@pucksnpicks I couldn't agree more. Last year Markstrom midseason would have got us to the playoffs. I do believe someone will overpay for Ullmark. I do not think the risk was worth the reward. I think this Markstrom deal has tremendous upside, without giving away the farm to make it happen. Stay tuned, after this summer and the rest of the deals are done, I think we are going to slowly creep up that list of Cup contenders....
Since Bobrovsky is so close to him in age I looked up both of their career stats. Bob has played in over 200 more games than Markstrom and is still going strong. Seems like most people that are looking at his age as a negative really arent taking that into consideration. Markstrom spent a lot of seasons as a backup or part timer before grabbing the reigns in Vancouver and moving onto Calgary. And most times when he's had a strong team in front of him, he has played up to that potential.
@mayerbasic7004 I think a tandem of Markstrom/Allen gives us competent goaltending most nights, with occasionally flashes of ELITE in there. A great deal by Fitz. He needs to continue on the path. LET'S GO DEVILS!!!
Well, we seriously needed a goalie but I put Markstrom in the risky category. He's betterthan Jake Allen for sure, but he's been fairly inconsistent on a year-to-year basis lately. That said, I think he'll be refreshed by the change of scene and he'll be good. I think of him as a stop-gap. Again I think Bahl was given way too much defensive responsibility because of injuries this past year, just like Luke and Nemec, and he wasn't quite ready for it. He's going to be pretty good someday and we're going to feel about him the way we feel about Sharangovich - lost a long-term player for a short-term addition. If Fitz gets a couple of big veteran defensemen to fill in his spot, I'll feel better. Not to put a wet blanket on this. I'm glad Fitz got it done. But still a ways to go.
@bted Every player comes with a certain level of risk. i think Markstrom is going to be great for us. The change of scenery hopefully does him wonders. He is a short term solution until one of the kids hopefully is ready to take over in 2-3 years. We will never feel the same way about Bahl as Sharangovich. It isn't possible. I do expect Bahl to develop into a better player though.... Fitz needs to bring in Zadorov and Tanev, Montour, Dillon, Skjei, etc etc

Bahl never learned to use his size so I'm totally ok with him going the other way, plus with retention on Markstrom's salary... that's a win. I wish Siegenthaler could get unloaded next, as he's now the weakest link on the D, makes dumb plays, and has been regressing. With Markstrom here I'd like to see Fitz draft Mikhail Yegorov. Between him, Daws, Schmid, and Malek one of them has to hit.

As a Flames fan, Markstrom played very well last year, and stole so many games. However, he can be quite bipolar year to year, but hopefully he plays well for the Devils

I saw a rumor today that Askarov is being shopped again (probably anticipating Saros getting a long-term deal done). That's the only goalie I'd STILL be willing to trade 10th OA for even with Markstrom acquired. There are no 1st round worthy goalie prospects in this draft class imo, but they'll get a blue chip skater if they make the pick. (I also agree with Ace, I think one of our guys will pan out internally - but if Askarov is available that's awfully tempting imo)

I really would like the Devils to get Jake DeBrusk. Would be a good bottom 6 guy that can plug into the top 6 if someone get hurt. Shouldn't cost too much . Stamkos, Guentzel or Reinhart should be the other high end signing if we can't get a top end forward through a trade. Zadorov and one of either Pesce or Carrier to round out our D. I think these are the guys we need to get.

Pump the brakes Ace. Before you put the knee pads on for our crappy GM, this trade was in the works for months and probably the only team who needed him and that he would agree to go to. Let's see him get Brady Tkachuk and some size on D and I'll let him up off the floor. And yes this is a very temporary move, the oldest goalie tandem in the league. Markstrom needs solid D in front of him, his best season reflects the D he had in front of him. Your going off his lifetime stats so you aren't making any earth shattering predictions. It's out there, but I love the nemec for tkachuk straight up trade. We have 3 young D that are all very similar in terms of style of play.

Regarding the nemec trade. All fans hate seeing a player get better elsewhere. I'm ok with a one for one deal because Nemec will be a 15goal 50 assist defenseman but he is 6 foot 1 and doesn't hit anybody. We already have Luke who should hopefully surpass those numbers. Casey will be better than both of them. Book it!

Markstrom is a 71 year old slightly above average goalie. The Flames will be receiving a high 1st round pick from the Devils in 2025. This is almost as awful as the Sharangovich trade was.

As a Flames fan , I appreciate you acknowledging how difficult it’s been for us losing so many players over the past couple years. It’s been tough. I’m glad Marky is going to the Devils. He’s a quality person and player. With Wolf in our system , this loss hurts a little less ... as long as Wolf keeps developing (hopefully) into a star in the league. And happy to add a big , young defenseman in Bahl. With our decimated blue line , he’ll definitely get a golden opportunity for lots of ice time here. Hope Marky is one of the pieces that takes the Devils to the promised land.

It’s an inevitable part of sports and really sucks; but makes the good times THAT much better when they happen. Calgary got a good project piece IMO in Bahl. They need him to smarten up a bit with some decision making and embrace playing a tough, physical game. The man is a monster. He needs to play like one. I hope Markstrom can bring the Cup back to NJ for us.

This is an incredible move by Fitz. Upgraded between the net ten fold at minimal cost. Didn’t cost the number 10, or Casey, or Holtz, or Mercer. Fitz is winning me back over. We all had the fear he would take the easy way out and hire Green as head coach, but he sealed the deal with Keefe. We feared he would run back the tandem of Allen and Kahkonen, Markstrom trade is signed sealed and delivered. And I truly believe the upgrades on forwards and D he talked about will also happen through trades and free agency. I am one of those guys who is into stockpiling picks and building team identity from within; fortunately, the Devils hardly gave away the store. The thing that scares me (and I know you saw this as well), is the defensive core. Not even Corey Schneider in his prime could have reached a 90% save percentage with what I saw last year: two opposition forwards, routinely, game after game standing alone, jamming loose pucks in the crease, while guys in Devils sweaters were behind the said forwards. So, on paper we have an upgrade in goal; if there aren’t changes on the backline in personnel or philosophy, Markstrum’s numbers WILL go down. Do you think Fitzgerald will make any other moves on the backline, and who would you like to see moved? Thanks. Great show and the great est guitar tones known to man.
@robertlamkin6464 The defensive core was atrocious last year. As a result, Fitz will revamp it THIS summer. Step 1 is out of the way. Our feature goaltender is here. In the same move we sent out 1 defenseman. 1 more defenseman will be moved out, and Fitzy will bring in 2 defenseman to round out this blueline. Fitz isn't foolish enough to believe Markstrom is gonna singlehandedly resurrect this team from the dead. Fitzgerald will trade either Siegenthaler or Marino out, and sign 2 of the MANY defenseman available in Free Agency. Markstrom and *2* new defenseman, make this team look ENTIRELY different. Dougie Hamilton back, and hopefully some more development from Luke and Nemec....things are on the up and up. Thanks for watching! As a Flames fan. I don't mind the traded. This finally happened. As for the the for what Flames get, I like the young defenceman. I don't know much for Bahl, but it sound like he is going to be guy. Can't wait to see what he can do with the Flames. As for the 1st round 2025, at least we get a 1 round. Now I heard lots of this year 10 picked, but I feel that it would be hard to get. NJ did a really good job on this traded. First keep all the players that have been rumored and keep the 10 picked. They only way this would have happeened it that that Markstrom had a NTC and he could tell where he want to go. So that is where he can get Flames hand tied. That makes NJ get the deal they want. So I am not anary for our GM. Now you had said he played games. But having a NTC player you can't do much on that.
Let’s not forget the 31% contract retention by Calgary on Markstrom’s contract. That’s only a $4k cap hit, so we have $12-ish million of cap space right now. A great deal by Fitz! Feeling good about the season so far!

I Like The Markstorm Trade and i like to believe that it was Fitz who was playing Conroy like a fiddle because NOT only did we get Markstorm, but in the end we got him with Calgary retaining 30% of his salary so we didn't get him full price so that's and win in my books, and in the end we only gave Calgary a 2025 first rounder and Kevin Bahl who will missed on this team. Now all we need to do is lock in Dawson Mercer for a good 4-8 years and find a Top 6 D and Top 6 F then we should be golden. LETS GO DEVILS!!!!

Im not thrilled at all giving up Bahl who had 1 season here at 23yrs old. Im sure Calgary wanted Bahl, what a pickup. Im sure no one wanted Holtz since Fitz, Ruff bashed that kid.

Markstrum was not my first choice but I’m not upset over this deal. The devils got to keep their #10 pick which they can use for another of the missing pieces. I probably would have rather given up Siegenthaler over Bahl but it is what it is. The fact the Flames are retaining 30% of his salary (approx 2mm per season) which helps with the cap. Also the 2025 pick is top 10 protected. So if the devils suck ass again and get a top 10 pick in 2025 they get to keep it. It’s hard to complain about this deal.
@Dirks_NUMA_Files This is a great move on so many levels! I am sure Fitz tried to dump Siegs on them. Bahl has more upside and makes far less. He was a far more attractive piece to the Flames. The salary retention piece came out a little later after I was recording. This move is SOLID. Fitzy outdid himself here!

2 years is perfect & teams are going to go CRAZY overpaying for goalies in 2 weeks. Devils are not a Stanley Cup team YET, I rather not mortgage the future for Ullmark or some other young question mark.
@pucksnpicks I couldn't agree more. Last year Markstrom midseason would have got us to the playoffs. I do believe someone will overpay for Ullmark. I do not think the risk was worth the reward. I think this Markstrom deal has tremendous upside, without giving away the farm to make it happen. Stay tuned, after this summer and the rest of the deals are done, I think we are going to slowly creep up that list of Cup contenders....
Since Bobrovsky is so close to him in age I looked up both of their career stats. Bob has played in over 200 more games than Markstrom and is still going strong. Seems like most people that are looking at his age as a negative really arent taking that into consideration.
Markstrom spent a lot of seasons as a backup or part timer before grabbing the reigns in Vancouver and moving onto Calgary. And most times when he's had a strong team in front of him, he has played up to that potential.

Well, we seriously needed a goalie but I put Markstrom in the risky category. He's betterthan Jake Allen for sure, but he's been fairly inconsistent on a year-to-year basis lately. That said, I think he'll be refreshed by the change of scene and he'll be good. I think of him as a stop-gap.
Again I think Bahl was given way too much defensive responsibility because of injuries this past year, just like Luke and Nemec, and he wasn't quite ready for it. He's going to be pretty good someday and we're going to feel about him the way we feel about Sharangovich - lost a long-term player for a short-term addition. If Fitz gets a couple of big veteran defensemen to fill in his spot, I'll feel better.
Not to put a wet blanket on this. I'm glad Fitz got it done. But still a ways to go.
@bted Every player comes with a certain level of risk. i think Markstrom is going to be great for us. The change of scenery hopefully does him wonders. He is a short term solution until one of the kids hopefully is ready to take over in 2-3 years. We will never feel the same way about Bahl as Sharangovich. It isn't possible. I do expect Bahl to develop into a better player though....

That's the only goalie I'd STILL be willing to trade 10th OA for even with Markstrom acquired. There are no 1st round worthy goalie prospects in this draft class imo, but they'll get a blue chip skater if they make the pick.
(I also agree with Ace, I think one of our guys will pan out internally - but if Askarov is available that's awfully tempting imo)

I really would like the Devils to get Jake DeBrusk. Would be a good bottom 6 guy that can plug into the top 6 if someone get hurt. Shouldn't cost too much . Stamkos, Guentzel or Reinhart should be the other high end signing if we can't get a top end forward through a trade. Zadorov and one of either Pesce or Carrier to round out our D. I think these are the guys we need to get.

Let's see him get Brady Tkachuk and some size on D and I'll let him up off the floor. And yes this is a very temporary move, the oldest goalie tandem in the league. Markstrom needs solid D in front of him, his best season reflects the D he had in front of him. Your going off his lifetime stats so you aren't making any earth shattering predictions. It's out there, but I love the nemec for tkachuk straight up trade. We have 3 young D that are all very similar in terms of style of play.

Regarding the nemec trade. All fans hate seeing a player get better elsewhere. I'm ok with a one for one deal because Nemec will be a 15goal 50 assist defenseman but he is 6 foot 1 and doesn't hit anybody. We already have Luke who should hopefully surpass those numbers. As a Flames fan , I appreciate you acknowledging how difficult it’s been for us losing so many players over the past couple years. It’s been tough. I’m glad Marky is going to the Devils. He’s a quality person and player. With Wolf in our system , this loss hurts a little less ... as long as Wolf keeps developing (hopefully) into a star in the league. And happy to add a big , young defenseman in Bahl. With our decimated blue line , he’ll definitely get a golden opportunity for lots of ice time here. Hope Marky is one of the pieces that takes the Devils to the promised land.

This is an incredible move by Fitz. Upgraded between the net ten fold at minimal cost. Didn’t cost the number 10, or Casey, or Holtz, or Mercer. Fitz is winning me back over. We all had the fear he would take the easy way out and hire Green as head coach, but he sealed the deal with Keefe. We feared he would run back the tandem of Allen and Kahkonen, Markstrom trade is signed sealed and delivered. And I truly believe the upgrades on forwards and D he talked about will also happen through trades and free agency. Great day to be a Devils fan and can’t wait to see what else Fitz has up his sleeve this summer.

I am one of those guys who is into stockpiling picks and building team identity from within; fortunately, the Devils hardly gave away the store.
The thing that scares me (and I know you saw this as well), is the defensive core. Not even Corey Schneider in his prime could have reached a 90% save percentage with what I saw last year: two opposition forwards, routinely, game after game standing alone, jamming loose pucks in the crease, while guys in Devils sweaters were behind the said forwards.
So, on paper we have an upgrade in goal; if there aren’t changes on the backline in personnel or philosophy, Markstrum’s numbers WILL go down.
Do you think Fitzgerald will make any other moves on the backline, and who would you like to see moved?

@robertlamkin6464 The defensive core was atrocious last year. As a result, Fitz will revamp it THIS summer. Step 1 is out of the way. Our feature goaltender is here. In the same move we sent out 1 defenseman. 1 more defenseman will be moved out, and Fitzy will bring in 2 defenseman to round out this blueline. Fitz isn't foolish enough to believe Markstrom is gonna singlehandedly resurrect this team from the dead. Fitzgerald will trade either Siegenthaler or Marino out, and sign 2 of the MANY defenseman available in Free Agency. Markstrom and *2* new defenseman, make this team look ENTIRELY different. Dougie Hamilton back, and hopefully some more development from Luke and Nemec....things are on the up and up. Thanks for watching! He's not the answer for the future, but he could help Dawes be that answer. I don't like losing a first round pick and a defenseman, but at least some of his salary is retained

As a Flames fan. I don't mind the traded. This finally happened. As for the the for what Flames get, I like the young defenceman. I don't know much for Bahl, but it sound like he is going to be guy. Can't wait to see what he can do with the Flames. As for the 1st round 2025, at least we get a 1 round. Now I heard lots of this year 10 picked, but I feel that it would be hard to get. NJ did a really good job on this traded. First keep all the players that have been rumored and keep the 10 picked. They only way this would have happeened it that that Markstrom had a NTC and he could tell where he want to go. So that is where he can get Flames hand tied. That makes NJ get the deal they want. So I am not anary for our GM. Now you had said he played games. But having a NTC player you can't do much on that.

Let’s not forget the 31% contract retention by Calgary on Markstrom’s contract. That’s only a $4k cap hit, so we have $12-ish million of cap space right now. A great deal by Fitz! Feeling good about the season so far!

Fitz got a lot of heat for last szn even tho it's 90% on the players and our fanbase loves to use scapegoats like no other. Kept the 10th, kept mercer and Casey. He's a good GM one bad szn doesn't define him.

I Like The Markstorm Trade and i like to believe that it was Fitz who was playing Conroy like a fiddle because NOT only did we get Markstorm, but in the end we got him with Calgary retaining 30% of his salary so we didn't get him full price so that's and win in my books, and in the end we only gave Calgary a 2025 first rounder and Kevin Bahl who will missed on this team. Now all we need to do is lock in Dawson Mercer for a good 4-8 years and find a Top 6 D and Top 6 F then we should be golden. LETS GO DEVILS!!!!

Im not super thrilled by this in a vacuum. Ill wait to see how the rest of the summer pans out. Much of any of this also relies alot on if they plan to play the same bullshit no defense pond hockey and quit after january, then this older guy will end up getting tatttoed and hurt as all the prior goaltenders in this franchise since....Marty? Im not thrilled at all giving up Bahl who had 1 season here at 23yrs old. Im sure Calgary wanted Bahl, what a pickup. Im sure no one wanted Holtz since Fitz, Ruff bashed that kid.

i like Markstrom, but i feel any 1st rounder might be a bit pricy for a 34 year old goalie. if the Devils traded any 1st round pick i would rather it have been for Ulmark. but maybe Boston's price was far steeper. btw, always enjoy your show

Got our over the hill goalie to maybe get out of the 1st round. .905 save percentage for a 1st rounder and former 2nd. Yikes Fitz is desperate. Holtz, Mercer and our 1st this year will go bye bye soon too.

Markstrum was not my first choice but I’m not upset over this deal. The devils got to keep their #10 pick which they can use for another of the missing pieces. I probably would have rather given up Siegenthaler over Bahl but it is what it is. The fact the Flames are retaining 30% of his salary (approx 2mm per season) which helps with the cap. Also the 2025 pick is top 10 protected. So if the devils suck ass again and get a top 10 pick in 2025 they get to keep it. It’s hard to complain about this deal.
@Dirks_NUMA_Files This is a great move on so many levels! I am sure Fitz tried to dump Siegs on them. Bahl has more upside and makes far less. He was a far more attractive piece to the Flames. The salary retention piece came out a little later after I was recording. This move is SOLID. Fitzy outdid himself here!
@@runninwiththedevils I think the focus now needs to be bolstering the defense, but to be fair that is where my knowledge is weakest (defenseman) it’s easy to just say they should go get the most popular player out there but that’s just stupid. I’m curious to see where Fitz goes from here
