- The New Jersey Devils have obviously been in trade talks with the Calgary Flames to acquire goaltender Jacob Markstom. Over the past couple of days it seems as if this deal may be falling apart. This is dragging out and has become exhausting.
Is Linus Ullmark the answer?
It seems that Patrik Laine is done in Columbus. Laine's agent and the Columbus Blue Jackets are working together to find him a new home. Should the NJ Devils be interested?!?
Does Steven Stamkos stay with the Tampa Bay Lightning, or is he headed for Free Agency?

Calgary is trying to get way more for Markstrom than he's worth, it's as simple as that. The odds are strong that unless the deal is close to completion and everyone is just reacting to rumors, that Calgary is going to blow any chance to get ANY value for Markstrom yet again. His value keeps dipping and the longer this goes on, the less likely any team is going to be willing to make a deal that doesn't end up being Calgary settling for peanuts.
@WaltBTB It seems to be the case. I hope Conroy is stuck with a disgruntled Markstrom, and is forced to trade him for pennies. The guy is a total moron.
Would love a prospect video for the draft, esp since we are possibly going to draft at 10. Want to know who you would take and hear what the general consensus is… always great content, either way
personally, I dont see anyone available being worth the 10th overall pick, all the goalies that the Devils could trade for are either too old or will need a new expensive contract. I'm willing to try Brossoit or Stolarz and let the season play out to hopefully get a goalie at the deadline if someone becomes available. Like you said, Markstrom is unhappy in Calgary, he'll want out all season long. The Devils have a great young core, this year is not the be all end all for this core, we have time. Look at Edmonton, they kept their picks, got Evan Bouchard 9th overall who took their team to the next level on a cheap deal
@kevinsemlitch8121 I would use the pick to get Markstrom if necessary, as long as it was NOT a straight up deal. For me to do that, Calgary would need to retain salary and send another piece(s) our way to balance out the trade. Brossoit would be my #1 Free Agency target. I would have loved a Brossoit/Stolarz tandem, but Jake Allen is cemented as the backup for next season at minimum. I can't see Markstrom not getting dealt this Summer. If this saga drags into next season, Markstrom will be beyond furious.
Just keep the young goalies away from Rogalsky. It’s crazy to me that we’re retaining him considering how many goalies we’ve gone through and that 0 of them had long term improvement and more than half had their play actually get significantly worse under him. With Laine, agree for the right price I’d do it. Maybe a team like Utah can be a broker using one of those fourth rounders or something to take an extra million or two. Laine is a win now move and also makes it easier to move someone like Holtz. Could be a younger, quicker, and after retention more affordable version of Toffoli for us
@reyrage15 I believe Rogalski is tight with Marty. Lots of people say he is great at his job. IDK what is going on exactly. I am of the belief that I cannot place too much blame on a position coach for our goalies sucking. Laine at a sensible price would be a lovely addition. I am all for the WIN NOW moves. These are the type of things I hope Fitz is looking at. Time will tell. The most anticipated Offseason in quite some time continues!

La, ottawa, Nj all made a push for ullmark in the second half of the season. All 3 teams were turned down cause ullmark has a 16 team no trade list and he refused to modify it. As for saros, apparently he might get extended now. Last i saw.....the maple leafs are heavily in on markstrom.
@@runninwiththedevils theres 5-6 teams that are fighting for markstrom right now. So NJ doesnt have the opportunity to ''lowball'' especially because ullmark has NJ on his no trade list and saros is getting extended.

Love your analysis, you're my go-to for everything Devils. These clowns on NHL network and other media outlets just make me laugh. Can't wait to see how it plays out, very excited for next season because the cup finals outcome was written the minute the Panthers beat the Rangers. Sweep coming.

@@p00l95 The Devils have a young goalie who eliminated the rags, and Kahkonnen. The Devils have assets to add pieces, unlike the rags, who lost ANOTHER year from their closing window. It must be scary knowing the top players on your bottom feeder original 6 team are into their 30s, while STILL not being good enough. Tick Tick Tick.

@@p00l95they are one year removed from making the playoffs and have had injury issues at key positions, along with an overall need to revamp at the goalie position. I don’t think most would agree with you on saying the Devils won’t make the playoffs in the ‘24-‘25 season.

A lot of teams need a goalie & def the Leafs are amongst the teams who i think are willing to overpay. Because I think a lot of teams will overpay, Devils best shot would be a 3 team deal to lower the ask on their end.
That said, if it were up to me..unpopular opinion.. skip the name brand goalie. Btwn the 5 goalies you mentioned in our system, I am willing to let that be what it is. I personally think we should go ALL in on defense & 3rd/4th line players. All quality , young (at least under 32 )depending on who is available. Skip the ‘more scoring’ temptation. Now I’m gonna rant as to why (lol sorry I’m passionate this AM)
You are 1000% correct- this team doesn’t have any leader that’s gonna call anyone out or hold anyone accountable.
The Hughes brothers could take another 5 years to hit the start of their prime. We have so many young players.
That said I am with you on “win now”, but while stacking the team for future seasons. I really think they gotta go all in on defensemen (I don’t know who or what’s available) and go in on gritty but quality 3rd or 4th liners. Who do the Panthers have that will want a ransom as free agents? I rather focus on solidifying that.
I think this team has a punchers chance this way. The goalie situation can be revisited before the trade deadline.

@@pucksnpicks I am fine with passing on Ullmark and Markstrom. I want to sign Brossoit. An Allen/someone else tandem scares the sh!t out of me for next season. I personally wanted a goalie, 2 defensemen and 2 forwards. It sounds like a lot, buttttt.....YESTERDAY a report came out that Tom Fitzgerald's Wish List is EXACTLY this. I was stunned. At least he is acknowledging that the roster needs some major revamping. There are a ton of guys available in Free Agency that he can look at to fill these holes.
I really don’t want to use our 10th pick, but why do I have a feeling we will end up drafting. In my opinion we must trade this pick at utmost urgency for something productive.

I don't mind Laine, assuming all the "issues" are sorted out. In terms of UFA forwards I'd love to see Bertuzzi, Tarasenko, or maybe Teravainen on the wing. Ullmark scares the hell out of me, the term he's gonna want... he's a good goalie though. I'd prefer Markstrom to be honest. Stamkos is a pipe dream... I'd have him on the Devils ANY day of the week though 😎
@steverobinson8771 I would want to talk to him in depth and see where his head is out. It is a risk as I mentioned, but at the right price I would give it a shot. I would geek out if we got Stammer somehow
As a flames fan I think we all expect the trade to be Van 1st 28th overall and marky 50% retained for 10th overall if it even happens

I'm not sold on Ullmark or Markstrom. Askarov was available and Fitz and Co passed. Biggest draft miss(so far unless Holtz turns around) after taking Chase Stillman with guys like Stankoven still on the board. NJD are dealt a poop sandwich now. The options are limited and none of them look like a slam dunk.

Askarov's asking price was probably outrageous. Preds are trying to capitalize on him being the next Saros, instead of them trading Saros and taking the risk themselves.
I mean everyone thought Spencer Knight was going to be in the position that Bobrovsky is currently in. And look what happened there.
No such thing as a sure thing when it comes to a young goalie and teams know not to pay Nashville's likely insane asking price.
@NothingToPointOut24 Spencer Knight just had some mental health issues that seem to be behind him now and I think he's still very capable of being a bona-fide NHL starter more so than either Schmid or Daws

@@krizlad Thats really not even the point. Im aware of Knight's mental health history but he along with Bobrovsky's play has probably written his ticket out of Florida. So if he becomes a success is going to be somewhere else. I wouldn't take him on as anything more than a project, but he, like Askarov is probably going to command something of value for much more than what they have currently proven. Which isnt much.
My point is, you cant say that this guy was available or that guy was available and a GM blew it because he didnt want to give up the likely Mercer plus a 1st that Nashville asked for. No Devils fan should want to give that up for an unknown goalie no matter how talented they might be.
Go get sam bennet the guys so gritty and can score would love to see him on a line with jack hughes.. hes a leasser more realistic idea than tkachuk rn

Bennett has probably gone from a guy worth under 6 mil a year to someone who is going to get 7+ based on what he's done in the playoffs. Id love a player like that, but let someone else make that mistake.

We didn't get anything of real value for Toffoli. The Sharangovich trade was a bad move made by a terrible general manager. Fitz should have been fired as soon as the clock reached zero on game 82. No GM did a worse job than him last season.

I may be in the minority here, but I would be happy re-signing Kaapo Kahkonen. He played well while he was here, he should come in at a reasonable cost, he's younger, and I think he is trending up. If we are going to trade our first round pick, I want a stud D-man, or something, "significant." I do not want a 30 or 34 year old goalie who is going to potentially cost megabucks. If Fitz can't make a deal, I hope he drafts Berkly Catton. I don't think it will take long for him to be in the NHL.
@sneakers8025 I would have loved a Markstrom/Kahkonen tandem. Fitz locked Allen in for next season. An Allen/Kahkonen tandem would be less than ideal. If Fitz goes out and gets a d-man or 2, they could be good enough. I hope we land the legitimate #1 goalie though....

Here’s the deal, Fitz needs to wake up and trade a big name or 2 from our roster. He knows to put on a set of balls.
Looks at Matthew Tkachuk trade. Huberdo was a fan favorite down here in south Florida but the GM had balls to make the trade because he know that’s the grit they needed.
Fitz had been so unremarkable it’s not even funny.

Flames fan here. Conroy sets a price for his assets and will pull the trigger when that price is met. If Jersey isn't willing to meet his price, there will be no trade. Simple. You can say what Conroy should do or must do, but that's the way it is.

He pissed off Markstrom months ago, and is only fanning the flames by dragging this out even longer. Markstrom can veto trades because of his NMC. It is pretty obvious that Conroy is backed into a corner here, yet he continues to believe he is dealing from a position of strength. Good luck with that. I hope the Devils move onto another option, I am done with this guy's games
The goalie market is ridiculous. All GM’s with a decent goalie are having super high EGO trips and demanding way too much for average middle to old age goaltenders. It’s a constant ego GM battle by Canada and other GM’s that want everything for an average goaltender player. It’s absurd!

If we draft, Zeev Buium and Sam Dickinson both seem like they'll be the real deal in the show. Iginla and Lindstrom will be gone before 10. Take the BPA even if it's a dman and trade someone else out of the pool. Hope we get a win-now player instead, though.

@JSnow-rv8ls There are so many quality players available in Free Agency that I would only want to trade the pick if we were getting someone truly special, like Brady Tkachuk. I would also use it to get a goalie if it made sense.
The saga with Markstrom has dragged on for a nauseating length, but I do think the deal will ultimately get done for a few reasons. It’s public knowledge Markstrom is done with the Flames, he has control over where he is traded and he approved a trade to NJ this season. At 34 he’s not interested in being dealt to a rebuilding team, he’s looking for one last shot at a cup so Ottawa is out and the Leafs are in a bit of an unknown state coming off this season. Toronto core could be dismantled, again not prime option for an aging netminder. Conroy is trying to play hardball but he doesn’t have the upper hand in this one. My guess is Markstrom plus salary retention for the 10th pick is the deal. Devils save a bit of cap space to use in free agency. NJ has been building through the draft for a number of years, it’s time to flip a first rounder to improve the position for even a couple seasons. Saros will want a cap nightmare of a contract after current deal is over and Ullmark may or may not cut it if expected to be the clear cut number one. As far as Laine goes, hard pass. Demanded his way out of Winnipeg and now doing the same in Columbus. Too much of a distraction, reminds me of Kovalchuk, he’s about himself and not the team. Focus on goaltending and adding some D with size and strength and let’s see what the boys can do. 2025 trade deadline is another opportunity to add more depth for a playoff run.

We can improve DRAMATICALLY by landing 2 of those guys for the blueline. I want Zadorov and one of Tanev, Dillon, Montour, Skjei, Pesce
Laine is a pure sniper with the SHOT! Nobody on the Devils has it. He is also LW, position the Devils struggle with. He is absolutely worth the risk with retention. And if 10OA required to get him it needs to be done

Definitely inquire about Binnington. He will cost a lot(10 OA, roster player, prospect) but, he led the league in GSAE, proven playoff performer, and has 3 years left at $6 mill. Hofer is the goalie of the future there.
@KennySlack I would take a shot on Binnington at the right price. I would certainly not consider a package as rich as the one you suggested. That is a ton to give for him.

We’re no longer a franchise with a winning pedigree & track record of success & stability to try to take on reclamation projects.
We were like 20 years ago, but that ship has long ago sailed.
A Laine reclamation project would be a nice side project, but it’s a luxury that we can’t afford, even if they do take on some salary as you suggested, but more importantly, with all our issues, do we really need THAT distraction?
@Dino-lu4mq Fair points and I totally get it. I think he has tremendous upside that can be tapped into if he is in the right scenario. I would personally take the gamble at the right price, but I certainly understand those that wouldn't want to.
Honestly I wouldn’t go with markstrom. I think the devils should focus more on ullimark or Saros. Both are younger players and better save percents. If you can give the 10th pick and maybe hotlz for ullimark I’m happy with it. Jacob markstrom for the 10th pick is a horrible deal. Player that should be untouchable Mercer,Simon,Casey.
@tmac848 Ullmark and Saros are both going to cost a fortune in trade and then contract co$t. I like Markstrom for the 2 years left on his deal, especially if Calgary is retaining some salary on him. The Devils will not trade the #10 pick to Calgary for Markstrom straight up. I can see potential deals where Mercer or Casey get dealt. Nemec should be a NEAR untouchable.

Devils and the rangers came out even this year. We both won the same amount of Stanley cups THIS season. Rangers fans got to shut their mouths.

I'm ok using the tenth pick for Ullmark but not for Markstrom. They should be able to get Markstrom for less. If not Calgary needs to sweeten the pot some more. As for Ullmark, send the tenth pick and make the other player contingent on weather Ullmark can be signed to a long term contract or not. All this said its not over yet, there is still time for the Markstrom deal to happen. Like you with Ullmark, I would not be unhappy with Markstrom but I think Ullmark is the best option for this team NOW.

Yeah I was really set on Markstrom..but it looks like Calgary is really playing games. This is really stupid on their part. What are you gonna do? Piss off one of your goalies because you are greedy? Just wondering what's going on with Michael McLeod and Foote? Are they coming back next season? I haven't heard any updates and just think we need McLeod back, he's a big help on faceoffs.

@@njswampfox474 No. Acquitted or not, the Devils won't welcome McLeod back. That's just the way they are. I can see the rest of the league following suit. (with all of the players involved) They want to distance themselves as far as possible from any "controversy". The trial supposedly isn't going to start for almost another year or something crazy. I will say, IF the players are found innocent...I hope they sue a lot of people for tens of million$. This whole thing essentially ruined all of their careers.

I get the feeling some commentators will talk about a team but clearly don't follow that team. That guy heard NJ needs a goalie, and doesn't have any more context than that. That's my guess. EJ Radek is another guy who has sounded clueless about the Devils a few times.
@bted Even Saros represents risk. That would be the priciest goaltender acquisition of them all! Assets to get him AND contract afterwards. If he falls apart in year 3 or 4, you blew substantial assets to land him, and are on the hook for $8M-ish for years after. I don't know how they send guys out on TV to talk complete and utter nonsense about a potential deal. I am all for speculations, etc. But have it rooted in SOME reality. The suggestions from that dude were completely insane

Stamkos here would bring excellent leadership qualities to a young team and he still is a productive player. Laine I feel is shot. He may give you a highlight reel goal on occasion, but all too often checks out and looks disinterested.

Ok, I was exaggerating when I said Saros for the 10th and Holtz...but the point is, what Calgary is asking for Markstrom, I could throw in another prospect or draft pick and get Saros. Markstrom, at this point is not a value...he is over-priced.
Fitz should zoom call Calgary. Then in the middle of the call, pop Vegas in and use the 10th to sure up the defense/forward position and watch Calgary crap themselves.

Here’s a proposal… laine 50 percent retained for 10th overall and stillman, you give up 10th in order get 50 percent then you have him on a 4 million contract for 2 years to prove him self. If he hits then the package you give up is meanless.

I think the Devils will pass on Jacob Markstrom, trade John Marino, Akira Schmid, Nathan Bastian, Nolan Foote, the 139th pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, and a 2025 4th-rounder to the Bruins for Jeremy Swayman, sign Jeremy to an 8-year contract extension worth $96 million ($12 million AAV a year), and sign Anthony Stolarz to a 3-year contract worth $6.3 million ($2.1 million AAV a year), so next season, Jeremy and Anthony will form one of the best goalie tandems the Devils have ever seen since Martin Brodeur and Chris Terreri.

@WuShocks his age doesn’t bother me. He could have been a good 2 year stopgap. Look at Bobrovsky this playoffs at age 35. Marty brought the Devils to the Cup Finals in 2012 at age 40.

The goalie market is way too expensive or too risky. Logan Thompson or bring back Kakko. We don't need to get fleeced or bring on more soft injury prone forwards like Laine or Stamkos. Stop. The main goal is getting Seigs and Marino OFF this team. Devils WILL NOT win a cup or even playoff series with Marino, Seigs and a young Nemec, Hughes on defense. It's laughable no one talks about the defense. If you somehow you accomplish that then you need depth physical forwards. We are a two-line team that gets too easily worn down. God knows McDermitt will be gassed after his usual 6 minutes of ice time.
@jimgoodyear6756 I would be scared shitless with Allen/Kahkonen. I would have LOVED a Markstrom/Kahkonen tandem or a Brossoit/Kahkonen tandem. Fitz has committed to Jake Allen. You are crazy if you wouldn't want Stamkos at the right price. Guy is a gamer and a winner. Laine is more of a gamble for sure. A gamble I would take at the right price was well. I can understand people being hesitant on that one. I would love to deal both Marino and Siegs and upgrade them with some combination of Zadorov, Tanev, Montour, Dillon, Skjei, Pesce, etc. Everyone here has talked about the D quite a bit over the past couple of months. There are some forwards I would love in Free Agency as well...
