little air into the fire dramatically reducing any smoke and making it extremely efficient.

Also, heat pumps will cost you four times what you paid for your above ground pool. Other countries offer above ground pool heaters at a fraction of the cost of even a dome solar heater which btw is very ineffective a waste of money i bought two and spent several hundred on them and saw only one degree change put on a solar cover and temp rose 5 degrees in one day. There is no reason why americans are being blocked from products such as the intex above ground water heater for around $60. The only reason is because these big companies want to give you no other option but to purchase their expensive useless products or force you into investing in their insane pool heaters.

I believe i created the DIY sprinkler hose. When that pipe first came out i was using it on sprinkler systems everyday in Florida . In order to use that pipe you have to fill with water to get it to lay flat and it would heat up so then not recoil into a circle again. Well it would heat up extremely fast and I’d have to warn new employees to be careful opening the end because it would burn you. So i instantly thought of using it to help my pool heater and save money.
I didn’t use a sump pump. You’d only need that if you were running it when your pool pump is off. And the extra electricity of running a sump pump is stupid. So i just put a T in the pool pump piping and added a shut off valve. The shut off valve is important so that you can control the speed of water thru pipe. You need to experiment with the speed of water traveling thru pipe so it’s in there long enough to heat up. Basically i was able to come up with a speed that you couldn’t even touch the water it was so hot.
So i added the T to the pool pump pipe and a shut off valve and then made what looked like a solar pool panel with the piping. I put about 200 feet on a pieces of lightweight silver fiberglass insulation boards so it was easy to put up on my flat roof. I stuck small pieces of cement landscape border under them so rain could flow underneath and then put some on top of it to hold them down. Once they fill with water they get a little heavy too. I did experiment once with just laying the pipe on the flat roof and it worked too and the rain water never got stuck so you might just get away with laying the pipe on the roof or other and it’s fine. Just put some cement pieces or bags of sand in areas to keep it flat.
I then ran the other end of pipe straight to the pool by a jet so it would circulate faster. I left it up so i could always see it entering the pool plus feel if the flow was right to heat & go adjust the shutoff valve if needed. My kids never got burned if you’re worried by my beautiful wife almost did, lol. You don’t have to do this on a roof. You could mount to anything that will help it get even hotter on the ground facing the most sun. This piping just laying on the lawn when we do sprinklers gets insanely hot.
They sell parts for that piping too. You can get Ts and elbows adapters to PVC pipe-everything you need and it’s all put together without glue. You just cut and push together.
The picture he’s showing isn’t really irrigation pipe-it’s actually mister piping for misters. The mister pipe is what you want. It’s a thinner wall and the hole in it is bigger to carry more water thru. The thin plastic it’s made from heats a lot faster and much hotter. Black sprinkler pipe won’t really work. If you don’t believe me then buy 25 feet of each ,fill with water and leave in sunny spot for an hour and you’ll know quickly that you use mister piping for this.
The piping worked and raised my pool 8-10 degrees sometimes more if the nights stayed a bit warm. I was going to add a barrel at the end of the line before it entered the pool to heat it even more for colder ,cloudy days. They sell little solar panels cheap that can power a solar water heater heating element. So i was going to drill hole in barrel and install solar water heater element and hook up the small solar panel to it to along with a car battery in a safe box to heat the water in the barrel for free and be able to heat from the make shift solar water heater and battery.
This is why i believe i created this. I learned how hot the water got in the mister pipe within the first week the product was invented. I told thousands of people & contractors in Florida and many came to see it and feel how hot the water was coming out.

Don't do the DIY solar... don't even do solar.. doesn't work well enough. Mine was 8 feet X 4 feet with 100+ feet of tubing all in black and sealed in with plexiglass. First 20 seconds the water was 180 degrees F but then cooled right down .... so, 14 foot pool never warmed up.
Had a bought solar heater and got nothing out of that as it was 4 feet x 4 feet... so much less than what I built.
I use a portable water heater shower powered by propane and a water pump and timer to bypass shutoff. I comes on for 10 min, shuts off for 10 seconds, then restarts... in an endless loop. This works great but you will go through a whole tank in 6 hours or so, but the pool will be swimable. I am looking at an electric heater now... the cost will be similar if I can get one!

Something I've been thinking about for a long time. For free pool heat, why aren't pool heat pumps tied to the home's air conditioning system? You're removing heat from the home already and dumping it into the air. Why not put it directly into the water instead? Kill two birds with one stone, as it were.

Funny enough, in the recommendations when I watched this video, This Old House did a video 5 years ago on that topic. Watching it next!
