- www.fralinpicku... NEW! Big Single
A new kind of humbucker. This pickup has a big, round single coil sound with no hum.
It is in-between the P92 and Twangmaster in output but like them has a big round single coil tone.
It is thicker sounding than the Twangmaster but not as aggressive as the P92. It can be made in 42g wire from 6,000 to 7,000 turns and 43g wire up to 9,000 turns for more output and a darker tone.
This pickup can be also made in a Firebird style cover (see mini humbucker page).
Is this the 42 with 250k or 43 gauge with 500k?
Mike, you're demos are in a different league...Big fan.Very good taste.Keep them coming...Best Regards
Single coil in steriods. Love them! I would like to hear the difference of this with the p92s and twangmaster
Wow, cool pups. That bridge sounds particularly unique.
These are cool. Very clear for Humbuckers. And zero hum unlike single coils...
I'm loving everything about this, most of all the actual track.
Great playing...this demo convinced me to buy a set of these pickups.
Hi Mike! First off, thanks for doing what you do. Your attention to detail in demos is simply impeccable.
Not too long ago, you posted some demos of the Alnico-rod noiseless P90. This and the Big Single seem to cover a lot of similar ground and both fit the bill for an all-purpose guitar that I'm putting together. I know this video is quite old but how do the two differ in terms of feel - and which would be your choice for jazz work? Kindly, Niels
I’m in the process of building a “Partscaster” “Superstrat” with an older body which I “designed” the artwork, therefore I’m attached to this body which sadly has a humbucker rout in the neck position.
I could just slap a “single” plate over the rout but this looks like a more desirable option. I’m always chasing tone, the best example of is from SRV’s song “Lenny”. That gorgeous, glassy, snappy, poppy sound that responds to finger dynamics, gets that spank on a fingerpicked upstroke, etc.
Just wondered which wire wind you feel will get me closer to that above mentioned tone? 42 or 43?
After this will come a “SuperTele”, I think the twangmaster is the obvious choice for that!
Also, this video is 7-8 years old. If you’re aware of any similar new Frailen pups in the last few years, please include in your reply!
Fortunately, I know quite a bit about the subject of guitars! Lol But I value other viewpoints & opinions!
Thanks for your time & insight.
That is great. A humbucker's worth of single coil sound. I'm getting the 43 guage version to drop in a bright HH strat . Should be good.
Ur playin in a killer way Mike, being a fan of u for a long time 🤘🏾
They sound good!
Great demo! sold.
Any idea what windings were used on these? The bridge sounds a bit darker and hotter than other demos I've heard. Love it and great demo as always!
Fantastic playing as always mike, all tho SC style HB Its nice to see the opposite.
always great picking, mike!
thanks for the demo! really appreciate it... Lindy rules
That is an interesting and beautiful sound, man. Have you tried any other Fralin's in the Thinline? Thanks for the demo and great playing! :)
Very nice video, and I must add again Mike, lovely compositions! However I have the same question as many many before me: are these the 42 or 43's?
Another grand slam from Lindy.
great guitar for jazz
Surprisingly Woody tone ... I, for one, swear by my Twangmasters and have 'em in two semi-hollows. The Twangmasters are just a bit more Fender Black Face-ish in comparison. If that make sense. (Great work as always Michael)
+Joseph Lucido My most expensive guitar is a Gibson 335 and it's (by far) my most least played. I'm a strat/tele single coils guy. Thinking about trying some p92's or Twangmasters in the 335 before I just give up and sell the damn thing. I love the way it looks, but I think the semi-hollow sound just doesn't do it for me.
I don't know if these sc pups of fralin will get it there or if it's just the nature of semi-hollow bodies more than humbucking pups that I'm really not digging the sound of.
how many winds on yours' ???
I got 6000 neck and 8000 bridge and am very happy, 7000 was a little too bright in the bridge for me
Do you know if they are the 42 or 43 gauge and what value pots? Lindy recommends different for each gauge. Thanks. Great sound and demo.
Am I the only one to notice the E/A are on a saddle made of something other than brass?
Wish I knew how to mount them in my Tele Blacktop HH which is just collecting dust at the moment :-)
It's not hard to solder new pickups. Give it a try! It'll be fun.
I had the same idea. I love my Blacktop tele, but the stock humbuckers are too warm and smooth. Looking for something that would better match my regular tele.
Its super easy, go for it!
Using a Strymon Blue or Big Sky? Thought I heard their ensemble mode?
Thanks!!
3:22 its bridge not neck :p
Thanks... My mistake
Tell us the distance from string bottom to pickup top...
What kind of strings are you using on this guitar to get that nice warm tone?
So what are the turns and gauge on this guitar? Especially in the bridge. Thanks!
What pedal did you use for the pad sound under the second clip?
How do the number of winds affect the tone? Does the greater number of winds make it warmer? What type of amp were you using for most of this video and how did that play into this good tone you are getting? If I put these in a Fender Blacktop HSH Strat (Alder body I think), would they sound as good as in this guitar? What type of middle pickup might work well with these pickups? Any thoughts?
+John Adams I used an HSH with Fralin Twangmasters and a Bill Lawrence noiseless strat. The Fralins sound sweet, but the Bill Lawrence doesn't balance well. I'd suggest a Fralin noiseless, or else use three of these pickups in an HHH configuration. I think that would sound sweet - especially with a switch to take you from series to parallel.
Are these Fender Wide Range sized, or regular Gibson sized?
David Maas Regular gibson size
Mike Hermans no man gibson do not sounds like that the bridge is quite different, in the bridge the strings tocuhs and vibrate, gibson has a tune o matic bridge and this has a telecaster classic bridge it is another different vibration
can these go in p90 slot
They are also available in a mini-hum format for which you should be able to find p90 mount rings.
