  • Today Uncle Stonnie is talking about helping your Show Line German Shepherd puppy realize it's full potential! In this video Stonnie discusses his views related to proper training, socialization, and exercise, protocols that help German Shepherd puppies grow into happy, healthy, well socialized adult dogs!

    GSD Wiki:
The German Shepherd, also known in Britain as an Alsatian, is a German breed of working dog of medium to large size. The breed was developed by Max von Stephanitz using various traditional German herding dogs from 1899.
It was originally bred as a herding dog, for herding sheep. It has since been used in many other types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police work, and warfare. It is commonly kept as a companion dog, and according to the Fédération Cynologique Internationale had the second-highest number of annual registrations in 2013.
The Kennel Club, in the United Kingdom, is involved in a dispute with German Shepherd breed clubs about the issue of soundness in the show strain of the breed. Some show strains have been bred with an extremely roached topline (back) that causes poor gait in the hind legs.
The issue was raised in the BBC documentary, Pedigree Dogs Exposed, which said that critics of the breed describe it as "half dog, half frog". An orthopaedic vet remarked on footage of dogs in a show ring that they were "not normal".
The Kennel Club's position is that "this issue of soundness is not a simple difference of opinion, it is the fundamental issue of the breed's essential conformation and movement." The Kennel Club has decided to retrain judges to penalise dogs with these problems.

I think your way of training is Fantastic. After almost 40 yrs of training and showing dogs, I have tried more than a few as times have changed.
I do have a question, this video brought it to my mind. Later this yr, if things work as planned 😮😂, we are planning on moving to TX, hoping to buy some land. Having 5 German Shepherds who are used to going for walks just like you are doing in this video, could get into trouble in a state that has a ton of venomous snakes. I have done a bunch of research on how to keep your property from becoming a snake haven but it doesn't mean they wouldn't run into 1.
      Any tips????

I think you are doing a very good job of tiptoeing around the real problem here. Which is that poor dog is not built to be athletic. You said it, he is more fragile and it will take him longer to learn balance, etc. Breaks my heart to see the German shepherd bred for this body type.

Uncle Stonie is a good man and he loves these babies! and he is right: early socialization, proper obedience training and daily exercise (mental and physical) are absolute essentials for GSDs to be well adjusted dogs and realize their full potentials. Because their full potentials are to be the best family dogs, loving, caring, and protective. I currently have a 3 yr old show line GSD (before him I had a Labrador Retriever, but I was married at the time and didn't need the "protection" factor. Later as a single woman, protection factor was an important element for me).
I've spent a lot of time and energy for his socialization and training for the first 2 years of his life starting 10 weeks old, as we wanted to train him as a hearing dog for myself. I'm a teacher who travels a lot. So, he needed to be able to fly in the cabin 16+ hrs and stay calm and collective on a school campus with full of kids running around with balls, bicycles and skateboards. Now he is an excellent service animal and companion, but it took (and is still taking) a lot of work and attention.
Show line or not, GSDs are working dogs and they need a purpose, need a job. We exercise and train (play based, no treats) daily at least for an hour. Early exposure to every possible scenario, people, animals, machines, sounds is the key. Yes, they are very smart, but also highly independent, stubborn, and suspicious (Watch little Teddy how he is marching to his own drum). Leaving them to their own devices to make decisions is not the best idea. Leaving them alone all day without rigorous mental and physical stimulation is a recipe for a disaster. Lucky little Teddy is up for a great start with Uncle Stonie, but the rest depends on his human parents' dedication to give him an active, disciplined and social life.
Moral of the story is, please do not adopt GSDs for their looks. If you're prepared to provide them with a clearly defined job/ purpose, maintain an active and structured lifestyle, and commit to lifelong attention, fat vet bills (they do come with health problems), then these dogs can truly be your dream companions.

Fifty years ago, I really liked the German Shepherd and their looks. Not so much anymore. The breeding in America doesn't appear to've really improved the breed overall. The labs seem to appear so much more of a natural build and mechanics of how they move. God bless you Stonnie, and all your help there.

You want "working line" German Shepherds from a reputable breeder that knows what they're doing. There are plenty of breeders breeding working lines that are clueless. Also, generally speaking, "showlines" are garbage.

IMO, it’s a crime what breeders (especially in the USA) have bred GSD# into. Photos of GSD from 100 years ago don’t show any of that excessive angulation.

We had a wonderful GSD that we had for 11 1/2 years. She was the best dog we’ve ever lived with. She had a beautiful structure, but she did lose her sight when she was around six or seven years old. She was able to navigate anything after one day getting acclimated. We had people who were afraid of dogs who told us she was the only dog they didn’t fear❤

Ahhh. What a cutie. I have 4 show lines and 1 working line. All of them are imported and are longcoats. I had 1gsd that was Reactive. If it's not addressed...it becomes a long process to undo. I show mine so its important to be ok around people, other dogs and lots of strange noises. I also have 1 that ended up roachy. She is almost 9, thinks she's a Mal, has a pretty high drive and was very active in competitive sports.(scent work was her favorite. She would lay and stare at her harness). I had a Firm rule, until 2 yrs old...no jumping out of pickups, up and down stairs....things that cause excessive wear or stress on the joints. I worried about her, having spinal issues later. All are OFA Cert and have had DNA tested for DM and other genetic problems but that is never a guarantee. They aren't gawky so they can walk and gate good. Gsd's are my heart although I've had Brittany's and an Elkhound.
I started training in the 70s. Been through several different methods. I enjoy watching you, I train in a VERY similar manner. I'm glad you give them fun, learning, exercise. So many people just throw a ball but no mental stimulation, or all training but no fun. Or just throw them in the backyard. Fantastic!!!!!
For those who are new to training..... notice the calm voice, calm motions.... to me, this is very important in training a dog, especially a young dog. A dog is smart and picks up how you feel. You have to make it a positive experience or you will struggle. If a dog is afraid of you, its going to be hard for you. If you are having a bad day, walk away and train later!!!! Dogs are your best friend if you let them. ❤

…GSDs are my favorite breed. They are very loyal to their person. I have nothing negative to say about dear Teddy, as his structure and clumsiness are not his fault. He has a beautiful face, and I am certain he will improve daily. I previously owned a male show line and learned so much. Now I will only own a straight back, as I enjoy hiking and bike riding. 😁 🐶 🐾🖤

We adopted a 5 month old GSD mix (her mom was a working line GSD) from the shelter a few years ago. I didn't know anything about dogs, much less about how much the breed affects behavior and training or how important those first few months are. Made a lot of mistakes in the beginning by mainly just focusing on her "formal" training (which was easy because GSDs pick up patterns so quickly) and neglecting the socialization part of her training, which in my opinion is almost more important for GSDs. I'm sure she didn't have any good socialization before she got to us either and I didn't know how to deal with her reactivity until I started learning from people like Stonnie (and, randomly, a fantastic Petco trainer) who helped me work with her as an adult dog. They are low-confidence dogs, hence why they perceive so many things as threats. But building their confidence and creating positive experiences while they interact with the world has been so rewarding. Very grateful for all the info you put out there Stonnie and looking forward to more GSD content!

yeah, your are right, these dogs don’t get enough exposure so they don’t stop guarding, because people think that’s all they good for. Now I am a German Shepherd kinda girl and I love how GS can think for themselves, my dog guarded, protected but played like a little child when the time was right. My dog even saved my baby from drowning without any command given. But I have to say, my dog goes everywhere I go, we traveled around the world together(planes, trucks, cars walks), guess he was exposed :-) .
I will never understand news of GS’s attacking a newborn on the couch or other horror stories. Out of all dogs the GS knows whats right and who is wrong(that’s just my believe and have been my experiences)

Hey Stonnie, been watching since I started puppy raising for a seeing eye org 6 yrs ago. I raised a western working line GSD, and their loss ha, bc she and her entire litter were reassigned (deemed not suitable guide dogs after a yr if socialization and 2 obedience courses with me (different raisers with the mates), along with daily work and then 10 weeks back with them at boot camp).
My family adopted her and she is THE BEST dog. Smart as a whip , always eager to learn and fiercely loyal.
She gets triggered by smaller yappers, but she's working on trying not to react/judging when she needs to protect vs overreacting.
I have one question- she's always been this way and no matter how much I work with her, I can't seem to teach her not to do this- she insists on being first!! Like a bratty kindergartner who always has to be the line leader!!! Any suggestions? I ask for a sit or a down, then a wait. But, no matter-as soon as she sees someone open the door or start down a trail, she pops up and about yanks your arm off trying to get ahead of whomever is first. Be it human or another dog, it doesn't matter. She insists that she is getting ahead of everyone and she is the line leader!!
She's otherwise a truly amazing dog!! She herds my chickens into the coop at dusk. She understands our property line and never leaves it even when the neighbor puts his dogs out on their cable tie. She will do almost anything for her ball!! Except let someone else be at the head of the line!!
Oh, she also refuses to load up into our canoe. I plan on setting it up and pezzing her with treats every time she gets in, and sits. Just need my hubby to set it up for our daily work. I know she'll get it with daily practice
Have a great week!! Your channel is the best!! (I was hoping you'd address the SD Gov's decision to shoot her 14 no old hunting pup as I highly respect your opinion as a trainer and dog lover. And Hunter)

Two years of fun so far with my own show- line GSD, it's taking a ridiculous amount of time for him to grok that I wont turn him loose at the park to join his kelpie sister till he acknowledges me. Lord give me patience! That and the concept of personal space lol. It is wonderful to see him bounding- run after so long being a bit wobbly, worth the wait.

My WGSL pup is one year old. When he was going through those first few months I hand feed him some of his food while having him climb over and under my legs and hoping in and out of his crate. The pups grow so fast at first that they have no idea how big their body is, where their feet are, etc.
I love this approach. I used to have a massive fenced in yard where we could play like Stonnie does. If we walk on leash I like to use 15 feet leashes if allowed.

There’s a GSD down the street from us. I’ve seen him since he was a puppy…but now, he’s become vicious, pulls the kids and parents when on the leash and barks his head off. He’s bitten a neighbor once already. He’s not socialized at all. I’ve walked our black lab late at night at times and last week he stopped, put his head down and seemed to sense something. Well, guess what? It was that GSD. My lab turned around and wanted to head back to our house. Often, their house is dark and the GSD is barking his head off again. Clearly he’s not socialized…Quite honestly, I feel sorry for the GSD.

Hi, Stonnie. Your videos and approaches are super. I am not a professional dog trainer, but I like it so much (I dived into the behaviorism concept for dogs and traditional methods) and joined many seminars with international experts.
I can tell you that everything you do and you share, in your own way, matches the lessons that I learned.
Thank you so much for bringing all the concepts quickly and smoothly.
I have only one question: I could see in this video and in past videos that you work mainly based on food rewards. You know that for other "canine sport dogs" (KNPV, Mondio Ring, French Ring, ...) it is common to reward based on a kind of "game" (bite game). What is your opinion about it? I mean, what are the good and bad points in such an approach?

    • @StonnieDennis
      @StonnieDennis  14 днів тому +1

That’s a great question. Perhaps I’ll make a video series related to those issues.
The short answer is that my videos show me doing foundation work, usually with young puppies. We use food work protocols to help puppies understand how to gain access to things they desire; once that foundation is built, and the puppies understand the concept of access via indirect action, we can switch the motivator to suit the purpose.
Ultimately though, we fade away from extrinsic motivators very quickly and rely on habit to drive the adult dog’s behavior.

The poor dogs can't even walk properly anymore, and end up with so much pain and discomfort from those completely out of wack angles and proportions. I'm glad some countries are starting to crack down on this kind of insane breeding. Like with the Cavalier King Charles' skulls literally being bred to be too small to house their brain, and countless other examples of horrible stuff done to dogs, primarily stemming from a combination of psychopaths in dog shows and ignorant customers.

Totally agree, creating freak dogs with exaggerated features causing suffering in the name of vanity and a very very far cry from the dogs original conformation which was nearly always based on functionality and work demands. Luckily in uk there are a few breeders who are getting gsd conformation, temperament and drive back to Max von Stephanitz original breeding purpose.

Extremely sad to see shoreline GSD distorted body. What they have turned a wolf like dog into 😢.
Who thinks he is a normal healthy strong looking dog with that crooked back… what a tragedy and what a shame….

No working breed should be only show dogs
    Form follows function
If the dogs don't work how can they be working breeds

That poor puppy just wants to sit down. The back legs are all wrong. Seeing this in another breed would be seen as malformed. A healthy bred German Shepherd should be athletic as it's a working breed. Not a hunch backed wobbly creature in a lifetime of pain. I see one locally being "walked." It can't really walk. It stumbles. Heartbreaking.

His rear and back legs look deformed and painful.

I'm sorry but that poor puppy looks deformed. These breeders need to check themselves and do better for the sake of the dogs and less for show especially because it doesn't even look good...

They have ruined the German Shepherd. That angulation cannot be healthy
