Fralin Hum Cancelling P-90's... in a Tele! (HD)

  • The guitar Lindy is playing in this video is very interesting. The body is the infamous "Bubbacaster" built by eclectic Virginia luthier Steve Hudgins (who also plays bass in the Bopcats.) Tom Rodriguez built the neck many years ago. This guitar is unique in that it's set up with a pair of Lindy's awesome Hum Cancelling P-90's which are wired through a blender pot with a push/pull phase switch. The results are amazing!

All these videos by Lindy Fralin are excellent, specially this one with that fantastic guitar and the blender circuit. It is like those P90s were born to be on a Tele. Amazing pickup design and cool playing by the way.

I added a set of these into my new Yamaha RS520t REVSTAR which was already equipped from Yamaha with a really nice set their own version of P-90s. I was ASTONISHED {and still am astonished} at the difference in not only the tone, but in the output volume level as well. While I was working on the pickup swap over, I thought to myself that maybe I should have made a short video of the "before and after" sounds of the two different pickups sets, just for myself thinking that perhaps I might not have been able to tell much of a difference between the factory Yamaha P-90s and the Lindy's P-90s, but nothing could have been farther from the truth in that regard! NOW I am wishing that I had done that video after all, so that I could be demonstrating to others what an AMAZING change in sound these new Lindy P-90 pickups have created in my already wonderful sounding guitar. This video with Lindy here does NOT do these pickups justice! Referring back to my mentioning the increase in volume output level from Lindy's P-90s, I even had to go back into my SAMPLETANK 4 software and adjust ALL the volume levels UP in order for the midi instrument levels to "blend" evenly with my guitar volume level when adding my guitar into the mix along with them. I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, RECOMMEND THESE pickups!! RICH - WARM - CRISP - CHIMING - GORGEOUS TONES!!! ~ Thank you Lindy!!!!

Thank you for your comment! I am interested in buying both a p90 equipped Revstar and a set of hum-cancelling pups. Do the Fralins work with the dry switch? And did you have to change the pots?

@@benjimontgomery9826 I think the P90's in the RS 502 are absolute perfection, nothing would make me change them. I did put a set of these Fralins in my SG and they sound great, but those Revstar P90's belong in a 502 in my opinion.

Some friends and I built a Thinline Telecaster routed for P90s. I am a worship minister for a living so I usually play through a pedal board (with Amp sim, Strymon Iridium), drive pedals and into a PA via a Shure wireless system. Hum can be an issue.
With all of that said, I originally put affordable pickups (GuitarFetish) in the guitar. The guitar turned out to be such a beautiful and great playing guitar that I now want high end pickups to match it playability. I want an authentic p90 sound but with less hum . . . . thoughts? Would these work?

I know this is an old video, but help me out. The push pull pot does what? Does it function as a tone control when down and then when up it bypasses the pickup selector and is just both pickups on - out of phase - and the push pull then becomes a volume control for the bridge pickup so you can blend the sound to avoid having maximum cancellation, which Lindy mentions? If so, is there a schematic on Lindy's site?

    Lindy,
Love the sound of these. I was originally thinking of going with your split blades for my tele with vintage neck and 5% bridge. After listening to this I changed my mind, thats the exact tone I was looking for. My only question is you mention P-90's w/ this much mid-range break up a little quicker. What does that mean?
    Thanks Michael

oh and are the dimensions of the soapbar pickup different or require a deeper pickup rout over a standard p90 soapbar? Duncan stacked p90s require a deeper body rout in some cases as they are a physically larger pickup.

Hi Lindy. Would you please tell if this was the 42 or 43 gauge version? What would be the best wind for them to get in the early Freddie King p90s ballpark? The idea would be using them with a brighter Les Paul (with neck thru design and Ebony fingerboard). Cheers.

I understand basic concepts, and am handy with a soldering iron.. but "phase switch" isn't something I understand. So not funky but bluesy. But this blender pot also can deliver the sound of Peter Green who liked to play out of fase.

lindy can you help me. i have a custom humbucker routed guitar w rosewood neck. a big single in the neck wound dark w 43 gauge and i want to find a perfect pair for it to put in the bridge. im changing my pots to 500k bc the big single is way too dark right now. i want something that has the warmth and fullness of a humbucker but the juiciness and glassy clarity of a single coil. i dont like twangy or thin trebly sounds but want it balanced as i finger pick a lot. i need it smooth when distorted and to break up clean only when i dig in. i would love to be able to coiltap when i play surf music so i was looking at the sunbucker but am afraid itll ge too bright w the 500k. maybe a p92 in the bridge w lower turns or hum cancelling p90 in bucker cover -5%?

    Hi Lindy.
I have some questions for you.
I want to replace the PUs in my old Gibson LP Firebrand (all Mahogany - more like an SG - great guitar).
I would like to try those P90s unless you say unbuckers or PAFs would be a better choice for this particular guitar.
Do the P90s fit in the old Humbucker holes? (if not I probably can make them fit)
Do you ship to Germany? Color of choice would be "creme".
    I can't decide: PAFs, Unbuckers, P90s? Let's try those P90s!
    Please help and thanks!

    • @StopMoColorado
      @StopMoColorado 6 років тому

I hear it, too, 60 Hz buzz. Sounds like noise pollution from a fluorescent light setup, could be coming through the cables or through the amp (tube amps make their own noise, too, some worse than others), even the mic setup. I lived in an - electrically - very "dirty" house recently, lots of weird shorts, flickering lightbulbs, etc., and even my humbucking guitars through solid state amps buzzed badly, especially if I faced certain directions while playing (face-up, on the guitar, was the worst, for some reason). I listened through two different phones' speakers and through earbuds, definitely some hum in the video, but I want some Fralin Noiseless Strat pickups for a couple of my guitars.
Any surface-mount Noiseless PU's? I've got a Parker Mojo Dragonfly that has MISERABLE sounding mini-humbuckers in it, in Middle and Neck positions. I can't stand them, keeps me from playing the guitar plugged in at all, just dead/flat sounding. I love the build, the neck (especially the SS frets), the lightness of the guitar, but the pickup configuration needs some serious attention.
